Lattimore on Auburn's pitch

It's obvious that Auburn approached Marcus Lattimore with a structured career plan.

Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn made repeated references to Darren McFadden, whom he coached at Arkansas in 2006.

``I talked to him a lot about it," he said. ``I was going to be McFadden and (Michael Dyer) was going to be Felix Jones. That's how it was going to work."

Who will he be at South Carolina?

``I'll just be Marcus."

And that may only be what he is called after 4 years. Bad career choice football wise. USCe is not known for their tailback tradition.

I'm surprised Spurrier didn't use Emmit Smitheven though he had nothing to do with him.

I congratulate Mr. Lattimore on his decision and really do wish him the best in the future down deep in my heart

Jay, I understand as a journalist, you are always looking for interesting things to ask interesting people. You may use any of the following queries as you see fit :o)

1. "Marcus, whom do you forsee taking over the USCe program after Coach Spurrier is fired at the end of next season?"

2. "When you look at your future 5 years from now, do you think that you'll end up pumping gas for ExxonMobil, Shell or ConocoPhillips?"

3. "What will you do while you sit out the transfer year you'll have to take once you realize what a terrible mistake you've made today?"

4. "You do realize that this ceremony wasn't in any way binding or official, right? There IS still a chance for you to just send the LOI to Auburn tomorrow and save yourself"

All meant with love and in fun, of course! :o)

I do hope things work out for Lattimore at South Carolina. This doesn't kill his chance of going to the NFL, but it likely kills any chance of a Heisman or being a top draft choice. Guys that do that run behind a great offensive line. Take a look at South Carolina's recruiting class. Yes, "rented mule" comes to mind.

My read is that the kid just doesn't want to leave home.

Nothing wrong with that. It takes growning up to do go out onto your own in the world and I understand that it can be very hard to do for some folks.

Still, the tipoff to me was the choice of the venue for the announcement: his church.

Would you really have an annoucement in your church to say you're leaving for some far off place?

Nope, it'd be better to have the "I'm going away to college at.." annoucement at your school. Heck, they'd even give you a special assembly!

FSJ, there isn't anything wrong with that. I like coaches that instill discipline. It isn't so much the hair as it is being an individual versus being a member of a team.

Thanks Hoopie. That is about as I would suspect. The thing to note is how top rated players don't always make the best players.

Yes, recruiting matters, but there are other factors that are as important or morso. Auburn 2008 is a poster child for that.

8:46 PM
Blogger Miller said...

Looks like Jones is a Piggy

8:48 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

What that says to me is to go after the good players, which may or may not be the highest rated. College recruiting is much worse than the NFL draft. There is so much inconsistency in the coverage that difference HS teams get, it lets a lot of great players go unnoticed.

8:49 PM
Blogger BinOBA said...

And there is a difference between a 3 star than went to a nothing school versus a 3 star that went to a big state championship school with many recruits on the team. I trust the ratings on players from bigger schools more. They just get so much more visibility.

College recruiting now a days is all about those camps kids go to. It is a cottage industry.

I actually would take a 3 star kid from a small school over a 3 star kid from a Hoover. It depends on the kid, but usually the big school kid has had all the advantages and may be maxed out on upside becaus his game was so polished.

Auburn has two guys in the class this year that could not afford to/did not have the opportunity to go to camps. (Delanie and Davis). They may end up being the steals of the year.

With that, I bid you good night. I shall not have a 4-fer on the flips today and I'm ok with that. So that leaves it to someone else to...
GET SOME!

Norm, you can do it, just stay with us a little bit longer.

Norm had been a private commitment to HABOTN for fourth flip, but there's a lot of pressure at home.

He finally called Jay G and admitted he wouldn't be honoring his commitment.

Phred - I was only semi-joking. I do blame Stephen Davis' semi-unfulfilled Auburn career on Bowden. However, I doubt it actually had a direct effect on Lattimore's decision. I am guessing his buddies and family members had a little more to do with it.

But anyway... blame Bowden.

I'm trying to decide which hat I should wear.

1. Orange Auburn hat
2. Blue Auburn hat
3. HABOTN hat

Should I call a press conference and a local former Auburn Tiger to help me? Damon Duval might be in town, I'm sure his advice will sway me in the right direction.

Blogger M said...

I am disappointed that Lattimore didn't choose Auburn but he should go to the place where he'll be happy.

Having said that; the whole S. Davis thing doesn't sit quite right with me.

War Eagle and these coaches have still done an amazing job!

To go to Auburn would have meant Lattimore stepping out of his comfort zone. At USCe he could easily go home every weekend. It would be difficult at Auburn. I can't say I blame him. If I remember correctly, his sister goes to USCe too.

Hearing other places that Jones is going to Arkansas.

What the heck is going on?

9:44 PM
Blogger wtc said...

WDE-some say Arky offered his friend a scholly also. He is supposedly shopping his friend with him. Rumor is his friend has a GPA about the same number as sausage biscuit, with a coupon, at the BK.

9:49 PM
Blogger WDEwg said...

I heard the same thing WTC- -and our coaches said, no thanks to putting the friend on grayshirt.

I can rationalize Lattimore (heavy pressure to not let down family); and I guess Jones who probably feels like he owes something to his friend.

But, we can't keep dropping these folks. We need Coleman and Lemonier, and then 2-3 studs/surprises, something to salvage all this momentum we had.

9:54 PM
Blogger WDEwg said...

WTC- any more news out of your mom?

9:55 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

How are you feeling about tomorrow WTC? Still think it will turn out well or do all of the recent developments make you think it will be a let down.

Blogger THT said...

I prefer the Biscutville's sausage biscuit.

Maybe I can leave early enough in the morning to stop and get one. It's probably been about a year.

Looks like all doom & gloom tomorrow ;-)

Blogger WDEwg said...

I'm now starting to hope we get all those that are supposedly ours, and just backfill with some solid performers.

9:58 PM
Blogger wtc said...

My info dried up today. that is either good due to keeping everything under wraps or bad that things are not panning out.
I feel good about Coleman.
I still feel good about Lemonier
Not so much about Jones (at this time) but it could change. maybe we offer the buddy.
We sign Ryan Smith (committed to UK for now)
We let Howard go. I have heard on several occasions he was told he was not signing with AU when he called back to get in good graces.
We have another OL we will probably sign Wednesday. He is under the radar.
I just can't find who the surprise is exactly. A few rumors but I can;t connect the dots.

Anybody ever had a biscuit from Batesville General Store in Clarksville Ga?

I swear to you the best biscuit you will ever have. Its near Lake Burton in the N. GA mountains.

Today reminds me of a Christmas eve (you know the 2nd biggest holiday of the year, next to recuitmas) 2005. I partially tore my acl riding at about 4 or 5 o clock on Christmas eve. I had to be at my grandparents at 7 so no time to go to the E.R. I didn't even have a set of crutches. I hobbled my way around my grandparents all night. It was the worst Christmas eve ever. That Christmas however rocked.

I expect this to be the same kinda thing.

And that my kids is the story of how I met your mother.

No doubt D. Miller.

Both schools will have GREAT classes by the end of the day tomorrow. I don't ever remember both being ranked so high...maybe in the 1984-1985 time period when Perkins and Dye were going at it..

10:15 PM
Blogger wtc said...

FSJ-they are chapped over there because JLee nor BMatthews have posted anything tonight after the Lattimore event. They are wanting all their questions answered and because what ever it is they pay, they think they deserve those guys to be available to them 24/7 these last few days.

I'm surprised Smith didn't get more attention from the in state schools early on.

He had great numbers. What is/was the knock on him?

Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

I wish WDE, my mom's aunt had a lakehouse on Burton when I was growing up. My roommate at Auburn also had a house up near the lake for a while. Both of those houses have been sold unfortunately.

I would kill to live up there. Great lake, better riding near there, and great biscuits. Plus its less than an hour from the Dillard House.

jhag-several GOOD sources have stated to me that until Saturday night Lattimore was texting recruits saying he was going to AU. Even did the week before. Some sources are even reporters not named PM. However, something happened in the Spurrier visit that changed his mind. and he called Monday to say he was not coming to AU.
