Lattimore on Auburn's pitch
It's obvious that Auburn approached Marcus Lattimore with a structured career plan.
Offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn made repeated references to Darren McFadden, whom he coached at Arkansas in 2006.
``I talked to him a lot about it," he said. ``I was going to be McFadden and (Michael Dyer) was going to be Felix Jones. That's how it was going to work."
Who will he be at South Carolina?
``I'll just be Marcus."

WHO?
that is what they will say in 10 years...
Marcus who?
naked korean alert.. anyone watching
nice work , DL, posting first on the HGBOTN
hello mcfly
we are it THT
i guess the other thread is rockin
Homer is thread happy this evening, bringing abundant substance to the Hottie clan.
I think I am gonna start following this recruiting bidness....It is interesting.
Maybe I can start getting info from family members.
your move
Who is the best player to ever play at South Carolina?
Exactly.
Kenny Irons
Rogers?
Soooooo he's just going to be Marcus huh? So waht was the reference last night to Spurrier and Fred Taylor? Whihc was about 10 years ago when he was at Florida not recent reference or substance! Wow!
Sterling Sharpe
Just making a point that you really have to think hard.
Answer- probably George Rodgers. Sydney Rice is doing well so far.
so what is the surprise on NSD for AU...
any guesses??
``I'll just be Marcus."
And that may only be what he is called after 4 years. Bad career choice football wise. USCe is not known for their tailback tradition.
I'm surprised Spurrier didn't use Emmit Smitheven though he had nothing to do with him.
I congratulate Mr. Lattimore on his decision and really do wish him the best in the future down deep in my heart
Jay, I understand as a journalist, you are always looking for interesting things to ask interesting people. You may use any of the following queries as you see fit :o)
1. "Marcus, whom do you forsee taking over the USCe program after Coach Spurrier is fired at the end of next season?"
2. "When you look at your future 5 years from now, do you think that you'll end up pumping gas for ExxonMobil, Shell or ConocoPhillips?"
3. "What will you do while you sit out the transfer year you'll have to take once you realize what a terrible mistake you've made today?"
4. "You do realize that this ceremony wasn't in any way binding or official, right? There IS still a chance for you to just send the LOI to Auburn tomorrow and save yourself"
All meant with love and in fun, of course! :o)
Does anyone reallyean they will enjoy watching said player play at School x when they don't choose your school?
I mean come on. I don't give a rip about a player if he isn't wearing Orange and Blue. Am I the only one?
I honestly cannot name a single player that has ever come out of USCjr and been considered a star...
You will say, George Rogers... but I have no clue who that is... (I know, RB, won the Heisman... a very long time ago)... it was before my time.
Can someone, anyone, name someone from recent history
In order to be a great running back, you have to go to a school thaþ doesn't punt a lot.
DMiller- that's my point sometimes it just doesn't make sense.
I honestly cannot name a single player that has ever come out of USCjr and been considered a star...
Kenny Irons?
:o)
Greg, you have a future in this business!
I am writing at the Sleep Inn in suburban Spartanbug for the next hour. Just being accountable to the HOTTIES.
I blame Terry Bowden. If he had given the ball to Stephen Davis more, he would remember Auburn more fondly, and he would have told Lattimore to go there, and Latt would have listened.
Remember: always blame Terry Bowden.
Is it tomorrow yet? And the other question is: what happens after tomorrow? What are we going to talk about? Basketball? Ppfffftttt.
Michael- very sound logic. I concur.
Former Gamecock standouts include Alex Hawkins, Dan Reeves, Rick Sanford, George Rogers, Sterling Sharpe, Robert Brooks, Duce Staley, John Abraham, Sheldon Brown, Dunta Robinson, and Sidney Rice.
from wiki... that's not an extensive list.
Yeah Jay there is some serious "LOST" business that needs to be tended to tonight... does the sleep inn have HD?
Lost- how appropriate in describing Latts state of mind today :)
"at the Sleep Inn in suburban Spartanbug for the next hour. "
JGT's got a room at the Sleep Inn for an hour. Does wifey know?
Michael. I actually agree with you. It was THE FIRST THING I thought about when Stephen Davis was brought up. I think you are dead on, even though you were joking.
I am writing at the Sleep Inn in suburban Spartanbug for the next hour.
Guess you already got your check cashed after church, huh?
Ron Mexico is back!!! Where you been man?
Ahh yes terry bowden and his insistance on throwing the ball to willie gosha when stephen davis was in the backfield... i remember it well
I count 1 running back drafted out of USCjr in the past 20 years....
So... does Spurrier plan to make Lattimore a WR?
The only thing Terry Bever got right regarding RB's was moving Fred Beasley to FB.
Been doing alot of Habton reading, phred, not much posting... i'm on board for tommorow though
George Rogers?
It would have been Ronnie Brown if we had played them while he was at Auburn.
Maybe Spurrier showed Reggie Bush highlights like Kiffin did at UT.
So how will tomorrow work G? Will you have one thread that you constantly update?
I do hope things work out for Lattimore at South Carolina. This doesn't kill his chance of going to the NFL, but it likely kills any chance of a Heisman or being a top draft choice. Guys that do that run behind a great offensive line. Take a look at South Carolina's recruiting class. Yes, "rented mule" comes to mind.
My read is that the kid just doesn't want to leave home.
Nothing wrong with that. It takes growning up to do go out onto your own in the world and I understand that it can be very hard to do for some folks.
Still, the tipoff to me was the choice of the venue for the announcement: his church.
Would you really have an annoucement in your church to say you're leaving for some far off place?
Nope, it'd be better to have the "I'm going away to college at.." annoucement at your school. Heck, they'd even give you a special assembly!
As some lost person once said:
"Location. Location. Location."
Now to LOST!
The Headland IGA makes a fine pecan pie...
...in case you were wondering.
I make a heckuva chocolate pecan pie...
I don't think Stephen Davis helped matters. In truth, we underutilized Davis while he was at Auburn. He was good, but he was capable of being great.
I think Stephan Davis, was possible a bigger recruit than Marcus.
He was the Gatorade National Player of the Year. I remember the recruiting issue of USA Today had him featured as the biggest pictured recruit on the front page.
and yes FC, it seams he had a better NFL career than at Auburn, not sure why.
If you think we had a bad day, step into Mark Richt's shoes.
Jimmy, because a certain coach that should not be named couldn't use run and ball in the same sentence.
Jeremy Richardson
Davis was the USA Today Player of the Year in 1991. No doubt.
CH=B ... on tomorrow's thread.
I don't know how to handle that just yet. I was thinking one thread with frequent updates, but I'm open to other ideas.
I'm only here at the SLEEP INN to write. I'll be back on the interstate momentarily and headed for Auburn.
Doesn't matter to me one updated Thread will work fine. Have a safe trip back to the Gump.
Jay G ...
How about threads at predetermined intervals?
For example: 9 a.m., Noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m.
That way we know to start looking for a new one. Just a thought.
It's your world, we're just squirrels.
What ever you decide is fine with me. The FAUWG is off to be so I am off to my Lost marathon.
Remember the sooner you go to bed the sooner Recruitmas will get here.
Jay,
FWIW, I vote for the one thread with frequent updates.
Jet, that's a fine idea.
We'll do intervals. I am planning to begin LIVE COVERAGE around 7:30 a.m.
We'll negotiate intervals after that.
I am headed back into the great wide open. I'll talk with you later. Four hours to Auburn ...
They'll be long intervals, though. You'll be able to keep up, FSJ.
How about you scramble the names of the players that commit and we have to figure it out.
By the way, the story of Jeremy Richardson is very sad. I hope the kid makes it.
Safe travels, JGT
Have a safe trip.
JGT 2 things
Chicharrones and Red Bull
ok, I guess I need to go back to my old ways and toss those glasses Cincy sent me aside.
Maybe I won't watch tomorrow at all. We've already got all the commits we're going to get. Lemonier will enroll at FSU with jhag. Coleman will succumb to threats from "those people." Does anybody know if Trovon Reed is even considering AU anymore? Byran Jones, yep, he's a hog.
I see the morons on ITAT are giving Jay G heck for going to S. Carolina today..
I bet they'd be the first ones praising him if Lattimore had committed.
Steve ..it doesn't matter where Da'Rick Rogers goes. If he doesn't serously adjust his attitude, he will crash and burn. CMR was probably done a favor today. All the locals are wondering how he will qualify. You won't see an announcement from his church with half the town showing up.
I don't live in Calhoun, Ga. but my partners do. Their kids play on the team.
Seems weird, FSJ. Was there a bigger story today?
Eddie,
Steve Tanneyhill?
Michael is right, it's Terry Bowden's fault.
RK said the B word!!!
Tanneyhill is the one that Stallings told that he'd have to cut his hair before he'd ever play a down at UA.
I'm almost positive that if you go back and look at the 1994 Iron Bowl stats that Davis got very few carries.
I thought it was crazy then...even more so now.
FSJ, there isn't anything wrong with that. I like coaches that instill discipline. It isn't so much the hair as it is being an individual versus being a member of a team.
By the way, any ball carrier that is dumb enough to have a ton of hair coming out the back of his helmet deserves what happens when someone grabs it. There is no rule against pulling someone down by the hair of their head.
Tanneyhill had one glorious mullett...
http://www.gamecockshop.com/taneyhill-p.jpg
You got to love Simon Cowell. He tells a lady she just killed every cat in town when she hit a high note. Now that's entertainment.
I can remember during the TB years how frustrating it was. Shotgun = pass play. Under center = running play. Man, I hope the other teams never figured that out.
Taneyhill is a successful HSFB coach in SC. As bizarre as the guy was, I sortof expected him to be a sex toy salesman.
Who was the QB that played at USC several years ago that Sports Illustrated did the big story on about how his Dad had "trained" him to be a big time college QB since he was a toddler?
JayG: What is the Sleep Inn? A restaurant? Pub? Hair salon? I'm stumped.
FSJ Here ya go:
April 14, 2009, 7:30 AM
Todd Marinovich: The Man Who Never Was
Twenty years ago, he was guaranteed to be one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game of football. Engineered to be. He was drafted ahead of Brett Favre. Today he's a recovering junkie. This month he was arrested again. Scenes from the chaotic life of a boy never designed to be a man.

Marinovich?
Hoopie and I have great minds and we think alike sometimes.
Sleep Inn is a motel. If you are travelin' and there's not a Starbucks around and you need a wifi......
My ice cream was delicious, the text I got from JGT was less satisfying. But the outcomes of both were expected.
Norm ...actually it's amazing that we would think alike ...especially since you've known Jet for so long.
ice cream... good idea, wake.
That's him Hoopie...
Thanks.
bama got a 4 star OL commit today... looks more and more like WTC is right, Coleman to Auburn.
Hoopie, please don't hold that against me. I'm still a fine and occasionally upstanding individual.
Why don't you two get a room?
You shut up mister man.
Norm ...You've done a fine job overcoming that handicap. Probably entailed moving to Ga.
That Bama OL recruit was out of the blue. hmmmmmm.
Why does Dear Leader only post at the outset? Is he some kind of primadonna despot, or something?
Georgia = Debtor's prison
No he wasn't Hoopie...
We've been on him a while. We'd like to sign one more from what I've read.
We are after Stone, Coleman, and maybe one more.
DL a prima donna despot? Surely you jest.
The leader is always at the front.
The HABOTN has idiosyncracies abounding.
Sorry about that Faker, I musta mis-read.
Yeah...He had narrowed his list to UA, USC (west), & New Mexico for some reason.
Did South Carolina have a winning season while Stephen Davis was at Auburn? Those were the ol Spary Wood's years right?
Marinovich is a good example why you don't go by the hype. Some guys don't have the maturity for the pros. Some don't have it for college. Both college and pro scouts are wrong at times.
Shane from Centerpoint not only spews his lunacy on Finescum ...he writes it on The Capstone Report.
http://capstonereport.com/?p=4900
BTW ...if you ever feel the Bama Hate waning ...spend a few minute on that site ..yikes!!
He is a big kid FSJ. I do not know much about him. Where did New Mexico come from? All I know is he is a 4 star nothing else.
Want more hate?
THT was asking about the REC.
Here's their website:
http://bamaredelephantclub.com/
New Mexico has been on the short list for a number of recruits this year... they haven't landed any of them, but they were mentioned.
By the way, how do you pronounce Arie K's last name? (I can't even spell it, much less say it)
Dusty - curses to you for leading me into the land of al.com. Wow. That place takes idiocy to a whole new level. Cousin humper city. You can almost see the mullets.
THT - I want you to put your big boy pants back on and quit crying. We will finish strong tomorrow. In the top 5 and ahead of the hated ones. Trovon, Coleman and Jones, plus a recruitmas present or two. Watch and see.
wtc,
Your mom hearing any interesting things tonight?
D. Miller..
I have no idea how to pronounce it or spell it, but I read somewhere that his favorite incorrect version is Killmanjaro...

Phreddy... I posted a link to an inspirational story about one of our recruits... I thought it was agood read... I never once told you to venture into the comments section, you should know better. Shame Shame
So did I miss anything while I was out this afternoon?
Steve FC will love this one. It's an article comparing recruiting class rankings to Top25 finishes.
Only somewhat of a direct relationship.
Oops, forgot the link.
http://blog.al.com/solomon/2010/02/many_top-ranked_signing_classe.html
7 of those make good contributions to their teams.... the others are no names
It looks like to me if you want to be a DB in the league USCe can help you get there
that being said, and following D. Miller, I'm not sure how many of those guys are getting substantial playing time at corner
USCe's defense has to be good ... its offense is usually on the sideline.
FSJ...
Chocolate pecan pie?!?
I just found a new favorite 3 words.
Hoopie, out of the top 10 recruiters in your posts 7 of them have played in a title game in that time frame.
I'll take those odds.
yep ehyou...
Good stuff.
Thanks Hoopie. That is about as I would suspect. The thing to note is how top rated players don't always make the best players.
Yes, recruiting matters, but there are other factors that are as important or morso. Auburn 2008 is a poster child for that.
Looks like Jones is a Piggy
What that says to me is to go after the good players, which may or may not be the highest rated. College recruiting is much worse than the NFL draft. There is so much inconsistency in the coverage that difference HS teams get, it lets a lot of great players go unnoticed.
You mean a coach that won't quit on the team Steve?
And there is a difference between a 3 star than went to a nothing school versus a 3 star that went to a big state championship school with many recruits on the team. I trust the ratings on players from bigger schools more. They just get so much more visibility.
Hoopie I think in that time period the top 10 group accounts for 15 conference championships as well. Not that it means anything, but there's that as well
If the recruitmas fairy doesn't put Shon Coleman in my stocking tonight, I am going to be one p.o.'d little boy.
I am not sure what you are talking about, Bin.
Oh, no, you didn't Bin!
Bin is off in lala land again, I suppose.
D.Miller - that's not what I wanted to see. Yes, we have the best class since ~'83, at least on paper. But it sure isn't finishing up so hot.
I would have to review 83, but I believe this class may be better. I don't recall ever having so much talent in so many places in one class.
What time tomorrow will AU start reporting from their fax machine?
College recruiting now a days is all about those camps kids go to. It is a cottage industry.
I actually would take a 3 star kid from a small school over a 3 star kid from a Hoover. It depends on the kid, but usually the big school kid has had all the advantages and may be maxed out on upside becaus his game was so polished.
Auburn has two guys in the class this year that could not afford to/did not have the opportunity to go to camps. (Delanie and Davis). They may end up being the steals of the year.
SteveFL: Thanks for depressing the crap out of me with that Marinovich article. Had no idea what a psycho his father was, or what a druggie young Todd became. Licenses to parent should be mandatory.
No, like ALL things, college recruiting is all about ball bearings.
Who are you talking about, Commie?
actually, I think it was the '84 class with Rocker that was one of AU's best.
I just want to win a hat dance, just once this year.
Being reported that Petrino offered Jones best friend and will get Byran in the deal.
And camps really do have a lot to do with it these days, too. That is why I wonder if a kid like Clint Moseley was simply overlooked. He has the build to be a great QB. I wonder if he is better than the "experts" thought. Some think Trotter is underrated too.
Didn't you post the Esquire article, Tubbs worshiper?
The last time I looked, Arkansas' recruiting class made South Carolina's look great. Hopefully Jones isn't stupid enough to do that.
Didn't who publish what?
I declare stu hat dance winner.
happy?
I'd rather see a hat dance than one of that guy we used to know as "j-z" preferred "pants off dance off" events.
My best friend went to Trevecca Nazarene College. I still went to Auburn. Hopefully, Byran will follow my lead.
nah, we've lost him.
Howdy friends
J-Z, Carmela and Kristina have run off together and have moved to Huntington, W.Va., where the operate a Ukrainian restaurant.
THT - Put those glasses bakck on - right now!
If we don't get Jones, what other DT would we got after? We look pretty solid at DE, but I see only one that might have the size to slide over to DT in this recruiting class. Getting one more DT is my biggest concern with this class at the moment, although big is probably the wrong word. If we got nobody else, we would still have a great class.
By the way, I wouldn't count anyone in or out at this point. Just see what happens. I like that wtc said we will get a surprise and if he was right and I guessed right, we won't be disappointed.
Oh; j-z, Kristina and Carmela, we do miss you. You livened this place up.
Also nice to see was paulmain and his kitten.
With that, I bid you good night. I shall not have a 4-fer on the flips today and I'm ok with that. So that leaves it to someone else to...
GET SOME!
Norm, you can do it, just stay with us a little bit longer.
Norm had been a private commitment to HABOTN for fourth flip, but there's a lot of pressure at home.
He finally called Jay G and admitted he wouldn't be honoring his commitment.
Phred - I was only semi-joking. I do blame Stephen Davis' semi-unfulfilled Auburn career on Bowden. However, I doubt it actually had a direct effect on Lattimore's decision. I am guessing his buddies and family members had a little more to do with it.
But anyway... blame Bowden.
I'm trying to decide which hat I should wear.
1. Orange Auburn hat
2. Blue Auburn hat
3. HABOTN hat
Should I call a press conference and a local former Auburn Tiger to help me? Damon Duval might be in town, I'm sure his advice will sway me in the right direction.
I am disappointed that Lattimore didn't choose Auburn but he should go to the place where he'll be happy.
Having said that; the whole S. Davis thing doesn't sit quite right with me.
War Eagle and these coaches have still done an amazing job!
To go to Auburn would have meant Lattimore stepping out of his comfort zone. At USCe he could easily go home every weekend. It would be difficult at Auburn. I can't say I blame him. If I remember correctly, his sister goes to USCe too.
Santa Chiz can't bring the goodies if I don't go to bed.
Good night.
Goodnight Jet.
Hearing other places that Jones is going to Arkansas.
What the heck is going on?
WDE-some say Arky offered his friend a scholly also. He is supposedly shopping his friend with him. Rumor is his friend has a GPA about the same number as sausage biscuit, with a coupon, at the BK.
I heard the same thing WTC- -and our coaches said, no thanks to putting the friend on grayshirt.
I can rationalize Lattimore (heavy pressure to not let down family); and I guess Jones who probably feels like he owes something to his friend.
But, we can't keep dropping these folks. We need Coleman and Lemonier, and then 2-3 studs/surprises, something to salvage all this momentum we had.
WTC- any more news out of your mom?
How are you feeling about tomorrow WTC? Still think it will turn out well or do all of the recent developments make you think it will be a let down.
I prefer the Biscutville's sausage biscuit.
Maybe I can leave early enough in the morning to stop and get one. It's probably been about a year.
Looks like all doom & gloom tomorrow ;-)
I'm now starting to hope we get all those that are supposedly ours, and just backfill with some solid performers.
My info dried up today. that is either good due to keeping everything under wraps or bad that things are not panning out.
I feel good about Coleman.
I still feel good about Lemonier
Not so much about Jones (at this time) but it could change. maybe we offer the buddy.
We sign Ryan Smith (committed to UK for now)
We let Howard go. I have heard on several occasions he was told he was not signing with AU when he called back to get in good graces.
We have another OL we will probably sign Wednesday. He is under the radar.
I just can't find who the surprise is exactly. A few rumors but I can;t connect the dots.
Ummm. Martin's biscuits in Atlanta. More particularly in Austell. Good eats.
Anybody ever had a biscuit from Batesville General Store in Clarksville Ga?
I swear to you the best biscuit you will ever have. Its near Lake Burton in the N. GA mountains.
Due to highly increased expectations... tomorrow may be a let down for some.
But, it may be jubilation for others.
D.Miller....
Who are "others"?
What's going on at The Bunker?
I've heard some folks over there are very upset with Matthews and Lee for some reason.
Who is Ryan Smith, again?
Those who have kept their emotions in check throughout the 'crootin process...
Not bammers...
WakeRider- -you head up to Lake Burton often, do ya? That place is the cats pajamas.
Just messin with you FSJ.... you guys have a very nice class coming in.
I'd like to have one of your DB's if you'll share.
Ryan Smith - played QB and RB at Cordova HS... Also played a little DB...
Today reminds me of a Christmas eve (you know the 2nd biggest holiday of the year, next to recuitmas) 2005. I partially tore my acl riding at about 4 or 5 o clock on Christmas eve. I had to be at my grandparents at 7 so no time to go to the E.R. I didn't even have a set of crutches. I hobbled my way around my grandparents all night. It was the worst Christmas eve ever. That Christmas however rocked.
I expect this to be the same kinda thing.
And that my kids is the story of how I met your mother.
He led all the fans on saying 85% Lattimore to Au when really it was 50/50 according to the experts
No doubt D. Miller.
Both schools will have GREAT classes by the end of the day tomorrow. I don't ever remember both being ranked so high...maybe in the 1984-1985 time period when Perkins and Dye were going at it..
FSJ-they are chapped over there because JLee nor BMatthews have posted anything tonight after the Lattimore event. They are wanting all their questions answered and because what ever it is they pay, they think they deserve those guys to be available to them 24/7 these last few days.
Hilarious WakeRider.
Let's hope tomorrow is the end of a perfect week.
Jim Nantz killed on that episode.

I'm surprised Smith didn't get more attention from the in state schools early on.
He had great numbers. What is/was the knock on him?
I wish WDE, my mom's aunt had a lakehouse on Burton when I was growing up. My roommate at Auburn also had a house up near the lake for a while. Both of those houses have been sold unfortunately.
I would kill to live up there. Great lake, better riding near there, and great biscuits. Plus its less than an hour from the Dillard House.
http://media.scout.com/media/image/76/760364.jpg
check out this kid, mother of god...probably the #1 Rb in nation for next year if not #1 overall. Natural?
jhag-several GOOD sources have stated to me that until Saturday night Lattimore was texting recruits saying he was going to AU. Even did the week before. Some sources are even reporters not named PM. However, something happened in the Spurrier visit that changed his mind. and he called Monday to say he was not coming to AU.
He did make that episode for sure.
fsj-who is smith kid?
Isn't he the guy from Cordova?
yeah but 85%? cmon
boom?
jhag,
It's no worse than the BOL folks when Shula was being canned. They had THREE different stories up saying Shula was staying, staying with staff changes, & fired within the course of several hours.
Boom
a bammer? noooooooo
