Hey everyone. Ivan Maisel, esteemed Alabamian, reports that former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville has accepted the job at Texas Tech.

Let's see what happens.

Surprising they offered him or not? I guess I find it interesting to go from an offensive program to a defensive minded coach.

Hmmm, wonder where he stood with the USF job.

how in the world did I misplace a period like that? I hate this stupid laptop sometimes.

1:53 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

This makes sense. It isn't the perfect place for him, but it will be interesting. Taking over one of the top programs in the nation that is troubled by a very politically incorrect coach makes sense. The real question is if Tuberville will allow the wide open offense to continue.

does this free up money at auburn

2:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't believe so, BigDaddy. I am under the impression Auburn wrote Tuberville a check and that was the end of it.

2:18 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I do wonder if the USF opening basically called Tech's hand. USF has become and attractive spot.

2:21 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

There is some serious ironic irony going on here.

Blogger CHB said...

The next thread I hope to see is Lebo out as Au's basketball coach. I wish him well, but in his 6th year there is no reason for Auburn to be this bad.

2:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Agreed, CH=B. Lebo has been given a very fair chance. They may give him one more season so he gets his time in the new arena, but I am doubting it.

Aeronaut, what is your point?

Correction ...

Glad he found a new gig, but I can't see TT@TT for very long. Maybe he'll get to College Station eventually.

2:47 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I doubt you will see TT jumping around much. It just seems to me that he wants somewhere to settle down. I certainly could be wrong, but I think he just enjoys coaching.

AU not in top 25 for next year

2:50 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

That charles hollis (the guy whose article you just linked to) is a pathetic lying bammer. There was no unofficial contact.

Auburn had zero interest in him, and there was no unofficial anything whatsoever...from Tubs leaving to Chizik hiring.

I was wondering what was your point when you brought up the irony part.

2:52 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Interesting, but things will change once the season draws closer. A lot will depend upon what happens between now and then, but I am guessing we will be in the top 25 or close to it.

We don't have a lot of question marks on this team, but what happens at QB will influence a lot.

Whether Etheridge returns and how many of the recruits actually make it to fall camp could also influence things.

Besides, preseason polls are pretty much meaningless.

2:54 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

Go Tubs. Good for him!

2:55 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Wow, they have TCU at number 6. That is pretty surprising. I don't see how you rank a team which is going through a head coaching change so high. Who knows what that team will look like next season.

Thanks for the link. It is very interesting.

2:57 PM

I hope it is true about Tubs going to TTU I wish him well and think he will do a good job. Smart people learn from their mistakes and I think Tubs is very smart.

Am I missing something about Patterson? I haven't heard about him going anywhere?

2:59 PM
Blogger Howard said...

I just hope he finds a solid OC and gets to establish his defense. Tech could be very good if they can build on the talent that is there and start playing some D.

2:59 PM
Blogger Miller said...

So... when do we get some good news about the basketball team? Has Lebo cleaned out his office yet?

3:01 PM

stevefc,
TCU is not going through a coaching change... Patterson just signed an extension mid-season...

3:03 PM

Thanks, D. Miller. My mistake.

3:05 PM

You will believe this, but we lost to South Carolina in basketball.

So Texas Tech boards thinks their DC will be Willis.

3:10 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

Lebo is very fortunant that I am not in Jacobs shoes. This SC game, at home, would have been a must win game for him to see Sunday morning as Auburn Basketball coach.

3:12 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Who's going to coach the team if Lebo is fired? There is not interim lying around.

3:15 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

"fortunate" I can't spell good

3:15 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Steve.... basketball team losing was fully expected...

kathy, I had heard that Willis was a condidate for DC at Louisville under Charlie strong... so him going to TT to be Tubs DC isn't that much of a stretch... it could happen. Watching who Tubs fills out his staff with out there will be interesting to see...

3:16 PM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

Sorry I couldn't b around earlier. I'm working both jobs today. At least the hospital here has wifi so can stay on the habotn. So do we hav an estimated fire date for Lebo yet?

3:16 PM

Go to the nearest "Y" pick up a coach. He will do better than Lebo.
J/K He will stay to the end of this year.

3:34 PM

I don't think Jacobs would try the 'interim coach can't do any worse' theory ever again in his life.

His deal is for five years and in the range of $2 million a year, a source told ESPN.com's Chris Low.

"It's great to be back in the game again," Tuberville told ESPN.com's Ivan Maisel when reached on his cell phone in Auburn, Ala.

I think TT will work a lot harder at TT then he did his last few years at AU. He got complacent. I don't think he will be there.

3:40 PM

guessing my thoughts on which job Tubs would end up with proved to be true...I just always thought he and TT seemed like a better fit than he and USF.

3:42 PM

Tuberville, 55, became a strong candidate when it was determined he would not insist on hiring his own staff, a source told ESPN.com's Maisel. Tuberville also will not cost Tech a contract buyout.

3:45 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

USF and TT seem to be very similar programs. Teams with no success until the most recent regime (in USF's case thats the only regime) neither program has much class. Both are considered to be 2nd tier programs in a very talent rich state.

3:46 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Ugh. And I called him, too!

3:47 PM
Blogger Aeronaut said...

Probably right now xCTT is on phone with sexton discussing if tossing his name for the USF job would get him a contract extension and a raise.

Or is it too early?

3:48 PM
Blogger digger4au said...

Waker and that could change if Tuberville finds a good OC and lets him do his job which I think he will do.

3:51 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Maybe he was talking to ESPN when you called. See what those four letters can do for you?

...or maybe he was pissed at you for trying to rouse him from his beauty sleep at 11pm the other night and hit ignore.

3:51 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I think if Tuberville controls the D and let someone else control the Offense he will be successful at TT, and would have been at USF if he had done the same.

3:57 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Tuberville, who didn't insist on his hiring his own staff, achieved a negotiating coup when he gained a contract clause that guarantees him three weeks off in December for duck hunting.

Take that, Jay Jacobs.

4:07 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Lebo Sr named interim coach. Leads AU to a .500 SEC record, gets named AU coach, hires his son as an ass't.

No, I don't think so, either.

4:07 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I'm for a change ... but announce it late Feb., then crank up the search ... Jay G's right. There's no interim nearby. Fishback has never coached, has he?

4:07 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Freep ...

What that tells me is that he was desperate to coach to hand over the staff. As for Jay Jacobs, he has about as much to do with Tubs' buyout as you did.

I'm happy he's employed, but I'm not optimistic about his success at Tech. Then again, my lack of Tubs love is known in these parts.

4:09 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I thought we weren't going to discuss former AU coaches anymore ;-)

4:10 PM
Blogger CHB said...

no fishback has never coached, but what a great chance for him. The team isn't going to do anything this year. So what could it possibly hurt?

4:21 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

"Probably right now xCTT is on phone with sexton discussing if tossing his name for the USF job would get him a contract extension and a raise. "

I bet the thought has crossed both of their minds.

4:26 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Jet, I seem to recall that Tubs' last renegotiation after the '07 season caused some serious disagreement on the whole 'buyout' thing - as in, Tubs wanted AU on the hook but himself off of it. That may just be unfounded rumor, but it sounds plausible.

The whole 'I won't make any staff demands' promise definitely feels a slap in AU's face.

4:27 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

And I agree, I'm happy for him if it's what he wants. He deserves a tremendous amount of credit for that fantastic 2004 season, no matter what happened before or after that.

But I have my doubts whether he'll ever achieve even the level of success that Leach did at TTU.

Tubs is regarded as a very good coach most everywhere ...except in certain Auburn circles. Lowder and his cronies spread rumors, inuendo and exaggerations for years. Some AU folks eventually fell for it and started believing anything they heard. CEO's understand how to use disinformation. Arthur Blank BS'd the Atlanta folks regarding Petrino in the same way.

Tubs is more suited to a aTm type situation, than in Lubbock. We'll see how this goes. If it doesn't go well, he will probably fade into the sunset.

I'm just constantly amazed that a guy who learned under Dean Smith always has a team that just jacks up random shots and can't hit free throws.

We are generally lousy in fundamentals under Lebo.

In Chattanooga the Mocs just shot 3 after 3 under Lebo as well.

6:30 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Hoopie, I'd be more inclined to believe that the 'rumors, inuendo and exaggerations' were just that, if it weren't for the fact that the same thing happened to Tubs while he was at Ole Miss.

Had a close relative tell me that Tubs was getting the AU job before Bowden had even quit. How did he know? He knew the pilot who flew him to Montgomery to meet with Lowder to talk about it.

As Tubs himself said, "It's a business."

6:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I just read where Arkansas' offensive line coach Mike Summers will be taking a similar position at Kentucky. When is the last time Kentucky swiped a coach from Arkansas?

6:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It is interesting that Tuberville had a better record at Auburn than Leach had at Tech over a similar time frame and scenario. I didn't realize that.

6:48 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- Texas Tech was basically nothing before Leach got there, so the fact that Tubs record was better at Auburn is not surprising at all. Make no doubts about it, Leach was the best coach that Texas Tech ever had. He built the program to where it is. Can Tubs take it any further? We will see. It will be quite an accomplishment if he can win a championship there...I don't think he will.

6:51 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I'd say it's harder to win a conference championship at Texas Tech than it is at Auburn.

However, Tubs could bring some D to that team and that would make a huge difference as they are used to winning shootouts.

6:55 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I imagine Arky is a tough place to be a o line coach, they do things differently then virtually every other program out there. Plus you have to deal with slime ball Petrino.

6:57 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

What Leach did at TTU would be comparable to Dan Mullen winning 85 games in his first 10 years at MSU.

Not impossible, but not terribly likely either.

7:06 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I just wonder who will be hired as TTU's offensive coordinator. That will make or break Tubs there.

7:10 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Freep ...

Tubs had agreed to be Auburn's next coach -- in 1997. He was a good coach who had a couple of great seasons, had an incredible agent, and got very complacent.

It's not an uncommon story in football.

7:11 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Eddie, we were nothing before Tubs got there.

As for Texas Tech, I seriously find it hard to believe that even anyone with a passing knowledge of football would believe they play a tougher schedule than Auburn.

7:12 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Rk- If Tubs was smart, he should try to keep most of the offensive staff intact and gut the defensive staff IMO. I would keep the OC who it was, even though I know Leach was calling the shots, I think the guy who has been with Leach for awhile can pretty much run a pretty good offense similar to what Leach was doing.

7:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

One of the truly fun parts is people that are really uneducated enough to believe Tuberville was complacent. The firing of Borges and hiring of Franklin isn't something a complacent coach would do. It is laughable to say otherwise.

7:13 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- I'm going to pretend you just didn't say that...

No offense, but as bad as we were STEVE, we were in the SEC Championship game just a year before Tubs was named HC. That is an idiotic statement for even you Steve.

7:14 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Uhh, SFC. . .you wanna recant that 'we were nothing before Tubs got there' comment?

7:14 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Ridiculous comment Steve. Auburn went undefeated once already in the 90's before Tubs got there. Auburn is a higher level program now than we were when he got here, but Auburn was definitely on a higher level than Tech.

7:15 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I really don't know enough about the Texas Tech coaching staff to guess at what changes should be made. I do know that they will have a tough time if Tuberville goes back to his conservative offensive ways. College football has changed and I believe Tuberville was attempting to change with it. We will just have to see.

7:15 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Wakerider, we were pathetic when Tuberville got there. Bowden simply was not a recruiter. Without Craig, he would have failed much sooner.

7:16 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- I think you have taken a step back tonight in credibility. Comparing Auburn to Texas Tech...please.

7:17 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yes, we were in the SECCG the year before, mainly because of Craig. But do you remember the 3-8 team? Hello!!! Was anyone around for that season. When is the last time an Auburn team went 3-8? That was pathetic and Bowden's recruiting had a lot to do with it.

7:18 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- We were pathetic Tubs last year too...how do you judge that?

7:18 PM

Eddie, I pointed out that Tuberville had a better record under similar circumstances. If you can't grasp it, I do understand.

7:19 PM

Insert Tuberville with Bowden in your last statement and they both ring about the same.

Look, Leach made Tech what it is. Auburn was way great before Bowden or Tubs got there. Enough of this stupid argument.

Fact: Tubs won exactly 68% of his games in 10 seasons at AU.

Here are AU's overall winning percentages prior to the Tuberville Era, over selected time periods.

10 years (1989-98): 67.7
25 years (1974-98): 67.1
50 years (1949-98): 64.8

Now the same for Texas Tech, where Leach won 66.4 of his games.

10 years (1989-98): 53.9
25 years (1974-98): 51.2
50 years (1949-98): 51.5

Which HC performed significantly higher than his respective school's historic average, Tubs or Leach?

I think the answer's pretty clear.

Eddie, we were bad, but not nearly as bad as the record indicated. Look at the results. Look at how many close games we lost.

Yes, I have said Tuberville made mistakes and it is probably good he left. The environment at Auburn and the fair weather fans made it so. He took a chance in going to a more open offense. He made mistakes in not allowing Franklin to live or die by Franklin's decisions. He meddled and paid for it.

Man, I can't believe we are having this same silly conversation over again. Please read the old blogs and get caught up.

Geeze, can I find a way to blow a hole in that argument? Let me see? Look at the schedules each team play.

No Steve, you just compared what Mike Leach did at Texas Tech to being the same thing Tubs did at Auburn in the context that Auburn was nothing before Tubs got there, because Texas Tech was a bottom feeder before Leach. I think you need to re-read your comments. If i'm so wrong, why is everybody on you about this? Good grief. Implying that Tubs is the greatest coach at Auburn is insane.

7:25 PM

Well, let me see if I can point out a lie here?

Please reference where I said that Tuberville was the greatest coach at Auburn. If not, admit yourself a liar.

Ok Steve, i'm a liar:

Eddie's Comment "Make no doubts about it, Leach was the best coach that Texas Tech ever had. He built the program to where it is."

Steve's reply: "Eddie, we were nothing before Tubs got there."

Yepp, I'm a big fat liar.

Look I liked Tubs, I wasn't necessarily happy when he was fired. I now believe we are better off with Chizik than we would be so it worked out. But in anyway comparing Auburn pre tubs and Texas Tech pre pirate boy is insane.

Auburn was a decent program who had recent success, Texas Tech was a bad program with no history of success.

Funny to hear Auburn fans talking about how history matters. I was talking about when Tuberville arrived. I was not talking about previous seasons. I was talking about the condition of the Auburn football team was in when Tuberville got to Auburn. I am sorry that I must spell it out for you.

7:36 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve...can you even spell?

7:39 PM
Blogger Fearless Freep said...

Sorry, SFC, I think you lost this argument when you said "we were nothing before Tubs got there."

Eddie, you have already admitted yourself a liar, so your opinion no longer matters. And if your tiny brain isn't able to look at my text and determine if I can spell you are not as intelligent as I gave you credit for being.

In 1950 we were 0-10. That would qualify.

Dwayne Reed show really stinks. He takes AU out of any offense they could have. Waller gets one 3 point attempt in the 2nd half. Not sure if F.Sullivan got many shots in the 2nd half. Reed scored but took WAY too many shots. Lebo should bench him.

Steve, are you arguing with yourself now?

7:47 PM

Steve- Comparing Texas Tech Pre Leach to Auburn Pre-Tubs historically is the most ridiculous statement I've ever heard you made, and trust me, that is a long list to be atop of.

7:47 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

1952 would also qualify. We were 2-8 in Shug's second season.

Okay, to spell it out again, I was comparing the Auburn team in the condition is was when Tuberville arrived to the condition of Texas Tech's team when Leach arrived. It was very similar. Try reading it again Eddie.

7:50 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

No Steve, you responded to the comment I made about Leach being the best coach Texas Tech ever had. You go read again. Put your huge waste of space brain to use. I just make do with the tiny one i've got.

Okay Steve, You DO win the argument with yourself. Game over. Let's move on to something else.

SFC, "nothing" would be inheriting a program that hadn't had a 10-win season in 25 years, had only won more than 7 games in a season once in the previous decade, and was on NCAA probation (including scholarship sanctions and multiple forfeits of the few games they had won on the field).

That's what Leach inherited at Texas Tech. You want to compare that to AU when Tuberville took over?

7:54 PM
Blogger IV said...

Do you mean before Tuberville came?
