Reportage from Sandestin

Hey everyone. So I'm here in the Florida panhandle, where peeps are worried that oil soon will be washing ashore. It's a sad thing.

On a happier note, I have stories to share.

Good news for you: They're written by me!

Bad news: One centers on Alabama.

Still, you're not a bad person for reading about the Crimson Tide's schedule problems and their attempts to reach some kind of accord.

Tide football continues to tackle scheduling issue

Bourbon St is vile and except for the music, should be avoided. NOLA has much more than Bourbon St. There ain't enough good stuff for me to want to live there, but a few days visit enjoying music, restaurants, history and architecture every 10 years is worthy. We spent all day this past Saturday showing the highlights to some friends.

NWGa. is much better than the ATL in my book. I escaped ATL many years ago and now only drive through it to go other places. NW Ga is #2 to me because I live here and have grown to love it. In addition to the great and interesting characters around here, NW Ga is geographically convenient and geologically interesting. Cartersville is at the southern end of the Cartersville Fault, which separates the Blue Ridge from the Ridge and Valley. The Piedmont region starts immediately south of here. Yep ..I'm a geology geek.

  5. I like Bourbon St., though I don't drink.

    Watching drunk people is fun.

  6. Yeah, good luck in the Group of Death, Dear Leader.

  7. I'm a bad person because I'm a bad person.

  9. Reading about the tide makes me feel dirty. Yuck.

(Unless I'm reading about sanctions, that would be cool)

  10. He weighed approximately the same as a duck, so we burned him anyway.

  11. Jay, thanks for the story about the tyde's challenging schedule. I still don't understand why playing GA State the week before Auburn gives them the wibbie-jibbies. Apparently, it does, though, since that is the game they are considering moving.

One of my favorite NOLA memories was the February after Katrina, the last weekend in carnival season. We went to spend some money and spend some time with friends who were having a really hard time. On Sunday we went to Cafe du Monde for breakfast, then church at the cathedral, then walked to Antoine's for brunch, then walked to Canal Street to watch a parade. It was a beautiful day. Other than the woman shouting obscenities at the parade, everybody was nice and friendlier than usual.

  13. Very small rocks?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Lead...and styrofoam poop coolers.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I went to some of the Rickwood Classic yesterday...fun, but HOT!

    ReplyDelete
  16. Can we get instant replay on the HABOTN? I think some good Americans may have lost perfect 1st posts to the DPR in the past.

    ReplyDelete
  17. "Very small rocks" is the answer I was looking for. After consulting with the judges and reviewing the tapes, I'll also accept Poop, Lead and styrofoam poop-coolers.

  18. Hoopie, if you want some good live music in NOLA, head to Frenchman St. around 11pm-12am. Definitely a weirddddd crowd, but some kick ass music.

  19. Okay so the teams they are playing that have the open date are:
USCe (has Auburn 2 weeks before)
Ole Miss (Has UK 2 weeks before)
UT (Has UGA 2 weeks before)
LSU (has Auburn 2 weeks before)
Miss State (has UK 2 weeks before)
Georgia State (plays Lamar? 2 weeks before)
Auburn (Has UGA 2 weeks before)

I must say its an interesting pattern

Yeah, I'm not sure if I feel bad that the returning BSC champ has to do that. I'm not sure that an extra week is going to be an advantage or disadvantage.

  20. Strange picture. It looks like the sun going down or coming up in the distance ye looking at the end of the buildigs on the right it looks like sun shining on them.
    Optcal concussion?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Wells, good call on Frenchmen St. Been there many times.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I guess I'll get used to Ride of the Valkyries going through my head for the next while.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Kill the Rabbit!

With that, I'm off for a quick lunch of fine hospital cafeteria food followed by another infernal con-call.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm not a huge fan of replay in general, but the one they have for the tennis majors is extremely cool.

  25. A good group of my friends and I would go that way sometimes in high school. Last time I was back home for New Years we wandered over there, some jazz group was still playing around 3am. Absolutely incredible sound, I couldn't stop dancing.

  26. So, Auburn vs Clemson will be carried by ESPN at 6PM CST on Sept. 18th. Night game...check.

  27. Navy Nightmare!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. The walmartians are just a bunch of crybabies. I like Chizick's answer when asked about bye weeks.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm not in favor of reply for every instance in baseball. If it is a critical moment of the game then they should be able to look at it. Maybe you give the coaches one challenge per game or something.

    ReplyDelete
  30. double shifts at the BuyMore aren't fun. But at least I'll get to have a Sutton Drug Store bacon cheeseburger, fries, and diet cherry coke tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Leave Mississippi State Cowbells alone!!! I mean, their standium seats what, a couple of hundred people. Is it really louder than other stadiums in the SEC?

As for instant replay, I am only for it to evaluate the reaction to bad calls. Bad calls are a part of the game and should remain.

    ReplyDelete
  32. if you're at the BuyMore don't forget about the jumbo tub of cheese balls THT!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. oh, and a Cherry Coke would hit the spot right now. i'm still hungry. ggrrr.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I disagree that "bad calls are a part of the game". They happen but they shouldn't impact the game. Sports are about the players and the plays made on the field. Refs/Umps are there to insure they play by the rules.

It's no secret that I'm old school, but I would be happy with a set of laser scanners to call balls and strikes.

Tom Glavine's entire pitching success was built on whether the ump would give him the strike for the ball falling out of the strike zone. I was an ATL fan, but always felt the the umps gave him too much plate.

  36. Bad calls will always exist. They actually provide a service many don't realize. They provide an excuse for one team losing, so that way both teams can go home feeling like winners. Now, who wants to get rid of something that makes everyone feel like winners? We need more bad calls.

  37. Sometimes when I am feeling bored, I like to take the time to re-read some of the reactions to the Chizik hire. It somehow makes me feel all warm and toasty inside.

  38. Steve- Get a life man. You have way too much free time if you are doing that. Get out and get some air, go for a walk, but digging up that is just sick on your part.

  39. Joker really is one. I hope he wins the East. UK is officially my favorite football team in the East Division.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Anonymous12:20 PM

I love Joker's "I guess we all look alike" comment.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree, Joker seems to be one funny dude.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Eddie and Steve...rivals eternal.

    ReplyDelete
  43. There is no digging to it. I have the links saved and love reading some of the comments. My favorite is "Drug test Jay Jacobs now".

    ReplyDelete
  44. And I dream of the day when Josh Moon interviews the guy that was screaming at Jacobs at the airport. Now that's journalism.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The athletic department is actually doing a promotion for the Clemson game called "True Blue".

Naturally, you're supposed to wear green to the game.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wells- And have the leprechaun do pushups for each point scored.

    ReplyDelete
  47. They're always after me lucky charms!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I sure hope that they're going to finally find out how much of a serial killer Joran van der Sloot really is, and then do something about it.

The French quarter(sans Bourbon St.) in NOLA is great. Everything except the strip/porn places on Bourbon St is replicated somewhere else in the French Quarter. The Garden District takes some effort to get to know your way around, but has great stuff with out tourists.

At 2 pm on Sat. afternoon we were walking down Bourbon St and passed a strip bar. A "girl" pops out of the door wearing only a thong/pasties and tries to drag an accompanying 17 year old kid into the club. The kid loved it, but his mother was mortified. I tried to warn her this sort of thing could happen, but they wanted to experience Bourbon St. The dad secretly thought it was cool.

    ReplyDelete
  50. tommyd, did you hear about his apparent "suicide" the other day?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I'll be wearing blue to the Clemson game and every other game, as always.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anonymous12:41 PM

Van Der Sloot is slippery, but I'm thinkin' that legal rights aren't high on the Paraguayan priority list.

They should be able to get him.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Anonymous12:43 PM

I'm with ya THT. It's always/only Big Blue for me.

SFC ...I think the interview you propose may have found a good use for Moon's abilities.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Like Yoda said, "Good or bad calls there are none, only calls".

    ReplyDelete
  55. THT- I try to do the same. I've always thought it looked better.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Oh no! I have killed the rabbit. What have I done?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I thought dude was in Chile, not Paraguay. Haven't been paying that close of attention, though.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Fox News reports van der Sloot is in custody in Chile.

    ReplyDelete
  59. North wind bwow, south wind bwow, huwwicane, SMOG!

    ReplyDelete
  60. so... just wondering... is the lack of movement to the new thread a Moon protest thing, or just a we-didn't-know-it-was-upz thing?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Here is an article on van der sloot getting arrested.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Lowcountry - maybe a little of both. I went, I read, and now, in protest, I return here.
