Cam Newton speaks

Here's what the quarterback had to say about his exit from Florida.

``Of course a lot of people think I got kicked out of Florida. I did not get kicked out of Florida. I transferred from Florida. I had a legal issue, a slip-up with the computer issue that I had bought from a person, which was stolen. That issue was taken care of way before I even left Florida. The charges were dropped and what-not. I left Florida because I felt like the type of player I was, I didn't want to sit behind no one. I have dreams, I have aspirations to be a starter for a Division I NCAA team and I think while I was at Florida, I probably wasn't going to get that. With Tim Tebow at the reigns and John Brantley -- me and him at the same classification -- something was going to have to give."

On taking responsibility surrounding the stolen computer: ``Oh, it's mine. I'm a man. If I did wrong, I'm going to say I did wrong. Knowing what I know now, would I have bought the computer? No. Being a man, you have to take full responsibility for the actions that you do."

  1. ok, not exactly, but what the heck.

  2. Wow, that is certainly different than how I pictured things. I thought he was kicked off the team at Florida. I don't know that I like that he was concerned about the competition with Brantley. He is much more like Tebow than Brantley is, although Brantley is suppose to be great.

  3. Is it too early to start saying War Damn Cam?

  4. I hope an announcer says next year, as Newton runs full speed toward the goal line, "He's running like he's trying to escape with a stolen laptop!"

  5. I have gained a ton of respect for him. If he's not leading this team in the fall, I'll be surprised.

    And I definitely lol'd at Michael's comment.

  6. Maybe we have a play in the playbook which is a designed QB run called "stolen laptop".

  7. Maybe we ought to hire John Belein as our next coach. He has crazy names for his players in hoops ... including my personal favorite... "Best Play Ever."

  8. Maybe he can do some pantomime typing on the football when he scores his first touchdown.

  9. I don't think the Morehead State coach is the guy, but I've seen him coach.

"Demonstrative" would be putting it mildly.

  10. Morehead Coach, part II.

I'd call him, to coin a phrase, "aneurystic."

  11. It is definitely too early to know that Cam is the starter, but it would be pretty shocking if he wasn't.

Neil Caudle is the guy I wonder about since he was highly toughted out of highschool, has done next to nothing in college, and is a senior.

Somehow I think Jay was right when he said Newton and Moseley are the future, but who knows. Some of the other QBs could work their way into the competition. It usually comes down to who makes the fewer mistakes rather than who makes the spectacular plays.

  12. I asked Cam directly about "The Realist"'s claim that the quarterback would miss spring drills with a shoulder injury.

Cam said he injured the AC joint in his throwing shoulder during the JUCO championship game, but that surgery was avoided.

``I'm here; I'm ready to go," he said.

  13. More bs reporting from amateurs.

I'm glad you all come to the real blogs for the real information.

  14. Thanks for the confirmation, Jay. I thought the idea that Newton had the same injury as Todd was bogus, but confirmation is great.

  15. Cam, Cam he's our man
If he can't do it...no one can!!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I heard his shoulder was completely torn from the joint, but Cam has the ability to heal himself

  17. Thanks for the spring substance, Jay.

  18. I have this word of the day feature on a tool bar on my homepage. Today's word is defenestrate, it means to throw out of a window. So,would saying Cam Newton defenestrated the laptop be a proper usage of the word?

If press access continues to be allowed during spring drills, JGT can soon let us know about Cam's arm strength.

Homer ...We come just to hang with you. The real info is dessert.

  21. I think they get to see about the first 30 minutes of practice, but I bet that includes interesting things like stretching excercises.

    ReplyDelete
  22. ...as opposed to interesting things like SteveFC's posts.

  23. I heard Cam had no arms... but look at how he throws the ball.

  24. That is great to hear a player, any player be able to man up to any past indiscretions and be ready to take on the leadership role in the spirit of team play. I do hope that I am reading this correctly from what he had to say. Thanks Jay for another outstanding interview.

  25. Ah, I see the village idiot returned.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree IV. He could have tried to say why it wasn't his fault. It is better to just to admit the mistake and move on. I do like that he seems to be mature. The comments about winning the respect of his teammates is big too.

  27. Seanzie's gonna get pissed when he finds out I'm getting the idiot tag. He clearly said I was the moron and he's the idiot.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I guess I'm reading it differently but to me its not really clear if he is manning up or not. He says he bought a stolen computer, correct me if I'm wrong but he was arrested for theft, not possession of stolen property. He says the charges were dropped, but if I remember correctly he entered a diversion program. Which isn't really the same thing.

Either way its in the past, I hope he learned from the whole ordeal and will be a great QB for the Auburn Tigers.

    ReplyDelete
  29. From what I have read, he did complete some program that caused the charges to be dropped and I do believe he was guilty of buying a stolen laptop. What I find missing here is the part where he tossed the laptop out the window. It would be one thing to say that you didn't realize it was stolen, but tossing it either says you knew it was stolen or that you assumed laptops could fly.

  30. Wake ... you should become a news analyst.

The truth is that Cam's arm was amputated and he now has a bionic one.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Wake,
It's just like an oinker to point out the details.

Ps I agree. At any rate, he's trying to get past it, so whatever.

    ReplyDelete
  32. ....Laptops Could Fly....

Now you have me spitting my beer Steve.

My sense is the Cam/Laptop scandal is somewhere in between the black/white in the gray area. I don't think the whole truth is out there.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It sounds like they are in a hurry to trim the list of QBs, which makes sense. Hopefully we will be down to no more than 3 in a couple of weeks. By the end of spring I am guessing we have a prospective starter and backup named, but they will say it could change in the fall.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Loganville, I agree. I don't think we know the entire story there, but we probably don't need to. The NEW for me in this article was that he wasn't kicked off the Florida team. I am not sure if I read he was kicked off or just implied it from some story.

I hope after this he will just refuse to answer questions regarding it. A been there and done that response should be fine. This horse has been beat enough.

  35. FOOTBALL!!!!

I must admit I drove down Samford today for no other reason than to see the team out on the practice field.

    ReplyDelete
  36. You should have took a picture and shared with us Quitstina.... That's a sight I haven't witnessed in person in 30 years - the Tigers on the field for spring practice.

    ReplyDelete
  37. The changes to the defense mentioned earlier today may be where we learn the most this spring. I expect the defense to be very different.

The thing about spring practice is that it always seems frustrating. We learn a little, but not nearly enough to satisfy that football craving.

I am looking forward to seeing the A Day game, but it will only be a hint of things to come.

You can't stop a team on a mission.

Is your team on a mission?

    Mine is.

  39. Ah, we all know that the secret to Alabama's success of late has been that they no longer have to play Louisiana Monroe.
