BEAT BAMA!!!!!!!!

per knoxville radio email blast:

Air Force football coach Troy Calhoun has scheduled a meeting with his players at 5:50 p.m., according to the Colorado Springs Gazette.

There is no indication regarding whether or not the meeting is related to the coaching vacancy at UT, but Calhoun is widely considered one of the top candidates for the position.

UT athletic director Mike Hamilton has not responded to any requests for comments.

Bringing the Paul Johnson style offense to the SEC will be very interesting. Considering the running talent UT has, they should be good to go.

This hire will affect their recruiting class more than most. Receivers and QBs will definitely have to reconsider their options.

Don't be so sure he brings the triple option with him, Calhoun was the OC for the Houston Texans before taking the job at Air Force.

EVERYBODY LOVES THE A.D.

Tennessee coach Mike Hamilton stumbles into his house last night, hungry and bewildered at his task.

His wife, Mrs. Hamilton, smiles pertly.

"Sorry, Snookums, I didn't cook dinner. Didn't know when you were going to be home," he says.

Mike shakes his head dejectedly.

"I know. This coach thing is wearing me out. I haven't eaten. I'm starving, and all everybody wants is to know who's gonna be the coach.

"So, what should we do?"

Mrs. Hamilton quickly replies, "How 'bout Calhoun's?"

Hamilton dashes to the phone, calling Air Force coach Troy Calhoun and offering him the job. Calhoun, stunned, gratefully accepts.

Mrs. Hamilton looks aghast.

"Why on earth did you do that?" she said.

"You said you wanted Calhoun," Mike says.

Says the Mrs., "I wanted ribs, you dumb@$$."

Found this Dansby quote posted on another site. Don't know where it came from, but I know people get upset when he says he is from Woodlawn High School.

"While leading the Cardinals' defense, Dansby also kept track of Auburn's run to the Outback Bowl under first year head coach Gene Chizik, who finished 8-5.

"Auburn is just like a second home to me, man. To have Gene Chizik at the helm is even better, because he was my defensive coordinator," Dansby said.

"I'm just anxious to see next season, because they had so much success this sesaon. I'm anxious to see how well they do. They opened the offense up. That's different for the SEC. It's a new feel, and I hope it grows into something special at Auburn."

This is sooooooooo totally off topic but is probably one American Idol audition I will remember.

For those of you who hate idol just ignore.

In last night's final audition from Atlanta, a guy comes out who is obviously waaaaay over 28 years old and gives a 5-star performance. It was a song he wrote.

This is it:

(or my interpretation thereof, since I could have missed a word or two)

PANTS ON THE GROUND!

Pants on the ground,
Pants on the ground,

with the gold in yo mouth,
hat turned sideways,
pants on the ground

Call yourself a cool cat,
Looking like a fool.
Walking downtown with you pants on the ground.

Get 'em up!

Hey,

Get yo pants off the ground, looking like a fool,
walking,
talking,
with you pants on the ground.

Get em up!

Repeat several times....it was a classic.

This 62 man is passionate and I understand why.

That 2003 defense in general was pretty solid. With a less anemic offense, they would have a decent shot of beating USC, Tech and Georgia that year. Ole Miss was just a tough loss for the whole team all around.

LSU's the only game where I felt like we just got spanked all across the board.

1:18 PM
Blogger Jet said...

E-Bro,

Let's not talk about 2003. It just makes me mad.

1:25 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

2003 the D was fine, I agree with E-Bro, with a little help from the offense it would have been a lot better.

USC was pretty much handed a 7-0 lead very early.

The D played fine vs GaTech.

One busted play against Ole Miss to the full back killed us.

However, the LSU game was a disaster and I view the UGA one the same way.

1:26 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

With Jonathan Crompton I think triple option is their best option.

1:26 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

That 2003 LSU team was pretty tough...

The put a physical beatdown on Alabama that year in Bryant Denny...

Worst one I've ever witnessed in person.

1:26 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

As far as bright spots in 2003, Carnell Williams had 1,300 yards and 17 TD's, so that was definately good.

Dansby, Brown and Thomas were as solid as you can be at LB.

1:27 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Wasn't Crompton a senior?

1:27 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

UT boards seem to think it is the Air Force guy.

1:27 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

RK- And he did that without scoring the first 2 games.

Crompton is going to get a seventh year of eligibility to further work on his porn star mustache.

1:28 PM
Blogger Kathy said...

Yeah CH=B. I've heard Karlos explain the reason he mentions his high school. He said he wanted to inspire those kids in that high school that you can obtain high goals. I have always been a Dansby fan.

Signing Day 2/3. A-Day game 4/17. When does Spring practice officially start?

1:30 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Jet...look away.

I don't think the UGA game was a disaster for the defense. If I remember correctly, the offense, as was typical that year, put the defense in some tough spots early on. After that, defense played pretty well and with a half-decent offense, we could've got back into the game.

1:31 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

And if it is not the Air Force guy...where the heck do they go?

Would have to be Cutcliff then..right?

1:33 PM

Blogger FSJ said...

I saw something yesterday where UT averaged 29 points a game this year...yet went 7-6. I didn't think of them as an offensive powerhouse this year. Just goes to show you how much football has changed in the last 15 years. Back then if you averaged 29 points a game with a decent defense... you probably won 10 games or so.

1:42 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

IF UT has hired Coach Calhoun, I bet we don't hear the Coach Calhoun wasn't committed to Air Force in leaving his players less than 3 weeks to signing day. But with that said, anybody that plays football at Air Force better be committed to the school and nation first, not the coach.

1:43 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Well Eddie, two days ago for the majority of the UT fan base, Kiffin was the answer.

1:44 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

FSJ...it's worth noting that games against Western Kentucky and Memphis inflated those stats a bit. I think Crompton might have had something like ten touchdown passes against both those teams.

Same goes for us against Ball St. and Furman, though I think we were legitimately a good offense outside of LSU and Kentucky.

1:46 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Calhoun has also been at the program for 3 years and has done a good job for them.

1:46 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Yeah, Crompton and Todd had on paper really really good seasons going by the final stats.

However they put up 70% of their numbers in 25% of their games.

1:50 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

One and done just seems shadier to me than 3 years. This is also another example of why CFB needs an early signing period. The timetable for the off-season and NSD is just too truncated.

1:50 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Seanzie- I think the early signing day period is coming. It's just a matter of time.

Blogger E-Bro said...

BEASLEY!!

2:05 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Cut is a bammer technically...

He's really a Vol.

2:05 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

FSJ...how much does it hurt to say that?

A Bammer is truly a Vol.

The horror.

2:07 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I say Fulmer should come on as AD and be the Interim HC for this season and then hire the next coach after next season completes.

2:07 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Doesn't hurt me much at all....I really don't ponder Cutcliffe...

I certainly hope UT hires him. There are no more Manning children in the pipeline so he will be mediocre at best.

2:08 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Eddie...that's a thought.

But that would be kind of a slippery slope if he ends up having a decent year, which doesn't seem likely given some of the holes they have to replace.

2:09 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

There is a huge difference between what Calhoun wold be doing and what Kiffikin did. It isn't just the one and done thing. It is that Calhoun is going to a significantly higher profile coaching position. Yes, USC is considered higher profile, but it isn't close to the difference between Air Force and Tennessee. Additionally, it isn't nearly as out of the blue. It is being discussed. I had absolutely no clue Kiffikin was going to leave.

2:10 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Yeah, but if he was really successful, what would the fans want?

2:11 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I'm just imagining Mike Hamilton listening to Ryan Adams' "When the Stars Go Blue" on repeat the last 45 hours or so.

2:11 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Wow, so who will be next in line for UT?

2:12 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

RK...I'll take the job.

2:12 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Eddie, Fulmer as an interim would make a lot of sense for both. I think Fulmer would love it and wouldn't feel slighted if it was clear he was just the interim coach. If UT did great, keep him. That isn't a crazy scenario, but I doubt the AD would like it.

2:13 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

If it isn't the Air Force guy..

I would say Cutcliffe...

After that....I hope they get Trooper. Just kidding.

2:13 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I think UT fans might have learned their lesson from the 2006-2007 seasons.

Fulmer followed up his 5-6 in 2005 with a couple of decent seasons, only to fall back again in 2008.

Sustained success hasn't really been Phil's thing as of late.

2:14 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

For enough money I'll put on that putrid shade of orange and repeat the General's maxims....

2:14 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- In my scenario, Fulmer is the New AD. Come to rescue the faithful. Mike Hamilton is all but fired right now.

2:14 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I can't see them getting Tropper as a head coach. It will be a stretch for them to hire him as the OC.

2:14 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Apparently Calhoun's statement is on the Air Force athletic website.

2:15 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, I actually like that idea in some ways, Eddie. But do you want your AD to be someone which had so much problems in terms of discipline and his players? That is what I think really killed Fulmer.

2:16 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I'd take Derek Dooley before Cut.

2:17 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- We are talking about a fan base that is jilted. Fulmer cried for them when he left, Kiffin had to have a police escort to leave without being beaten to death. I think they are more understanding now than ever.

2:17 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

RK...

I agree 100%.

2:17 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Derek Dooley or Petersen from Boise State would be a good hire. Petersen could be one of the best of all offseason moves.

2:19 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

"Fulmer as an interim would make a lot of sense for both."

I think he'd be a bad choice as coach and as AD.

He's not a businessman so that makes the AD part difficult in today's landscape.

As a coach, he'd be working for an AD who didn't want him 14 months ago.

2:19 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

Maybe they'll hire Clawson from Bowling Green.

In retrospect I'd like to commend Jay Jacobs on his coaching search. It was nothing like this debacle.

Granted, Auburn wasn't taken by surprise or anything like UT was...but still.

My fav quote so far from VolChat:

On the plane coming back from Colorado Tuesday. Gruden supposedly turned him down, just like Muschamp, Calhoun, the checkout lady at Kroger's, the Comcast technician who came over Monday to fix my cable, the nice waiter at Jocks And Jills who served CelticVol and I lunch today, David Hasselhoff, etc., etc.

Yeah, when Mike Hamilton talks, people listen.

Obviously with hindsight, Kiffikin was a stupid hire. But was firing Fulmer another stupid mistake?

2:45 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

No Steve..

Fulmer was stale...moreso than Tuberville, IMO.

Blogger chip chip said...

leach and staff are available and ready to go. they could recruit to their system well i think. will it work? name a better option out there for them at this point. i don't think it would be a total disaster and might even be fun.

2:48 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Sounds like Hamilton is going to have to pull a Mal Moore and take a risk and just throw the Monopoly guy at someone.

2:48 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

has he been officially ruled out by ut?

2:48 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Fulmer had more problems, but look at what this is doing to the reputation of UT. The same thing happened with Bama and it is why they had to sell their soul to Saban. At times in the past both the UT and Bama head coaching positions were viewed as some of the best positions in college football. Now UT is getting turned down by the head coach of Air Force?

Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I'm thinking they will pull someone no one saw coming. Aka Chizik

2:52 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

If I remember correctly, Jacobs had a 200 yard game against MSU. We just didn't have a an open position for him to get a lot of carries.

2:52 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

That should have been ALA Chizik.

I meant kinda like we did Chizik, no they will get Chizik... that would be teh suck.

2:53 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

i'm sure leach's baggage is scary right now, but he's the most successful coach available on the market and tubs just let most of his former staff at ttu go. get the boys together in pumpkin outfits and head to kvill. ruffin mcneil would make fulmer look like a small gourd in all orange.

2:53 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Leach would be a wow hire, but he would also be a risky hire. With all the bad publicity and the allegations against Leach, UT might not to want to stick their head back in the lion's mouth.

2:53 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Seanzie ...

That's exactly what they have to do. That's what they should have done with Muschamp. Now, they'll overpay for either Mohammed, Jugdish, Sidney, Clayton or Lonny.

Larry.

Mal Moore is the Doug Flutie of ADs.

2:56 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

yeah. i think the perception leach is risky has to have lessened as the search drags on. if it doesn't work, regroup in 3-4 years on your terms and get the guy you want. leach may turn the sec on its ear for all we know... i'm just saying he's there with a ready made staff by friday.

Steve I know he played some and had some good games I was just saying they wanted to move him to the D. I was saying run the wishbone think of that. Jason Campbell, Ronnie Brown, Caddy, and Jacobs in the backfield together.

2:57 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

For some reason that movie by Jim Carey, Liar Liar.

What are you going to do?

I'm going to whine and complain and then been over and take it up the ole wazoo.

Ah, you've been here before.

2:57 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

They wanted Jacobs at TE if I remember correctly. Switching to the wishbone wasn't going to happen and the wishbone is way to predictable for modern defenses.

2:59 PM
Blogger Commish of Old Pimps said...

Gus may get a chance at the wishbone: Dyer, Lattimore, and Seastrunk. Probably no room left (or need) for Lache, at this point.

According to Latest in Auburn News: Calvin Smith has decommitted from Tennessee and is considering Auburn, among others. He is high school teammates with Corey Lemonier.

Smith has offers from every major SEC program

3:02 PM
Blogger bigdaddy334 said...

I agree about the wishbone but they still would have to stop it and that would be hard.

It was D I had a few classes with him and hung out with a few of the guys he said D but whatever.

For UT I am for Calhoun I think he will take it.

3:03 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I like the flexibility of Malzahn's offense. A player needs to be able to do more than one thing, but I think Gus can find a way to get players involved more easily than in a more traditional offense.

Chris Low: "Kippy Brown has been named the Vols' interim coach. Brown on Wednesday said he's been told that he also would be considered for the permanent head-coaching job."

Yeah, right. Talk to Ruffin McNeil, Kippy.

3:06 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Sometimes they do hire the interim coach. Dabo is a fine example. Jeff Fisher was once a young coordinator with maybe 2 years exp at that position and was the interim coach...16 years later he's still the man in charge.

shon coleman gained the prestigous 5th star yesterday on rivals. he has steadily climbed up the recruiting rankings as his season and all star workouts were standout. i gotta give props to the bammers at rivals for actually giving an AU commit the 5th. it's still not like a guy that goes from a 2 star to 5 overnight because bammer offered, but it is a step toward equality.

3:07 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Let's hope he's still on our list come signing day...he's about as soft a commit as you'll get.

3:08 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

To a large extent, speed has killed the wishbone. Some will compare it to Paul Johnson's option offense, but they are different critters. Johnson's offense uses a lot of motion and misdirection that you didn't typically see in wishbone teams. There are actually some similarities between Johnson's offense and the modern spread offenses, although there are obvious differences is the QB reads and the ability to pass. You will see some of Johnson's plays that will remind you of some of Malzahn's because it appears you have players running in every direction.

3:09 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

chip chip - rivals probably thinks Coleman's "soft verbal" is about to melt away.

Give Shon the blue (and orange) pill and everything should be fine.

3:09 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

i know. but it is encouraging our guys evaluated and got a commit from him while everyone else was gaga over robinson. now coleman is the elite prospect. even if we lose him, i have to like what the staff was able to do ahead of most others.

kippy = huh?

3:12 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Leach just got fired with cause in what was a much publicized falling out with the school...where he is a legend among fans. If Hamilton hires this guy, he better do it with his boxes already packed and a whoopie cushion waiting for the next guy.

3:12 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Leach would definitely be a wow hire, although there definitely is just as many bad sides of the wow as good.

3:13 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Kippy coached on the staff with Majors and Fulmer. He's not some guy who arrived in town 3 weeks ago with no clue about Tennessee.

He was the position coach when they had the great run of WRs -- Tim McGee, Carl Pickens, etc.

3:13 PM
