Gene Chizik speaks

Here we go.

  • Overview on spring: ``The tentative plan ... is to go the first Wednesday after spring break. I'd like to make it a Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule with, if we're ready, a scrimmage day on Saturday."

  • Second time?: ``It's much easier for everybody. There are a lot of variable in there that a year ago we didn't know. Your second go-round is so much easier for everyone -- as you'd expect."

  • On differences between now and a year ago: ``There's nothing new. The difference is that we went to a bowl game this year, so there were some discretionary period we had to adhere to. The class schedule is going to let us practice in the mornings. Other than that, nothing is really different."

  • They are planning to practice in the mornings.

  • On the raises: "It's not about me. It's really important that there was a vote of confidence there in our administration in the importance of continuity in the coaching staff. When you have very talented guys as assistant coaches, a lot of people are going to be interested in hiring them. Also don't forget the huge impact is has on your kids when they don't have to change coaches."

  • More on that: ``It's supply and demand. It starts with the coordinators. People understand the importance of the leaders or your offense and the leaders of the defense -- and the impact they can have on your football team. People are willing to pay that money to get the best people in the trade."

  • "Anytime you don't have change, it's a big deal."

  • ``The patience level out there, when you get paid a lot of money, is shorter."

  • On Aairon Savage and his future position: ``I'm really, really proud to have him back on the football team. I know he can play either/or ... because he's done it."

  • On Zac Etheridge: ``I feel very encouraged about the progress he's made in the past couple months."

  • He isn't expecting anyone to miss spring drills ... including Daren Bates, who had shoulder surgery a few weeks ago.

  • ``We're not going to place any expectations on him that we don't place on everyone else. He's really no different from anyone else. May the best man win."

  • On the situation at tailback: ``Mario is somebody we're looking at. We feel like Eric Smith can do it because he's done it. Those are the guys we're looking at. Dontae is a guy we can more around and do some different things with. He can bring some different options to the table -- a guy in the slot, a guy like Mario last year. Whether he can play tailback or not -- he could be in that mix. We're still feeling him out."

  • On Auburn signing so many high-school QBs with the idea of moving them: ``I like quarterbacks. Sometimes they have a different way of seeing the game -- just because of what they did in high school. When they've done that in high school, they have a great feel for the game."

  • On Gus' salary bump: ``Some guys on our staff were offered, potentially, were off head coach jobs. We did what we needed to do to keep everything together. With some of our guys being sought after, we did what we needed to do."

  • What does potentially offered mean?:``They were interested in them."

  • ``It's been good to have them all year. It's been a great transition of those five (players)."

  • On Roszell Gayden: ``He's working really, really hard to get into the swing of what we do. At the tackle position right now, there will be some young guys we'll potentially try to play out there. You still have Brandon Mosley there. He can do both (tackle and tight end). There are some young guys we may try out there -- like John Sullen. We feel good from left tackle to right guard. That's the spot that's open."

Purely financial analysis .....$1 mil = 22k tickets sold (3k/game). I think increased ticket sales alone would cover the raises.

Then there's the increased concessions, trademark royalties, food, lodging, etc. That come with increased enthusiasm.

Then there's the perception of consistency and commitment by AU to recruiting.

Then there's Alumni/Booster satisfaction.

Since increased ticket sales pay for all of the other benefits, I say that was a good deal.

Interesting that he didn't mention Eddins at tackle.

It also seems he is thinking Zac Etheridge will participate in Spring practice, which would be great.

As for the tailbacks, that is more like what I expected to here. Fannin or Smith should be the favorite to start with Aycock a possibility to see playing time.

JG, philosophically, I think that all sports cost/spend too much and for that reason I don't even follow pro pro sports anymore.

Practically ..in the SEC ..you gotta keep up with the Jones ...and keep them from stealing your folks. I do like the recent trend towards lesser HC salaries and more salary for the Asst's.

These guys Smith and Fanning should be in line for tailback. The young players will have an opprtunity to play if they can learn the plays and show up in spring practice.

I wonder why there was no mention of FAH? I am assuming he will get his carries at tailback, but won't be the go to guy because of his size.

Most all freshmen RBs tend to fumble. Until the RS Fr and Fr prove they can hold onto the ball against SEC defenses, we should go with the proven guys.

Notwithstanding that, Dyer, Aycock ,et all are promising and ..no one knows now, but could be ready to handle the deal.

I hope Savage fully recovers and becomes a shut-down CB. He's been out for 2 years and it is easy to forget his contributions. I think will shake the rust off in spring, have a great final season at AU and then go in an early round of the 2011 pro draft

2:24 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hoopie, I agree with the young tailbacks. You give them a taste of the game by getting them a few carries each game, but let the guys that have been there take the majority of the snaps, at least early. If nothing else, the newcomers must get use to playing in front of 87,000+ fans.

2:25 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Having Savage take McFadden's spot would work nicely. If Zac makes it back, he and Bates can handle safety. Thorpe should be solid at the other corner. Then the question is where we work the others in. Demond will definitely get some playing time.

Mine was a state circuit court. We had the power to investigate if we wanted to, but it was usually just an officer coming in and stating what they had found. Hearsay was OK. The majority of cases had a confession or they were caught red handed. All we had to do was determine if it was reasonable to go to trial.

The hardest was a he said she said abuse case.

Aycock will definitely see some playing time, although I am not certain where. One of the ways to get a young guy involved is to get him involved with special teams. I expect to see a lot of that this season. Many of the recruits will likely be out there on special teams too.

The one thing we really stunk up last season was punt returns and I don't think it was due to the return man. Blocking helps. Last year was as bad as I have seen it on punt returns. In fact, I considered it a reason to cheer if we didn't fumble the punt. Next season should be different.

I think we have a starter by the end of spring practice. According to last year the race was too close to name a starter so basically Neil Caudle=Kodi Burns. Given that, I think it's fair to say Neil Caudle=Kodi Burns<Chris Todd. If Cam Newton isn't any better than Chris Todd then I'm gonna be pretty disappointed.

I'd actually be shocked if a QB isn't named after the spring. I'd also be shocked if one or more of the back ups doesn't transfer to a formerly 1-AA school just to get a chance to start.

If a starter isn't named that probably means Newton didn't catch on as fast as they wanted, because hopefully talent wise there is a gap between him and the others we've already seen.

I would bet all the money in my checking account that Cam will be the starter, but when he'll be named is questionable.

I didn't think the orange jerseys were cool, but I wish AU had a blue helmet, white jersey, blue trousers away game combo with an A on the helmet like the ones on the letterman jackets.

I don't see Newton as being a lock as the starter. I think you may be overestimating the difference in the talent levels here. I do consider him with a better than 50/50 chance of being the starter, but the competition is far from over.

Last season I don't think Malzahn wanted Caudle or Burns as the starter, which is why a decision wasn't made. I don't believe they were tied. I think that is evident because Burns isn't in the race this season at all.

Other than Burns, I wouldn't eliminate anyone from the competition at this point.

If Newton is not named starting Quarterback at the end of spring it will be because he is not what the coaches thought he was. Either he isn't picking up the playbook quick enough or some phase of his game isn't there.
The season will suffer for it.

I'm in the camp of Do Not believe a starter will be named after spring drills - they will want all (or at least the top 2) to work doubly hard over the summer thinking they have a shot to lead the team in 2010.

I Do believe the starter will be known by the inside coaching circle after spring drills - they just want let it out - see above for reason.

If someone is named prior to two-a-days, someone (or a few someones) will be leaving school. I don't think that's a desired outcome.

9:11 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

digger, I disagree. I think we will have a tentative depth chart at QB coming out of spring, but our success does not depend upon Newton.

There was similar hype over Kodi Burns. There were Auburn fans that worshiped Burns and thought it crazy that Cox was starting. It took a while for reality to set in. Cox was the best QB we have had since Jason Campbell. Burns wasn't what some thought he would be.

The same thing can occur with other QBs. Some may end up being better than expect. Some may end up being worse. It is just good we have a lot of options.

I would be surprised if Caudle was the guy, but it could happen. Moseley or Trotter we be less of a surprise, but still a surprise.

Rollison was highly touted. Does he surprise everyone and win the job. With his apparent troubles, it doesn't seem likely, but it could happen.

Someone beating out Newton doesn't necessarily mean he isn't as good as the coaches expected. It could very well be that someone else turns out to be better than expected.

I am still of the opinion that they wouldn't have brought Newton in if they didn't think he was the likely starter, but he will have to prove it on the field.

9:15 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Jay, I find it very likely that someone transfers after a tentative depth chart comes out at the end of the spring. With five QBs, the one listed as 5th will likely head somewhere else, unless it is Caudle. He may be content to just get his degree.

9:18 AM

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that Trotter and Rollison end up the odd men out beyond 2010.

Newton and Moseley, I believe, will stand the test of time.

Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

It's not about talent with Rollison. His doghouse trip didn't seal his fate, but it's indicative of a problem that could ruin his opportunity at Auburn.

Then again, we're talking about 18- and 19-year-old kids. Huge strides in maturity/emotional development can occur almost overnight.

Don't count out Rollison yet. If I was betting on it, though, I'd say Moseley has a better chance.

9:24 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I began tracking Moseley much more closely last fall. I made an off-handed comment to an assistant coach about Moseley being a "forgotten kid" and this coach gave me a five-minute dissertation on how much Malzahn likes Moseley, how arduously Malzahn fought to keep Moseley from leaving and how the kid has legitimate talent.

I don't overlook Moseley anymore.

Jay, you are being quoted, although by someone that seems to be suffering from a cranial/rectal impaction.

Jay, I have gotten the same feeling about Moseley, although some seem to feel Trotter has a legitimate shot. I have seen some good comments about Trotter, but don't picture him as a likely starter. I picture Moseley as a guy that came from a small high school that may have been underestimated. He has good size/speed. Hopefully he will surprise all of us.

That article I linked makes the assumption that because the staff got raises, Auburn is content with 8-5 seasons. It also says we faded after the first 5 games. The guy is frickin hilarious. Yes, we definitely slumpled in the middle of the season, but we played very well near the end, especially considering the depth issues.

Sometimes I read articles and am just cannot believe the author actually believes what he is writing. Now, to say the salary increases might be a bit pre-mature is a valid argument, but to suggest that giving raises means you are happy where you are is just laughable.

9:41 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

I do believe that there will be an open honest battle for the QB job. This staff will give everyone a fair shake. The compitition will be great. But in most of these cases maturity and hard work will win out. Can one of the younger guys step up and take over, yes, but the odds are with Newton.

9:41 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

digger, I do agree with that. Experience means a lot, and Newton has more than most, if not all. Caudle has been around a long time, but has had little playing time and has never had a game where he looked like starting material.

9:43 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

That story opens with this mess: ``According to a report in a recent addition of The Birmingham News ..."

Then I stopped reading. Addition? So the News likes to add numbers?

To deride Auburn's defensive coaches, particularly Roof, based on the 2009 numbers is silly. I am 100% certain that Roof is the right guy for this job and will make his critics eat crow sooner rather than later.

You don't hear me talk about coaches like that very often. I'll say it about Ted Roof.

9:47 AM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

The two coaches I talk with outside the SEC, guys who don't have a direct relationship with Roof, insist he's the best coach on this staff. They've been saying that all along.

Blogger digger4au said...

There are far more highschool super stars that had careers stalled or just dropped out of sight than there are those that went on to stardom.
Why this happens who knows but it does. I guess a lot of times when all the players are big high school stars when they get to college the cream rises to the top and the others drop out.

I have no problem with people thinkng that the pay raises were premature, but to suggest that the raises mean we are happy at 8-5 is just one of the funniest assertions I have read. To each his own, I suppose, but some opinions are seriously off the wall.

I assume the guy also thinks that if his employer gives him a raise that his employer is very satisfied and will never expect him to improve. It is simply bizarre. I don't know if the guy is a Bambi and I half way think he must have been joking with that article. It is hard to believe he actually seriously believed what he typed.

11:08 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't think strange opinion articles are specific to any university. I have read some position by position breakdowns of Auburn that pretty much say we have the bestest players ever at every position. While I would like to believe that, I try to live a little closer to reality.

Good afternoon.

Can anyone define "medocrity" for me? I didn't realize Auburn could reward our coaches for things which don't seem to exist in the dictionary. Perhaps if I aspired to "medocrity" in my profession then I'd also get a raise.

This is why I stick to lurking on this blog, nothing else compares.

1:28 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Usually I try to leave atricles such as that one alone, but it was flawed in so many ways, I couldn't help myself. There are some things that you can argue and some things you can't. Was Todd Auburn's best QB option last season? I believe so. Someone else might think otherwise. Nobody is right or wrong because who knows what the other QBs would have accomplished. It is arguable.

But then there is that article, which is just simply bizarre to me. It is like arguing that the sky is green. You argue back. Then the guy states, well, I wasn't talking about on this planet. You go, okay, and step away from the conversation.

Jay said the following earlier.

"I'm going to write a HABOTN-only piece later today about an Auburn player whose career looks completely stalled ... and where he goes from here.

Anyone want to guess at the identity of the player? I am thinking Caudle or PPL.

I was just as excited about the Roof hire as I was Malzhan. It's amazing what he did last year considering what he had to work with.
