Looking at Ala @ AU women
Hey everyone. It's time for the IRON BOWL of women's hoops.

dang
hope the women whoop that ---
1st loser, that's me
Sullivan?
now?
jay you got alabama and alabama in your team records on the cover page
Beat Bama!!
THT, I'd LOVE for us to sneak eric russell in as a db/kr
TWO and FORTY-FOUR!? Holy cow. Why are they still playing women's bball over there? Please don't let us make it 3 tonight.
GO TIGERS!!!
THT ...I've refrained from issuing that Bama post on the other thread specifically b/c I didn't like the view without bias. I'll gladly re-apply those glasses
BEAT BAMA!
Alabama last three full SEC seasons:
0-14
1-13
1-13
0-3 this season so far.
Wow and I thought our men were bad.
BEAT BAMA!!!!!!!!
per knoxville radio email blast:
Air Force football coach Troy Calhoun has scheduled a meeting with his players at 5:50 p.m., according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.
There is no indication regarding whether or not the meeting is related to the coaching vacancy at UT, but Calhoun is widely considered one of the top candidates for the position.
UT athletic director Mike Hamilton has not responded to any requests for comments.
Go Lady Tigers! Let's keep a positive streak alive! Uh, men's team, you can go ahead and upset UT tonight, too.
Thanks, Hoopie! The view should be much better now. Maybe not accurate, but at least better.
BINoba - I can't believe there isn't an offer from at least one school for Russell. I mean, not even SJSU, Fresno, etc? What's the deal? Grades?
Beat Bama!
It's a done deal per scottie. I'll let all the media outlets know.
i guess i'm a 'named' source, eh ehyou? well dadgummit.
I read somewhere that UT is hiring Calhoun.
I don't think hiring Calhoun brings much sizzle to the Tenn program, esp though a recruits eyes. I know they want to move quick, but the wrong quick is worse than a little slower.
ESPN reports that Air Force coach Tony Calhoun has accepted position at UT-Knoxville. ESPN cites AU alum on the scene in Knoxville as their source.
Thanks, SteveRK.
Troy, not Tony
Chris Low on ESPN.com confirms the meeting with Calhoun and his team, but does not speculate the content.
Somehow I think I would rather see this women's game, rather than the men's tonight.
War Eagle, bb ladies and men!
Beat Bama, Beat Tenn, whoever!
Go, Air Force!
he'll get some offers, they'll all probably come late, though.
I hear ya steve
Bringing the Paul Johnson style offense to the SEC will be very interesting. Considering the running talent UT has, they should be good to go.
This hire will affect their recruiting class more than most. Receivers and QBs will definitely have to reconsider their options.
Don't be so sure he brings the triple option with him, Calhoun was the OC for the Houston Texans before taking the job at Air Force.
Anyone wanting to help out with the rescue effort in Haiti should check this out.
Seanzie, that is a good point.
If I had to guess his style, it would be pro-style zone blocking running game and play action as the main downfield weapon. He comes from the Shanahan, Heimerdinger, Kubiak school of thought.
He said, "Heimerdinger." heh heh heh heh
Jet, you should hear some of the names he gets called on Nashville radio.
EVERYBODY LOVES THE A.D.
Tennessee coach Mike Hamilton stumbles into his house last night, hungry and bewildered at his task.
His wife, Mrs. Hamilton, smiles pertly.
"Sorry, Snookums, I didn't cook dinner. Didn't know when you were going to be home," he says.
Mike shakes his head dejectedly.
"I know. This coach thing is wearing me out. I haven't eaten. I'm starving, and all everybody wants is to know who's gonna be the coach.
"So, what should we do?"
Mrs. Hamilton quickly replies, "How 'bout Calhoun's?"
Hamilton dashes to the phone, calling Air Force coach Troy Calhoun and offering him the job. Calhoun, stunned, gratefully accepts.
Mrs. Hamilton looks aghast.
"Why on earth did you do that?" she said.
"You said you wanted Calhoun," Mike says.
Says the Mrs., "I wanted ribs, you dumb@$$."
Can you jump the shark on your first episode? ;)
Count Chocula, if he hires Calhoun, he could be cancelled after one episode.
halfway there
Just checking in to say "BEAT BAMA!" I know the ladies will give it their best and I expect Ali to give us a bunch of 3s.
Leaving the country for a week so I will be off-line so you will have to continue without me! War Eagle!
Found this Dansby quote posted on another site. Don't know where it came from, but I know people get upset when he says he is from Woodlawn High School.
"While leading the Cardinals' defense, Dansby also kept track of Auburn's run to the Outback Bowl under first year head coach Gene Chizik, who finished 8-5.
"Auburn is just like a second home to me, man. To have Gene Chizik at the helm is even better, because he was my defensive coordinator," Dansby said.
"I'm just anxious to see next season, because they had so much success this sesaon. I'm anxious to see how well they do. They opened the offense up. That's different for the SEC. It's a new feel, and I hope it grows into something special at Auburn."
I heart Karlos Dansby.
Kathy, I also posted something about Dansby on another thread. He shouts out Woodlawn because he says everyone already knows he went to Auburn. It just wants to give his high shcool some pub.
Jake Holland to get a 4th star today
Carlos Dansby was one of the few bright spots in what was an otherwise wasted season in 2003.
This is sooooooooo totally off topic but is probably one American Idol audition I will remember.
For those of you who hate idol just ignore.
In last night's final audition from Atlanta, a guy comes out who is obviously waaaaay over 28 years old and gives a 5-star performance. It was a song he wrote.
This is it:
(or my interpretation thereof, since I could have missed a word or two)
PANTS ON THE GROUND!
Pants on the ground,
Pants on the ground,
with the gold in yo mouth,
hat turned sideways,
pants on the ground
Call yourself a cool cat,
Looking like a fool.
Walking downtown with you pants on the ground.
Get 'em up!
Hey,
Get yo pants off the ground, looking like a fool,
walking,
talking,
with you pants on the ground.
Get em up!
Repeat several times....it was a classic.
This 62 man is passionate and I understand why.
That 2003 defense in general was pretty solid. With a less anemic offense, they would have a decent shot of beating USC, Tech and Georgia that year. Ole Miss was just a tough loss for the whole team all around.
LSU's the only game where I felt like we just got spanked all across the board.
E-Bro,
Let's not talk about 2003. It just makes me mad.
2003 the D was fine, I agree with E-Bro, with a little help from the offense it would have been a lot better.
USC was pretty much handed a 7-0 lead very early.
The D played fine vs GaTech.
One busted play against Ole Miss to the full back killed us.
However, the LSU game was a disaster and I view the UGA one the same way.
With Jonathan Crompton I think triple option is their best option.
That 2003 LSU team was pretty tough...
The put a physical beatdown on Alabama that year in Bryant Denny...
Worst one I've ever witnessed in person.
As far as bright spots in 2003, Carnell Williams had 1,300 yards and 17 TD's, so that was definately good.
Dansby, Brown and Thomas were as solid as you can be at LB.
Wasn't Crompton a senior?
UT boards seem to think it is the Air Force guy.
RK- And he did that without scoring the first 2 games.
Crompton is going to get a seventh year of eligibility to further work on his porn star mustache.
Yeah CH=B. I've heard Karlos explain the reason he mentions his high school. He said he wanted to inspire those kids in that high school that you can obtain high goals. I have always been a Dansby fan.
Signing Day 2/3. A-Day game 4/17. When does Spring practice officially start?
Jet...look away.
I don't think the UGA game was a disaster for the defense. If I remember correctly, the offense, as was typical that year, put the defense in some tough spots early on. After that, defense played pretty well and with a half-decent offense, we could've got back into the game.
And if it is not the Air Force guy...where the heck do they go?
Would have to be Cutcliff then..right?
yeah Im hearing UT and the Calhoun dude from AF is close to official...this cant be a good hire...nobody even knows his name. If im a UT fan i want the AD fired
E-Bro- If only we had Jason Campbell, Ronnie Brown, Caddy, Courtney Taylor, Devin & Ben O. Then maybe we would have been decent on offense in 2003.....
Borges had great timing...
What a stockpile of offensive talent.
FSJ- I didn't even list the linemen that went pro.
Eddie...one name: Al Borges.
Makes you think. Whenever Gus moves on to greener pastures, maybe Chiz should get the old band back together and hire Borges as his OC.
Borges and Chizik? It was a dynamic duo in 2004.
Didn't somebody say Air Force guy was meeting with his players later today? Kinda makes you think, it may be .........
I'll never not be amazed/saddened by how much talent can be used so badly.
E-Bro- One Name....Nallsminger. Epic Fail on Tubs part.
WMSP's The Roundtable should be renamed:
The Everything Relates Back to How Awesome Nick Saban Is Roundtable
RK...are you talking about Les Miles and LSU?
:)
I saw something yesterday where UT averaged 29 points a game this year...yet went 7-6. I didn't think of them as an offensive powerhouse this year. Just goes to show you how much football has changed in the last 15 years. Back then if you averaged 29 points a game with a decent defense... you probably won 10 games or so.
IF UT has hired Coach Calhoun, I bet we don't hear the Coach Calhoun wasn't committed to Air Force in leaving his players less than 3 weeks to signing day. But with that said, anybody that plays football at Air Force better be committed to the school and nation first, not the coach.
Well Eddie, two days ago for the majority of the UT fan base, Kiffin was the answer.
FSJ...it's worth noting that games against Western Kentucky and Memphis inflated those stats a bit. I think Crompton might have had something like ten touchdown passes against both those teams.
Same goes for us against Ball St. and Furman, though I think we were legitimately a good offense outside of LSU and Kentucky.
Calhoun has also been at the program for 3 years and has done a good job for them.
Yeah, Crompton and Todd had on paper really really good seasons going by the final stats.
However they put up 70% of their numbers in 25% of their games.
One and done just seems shadier to me than 3 years. This is also another example of why CFB needs an early signing period. The timetable for the off-season and NSD is just too truncated.
Seanzie- I think the early signing day period is coming. It's just a matter of time.
So...Calhoun is staying at Air Force...Time for the Cut Above to come home...YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS UP!
Calhoun is STAYING?
Seanzie- Yepp, just release a statement saying so.
If it is Cutcliffe, BAMMER, then that'll be interesting.
I wonder if Fulmer has already moved into Mike Hamilton's office?
BEASLEY!!
Cut is a bammer technically...
He's really a Vol.
FSJ...how much does it hurt to say that?
A Bammer is truly a Vol.
The horror.
I say Fulmer should come on as AD and be the Interim HC for this season and then hire the next coach after next season completes.
Doesn't hurt me much at all....I really don't ponder Cutcliffe...
I certainly hope UT hires him. There are no more Manning children in the pipeline so he will be mediocre at best.
Eddie...that's a thought.
But that would be kind of a slippery slope if he ends up having a decent year, which doesn't seem likely given some of the holes they have to replace.
There is a huge difference between what Calhoun wold be doing and what Kiffikin did. It isn't just the one and done thing. It is that Calhoun is going to a significantly higher profile coaching position. Yes, USC is considered higher profile, but it isn't close to the difference between Air Force and Tennessee. Additionally, it isn't nearly as out of the blue. It is being discussed. I had absolutely no clue Kiffikin was going to leave.
Yeah, but if he was really successful, what would the fans want?
I'm just imagining Mike Hamilton listening to Ryan Adams' "When the Stars Go Blue" on repeat the last 45 hours or so.
Wow, so who will be next in line for UT?
RK...I'll take the job.
Eddie, Fulmer as an interim would make a lot of sense for both. I think Fulmer would love it and wouldn't feel slighted if it was clear he was just the interim coach. If UT did great, keep him. That isn't a crazy scenario, but I doubt the AD would like it.
If it isn't the Air Force guy..
I would say Cutcliffe...
After that....I hope they get Trooper. Just kidding.
I think UT fans might have learned their lesson from the 2006-2007 seasons.
Fulmer followed up his 5-6 in 2005 with a couple of decent seasons, only to fall back again in 2008.
Sustained success hasn't really been Phil's thing as of late.
For enough money I'll put on that putrid shade of orange and repeat the General's maxims....
Steve- In my scenario, Fulmer is the New AD. Come to rescue the faithful. Mike Hamilton is all but fired right now.
I can't see them getting Tropper as a head coach. It will be a stretch for them to hire him as the OC.
Apparently Calhoun's statement is on the Air Force athletic website.
Yea, I actually like that idea in some ways, Eddie. But do you want your AD to be someone which had so much problems in terms of discipline and his players? That is what I think really killed Fulmer.
I'd take Derek Dooley before Cut.
Steve- We are talking about a fan base that is jilted. Fulmer cried for them when he left, Kiffin had to have a police escort to leave without being beaten to death. I think they are more understanding now than ever.
RK...
I agree 100%.
Derek Dooley or Petersen from Boise State would be a good hire. Petersen could be one of the best of all offseason moves.
"Fulmer as an interim would make a lot of sense for both."
I think he'd be a bad choice as coach and as AD.
He's not a businessman so that makes the AD part difficult in today's landscape.
As a coach, he'd be working for an AD who didn't want him 14 months ago.
Maybe they'll hire Clawson from Bowling Green.
It doesn't look like it is Calhoun.
Good call.
Eddie, in terms of the fans, I think they would be much more willing than the university.
Wouldn't getting Cutcliffe kind of be viewed like getting Fulmer back, anyway?
There ain't enough cash to make me wear houndstooth, move to West Vance and lose my soul.
Cutcliffe to release a statement soon.
http://www.rockytoptalk.com/2010/1/14/1251573/source-david-cutcliffe-to-release
Thanks, Eddie!!!
Hiring Cutcliffe would be equal to giving up. Surely they're not that desperate.
I wouldn't wear an Auburn shirt for anything..
Well that's not true...There is a rumor of a picture of me in a HABOTN shirt.
"If we can't get a coordinator or Air Force's coach then what hope do we have luring a guy away from a program like Duke?"
That has to be about the saddest comment I have ever read from supposedly a UT fan.
In related news...supposedly Tommy Bowden is walking naked on I-40 to Knoxville...
FSJ,
Oh, thank God. You said "Tommy."
I wouldn't consider hiring Cutcliffe to be giving up. I do believe he is a good coach and got a raw deal at Ole Miss. He just doesn't have the wow that would excite the UT fans and Tennessee hiring a coach who was fired by Ole Miss is one of the signs that the end of the world is near.
Whew, at least it's not Terry gettin' nekkid.
Jet, apparently we were both cringing at the same time.
BREAKING NEWS...
New Tennessee coach....
Newest Vol
From what I have read, Terry Bowden is getting closer to be in perfect shape. A sphere is a perfect shape, correct?
Bobby Bowden doesn't have much to do these days why not set up shop in Knoxville? He has indicated he thinks he could still coach.
FSJ, you are a tease.
The problem with Cutcliffe -- among others -- is that he looks like your 5th choice.
You had recruits excited about being there playing for Lane Violation, Daddy and the One Who Does Not Speak English.
Cutcliffe is gonna spend a few minutes talking about Peyton and Eli and explain how he got fired at Ole Miss and ended up at Duke.
Logan Young is laughing somewhere. If you can laugh there.
How about an Ex-Bama coach? That would make things interesting.
Sure...I vote they hire Mike Dubose...
It would be a tremendous challenge and a tremendous opportunity.
FSJ...Tennessee should be so lucky.
Hayden Fox is a loyal guy, though. He coached at Chattanooga. He wouldn't spit in the face of us Noogans to coach for those hillbillies in Knoxville.
I hear Mike DuBose is available.
All I can think off now is those flashing lights on Interstate 75 between Cleveland and Knoxville warning against fog where they seem to have those 52 car pileups.
That's what this coaching search looks like.
Dang it, y'all beat me to it.
Fran's available.
Hold the rope.
If that don't work...hire Mike Shula..
Ummm...umm.....ummmmm...ummm
Or Mike Price...
It's rollin baby...
Or Dennis Franchione..
He can call Vandy the school down the road and talk about holding the rope.
Mike Price is always an option...he already has the Hoes part, the Vol Navy may provide the Boats.
Careful.
Vandy's tough. Maybe Chattanooga oughta be "The School Down the Road."
The problem is that Price wouldn't use the Vol "hostesses" to recruit talent....He would date them.
I hear Bruce Pearl is already a Boats N Hoes guy...they'd get along great.
Mike Price ... "Orange Pride" meetings in the Head Coach's Office at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Weeknights.
The Head Coach...Pimp Daddy Mike Price...
Sean...
Bruce was pulling some talent if the pictures I've seen are correct.
Yessir, I'm inclined to agree.
Any possibility of hearing those amazing words "Bill Curry is back"!!!
I'll be honest...at this point RK is correct. I'd hire Dooley.
Entertainment at the expense of others misfortunes is about as fun as it gets.
I'm glad it is someone else for a change..
Lord knows we've had our share...and then some.
In retrospect I'd like to commend Jay Jacobs on his coaching search. It was nothing like this debacle.
Granted, Auburn wasn't taken by surprise or anything like UT was...but still.
My fav quote so far from VolChat:
On the plane coming back from Colorado Tuesday. Gruden supposedly turned him down, just like Muschamp, Calhoun, the checkout lady at Kroger's, the Comcast technician who came over Monday to fix my cable, the nice waiter at Jocks And Jills who served CelticVol and I lunch today, David Hasselhoff, etc., etc.
Yeah, when Mike Hamilton talks, people listen.
One word.....
MANGINO.
I can't help but laugh whenever anyone says mangino.
it's like when foreman and hyde get kelso to hurt himself. "my eye!!!"
Obviously with hindsight, Kiffikin was a stupid hire. But was firing Fulmer another stupid mistake?
No Steve..
Fulmer was stale...moreso than Tuberville, IMO.
leach and staff are available and ready to go. they could recruit to their system well i think. will it work? name a better option out there for them at this point. i don't think it would be a total disaster and might even be fun.
Sounds like Hamilton is going to have to pull a Mal Moore and take a risk and just throw the Monopoly guy at someone.
has he been officially ruled out by ut?
Fulmer had more problems, but look at what this is doing to the reputation of UT. The same thing happened with Bama and it is why they had to sell their soul to Saban. At times in the past both the UT and Bama head coaching positions were viewed as some of the best positions in college football. Now UT is getting turned down by the head coach of Air Force?
Who is "he" chip?
Eddie
Looking back I saw your 1:33 comment you forgot Brandon Jacobs that never got to play
leach.
I'm thinking they will pull someone no one saw coming. Aka Chizik
If I remember correctly, Jacobs had a 200 yard game against MSU. We just didn't have a an open position for him to get a lot of carries.
That should have been ALA Chizik.
I meant kinda like we did Chizik, no they will get Chizik... that would be teh suck.
i'm sure leach's baggage is scary right now, but he's the most successful coach available on the market and tubs just let most of his former staff at ttu go. get the boys together in pumpkin outfits and head to kvill. ruffin mcneil would make fulmer look like a small gourd in all orange.
Leach would be a wow hire, but he would also be a risky hire. With all the bad publicity and the allegations against Leach, UT might not to want to stick their head back in the lion's mouth.
Seanzie ...
That's exactly what they have to do. That's what they should have done with Muschamp. Now, they'll overpay for either Mohammed, Jugdish, Sidney, Clayton or Lonny.
Larry.
Poor UT. A school hasn't been rejected by so many coaching candidates since ... UAT.
Fortunately Mal connected in a big way on a Hail Mary.
Mal Moore is the Doug Flutie of ADs.
yeah. i think the perception leach is risky has to have lessened as the search drags on. if it doesn't work, regroup in 3-4 years on your terms and get the guy you want. leach may turn the sec on its ear for all we know... i'm just saying he's there with a ready made staff by friday.
Steve I know he played some and had some good games I was just saying they wanted to move him to the D. I was saying run the wishbone think of that. Jason Campbell, Ronnie Brown, Caddy, and Jacobs in the backfield together.
For some reason that movie by Jim Carey, Liar Liar.
What are you going to do?
I'm going to whine and complain and then been over and take it up the ole wazoo.
Ah, you've been here before.
They wanted Jacobs at TE if I remember correctly. Switching to the wishbone wasn't going to happen and the wishbone is way to predictable for modern defenses.
Gus may get a chance at the wishbone: Dyer, Lattimore, and Seastrunk. Probably no room left (or need) for Lache, at this point.
According to Latest in Auburn News: Calvin Smith has decommitted from Tennessee and is considering Auburn, among others. He is high school teammates with Corey Lemonier.
Smith has offers from every major SEC program
I agree about the wishbone but they still would have to stop it and that would be hard.
It was D I had a few classes with him and hung out with a few of the guys he said D but whatever.
For UT I am for Calhoun I think he will take it.
I like the flexibility of Malzahn's offense. A player needs to be able to do more than one thing, but I think Gus can find a way to get players involved more easily than in a more traditional offense.
Chris Low: "Kippy Brown has been named the Vols' interim coach. Brown on Wednesday said he's been told that he also would be considered for the permanent head-coaching job."
Yeah, right. Talk to Ruffin McNeil, Kippy.
Sometimes they do hire the interim coach. Dabo is a fine example. Jeff Fisher was once a young coordinator with maybe 2 years exp at that position and was the interim coach...16 years later he's still the man in charge.
shon coleman gained the prestigous 5th star yesterday on rivals. he has steadily climbed up the recruiting rankings as his season and all star workouts were standout. i gotta give props to the bammers at rivals for actually giving an AU commit the 5th. it's still not like a guy that goes from a 2 star to 5 overnight because bammer offered, but it is a step toward equality.
Let's hope he's still on our list come signing day...he's about as soft a commit as you'll get.
To a large extent, speed has killed the wishbone. Some will compare it to Paul Johnson's option offense, but they are different critters. Johnson's offense uses a lot of motion and misdirection that you didn't typically see in wishbone teams. There are actually some similarities between Johnson's offense and the modern spread offenses, although there are obvious differences is the QB reads and the ability to pass. You will see some of Johnson's plays that will remind you of some of Malzahn's because it appears you have players running in every direction.
chip chip - rivals probably thinks Coleman's "soft verbal" is about to melt away.
Give Shon the blue (and orange) pill and everything should be fine.
i know. but it is encouraging our guys evaluated and got a commit from him while everyone else was gaga over robinson. now coleman is the elite prospect. even if we lose him, i have to like what the staff was able to do ahead of most others.
Kippy? Wasn't he new to the staff and coaching, what, wide receivers? There seems to be a touch of insanity in the air.
Anybody heard anything on whose bushes UGA is beating for an OC?
It's been a while for that one!
Leach = wow?
kippy = huh?
Leach just got fired with cause in what was a much publicized falling out with the school...where he is a legend among fans. If Hamilton hires this guy, he better do it with his boxes already packed and a whoopie cushion waiting for the next guy.
Leach would definitely be a wow hire, although there definitely is just as many bad sides of the wow as good.
Kippy coached on the staff with Majors and Fulmer. He's not some guy who arrived in town 3 weeks ago with no clue about Tennessee.
He was the position coach when they had the great run of WRs -- Tim McGee, Carl Pickens, etc.
missinit, you mean DC, correct?
shouldn't hamilton do that anyway?
A co-worker had the best idea I've heard yet:
Send a plane to Jeff Tedford and tell him whatever it takes is what he'll get.
Flip it!
Boom.
Now!
