Auburn hires a basketball coach

Hey everyone. It's 100% official -- Tony Barbee is now the head coach at Auburn.

Barbee, who coached under John Calipari at Memphis, ran the show at UTEP this past season and the three before that. The Miners qualified for the NCAA Tournament as an at-large team earlier this month before losing to Butler in the first round.

I had been hearing talk that Barbee was The Top Candidate at DePaul, which seems ripe for a revitalization. Chicago is a haven for prep hoops. Still, Barbee will be coaching on the Plains instead.

He went 82-51 in four seasons at UTEP. His team won 15 of its 16 Conference USA games this year and finished 26-6 overall.

``I’m very excited about the opportunity to join the Auburn Family and proud to be the next head coach at Auburn," Barbee said. ``We have challenges in front of us, but we also have great opportunities with everything Auburn has to offer—a great university, outstanding community, tremendous fan support, and a terrific new arena and practice facility. The time is now to take Auburn basketball to new heights."

BARBEE CAREER TIMELINE

  2. I think this is the best hire among the names I heard. He's young, he's hungry (which should make Jet happy) and he knows how to recruit. Not too shabby.

  3. Good job JayG on confirmation.

I think this is a very good hire per the things you posted.

    Seems like a good hire..

Kudos to wtc for calling this one the other day.

  11. who did he say would get it Jay?

I was going to start my own blog. Call if Hotties Undercover, but that sounded like an adult website, so I passed.

  12. Wow! I didnt even know he had his interview yet. I thought it was later this week.

  13. Came home from work inspired by spring ball and actually cut the yard for the first time in 2010. Now I'm reading that Auburn has actually made a good hire for basketball coach. Excellent info today JGT.

  14. He said it was going to Tubby Smith, book it, done deal, turn out the lights.

  18. I must admit that Jay Jacobs earned my trust after the Chiz hire. He could have hired Tony Bennett as the basketball coach and I would have been like "Give him a chance. Jay probably knows what he's doing."

Barbee sounds like a good hire and a fan fav already.

  27. I know virtually nothing about either coach's ability to coach, but Barbee's yearly records at UTEP are much more impressive than the N. Texas coach's. The latter looked almost like Lebo's record at AU. We didn't need that, again.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Jay4U you need to tell Barbee/AU about that and get a cut from the t-shirts sold to the sorority girls.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Jay, you can come say hello. I really don't care. It's not like there are 15 of us.

    ReplyDelete
  30. did calipari teach him how to "recruit" when they were together?

5-4 AU ahead. UAt still batting. Pitching change for AU.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I expect to see Orange and Blue "I'm a Barbee Girl" t-shirts throughout AU's new arena next season.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jay G, I appreciate that, but my momma would have my hide. She taught me some manners!

Off topic: spent all day Saturday at Six Flags, saw many infidels, but the AU family was out in superior numbers and proudly wearing the colors!

  34. My first response is, whew.

I must admit I was nervous about this hire because of our place in the college basketball world. I've had a complete man crush on Mike Anderson and wanted him to get the job last go around, but it is evident that ship has sailed.

Here's a great article I read on Barbee last night and that is when I put him atop my wishlist.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Come on Scottie B! I can help you distribute them from Opelika. lol

    ReplyDelete
  42. from that link, you can see he definitely knows "coach speak"...

“I love it here and my family loves it here. My intention is to be the head coach at UTEP for as long as they’ll have me,” says Barbee.

Editor's Note: This article was originally published in the March 2008 issue of El Paso Magazine.

  43. I can see it all now... wet t-shirt contests during timeouts, mud wrestling at halftime, jello fights at Toomers after each win... Man we'd usher in a whole new era of AU basketball!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Quote from Barbee:

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to join the Auburn Family and proud to be the next head coach at Auburn,” Barbee said. “We have challenges in front of us, but we also have great opportunities with everything Auburn has to offer—a great university, outstanding community, tremendous fan support, and a terrific new arena and practice facility. The time is now to take Auburn basketball to new heights."

    ReplyDelete
  45. Like that quote.

    Get some.

    ReplyDelete
  46. It's a Barbee!!! Actually, I don't know a lot about him, but from what I read he seemed like one of the better choices.

    ReplyDelete
  47. "tremendous fan support"

was he talking about the football team?

    ReplyDelete
  48. THT LOL! Maybe he was speaking in generalities?

    ReplyDelete
  49. He gets my support if for no other reason than he correctly called us a "Family". No other university has such a fan base. Just my biased opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I do think Jacobs deserves a lot of credit for the Chizik hire. I considered Chizik more of a wait and see hire. Jacobs took a chance and appears to have nailed it.

Barbee seems to be less of a risky hire, but for me he's a wait and see too, simply because I don't know him.

Regardless, I think Jacobs does deserve a lot of credit for making some good decisions.

Also, I love the pictures of the new arena. I have been to some college basketball games and have never seen such a great looking arena.

    ReplyDelete
  51. JayG-Just a thought, but how about an article one day about the hires JJ has made over the past few coaching changes. May be of some interest to some people.

  54. thanks for the baseball updates, Hotties. The game isn't on my TV here in Italy. It's after 3 a.m.. Should I go to bed?

Any chance we can get ECU for the basketball season opener? After all, we did promise Lebo a new arena to coach in.

    ReplyDelete
  55. THT, WSFA.com has it streaming.

    ReplyDelete
  56. THT, the ECU comment is priceless.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I've never understood the criticism that JJ has received from some of the fans from Auburn and outside of Auburn. Finescum bashes him as well. What do fans and Finescum really know about the guy and how he does business. I think WTC has a good idea. Do an article on JJ and his recent hires. I think it would really shed a new light.

    ReplyDelete
  58. thanks, PF. Unfortunately, WSFA's stream is apparently even weaker than my own. Just a blank screen so far.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think JJ is starting to get the respect he deserves from the fans. It looks like he might have had his hands tied in the past.

  69. Thrashers really needed to beat the Bruins last night. I don't think they jump them now with just a handful of games remaining, two of which are against the Caps. SE division continues the one team in the playoff tradition.

    ReplyDelete
  70. If you've got flip4mac installed, .wmv streams will play in Safari. I know this as fact.

  82. Y'all had plenty of SUBSTANÇIO today. We'll live blog Barbee's presser tomorrow around 5 p.m.

Y'all won't be here then -- it's always dead right after Puppet Hour -- but the quotes will be here for you when you get back.

It's closing in on 4 a.m. Time for a few winks.

    Sweet AU dreams, Hotties!!!

    ReplyDelete
  86. errors on Au's part lets UA back in the game.
7-6 going to bottom of 8th.

    ReplyDelete
  87. 7-6 au error at ss cost us a run

    ReplyDelete
  88. Whats up WTC? AU has had a lot of fielding errors under this coach. Hitting improved this year so far, but would really like to see us cut down on errors.

    ReplyDelete
  89. ua walks our lead off hitter, bottom of order. HA! Not a good baseball move. Come on AU, we need to get runs this inning to close it out.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Thought these fielding woes were going away. Better shape up against USC or it won't be close.

    ReplyDelete
  91. SS error was a bone head play. also earlier the right fielder did not come up with a grounder and allowed runners to advance. left fielder made a throwing error in that inning also by throwing home on a grounder. he had no chance to get the runner and the catcher missed the ball and allowed runners to advance.

Au can hit, but they need to clean up the fielding. they are last in the SEC in fielding. That will get them hurt in league play.

    ReplyDelete
  92. The difference between this hire and the football hire is that no one was trying or contemplating hiring Gene Chizik. It was a bold move based on understanding of the comfort of Auburn Family familiarity coupled with a person who outlined a vision for success.

As for Barbee, he could have been in the picture for a half-dozen jobs. This was a bold hire, too, but for a different reason. Jay Jacobs showed he realizes that Auburn basketball didn't need a rebuilding job, but a complete transformation.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Nice sac fly makes it 8-6. Man on third. One out. Bottom of 8th.

Intentional walk puts runners at corners.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Interesting thing going on with USCe athletics. Apparently the only black member of the board of trustees may not be getting re-elected. There is a group requesting that black athletes refuse to play for USCe if the trustee isn't re-elected. Now, that would definitely change the complection of things.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Another base running mistake for AU. run down at third base for the 3rd out. Two bone headed plays at 3rd base this year.

AU 8 UA 6 headed to the 9th.

    ReplyDelete
  96. That's stupid. The black football, basketball, and track athletes are just going to quit?

    ReplyDelete
  97. wtc, our base running last year was abysmal. We make far too many mistakes on base paths and fielding.

errors, walking lead off hitters, etc, get you beat. UA paid for walking our leadoff in this inning.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I hope Paws gets their heads back into it tomorrow. Tonights game is pretty much just for fun. The weekend games are not.

    ReplyDelete
  99. get him. one more strike.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Walk. Hope we don;t regret that one.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Dang. Ahead in the count, too....c'mon Austin.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Didn't count in the record, but a good win for AU.

    ReplyDelete
  103. There we go. Good last inning. Wish the W counted, though. On the other hand, Auburn 2 Bama 0 in Capital City Classic.

    ReplyDelete
  104. AU wins. any win agains UA in any sport is good. AU's three errors make this game way closer than it should have been.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I cut the sound on D. Amos in about the 3rd inning. He kept talking about UAt's strength of schedule will get them into the touney at the end of the season. Maybe they need to win a few games first DA. He is such a tool.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Let's see ...

    1. Spring practice starts.
    2. We hire Barbee
    3. We beat the Cousin Humpers in baseball.

    What a beautiful spring day.

    ReplyDelete
  107. PF, yes, it would be terribly stupid and I am not sure what would be accomplished. The sports teams would stink and suddenly a lot of college kids would be out of school. Someone should have thought that out a bit more before hand, but it was reported on our local news here. Sometimes this racial crap gets to be terribly idiotic.

And honestly, I don't see how anyone that is a college football fan could be racist. God bless all these players. Color hasn't got a thing to do with it. They are all members of the Auburn family.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Y'all are missing the mark on the T-shirt ideas. Here it is, check it:

An orange shirt with a very large blue 'Q' on it followed by the word 'boys'.

As in the Barbee 'Q Boys'.

Oh yeah baby, I am good.

    ReplyDelete
  109. WDE baseball score Alabama 6 Auburn 8

    ReplyDelete
  110. Is AU best team UA has played this year? Seem to remember their schedule pretty easy so far.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Hahaha, Phred, that was terribly bad. Sorry, but I don't think I will be ordering that shirt.

    ReplyDelete
  112. The report I saw said black recruits shouldn't go to USC, not that the players should quit.

    Maybe I read it wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  113. The name Barbee has a lot of options, not all good.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Now, a bunch of hot chicks in Barbee Doll T-Shirts at the games definitely might help attendance.

    ReplyDelete
  115. The student section next year will be Barbee's Barbies. Males will watch while women look like their naturally beautiful Auburn selves.

    ReplyDelete
  116. If Auburn plays clean ball, I think they're a very good team. Playing at home again this weekend should be nice. 5 straigth wins on the road.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I hope Barbee recruits like Calipari, but without the brown bag of cash.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Hotties how about this.....
"Welcome to the New Auburn Area also as the BarBEE Hive"

    ReplyDelete
  119. Maybe so, Wake. I just heard it here on the news. I probably didn't phrase it correctly. They said they were encouraging black kids to not play USCe sports, or something like that. Take it for what it's worth. It is bizarre and wouldn't help USCe, the students, or some trustee that they apparently feel is most suited for the position based upon his skin color, which I find terribly ironic.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Barbee's dolls, the loudest female student section in basketball. wet t shirt contests at halftime. yep, i'd buy season ticks.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Arena = Barbee's Dream House

    ReplyDelete
  122. Mobilz, you have a take on the USC thing they're talking about? I'd like to hear your perspective.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I wish I lived in the Auburn area, because I would definitely want to get behind the new coach at the new arena. One of the pluses of the new arena is the smaller size. It isn't likely to be sold out regularly, but the crowds will look bigger.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Anonymous10:25 PM

A great day to be an Auburn Tiger.

Thanks JGT for all that you do.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Barbee was getting $300k at UTEP. Au is paying $1.5 mil.

    ReplyDelete
  126. That sounds like a competitive salary, and no, I have no problem with them paying a basketball coach that kind of money. Lebo was seriously underpaid.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Barbee was 82-52 at UTEP in 4 years. Lebo had something like 92 wins in 6 years. Maybe it was 99 wins.

    ReplyDelete
  128. WTC. I saw that and almost swallowed my tounge. HOLY COW! Think we left anything on the table there? Helluva day for Barbee though.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I might need to visit Au this week and have a visit with the new bball coach.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Tony's Bologna? Everyone dresses as sausages?

    ReplyDelete
  131. I'm teLling you the Barbee Q Boys shirt is awesome. On the back would be 'Dry Rub'

    ReplyDelete
  132. Barbee's Dolls could be a heckuva recruiting tool.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Lane would be all over that.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I thought it would be more than 1.5.

    ReplyDelete
  135. It is amazing how quickly wikipedia was updated to show Barbee as the Auburn coach.

I like his record in those first 4 seasons. He didn't start off great, but he showed steady improvement.

P.S. I will never get over being older than most Auburn coaches.

    ReplyDelete
  136. PF,
I have not researched the entire USC Issue and i typically stay away from political talk cuz we all have our likes and dislikes...

but i will give you a good answer on tomorrow after i do reseach and can form a educated opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Jay, if Barbee was making $300k, $1.5 Million seems like more than enough. Hopefully Jacobs is using the same strategy he did with the Chiz. Provide a competitive salary, and then give raises when you have some results.

    ReplyDelete
  138. Anonymous10:45 PM

Totally off topic but I saw Katie (one of Larry's daughters) today and she was very thankful for the outpouring of support here on the blog for her family during this time.

Just passing that along to you all.

    ReplyDelete
  139. Barbee Q Boys..... with Butt Rub on the back! moto "come on in the AUburn Arena and get you BUTTS kicked"

    ReplyDelete
  140. Mobilz, I am with you on the political talk thing and I wish they wouldn't attempt to pull college athletes into it. These are kids that should be there primarily to get an education. They shouldn't get roped into it.

    ReplyDelete
  141. Cool Mobilz,

I'm not really interested in the politics of it, that part sounds like a total mess that makes me glad I'm not a SC resident. I was more just curious about the gut reaction of someone with a better perspective than myself on issues like that. Being part of an ethnic/religious minority gives me some sort of idea, but at the end of the day, I'm also a middle class white man in the south, so I lack insight on that sort of thing. I look forward to hearing your response (which doesn't have to be public if you'd like to contact me privately).

    ReplyDelete
  142. I can only imagine what just got deleted.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Anyone know where I can find a video of Urban going Mike Gundy on an Orlando Sentinel reporter today? I'd love to see it. Dude's completely crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  144. pf,
i can respect that, thank you.
here is one thing i always live bye which is part of the Auburn Creed...

"I believe in work hard work.... and nothing is given but earned"

I never pass judgement opinions on a person until i look at it from his/ her perspective.... there is only one truth doing the right thing always wins out....you never know what it is like until you have walked a mile in their shoes or experienced the same as them....

    ReplyDelete
  145. South Carolina is a different experience than Alabama. The laws here are strange. They had the video poker stuff, but only for a short time. There are no helmet laws. In a county next to the one I am in, you can't buy hardly anything on Sunday until after 1:30 on Sunday. No, I am not talking alcohol. I am talking about anything other than a few exceptions like food and gas. Yes, it is illegal to sell toasters on Sunday before 1:30 because, apparently, Jesus didn't believe in selling toasters on Sunday mornings.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Mobilz, trying to see things from someone else's perspective is wise, but very hard to do.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Thanks for the Meyer article, PF. That seems much more overblown than the Gundy thing. It appears the kid used poor wording in describing the difference between Tebow and Brantley. He probably meant to say Brantley was a more traditional style quarterback, but it came out sounding like he didn't think Tebow was a real quarterback.

It would be interesting to see the reporter's article. If it was titled
"Thompson said Tebow wasn't a real QB", I can see why Meyer was pissed and threatening to ban the reporter makes a lot of sense.

I am sure every reporter could take something a kid says and twist it into controversy. It is nice to see Meter squelch it, if that is the case. Without seeing the article, it is hard to tell.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Scottie B... Get a Barbee Doll t-shirt printed up and send to me. I'll get it to my sister at AU. Maybe she can start the fad early.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I had the baseball game covered through Twitter tonight.
I was sitting directly behind homeplate. Ump had a bad night.
There were also about 8 MLB scouts sitting around me.

    ReplyDelete
  150. It would be interesting to hear JGT's take on the whole Meyer deal.

I was just thinking earlier today "FSJ hasn't been around much lately"

Then he has to go off and put that ugliness at the top of our blog. If your going to do that you can just stay away FSJ.

    ReplyDelete
  151. WOW, you start spring football practice, announce a basketball coach, beat bama in baseball and the blog takes off!

Thanks, Jay, for all the great info today. It's great to be an Auburn Tiger!

    ReplyDelete
  152. I am sure Jay has the opportunity to misrepresent the words of a player, but he never seems to try to make a story out of nothing. That is what I love about the HABOTN. You get facts rather than artificially generated drama, such as you get from a certain bald headed radio show host in Birmingham.

I do wish I could see the article that reporter wrote, because it really isn't fair to judge without seeing the article, but I suspect the player was portrayed as saying Tebow wasn't a real QB, when that wasn't what the kid meant.

Kudos to Meyer for standing up for his player.

  153. Time to rise and shine, Hotties.

Great win over the UA-T'losers last night in baseball!!!

    WARRRRRRRRRRR EAGLE!!!

  154. rise and shine everyone. plenty to do today.

    Good baseball win last night.
Good choice in basketball coach yesterday.
I would not be surprised if Person helped land Barbee. Not sure if Chuck wanted the job as he seems to want an NBA job, but maybe he was part of an informal search committee. I have no clue, but it could happen.

  155. Meyer is a lunatic. The kid was given to reporters and said what he said. There was no twisting of words. Several accounts, including video, of the interview backed up the reports. If anything, other news outlets took the line and reported it out of context. It was everywhere. Meyer's hard on for Tebow caused him to go for no reason.

The artidle is online. I'm sure if you wanted to see it, you could find it.

  156. First of all, Urban is a tool.
The reporter neither misquoted, not took the player out of context.

He didn't stand up for his player ... he was protecting the glorious name of the beloved Tebow.

What about AU with the hat trick yesterday!??

Spring practice (check), good hire for bb coach (check), BEAT BAMA (big check!).

It's great to be an AU Tiger!!

  160. Here's the original Tebow Diss story for Lazy Steve. I continue to think Meyer is a lunatic.

  161. On my way into work I realized my grammatical error on my post this morning. It was still early so I'm glad no one called me out.

  162. Has anyone seen any of the current player's or new comers' reactions to the hire?

  163. Morning, Hotties!

  167. Someone earler in the thread was saying the baseball win didn't count. Huh?! Please feel free to educate me.

  168. Meyer went nuts over that article?!?! wow. Looked pretty tame to me. I mean I get the comment, but then again I'm semi-rational.

  169. Is it lunchtime yet?

    ReplyDelete
  170. RK, my prayers are with you, too.

RE Urban: I think he needs to take a deep breath or another vacation.

RE JJ's statement on Tony as a Tiger:
"We could not be happier to have him as the new face of Auburn basketball as we prepare to open a new era in a new arena next season."

I must note that the new face is a handsome one, and that will help with the Barbee dolls.

  171. Just had my mid-morning coffee, so it's not lunch time for me.

JFowler included the statement from the kid and didn't embellish or spin it. It's obvious that the kid meant "traditional" QB when he said "real". The kid described Tebow accurately and the reporter didn't spin it.

.....Sooooooooo what't the problem URBAN? ....someone forgot your instructions to worship at Tebow's feet?

And just for SteveFC ..some irony ... Tebow would probably agree with the WR.

  173. They meant as far as conference standings. It does count in the overall record.

Yes, Coach Barbee is a handsome man with some hair. I'm encouraged because now he can't be accused of rubbing his bald head, when fretting the teams play.

  175. thanks martini.

  176. Praying for WERK's dad.

Good day yesterday for the Auburn Family.

  177. I was a meeting freak yesterday and therefore unHABOTNized. This is terrific news about Barbee - the best we could have hoped for IMO.

  178. ehyou - you're a freak everyday.

  179. And lastly, the men's swimming and diving team will have to wait another day to defend its national title. The 2010 National Championships at Ohio State have been delayed a day because 18 swimmers and one coach were treated for possible gastrointestinal illness. No Auburn athletes were affected. Yup, might want to get that cleared up before anybody gets in a pool. This was from Andy Bitter.

  180. Apologies for asking, what's going on with werk's Dad? If it's not something that needs to be on the blog please email me. Thanks.

  181. I am in disbelief that anyone give "kudos" to Meyer for this latest temper tantrum. The guy needs a psychiatric intervention. I heard the audio, and the reporter simply printed what the kid said; he didn't set him up or "twist his words." It was a poor choice of words, and he probably meant to say "traditional" qb, but reporters aren't (and shouldn't be) in the business of mind reading or misquoting.

    ReplyDelete
  182. I'm fearful that AU's new coach won't recruit some tall players, because then all we'll hear is "Throw another shrimp on the Barbee."

    ReplyDelete
  183. Just stopping in to say I think Barbee is a good hire and to see if I can help with a flip.

    ReplyDelete
  184. Rotten,

    That's funny.

Since this is the year of the Tiger (Chinese calendar), we have Tony the Tiger, and baseball again beat UA in Montgomery, I am feeling good about football. Seems like things are just lining up.
