ON THE SCENE: Recruiting

Hey everyone. We're here in Auburn talking with the recruits on their way out of town. I'll just update as the day progresses.

OVERVIEW:
  • Auburn was hoping the two uncommitted defensive tackles -- Jeffrey Whitaker and Byran Jones -- would commit this weekend. They didn't. Still, Auburn clearly has piqued their interest.

  • OL Shon Coleman, whose commitment reportedly was wavering, said today that he will sign with Auburn. He also referred to the Tigers as his "future team."

  • WR Trovon Reed was the only prospect to avoid post-visit interviews. Not sure why he would choose to do that, though I'm not insinuating he's a bad kid for doing so. Just noting a curious decision.

  • It's clear that Auburn's commitments were here this weekend in an effort to get the uncommitted guys on board. We'll soon see if their efforts were effective.

THE PROSPECTS:

UPDATE @ 1:10 p.m. JUSTIN DELANIE, defensive end from Linden, had a good time this weekend. He is an Auburn commitment. Delanie laughed when asked if he'd consider signing anywhere else. He played at 235 this past season, but he has dropped 10 pounds to play basketball. Delanie said he's planning to play at 250 or 260, so he obviously has some trips to Golden Corral ahead.

UPDATE @ 1:01 p.m. JEREMY RICHARDSON, wideout from Springville, had a good time this weekend. His player host was Onterio McCalebb. Richardson is an Auburn commitment. He didn't have much to say. He's a quiet guy. He did mention that he's hoping the two defensive tackles commit.

UPDATE @ 1 p.m. JEFFREY WHITAKER, defensive tackle from Georgia, had a good time this weekend. His player host was Nosa Eguae. He rated this trip a "10," but it's clear Auburn still has work ahead. He's primarily considering Auburn, Georgia and Miami. Whitaker said he has an idea of where he'll sign, but he's "just making sure" that his preliminary decision is the right one. Impressive kid, very mature, composed and interesting.

UPDATE @ 12:35 p.m. JAKE HOLLAND, linebacker from Birmingham, had a good time this weekend. He is an Auburn commitment. His player host was Jessel Curry. Holland said he spent the weekend recruiting on Auburn's behalf. He also likes the new student housing at The Village.

UPDATE @ 11:14 a.m. SHON COLEMAN, offensive tackle from Olive Branch, Miss., had a good time this weekend. He's been listed as a soft commitment by the recruiting services, so Auburn used this weekend to re-affirm Coleman's feelings. The scheme apparently worked; Coleman said ``I'm going to sign with Auburn." He referred to Auburn as "my future team," but said he still may take more visits. Interested schools include Ole Miss, Tennessee, Southern Cal and Miami. Coleman is a big man, a strong-looking man. He looks like a football player.

UPDATE @ 10:48 a.m. BYRAN JONES, defensive tackle from Arkansas, had a good time this weekend. His player host was Eltoro Freeman. Jones has it narrowed down to Auburn and Arkansas. He will make an official visit in Fayetteville next weekend. Jones said he won't announce his decision until signing day. He said he's good friends with both Michael Dyer and Dakota Mosley, a pair of fellow Arkansas prospects who have committed to Auburn. Jones said he's fine with playing out of state. Not sure what to think about his upcoming decision.

UPDATE @ 10:33 a.m. D.J. HOWARD, athlete from Lincoln (near Anniston), had a good time this weekend. He is an Auburn commitment. Howard considered a trip to Clemson, but apparently that's off. He considers himself a running back and his dalliance with Clemson was rooted in the fact that Clemson wants him as a tailback. Auburn coaches told Howard this week that he will play tailback at Auburn, so he has re-affirmed his commitment.

UPDATE @ 10:22 a.m. JAWARA WHITE, linebacker from Troy, had a good time this weekend. He said he dedicated his time toward recruiting the two uncommitted defensive tackles -- Jeffrey Whitaker and Byran Jones. White said he was 100% sure Jones had a good time. Why? ``Because he was with me." White said he wouldn't discuss how successful his recruiting pitches were. ``That's a surprise."

UPDATE @ 10:10 a.m. TRENT FISHER, athlete from suburban Nashville, had a good time this weekend. He was hosted by Phillip Lutzenkirchen. Fisher said he is a safety by trade and expects to play that in college. He has some I-AA offers, but would play at Auburn as a walk-on. His sister currently attends Auburn. Fisher's father, Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher, made the trip and was in the complex today.

UPDATE @ 10:05 a.m. JONATHAN MINCY, defensive back from suburban Atlanta, had a good time this weekend. He is an Auburn commitment. He referred to Auburn as "we" when asked about the 2009 season. I'd say he's locked in. Mincy said he will not take any additional visits.

UPDATE @ 9:50 a.m. KENNETH CARTER, defensive tackle from Greenville, said he enjoyed the trip. He is an Auburn commitment. He is the team's only DT commitment at this point. Carter said he's ready to get on campus and start playing. He ended his comments with a "War Eagle."

UPDATE @ 9:22 a.m. RYAN WHITE, defensive back from Tallahassee, Fla., was the first guy out. He is an Auburn committment. He said he did a lot of partying during his trip. He spent time at Zac Etheridge's pad last night, had a good time. Said he probably won't make visits to any additional schools. Seems fully committed to me.

Not that I've ever even discussed Favre on here, but...

I've never doubted Favre's ability to still be a good QB. I just thought he was a d-bag and a tool for the way he treated the Packers at the end.

They didn't want him to come back b/c they asked him when he retired if he was 100% going to stay retired and he said yes.

Given that, they had moved on with their plans to make this team Rodgers' and then Favre wants to come back.

WTH?!

Blogger E-Bro said...

I'm not sure the Packers are any better if they have Favre.

Now if you also include Minnesots's o-line, Peterson, and Harvin in Green Bay with the Brett, maybe they are better.

Then again, if you switch out Rodgers for Favre in Minnesota, probably not a lot of difference there either.

3:29 PM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

Umm, I wouldn't exactly say the Packers are at the bottom of the pile. I do believe they made it to the Wildcard game and took it to OT.

Then DANSBY! made a fantastic play to win the game for the Cardinals.

To add to the confusion:

Calhoun County OL Eric Mack, who said after his official visit to USC Sunday he was firm with the Gamecocks and would not take any more visits, does plan to take an unofficial visit to Auburn next weekend with teammate ATH Shamier Jeffery who is going there for a junior day. Mack, who has been hotly pursued by the Tigers, made an official visit there in September. Mack has scratched his plans for an official visit to Florida.

The dude from SC who wrote the Mack article earlier is looking more and more like a complete hack. He didn't have any quotes, so he made stuff up... now the website is having to backtrack.

Mack told him he was cancelling his OFFICIAL visit to Florida and wouldn't take any more OFFICIAL visits. Only problem with assuming that meant he was locked into SC... he'd already had his official to AU and planned to return on an UNOFFICIAL.
They are also backtracking on their claim that Latt committed... which he did NOT.

What a bunch of goobs.

Feeling a little more confident about Lattimore and Mack at the moment. I think I'll stop reading. DMiller, wtc, and wtc's mom have already told us they were coming to Auburn!

3:50 PM

Sources tell us that the boosters maintained a downtown apartment in Knoxville that was commonly referred to as Kiffin’s “rendezvous place.”

WOW if that is true...

3:52 PM
Blogger Miller said...

jhag.... the Fisher kid is a smart player... he had 120 tackles last year and is a DB.... He has 1AA offers, but wants to play at AU... his sister (Coach Fisher's daughter) is a junior at AU right now...

The reason he doesn't have many other offers is that he's been clocked at a 4.8/40....
I don't think adding him as a walk-on has anything to do with the fact that he is Jeff Fisher's son.... that part is just icing on the cake.

It is a hoot. He accuses the US of sending in 3,000 marines. We are actually sending in 5,000 marines to help restore order on the streets. Seeing as Haiti has a population of around 9 Million, I don't think they will feel that threatened by us sending in fewer people than that show up for an Auburn basketball game to help restore order.

Us attempting to take over Haiti would be like a Cadillac owner trying to steal a scooter.

I was bored with the football game, so I started flipping to see if there was any basketball on. I love the Lady Vols, so I turned to it. They were up by about 20 over Vandy with like 12 minutes left in the 1st half. Vandy came back to as little as 5. At the half, the Vols lead is 9.

in the spirit of its never too early to look at next year, i looked up the 2010 schedule and see a good chance for AU to make a real run if certain things can fall into place. newton will have to live up to the hype and a few of the freshmen will have to be the impact players they have been built up to be.

arky st. w
@msu thurday night w
clemson
usce
ulamo w
@uk
arky
lsu
@ole miss
ut-chat w
uga
@bammer

putting the msu game down as a w is admittedly a stretch, but those four are the only ones AU should be heavily favored in. i can't help but feel pretty good about clemson with their offensive losses and usce offense will have to be a surprise to win at AU. lsu and uga will be question marks due to personnel losses and their perceived downward trend the last few years. ole miss and arky are at the mercy of their qbs coming back (which i can't remember what they did).

i can see 10 wins as actually attainable for 2010. AU should be able to make some of the plays that cost it 2-3 games in 2009 with improved depth and more players suited to the gus system. i fully expect a 9-10 win season including a bowl win. the table should be set nicely for 2011. i could also see 7-6 or 8-5 with some key injuries non-qualifiers etc.

DANG!!!!!!!!!

I was told the ING Half was the weekend before March 21st, but it's on that weekend. I jsut went to register, and found that out. That happens to be my Anniversary weekend and we are out of town without kids. Norn, any more 1/2's that I can run in the near future. I'm new to race running.

JayG-I mentioned it earleir, but your work today was outstanding. We all apprecisate your efforts to bring us the facts. Sometimes we want you to give us what you hear, but we know when you post it you have checked it so you do not have egg on your face like that clown from soCarolina has now.
Thanks again.

I second what WTC just said. Outstanding coverage as usual and much appreciated. This is not a pay site, so your dedication to the Hotties is absolutely outstanding and well beyond the call of duty.

Wake- That ain't happening. This is the first trip without the kids, so she has been looking forward to this trip for quite awhile. It's been planned for over 4 months.

Eddie - if this pulls up properly for you, it should show quite a few 1/2's in '10 in the ATL vicinity.

Yeah, Eddie, I would 86 Wake's advice. I remember the first time we got away without children. I am a very forgiving woman, but I would break something on you if you ran a race instead.

Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I've lost interest in Nascar in recent years, I'm sure I'll watch the 500, but I'm not near as excited about it as I used to be.

Jimmy has killed it in my opinion, there could not be a more boring guy to be setting records.

WTC - come over this way and run the ING in March.

Norm-I was just looking at the entry form and the course. I think I am taking a cruise the week before.

9:19 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Well that's it then. Eddie's afraid of his wife so he won't run in it. WTC's gonna be all fat post-cruise. So, once again I'll be the sole representative of the HABOTN in this event.

9:22 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Norm,
If I ran, I would represent HABOTN with you. But, I don't like to sweat. And everyone I see running looks like they are in so much pain. I'll be an athletic supporter and cheer from here :)

9:24 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I'll run it with you. Wait by 1/2 do you mean 1/2 mile or 1/2 marathon.... because a 1/2 marathon is a long way.

I'll hang around and be a jock strap like Cincy.

9:25 PM
Blogger cincytiger said...

Hey, I can run 1/2 a mile if that's what we we're talking. Otherwise I'm hanging with Wake.

9:29 PM

Unfortunately, we're talking 1/2 Marathon so I guess I'll have to make do on my own. Well, me and the other many thousands of folks running that day.

I believe DJ Howard could be a surprise of this class. BTW Lattimore said late today that Auburn has a slight lead over SC. His mother considers Atlanta home, so I think if we can get him in for an unofficial we get him.

Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

chip chip, I agree with your assessment for next season, although I think Auburn can 9 or 10 games in the regular season plus a bowl win (depending on the matchup). With more depth on defense, they shouldn't tire out and should be able to keep the other team from scoring as many points as last year.

Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

There should be a "win" in there...

I preview it and still miss a typo!

6:39 AM

Norm & WTC- Thanks for the info. I'm looking into all the future races. I will find a 1/2 and run it. If you see anything in April, keep me in the loop. That works with me and my training on this stuff. Hopefully after April, I'll be good to go on several 1/2's. Running is fun. I'm still bummed about being out of town for the 1/2. My former boss is running it and he will not let me live it down that I will not be running.

If a person wanted to get started running.... and by started... I mean from scratch. I'm out of shape, my joints hurt, and I have to have motivation...
But, if one were to want to get started, what are some realistic goals to set and a realistic timetable to achieve them? What are some tips for beginning runners?

My wife and I are thinking about starting to run some, to get back in better shape... we thought that maybe setting a goal of a 5K this spring would be a start... maybe a 1/2 by the fall? Thoughts from the running Hotties?

8:47 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

DM, i've never ran further than a 10K so i don't know about long distance training. i know there are programs you can easily google.

i would start by trying to go 20-30 minutes each time out. jog until you can't go then slow to walking. recover and jog again. then increase time/jogging from there. i've seen several people at the gym go from doing no cardio to doing 5 & 10K's all the time. they love it.

8:49 AM
Blogger Jet said...

DMiller ...

Go to halhigdon.com. He has a variety of training regimens available free online.

Maybe one day I'll follow one of them.

8:52 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

i would love to do a marathon but i can't bring myself to devote that much time to running. i'm usually over it in about 30 minutes.

8:54 AM
Blogger LuvAU1968 said...

If D. Miller's joints already hurt, running isn't going to help. Running is very hard not only only your knees, but your ankles and feet too. I recommend low impact cardio - elliptical, arc trainer or swimming.

But, what do I know...I'm in the same boat as ehyou and Jet.

8:56 AM
Blogger astatguy said...

Technology has gotten a little out-of-hand when a music player hiding in your shoe evaluates your performance. I have a wife for that, so my shoe can just mind its own business.

9:00 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

nice astat. nice.

i don't like elliptical machines at all. i've used several different kinds and they just kill my lower back. i'm in decent shape too. i dunno what the deal is.

9:08 AM
Blogger Norm said...

Miller - 1) Jet's right, halhigdon.com has some good plans online. I worked through his "Novice 1" program before my first 1/2 marathon. 2) definitely start with a plan and goal in mind, I didn't and now feel like I wasted that time. 3) I personally and highly recommend "Move Free" which is a supplement you can get at just about anywhere (I get mine at either Kroger or Costco). My knees used to absolutely kill me but after I started taking it they don't bother me at all anymore. I've suggested it to some other runners who report similar results. 4) You know how to find me if you want other info.

9:10 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

on second thought DM, i think you just need plenty of rest. go ahead and sign up for your 5K or 10K. don't train at all. you need to rest up. when you get to the starting line just sprint as hard as you can to take a huge lead. then just coast the last 4.5K or so. :)

9:13 AM
Blogger Norm said...

Miller - perhaps most importantly, invest in a good pair of running shoes. Find a specialty running store to consult with you, don't rely on the high school kid working part time at Sports Authority. You may spend more than you might have thought but I absolutely, positively, 100% guarantee you that it's $ well spent.

9:20 AM
Blogger Miller said...

Norm.... have you seen, and if so what are your thoughts on, fivefingers running shoes?

9:32 AM
Blogger wtc said...

Dmiller-I agree wit Norm, which isn't often, about the running shoes from a high end store. I buy a new pair after about 350 miles or so. Also, I purchased a sole insert. I remove the insert that comes with the shoe and put the others in. They have worked great for me.

The halhigdon site is very good. I have used it for training purposes for the 1/2 and full marathons I have run.
