From the "Seriously?" Department
Hey everyone. From the Dothan Eagle comes this hilarious interesting story about Tommy Tuberville.
The new Texas Tech coach is interviewing Troy offensive coordinator Neal Brown for the Red Raiders' OC position. Why do I find this funny?
Brown is the closest thing one can get to Tony Franklin without hiring Tony Franklin. Brown worked for Franklin at Troy and has described himself as a Franklin protege.
It's the circle of life.

Now THAT is funny! Do you think Tubs will let him run his offense?
this tells me that the issue was NOT CTF but rather the other assist. coaches.
This tells me that Tuberville may have lost his mind.
4:40 p.m. CST
"This tells me that Tuberville may have lost his mind."
4:41 p.m. CST
Firemedics dispatched to an office to treat an unconscious 46 year old male.
By the way, to say this means it was the assistants, not Franklin doesn't seem right. I do think there is plenty of blame to be shared and it is pointless to attempt to point to one person. If you point to one person, it has to be Tuberville. He created the situation in the first place.
Texas Hawley Tech got exactly what they deserved.
If Brown goes, he's crazy.
Texas Hawley Tech ... I love it.
dems books
PF...from the last thread.
Why's it gotta be UT-Noog?
That's cold.
Larry Blakeney's reaction:
"If you do that, Neal, they'll keep you down in the home, cuz."
What is worse than loosing your job because you hired you OC from Troy? Loosing two jobs in a row because you hired you OC from Troy.
Ok, this would be sorta like the ending of Back to the Future ... except this time, Hugh Nall is washing Tony Franklin's car.
Ok...now this is hilarious substance!
Maybe Tubs had that "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" procedure where part of your memory is taken away.
Without the memory of failure, you're doomed to fail again.
WSteveFCk,
after reading my Chizik post, do you get why the whole coach gambling on the team thing got Rose tossed?
Hint: Overusing pitchers.
I still think Rose needs to be in the Hall as a player, though.
In related news, John McCain says if he "had to do it over again," he would have picked Bristol Palin.
Pete Rose shouldn't be in the HoF, BTW.
The story also says Franklin is the guy who brought Brown to Troy. Incredible. I can die now. I have heard it all.
my keyboard is back, to extra letter mode. grrrr.
WOW! That's great Bass!
TT returning to the Franklin well is explained by remembering one of his well-known traits: laziness.
Best hitter ever, Biff. What he did later sucks, but he's more of a HOFer than half the guys in.
Jet...
Regarding your Bristol Palin statement...there is a book coming out tomorrow ("Game Change") that is a behind the scenes view of the primaries and general election. It is getting a lot of buzz. I think I may have to read that one.
You don't become one of the winningest SEC coaches by being lazy. That is just silly.
Pete Rose should be in HoF.
Gran turned him down.
Mazzone just took another job.
Petrino is a head coach.
Nall's seeing a man about a set of white walls.
Ensminger is getting his nipples re-pierced.
Franklin won't return his calls.
What else is he supposed to do?
Oh no...here we go...
I'm outta here! Have a great night, Hotties, and WDE!
Palin is going to be working for FOX news and is supposedly a possible 2012 presidential candidate. I just don't see it happening.
He said he was gonna interview 4-5 guys for each coordinator position. Maybe this is a quota interview.
And here we go!
I keep telling you people - New Shimmer is a dessert topping!
Is Tony Franklin still driving a Hyundai loaded with lots of books about Facebook scams?
It's time for a bowl of Colon Blow!
PF, that is possible. I had been assuming CTT would leave the offensive staff largely in tact.
Put Rose in the HoF as "Charlie Hustle"
That way "Pete Rose" isn't in, but the best contact hitter to play the game is.
nooooooooooooooooooooo. stop. someone post pretty pictures before I end up kicking a puppy.
love it greg...btw, are you what's her face's greg?
SteveFC, perhaps Tubs can coax Nall, "the greatest offensive line coach in the history of college football," out of that sweet trucking gig in Albany.
Now is the time for Paulmain to make an appearance. Or, for Comm'r to auto-post.
No, am NOT 'her' Greg
Perhaps I may need a new handle...
PF - Good question.
Nall is one of the coaches I think he would go after. Also, Willis may also be a possibility. I am sure Gran is out of reach now.
Did everyone else hear Lubbock Texas just say "whatthe...?!?!?"
I think he's obligated to keep the Leach/Franklin disciple as OL coach.
Maybe Tubs will go after David Gibbs for the DC position.
I was thinking Maurice Gibb for DC.
Whatcha doin' in your base?
You should be blitzin', yeah!
He'd talk some jive.
And when it didn't work he'd just be Blamin' It All On The Nights Of Broadway.
And then they'd be feelin' right, feelin' Tubs Fever!
One day Tubs and Tony will reunite, and Tubs will say, "I just cain't quit you!"
BTW I heard Al Borges is really tired of the beauty that is San Diego and would be up for a gig in the middle of nowhere Texas
you dudes are old.
So's your face.
Zing.
Any speculation about who is going to get the USC job now?
wait, you're not old, Ginger. how'd you get into the MG conversation?
I'm not old.
I'm 'vintage'
I'm old and married.
PF, you're halfway there.
I heard Jim Leavitt is looking for a gig. South Florida . Southern California, it's kinda the same thing
Patterson/Peterson?
I have become comfortably numb.
Greg,
I've heard Mike Riley and Jack Del Rio listed as possible replacements. Riley supposedly is up for a new contract at Oregon State though.
Del Rio is an alum too isn't he?
Anyone have feelings about the possibility of Phat Phil going to USF? The AD doesn't exactly have a lot(any?) of hiring experience and could get bamboozled.
I think Riley had already refuted things is about to sign his contract extension.
Riley's contract was signed, I thought.
Del Rio is probably it. He's done for in Jax.
Fulmer to USF doesn't seem like a good fit to me.
http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/2010/01/11/tommy-tuberville-answers-a-few-questions/#more-14155
Jack Del Rio?!? Seriously?
Guess that lifetime .509 winning pct looks better to them than me.
E-Bro, why in the world would you think Tuberville would go after Gibbs? Do you know something?
USCw deserves a coach like Morris Buttermaker but less successful.
I can't see CTT going for Borges. I think he made it pretty clear he is dedicated to the spread.
Nice article Jet.
I especially liked the 1.5 point coupon idea.
WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!!!!
"That's an I formation, coach." Classic.
I hadn't heard Fulmer to USF, but I did read where the Bowden boys are both candidates.
Steve...I know nothing.
Personally, I feel Gibb's matador defense principles would mesh well with the Big 12 style of defense (outside of Texas).
footballcoachscoop.com
To prove his dedication to the spread, Tubs announces that "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" will be the official spread of the Texas Tech training table.
michaelfillscoolerswithpoop.com
We really need to thank Jay G for teeing this one up for us for Puppet Hour.
Del Rio looks like a good possiblity. Remember that Carroll wasn't looking so hot when they plucked him from the NFL. College is an entirely different game than the pros. Ask Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, Butch Davis.....
Fulmer seems like he has all of the downsides of Tubs, but with no upside.
As someone who almost kinda sorta pulls for USF, I hope its not Fulmer.
Del Rio sounds right for USC, some "source from inside of the program" said they were looking at NFL coaches.
Other than Gibbs, there isn't really another DC Tuberville had who would be a possibility, other than the guy he brought from Ole Miss. What was the name? Levill? Something like that.
NFL coaches are used to dealing with all of the drama of Professional players like the ones at USC.
BEASLEY!!!
Fulmer had many more down sides. He seems to loose control of the Tennessee program and it seemed like they had an entire section of the Knoxville police department dedicated to UT players. For me, Fulmer would be a no go.
I don't think Jon Lovett is interested in leaving The U for Texas Tech.
That would be crazy, right?
A buddy of mine said something about Jeff Fisher is on USC's list, not sure they can afford him though.
I slept most of the afternoon. I think I'm about ready to go to bed. Good night, Hotties.
Nor is his wife, Morgan Fairchild ... yeah.
Thanks. Lovett was the guy I was thinking of and I don't know where he ended up.
PC was .500 (including playoffs) in the NFL.
If USCw is really probation bound, would the job still be attractive to a top name coach?
Someone give Shula a call. I may no where he would fit.
I thought it was something like that, PF. I have no doubt USC would be willing to go after an NFL coach, even with a bad record.
My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Fulmer pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.
Repeating our top story tonight ... Ashley Judd is still hot.
Jet you ignorant slut.
Thats not very nice Norm, you should apologize to Jet and share you cookie with him.
cookies?
Texas hires AU DC = Success: therefore do it again.
Tubs hires Troy OC = Disaster:
therefore do it again?
Is it possible that college football's popularity is due as much to the off-field soap opera as the on-field intensity?
Wake - you can't make me. Remember, I've known Jet for sumpin like 30 years. So, if anyone here is qualified to call him names like that it just has to be me.
Not to go back to an earlier thread, but I think I would have a lot more respect for these baseball players if they just told the truth.
Don't tell us ten years later that it was foolish (duh). Just tell us the truth. You knew you were cheating and you thought you could get away with it.
I'd respect the guy for at least being honest.
Larry Blakeney says ....wtf ...are you a crazy man?
And he's still friends with you even though you call him mean names?
Leave him Norm, he's not nice to you.
Bro - in the spirit of your requested honesty, as I am currently, I often post on the HABOTN while or immediately after having consumed an adult beverage. I know it's not illegal or banned but I thought you should know.
Norm...you have my respect.
Another reason you can't have ANY gambling in sports:
When losses mount and can't be repaid ...the Bookie's direct relationship with the gambler opens the door for unethical/illegal repayment schemes.
It is strange, Hoopie. Ironically, I am sure Tuberville told Texas Tech what he intended to do, although he may not have mentioned Troy specifically.
I had been assuming that wherever Tuberville went he would go with some kind of spread offense, but I don't get talking with Brown. It is just strange. I didn't really think Franklin's version of the spread is what Tuberville invisioned.
Hoopie, that is a very good point. Rose could have lost a bet and then the bookie could come back and say, well, if your team was to loose next week....
I only condone gambling by athletes if they need the extra money to buy steroids.
Them roids ain't cheap.
And with that my peeps, that may be it for me. It's been a mighty long 36+ hours for me and I'm wiped. I'm taking it upstairs.
...or Rose could've abused his pitchers!
This has to be a a habotn first. We have two Hotties who have retired for the night and its only 630 ET
Wake can you make that four?
G'nite.
Apparently Aero counts as two people.
Goodnight Aero... both of you.
Pete Rose's worst mistake was that haircut.
Just my opinion though.
Nite ya'll. WBB soon.
Well, I'm getting tired. Off to bed I go.
Goodnight, hotties.
dammit. Five. better?
why didn't USF and TTech just trade coaches?
PF ..your abuse pitcher's comment is a more important point than mine, that why I qualified my statement as "another reason"
What's with everyone going to bed so early? Did I miss something?
Y'all had an interesting puppet hour. Sorry I missed it.
BTW,
I think Pete Rose should be in the HoF. And I like Borges.
Puppet hour was rocking today I see.
IMO, Nall has 0% chanceto ever coach again. 3 head coaches have been fired for handling players incorrectly. How do you think Nall will be looked upon with the impending Chaz Ramsey lawsuit?
Wow, hotties are dropping like flies. Y'all sure this isn't some delayed puppet assault?
Wonder if Ensminger will follow Tuberville to Lubbock?
Pete Rose was an incredible ball player. I just don't see how you can allow anything other than zero tolerance for gambling for sports. It breaks my heart, but I say he shouldn't go in.
Now that 'roids are banned ...zero tolerance for that also.
I say you can throw out anything he did as a manager thanks to the betting, but the man is better than 90% of those who are in the HOF, you gotta let him in.
FSJ
If he wants a job out side of high school he will follow
DL...That's what I am thinking.
The Texas Tech boards think he is being hired.
They also say they expect Willis to be named DC soon.
hoops, that was not directed at you. I was pretty sure you understood the situation.
I think who Tubs hires on the Defensive side of the ball isn't overly important, he was successful on that side of the ball no matter who was calling the plays. Who he hires on the offensive side will determine how successful his stay is at TT I think. I don't expect to see any familiar faces on his offensive staff.
Just spent some time on RedRaiders.com. Those folks are furious! They've got 60,000 folks signed up on a facebook page protesting the Leach firing.
Evidently Tubs today backed off of his pledge to not change the Air Raidn offense, is going to add a few wrinkles, is interviewing for new OCs and DCs, will only hire assistants approved by the Cordinators and only then will he evaluate the existing assistants.
YIKES!!!
There were plenty of furious Auburn fans when Chizik was hired too.
I dunno. If he had been elected to the HoF before the gambling was discovered, would he have been removed from the Hall? I say let him in the hall because that's a career that my grandchildren need to be aware of, but continue him being banned from baseball (and not allowed to set foot in any ballpark).
I have to show this off. This is my eldest daughter who graduated from Air Force Basic Training on Friday.
I couldn't be prouder.
what do you mean backed off? he said in his introduction speech that he'd be adding more running to the Air Raid thing. What's changed since then exactly?
Congrats to her Nova
CTT is building a new staff. The OC probably won't face the personality conflicts that Franklin did.
I really think Tubbs is getting franklin 2.0 to save his but...
TT is a pass happy O.. They have the skills for a pass happy O....
He will do fine on D so give the peps what they want play D to win games and get off the hot seat..
JMHO
I agree with zero tolerance for betting and roids.
Some irony ....many TTU fans are already lumping Tubs in as part of the PTB and are expecting the worst.
How's he gonna sell this?
DL, I do think CTT wanted to go to the spread anyway, but there are many different versions of the spread. Why to go with the Franklin System kind of mystifies me.
By the way Jay, your buddy Moon was criticized a bit for interviewing Franklin long after barbequegate was over, but now might be a good chance for you to interview him. You could get his impressions of both Brown and Tuberville. I would love to hear the discussions. Did Tuberville call Franklin to see if there where someone he would recommend? This just seems too wacky to be true.
Remember where Chris "The Noodle" Todd came from? Texas Tech. There is some weird worm hole developing between Auburn and Tubbock.
PF ..He obviously isn't keeping the OC and won't keep any assistants unless the new OC approves. Now unless he bought the playbook and DVDs from Leach, I don't see how he could keep the "Air Raid" in place.
I sortof feel guilty for snickering at someone else's pain right now, but I guess that it's more of a relief that it finally ain't us.
While i'm not going to become a huge Red Raider fan or anything, I would like to see some games where Tuberville is coaching...however, i'm not going to buy some ESPN expanded coverage package just to see Texas Tech play when there's no other good games on. Does anyone know of a way to transfer ESPN 360 to a television?
Ohh, in a related note...it would be rather cool for Tuberville to pull one of his big game moments and knock off Oklahoma his first year. He also gets to coach against Paul Rhoads in October.
Good call on CTT pulling the upset Bellfay.
CTT vs Rhoads ....the worm hole widens.
Bellefay, 360 does come in HD, and you can easily connect your computer to your TV through various means (by easily, I mean contact your local tech expert friend).
Hoops, My mistake. I didn't realize the Air Raid was a specific scheme. Thought it was just a term for a pass happy philosophy.

I haven't tried ESPN360 on my new 4gig memory laptop. The old 1 gig would fragment when showing 360.
I wish CTT well. If he's reenergized, I think he'll do well, especially in a weaker conference.
PF ...I think the "Air Raid" term originated at TTU, but is now used somewhat universally as you described. I just figgered since CTT was addressing the TTU folks....
From the comments I read if CTT did anything other than put a few wrinkles into the Leach offense, those "Leach Loyal" TTU folks will be upset.
The Air Raid started at Kentucky.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a known CTT supporter and wish him well. It just seems that after all the extraneous controversy that was manufactured and thrown at him while at AU, he would have gone somewhere without all that baggage.
I guess Chizik has provided a pretty good blueprint for handling such a situation and Tubs got a good view of that.
Did Leach run Mummy's offense at TTU?
It was derived from Mummy, just like Franklin's system.
There is a bit on the air-raid offense here.
Thanks Steve. Wikipedia is certainly current.
Yea, I am a wikipedia lover. Sometimes it is scary how quickly things get updated on there.
Sometimes it is scary how inaccurate it is. But I would probably trust it for a football reference.
"Offensive tackle Shon Coleman told Scout.com that he considered himself a "soft commit" and would take other visits to Tennessee, Miami (Fla.), Arkansas and Ole Miss. Receiver Trovon Reed told his local newspaper that he planned to take an official visit to LSU on Jan. 23, but it's not clear if that will happen."
Do we lose Coleman and/or Reed?
I don't know about Reed, but I think Coleman has been listed as a soft verbal for awhile.
Wikipedia's not accurate?
Well there's fifty pages of dissertation work down the tubes.
Coleman definitely has been a "soft" guy for a while now.
Reed, until now, seemed solid. That's if he takes the LSU trip.
Air Raid started before Kentucky.
I was there when Mumme came and he already was doing this stuff somewhere else. Valdosta, I think?
Valdosta is correct Jay.
Air raids actually started in World War I, the first war in which airplanes were used as weapons.
As I recall, World War I was fought in Europe, not Kentucky or south Georgia.
The white zone is reserved for the loading and unloading of passengers.
Actually, a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, a ton of air raids happened all the time. And they used lasers.
michael's pants are on fire.
The red zone has always been for loading and unloading of passengers. There's never stopping in a white zone.
At the risk of not reading all these comments,
If I hired Franklin, and got myself "fired" with $5M buyout, why not hire a Franklin protege and try hitting that lottery again?
SIAP, Broadway Joe's daughter arrested in Florida for drug and alcohol possession.
this will be like crossing the streams in ghostbusters.
i think he will find recruiting harder now that the offensive "name brand" that drew recruits to lubbock is gone. guys didn't go there to play d. i'd love to see him succeed and wreck havoc in the big 12. i just thing the deck is too stacked against him and it took a gimmick like leach to get kids to come.
Wow, Jet was absolutely on fire today. My nominee for headline quote:
Ok, this would be sorta like the ending of Back to the Future ... except this time, Hugh Nall is washing Tony Franklin's car.
Sheer genius. Kudos, Jetster!
Read about this earlier today...oh my goodness...really Tubs?
BTW, I can totally see Tubs pulling an upset of the Longhorns in week 3.
Then getting blown out by Iowa State two weeks later.
is he going to be on the losing end of 3-2 vs. isu?
I can see him getting worked if he doesn't have it together. Maybe he can get some d goin over there though. We'll see, it won't be rank and file like with the bbq boys, he's gonna have to work a little more.
Off topic:
Anyone ever watch 'Men of a Certain Age'?
Tonights episode is very funny. Come on TNT.
I can't really see CTT making Tuberville any more than an Ole Miss or Arkansas. Texas and A&M will dominate that state. Texas Tech will likely have solid teams, but I doubt they will reach as high as Leach did. It takes a mad genuis to do that. Unless Tuberville hires one, it will be tough.
Believe me, I know about Air Raids.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
And it's not over now. It's not over until we say it is.
Mike Tyson is the host or RAW and apparently will be involved in a match. They are referring to him as the baddest man on the planet. Someone is about 20 years behind the times.
It's not so much the Circle of Life as it is the Vicious Cycle.
OK, we're gettin' close, and I imagine Norm has checked out.
Gumpians ...
May I recommend SaZa's, or whatever it's called, for dinner?
Open kitchen, good menu, solid food. Good time.
After reading the Dothan Eagle article: Is it just me or does Troy take their coaches' mug shots right after the keg party?
2ndAid ...
I think that's entirely possible.
The news is on here. Should I go to bed shortly, or should I stay up to watch reruns of CSI: HABOTN.
It's blanks, right?
See if you can guess what I am now?
A zit! Get it?!?
FOOD FIGHT!
TOGA! TOGA!
This could be the best night of your lives, but you're gonna make it the worst!
You mind if we dance with your women?
Not me!
It's time.
BOOM SHAKALAKA!
