Barbee makes his plea to sudents

Hey everyone. Auburn's new basketball coach, Tony Barbee, said he will do what it takes to energize the student body and surrounding community.

He has made the first step. Barbee sent the following email to students today.

Thanks to wellsAU for the tip!

Dear Auburn Students,

As your new head basketball coach, I am thrilled about the opportunity to represent you and this great university at such an exciting time for Auburn basketball. When I accepted this job, I knew there would be challenges, but what struck me the most was the tremendous potential of this program with everything Auburn has to offer. The university, the community and the fan base are all top notch, and the new state-of-the-art Auburn Arena demonstrates a commitment to this program that will help us take Auburn basketball to new heights.

As your head coach, I promise to stay true to the Auburn Creed as I believe in work, hard work. With that said, my staff and I will not be outworked as we bring the Auburn Family what they deserve. I will give my all in every aspect of the job, from recruiting and coaching to promoting the program. I will do everything in my power to produce a winning program and change the culture of Auburn basketball.

I challenge you, the Auburn students, to create a real excitement around Auburn basketball. You are a part of the team, and I need you there at every game to make Auburn Arena the best home court advantage in the SEC.

You are critical to our success, and there has not been a more significant period to turn this program around than now. The administration shares my feelings, as the design of Auburn Arena prioritizes the experience of the students.

The Auburn Arena caters to students in every way and is designed to create an intimidating home court advantage. Very few students throughout the entire nation will enjoy the same amenities that this new arena will present to you. You will have your own private entrance to the arena, concourse area, restrooms and concession stand. As students, you will have the best seats in the building. The student section will surround three sides of the court on the floor level. You will have an effect on the game like never before, and our atmosphere will be contingent on you. With your help, I truly believe we can have a great basketball atmosphere.

I know we can accomplish all of our goals together. I cannot express how excited I am to be your new coach. I look forward to the next few months as we build enthusiasm for next season and beyond.

War Eagle!

I was reading a post about football practice and it was talking about the punt returning drills that have been going on. Yesterday was to catch the ball one handed. Apparently Demond Washington can't catch them one handed so they started calling him little hands like the BK dude. Those commercials crack me up.

Got to love Coach Barbee and his attitude towards Auburn basketball. He is exactly the type of coach Auburn needed to hire. Now here is to hoping he is the real deal.

Barbee won the press conference last week, but some for good reason wondered if he could back it up. I would say so far he has certainly shown that he is going to do his best to walk the walk.

I lsughed out loud when I saw the BC coaching info on the Sportscenter crawl. I could already picture the Hottie comments.

Also, I heard on JOX an hour or so ago that Izzo may not be the leading candidate at Oregon. Instead, it may be Tubby Smith. I wouldn't think that would fire up the Oregon fanbase all that much.

Harrison could field the punts one-handed.

12:39 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Scottie B., same here. In fact, I think the next picture we see of our new coach should be of him surrounded by the "Barbee Dolls". That would be a lot more attractive than the back of PMarsh's head!

12:39 PM
Blogger ehyou said...

Norm, it's not really fair to be compared to Harrison. That's a bar unattainable by most.

12:43 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Harrison could field punts one handed, and blindfolded with Michael telling him where the ball was going.

12:43 PM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Only if Kristina was there to tell Harrison when Michael was kidding.

12:44 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Barbee is saying the right things. Hopefully it will all come together. Large student turnout at the game would definitely make a big difference for the program. I am sure basketball players would love it.

12:46 PM
Blogger mytommyd said...

Or they'd freak out with all the people in the place

12:47 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Add a giant foam finger on one hand and a beer in the other to the blinfolded idea and then Harrison might actually be challenged. Oh yeah, + a full house at JH + punt coverage bearing down + no blockers.

So BC Coaching search...do they go after Bruce Pearl?

UTEP has apparently hired a guy named Tim Floyd to replace Barbee. Supposedly, Floyd had NCAA issues at Southern Cal.

2:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Us not hiring Mike Leach was one of the more brilliant moves Jacobs made. Leach wouldn't have been a good fit at Auburn.

As for TE not practicing, it doesn't seem like a big deal. By the way, it think I am going to change his nickname from Lunchinkitchen to Plutz. It just has a better ring to it.

Now, here is a unique idea. If a coach gets a school put on probation, let the probation follow the coach. Yea, if you hire a coach that just got his school put on probation, you get the probation. Now, that is simply genius. Someone call the NCAA and let them know.

2:16 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Hey LGGByron!

2:17 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

The only problem with probation only following the coach is that Bama (and other cheating-prone institutions) would just hire a revolving door of cheaters, win championships, then fire them when the investigation team comes. The probation would follow the coach and the school would be off scot-free.

For a coach to be paying people, they usually need backing from corrupt boosters and/or administration. The coaches need suspensions from coaching, but the probation and sanctions need to stay with the crooked schools/fanbases.

2:23 PM
Blogger CHB said...

I think it is BS that only the school gets in trouble. In my mind they should receive the least amount of punishment unless they knew what was going on and didn't stop it. The coach, player and boosters should get most of the punishment.

2:39 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

CH=B,

Do you think that the schools don't know what's going on?

2:40 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

FYI: Barbee is busting his butt right now on the recruiting trail. I mean ... Trooper Taylor style.

We'll have to see what goes down when the late signing period begins next month, but I'm predicting some major developments.

3:01 PM

3:03 PM
Blogger CHB said...

PF, In some cases I don't think they know.

3:04 PM

PF are you saying that schools are aware of boosters such as Logan Young and Corky Frost?

Surely you jest..

Just kidding.

3:07 PM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Trooper Style? Trooper wasn't allowed to leave campus for half of last year.

CH=B, If the school doesn't know, they should. Always.

3:07 PM

I disagree, you can't know everything at all times.

I don't care that Taylor got his wrist slapped. I only hope Barbee recruits that well.

3:09 PM
Blogger CHB said...

Now it there is lots of smoke and players driving around in new cars then I think the school should look into it.

3:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

CH=B, I partially agree. I am sure there are institutions that don't know, but more than likely it is because they don't want to know. Any major university should have a compliance department that is payed to know. With people dedicated to it, I don't see how some of the more obvious rule breaking could go unnoticed unless they aren't focused on looking for problems, but rather coming up with answer for the NCAA.

The biggest issue I have with probation is it affects all the athletes, not just the ones involved in the wrong doing. A coach has entire career to recover, but many of these student athletes get 4 seasons, which can be lost due to probation.

3:10 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Harrison - you'll be in charge of keeping him away from the Barbee Dolls.

3:11 PM
Blogger CHB said...

SFC, I agree the compliance departments should be catching some of these things sooner. And you are correct that they probably don't want to, but something can go on that won't get caught. That is until the player or someone else lets it out.

Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

It's the administration's job to know.

Schools getting in trouble with the NCAA are similar to businesses getting in trouble. I once worked for a person that sad if 80% of it works, ship it. For some time he got away with it, but some of the stuff was safety critical. Eventually it came back to haunt him.

I was told weird things like fix it, but don't change anything because we can't afford to go through re-certification. Needless to say, I ignored this and changed everything, but some people have this lets just do what we have to so we cover our own butts.

This is probably similar to what goes on at universities.

If not she is on facebook, so you can rest easy.

I think the movie is better when you know what's coming ... that it's not Oceans Eleven or some other glitzy production.

It's about feeling alienated and lonely despite being surrounded by people. It's a quiet feeling, a solemn feeling. That's why the movie is quiet and solemn.

Football game: Not surprised. Tuberville never spoke ill of Saban or anything. Seems like a great deal for Texas Tech.

Thanks, wakerider.

Yes, we just finished a google chat. Her phone is off because she left the charger in Florence.

I have no idea what movie ya'll are talking about. But I don't do solemn, so I'll probably skip it.

I think you hit on it Jay. The first time I saw the movie, I guess I was expecting a little more glitz.

Steve from Lubbock, why would you hoe in the road? Is that where y'all plant stuff out there?

For the record, I used to travel a good deal with work until September of 2005.

In 2000, I added it up and my company at the time spent over $30,000 in travel on me for the year.

I thought the movie portrayed the "lifestyle" pretty well.

It is certainly for single people with no kids.

wake - when you go to court you'll have to solemnly swear. Or, do you intend to say "I don't do solemn so I'll skip it."?

I don't recall Alabama ever playing a team with a former Auburn coach, even an assistant. It ain't the Iron Bowl, but maybe the Aluminum Bowl or something would fit.

As for business travel, I prefer not. At one point I was flying to Oregon every few months spending a couple of weeks per trip. It isn't a fun way to live, even when they pay for dinner.

Back in the mid 90s I use to fly up to Lexington and visit a company in Floyd Knobs, Indiana. I was basically reviewing their software development. Each trip was two days with a one night stay. That had to be the worst traveling I ever did. I spent more time in the airports than at the company.

Interestingly enough, The Tuscaloosa News is now saying that things aren't as far along as Texas Tech indicated in scheduling a game.

I think it would be a lot more fun if AU played TT in Dallas.

Cincy,
My daughter has been looking for an apartment in Hsv (we live in Madison). She really liked Bridewater Apartments. She'll be a senior at UAH next year and wants to be closer to campus.

Thanks for the link, Kathy. These look really nice. I'm hoping I can slow him down to really look and not just jump at something.

The AT&T tower that the local tree huggers fought for 4 years has finally gone up about 3 miles from our house. That could definitely persuade me to kick VZ to the curb since the one half bar I get at home with VZ isn't likely to change. I can't wait to ask my AT&T neighbors if they have noticed an increase from their usual zero bars.
