Looking at: Cam Newton

Hey everyone. The Hardcore HOTTIES® probably have read this, but I ran a feature about Cameron Newton, Auburn's five-star quarterback, in today's editions of the Montgomery Advertiser.

It starts like this:
AUBURN -- Cameron Newton spent the first 19 years of his life hearing people rave about his greatness and the dominating player he'd someday become.

The adulation disappeared on Friday, Nov. 22, 2008.

It ends like this:
"... he could be a guy Auburn fans remember forever."

Please have a read.

Great article on Cam Newton, JayGT. The best stories have a theme of redemption. See Shawshank Redemption:

"[Cam] crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of shit smelling foulness [at UF & Blinn CC] I can't even imagine, or maybe I just don't want to. Five hundred yards... that's the length of five football fields, just shy of half a mile."

Yep, pretty good metaphor.

Just spoke with Barton Simmons of Rivals.com ... no relation to Chad Simmons of Scout.com.

Barton Simmons was surprisingly high on Auburn's recruiting effort, said they'll finish ahead of Alabama (behind Florida and possibly Texas) if Coleman, Whitaker, Lattimore and Lemonier sign.

Nice article, Jay G.
Especially the last line! With a solid qb, AU was poised to be fighting for second in the West next year, with another 8-4 or 9-3 type season. We have a good to Great OL, good receivers and backs and more defensive depth...all that was missing was a qb. At the bowl game, overheard AU network guys saying that Newton takes us to that next level and challenging next year for the West. I sure hope so! Regardless, sure makes things a lot more interesting.

the ole Chris Porter reference.

I had class with him during the 1999-2000 school year when he was on the cover of SI--can't remember which quarter it was.

I was actually one of the lucky students to get the season ticket card for that season--first time they had sold out the season since Barkley was playing.

Exciting times he and Doc provided...well, up until the buzzkill that was Porter getting busted for taking that money.

This was a cool story about him that I stumbled across last year:

Jay, I hope your trip to SC is fruitful. However, I know Lattimore is getting a huge amount of pressure to stay home, and so are his parents, pressure to make him stay home.
I don't feel good about landing all on the list. People forget, its hard to get a top notch kid away from the home school. If we keep Coleman, land Whittiker and Lemonoir (sp), I will be more than happy.

4:35 PM
Blogger Turfman said...

Once again I am a web jumped and what i've gathered on the final recruits is this...

Keeping Coleman-85%--he does not take a trip to Miami if he commited to Bama

Lattimore--60%
Whitaker-70%
Lemonier-50%
Byran Jones-40%

Looks like we may lose Howard..

4:37 PM

Turf ... I think the Coleman and Whittaker percentages are much higher in our favor. Lattimore and Lemonier are probably in that neighborhood, and Jones as well.

Howard is gonzo.

4:44 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

Turf, I had heard we would lose Bryan Jones. Don't expect him to sign. AU should push DJ to hold off signing until after Lattimore. If lattimore goes to SC, he would feel better about his chances at AU. Just sayin.

Coleman, no one really knows at this point if he is on the way to Miami or not. If he shows up there, it's good for AU.

Thats a good thing. Usually, Saban commits don't take other visits. But...he's a pretty sly devil himself. Again, if we keep Coleman, get Whittiker and one other, I will be satisfied. I still wonder who the backups will be. Possibly Ambles, Swilling, Beasly? Inquiring minds want to know.

5:08 PM
Blogger Spongeworthy said...

AU, most think he is gone, that AU may have or will pull his offer, and that he wants to go somewhere he is sure to play RB. He went to Clemson w/o telling our coaches. They didn't likey.

Coleman left turdistan last night and at of 3pm est he was in Miami. If Howard takes a visit to Ku then his offer is gone.

6:27 PM

G, your comments about Porter are so true. I knew him through a friend that went to high school with him. He alwasy thought he was the shiznit. I saw him at several parties in AU and he was a jerk. I will say that he follow up dunk he had against LSU will for ever be one of the greastest plays I have ever seen in person and one of the best I've ever seen.

6:29 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Coleman's visit to Miami lends credence to the "He's just taking his visits while he can" theory.

I have a feeling that he wouldn't be there if he was headed to Bama. Could be wrong, of course.

6:38 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

This is on a Miami site:

"It seems like Coleman is just trying to get the most out of the recruiting process and contrary to some reports, will be signing with Auburn on Feb. 3rd. I wish I could believe everything I read on the Bleacher Report. It sounds great if true. It would be nice to think they really have inside information, but my thought is they are probably guessing just like everyone else.

My theory regarding Jury service ......nuke 'em till they glow and shoot 'em in the dark.

I haven't been selected to serve yet.

i just finished watching "the man who invented lying".

i thought it was going to be the story of how some ahole from west virginia uses and abuses everyone in his way to get what he wants and revels in the fact that he is a destroyer of lives and dreams and receives national acclaim for his deception.

that actually was what the movie was about, only it was not about $aban. maybe some bammer grad can use their revisionist history degree and superimpose nicky's face over ricky gervais'.

my only jury service to date was on a civil trial.

the case was where some bounty hunters busted into a house to apprehend a girl who had skipped numerous court dates and was trying to elude them.

it was strange because the girl was a total dirtbag to her mom and many kids, yet the bounty hunters clearly overstepped what they can legally do.

the jury wanted to throw all parties involved into a sack and take turns whacking it with a 2X4.

I feel a little embarrassed at my schadenfreude,

not much going on tonight as my 14 month old son is sleeping and the wife is out with her friends,

so...I went to cockytalk and read the last 10 pages of the Eric Mack thread, it reads like a greek tragedy.

It's has a perfect parabolic structure to it.

I served as foreman of a grand jury. It's amazing how stupid criminals can be, like pulling credit receipts out of the safe and copying the numbers while being recorded on a security camera. Most of the indictments were very easy.

We also indicted a priest for child pornography, although we didn't know he was a priest until we read it in the paper later.

I spent over a year serving on a Federal Grand Jury.

That was interesting.

Drugs are bad...umkay.

I've only been called for jury duty once. Wasted a vacation day. I can assure you that I will never be seated on a jury.

Good morning Hotties!

Wednesday they predicted we'd get 10-11".
I doubted.
Thursday and yesterday they predicted we'd get 5-8".
I doubted.

About 3"...4 tops. Now we have very, very light sleet/rain.

Good week for AU coming up. Important week for AU coming. If all goes as planned, AU is taking the 1st of several steps to put the football program where many of us want it to be. I like what I am hearing.

wtc - thanks for the info. I know you don't follow recruiting, but it's apparent you are a highly trained sofa specialist.

We're only getting the edge of this one. Only 2-4 inches expected here. Nothing like the Blizzard of 09.
