Tubby Smith speaks ... sort of

Hey everyone. Minnesota coach Tubby Smith, one of two men on Auburn's initial list of candidates, on Friday dismissed reports that a jump to the Tigers is imminent.

``That's just talk ... because I'm pleased with what we've accomplished here; I'm pleased with where we are in the program," Smith said after the Golden Gophers' loss to Xavier in the NCAA Tournament. ``I'm looking forward to coming back to Minnesota."

Smith is a Southeastern Conference veteran. He spent 10 seasons at Kentucky, where he won a national title in 1997, and two seasons at University of Georgia.

Jay I am greatful for your stance on reporting the facts. Today is just another case in point as to why.
Why does a reporter (cbs guy) report something and then in the same sentence claim "it may be nothing." Why didn't he just say in other words... "I have no clue!"
I just don't see Tubby coming to AU... but then again "it may be something..."

Tubby is a good coach, and could make us a stable team (which is more than we have now). I just wish we could get someone that would excite the AU fans.

To Me:
Getting Tubby would be like us hiring Larry Coker as our football coach.
A decent Coach, who won a championship a year or two after a Big Time Coach, then did nothing.

When AU athletics is in flux ...disinformation abounds. That ol' executive media-technique from the 90's continues to work for the AU AD department.

Think about it. If someone close enough to truly "know" is willing to leak the truth, then their loyalty should be called into question and probably fired. It's not hard to find out who is leaking info. Just feed them fake info and see if it surfaces. I haven't seen anyone "in the know" getting fired.

If we are truly interested in Tubby Smith, then there is no good reason for the AU AD to purposely leak that fact. It would only serve to add tension to the situation and hinder negotiations.

The best way to play the media is to feed them true, harmless inside data most of the time and gain trust. Then when an important issue needs to be "controlled", feed disinformation.

I'll buy Jet's smoke screen theory.

Well, except for the fact that the Big Time Coach that Larry Coker followed has exactly one double-digit winning season and a career winning percentage of just under 57% in 13 years as an HC (college and NFL), and if you consider a perfect 16–0 regular season conference record in 2003 (as well as being named national AP Coach of the Year), five SEC regular season championships (1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005) and five SEC Tournament titles (1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004), with six Sweet Sixteen finishes and four Elite Eight finishes (1998, 1999, 2003, 2005) the equivalent of 'doing nothing', then the comparison makes perfect sense.

Looks like Coach P knows how to get a team going. I think it was a great move to start playing teams like ASU to let these kids learn where they stand and where they want to be. Ofcourse I'm not a huge follower of the baseball team and we very well could have been playing that caliber of team outside the conference for the past several years and I wouldn't know. The only tough part is that it seems like the SEC has 7 or 8 of the top 25 teams in the country this year. It'd be nice to be one of them again.

I also have a feeling we may have the same reaction to our new basketball coach as we have had to the recent baseball and football hires.

Digger, don't feel bad. Most of the time, it's just pure luck and good guesses that brings success in the Tourney. Because, just like in football (and, I guess, most other sports), on any given day, anything can happen. A good team may have a bad day and not-so-good teams have great days. Case in point: how many people picked Ohio to beat G'town??

24 out of 32. That ain't bad for a whole 5 minutes of analysis.

Years ago I followed College Basketball and seriously analyzed the brackets. After witnessing folks win the office pool while not knowing anything other than how the seeding/picking worked, I realized the futility in deep analysis. Our receptionist took great delight reminding us that she beat all of the experts. Listen to all of the sports media "experts" that study this stuff for a living whine about how bad their brackets are doing each year. Heavy knowledge and analysis can absolutely get you into the top 1/3 of every year's pickem'. The variables in a basketball single elimination tourney bracket are too great to allow for reliable predictability.

Baseball and Basketball have much greater chance for a hot streak to dominate one game than football or soccer. The pros have those playoff formats correct.

10:18 AM
Blogger digger4au said...

One and done makes for a lot of upsets. I know alot of this is pure luck and that is one reason that I did not expect to do well. My luck on brackets and parlay cards has always been rotten. So I just don't anticipate doing well. But I still like to play them and watch the results.

I really do not care whether Smith is the coach or not.

But what I am SURE i want is a coach that has a KNOWN rep for winning NCAA games. AU admin have never before gone that route. It is has always been an 'potential' coach, outside of Ellis (who had been burned out and wanted back in).

I agree that the Big Splash could be a great season. I'll take that too.

My only ref to Tubby, was because all of blogs, forums, and radio talk see that AU needs a 'sizzle' hire.

And if the hire is another 'great potential' coach, then forget the great season next year.

He says the relationship between the University of Iowa and UNI is similar to UA-T and UAB (except that they do occasionally meet on the basketball court).

The Hawkeyes absolutely HATE seeing UNI succeed. And the UI grads in the state gummint are trying to hamstring UNI's athletic dept by cutting off funding.

Easy PF. I was just joshin'. I feel like your sometimes on edge too much.

But I'll elaborate on my point a bit further. The point of the NCAA tourney (besides making money) is to find a national champ, right? Do we need to give out more at large bids to teams that very likely do not have a chance of winning it all?

It's great that a nine seed like Northern Iowa beats Kansas, but it's not like they're a bubble team or anything, even if they lost their conference tourney. The lowest seed to ever win the tourney is an 8 (Villanova in 1985). What's the next lowest seed to do it? A four or a five maybe?

I dare say none of these teams that won it all were bubble teams.

Whether expanding to 96 teams or 72 like Jet proposed, is anything but a little more money really coming from it? You argued with me a few weeks ago about the Olympics rewarding the first and second losers too heavily. If the NCAA tourney expands anymore, aren't we just starting to reward mediocrity by letting some of these bubble teams in?

Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Ha. Yep, second losers deserve nothing. I said I wasn't for expanding, just playing devil's advocate to an argument that didn't hold up until it was explained differently.

I'm not on edge, I just wanted to use the words zinging and zingers in the same sentence. I'm misunderstoood. Such is life.

The only fair way is to allow everyone in the tournament. Come to think of it though, that would kind of get rid of the need for the regular season. So, I suppose we get rid of the regular season and change it to one big tournament.

Of course, it might be a bit problematic if it were single elimination.

PF seems to wander around the edge at times, but he is just getting a better view.

No way he's a jumper.

OK, in order to even stay close, my bracket needs the following winners today: Maryland, OSU, Syracuse, Pitt, Duke, WVa, Wisc. Even with that miracle, a couple of folks may have me blocked anyway.

Purdue losing would be a defensive wish.

I picked Kansas to win it all...now I hope all of the games I picked to win are losers so I can finish last.

Auburn Baseball going for their first SEC sweep since 2003, first sweep at UGA since 1998, and first sweep to open up conference play since 1995...Auburn 7 UGA 2 in the top of the 5th.

Grand Slam by Hunter Morris makes it 11-2 in the top of the 6th. 1 out.

McElroy walked on 4 pitched, then has advanced to second and third on consecutive wild pitches. I think Morris's grand slam may have ruined UGA's pitcher's day.

Another walked runner. UGA's coach is just being mean now by keeping his starter in. Let the guy run laps tomorrow or something, but don't leave him in.

Man our boys can flat out hit the ball. I really think this could be a very good season. We just need to get some quality starts from our pitchers.

We've gotten them this weekend. All three get quality starts.

Btw, Hunter Morris's grand slam, the first of his career, apparently hit the top of the wall and bounced over. He'd now in top 10 in school history in ding dongs.

Miller, what do you think about Grant still being in the game? Conventional wisdom on 102 pitches and a 15-3 lead says to pull him.

Let me guess that Georgia won't be spending any time in Hoover this spring.

Well, he got 3 up 3 down on just a few pitches, so I guess it wasn't that big of a deal to leave him in.

I dunno, Jet. They've got talent, but have had a lot of injuries early this season. If they get some guys back and get in a groove, they should be there. This was a team who was pretty close to Omaha last year, and started the season ranked in the top 15.

In the Buffalo Wild Wings commercial with the photographer with the flash grenade attachment ... the guy's team has the ball in a tie game and he wants the game to never end.

What a moron. Doesn't he want to win? Or does he love their mediocre wings that much?

Blogger Miller said...

PF... I say give him the work.
Our starters have had issues getting beyond the 4th inning. The 5th and 6th innings they have struggled.
They need to learn to pitch late into games because, frankly, our bullpen sucks. The starters have to pitch deeper into games to take pressure off the pen.

By the way hubby and I went to early church today and went to Augusta for an early lunch at Sticky Fingers.

We got seated and lo and behold with most of the seats in the restaurant still empty the waitress brings a family and sits them down right next to us.

Country as the day is long...decked out in their crimson garb and tacky tee-shirts, roll tiding all over the place.

Dang...you'd think all the way over here in east Georgia I could get away from the bammers....no such luck!
