Reportage from Sandestin

Hey everyone. So I'm here in the Florida panhandle, where peeps are worried that oil soon will be washing ashore. It's a sad thing.

On a happier note, I have stories to share.

Good news for you: They're written by me!

Bad news: One centers on Alabama.

Still, you're not a bad person for reading about the Crimson Tide's schedule problems and their attempts to reach some kind of accord.

Tide football continues to tackle scheduling issue

Bourbon St is vile and except for the music, should be avoided. NOLA has much more than Bourbon St. There ain't enough good stuff for me to want to live there, but a few days visit enjoying music, restaurants, history and architecture every 10 years is worthy. We spent all day this past Saturday showing the highlights to some friends.

NWGa. is much better than the ATL in my book. I escaped ATL many years ago and now only drive through it to go other places. NW Ga is #2 to me because I live here and have grown to love it. In addition to the great and interesting characters around here, NW Ga is geographically convenient and geologically interesting. Cartersville is at the southern end of the Cartersville Fault, which separates the Blue Ridge from the Ridge and Valley. The Piedmont region starts immediately south of here. Yep ..I'm a geology geek.

Jay, thanks for the story about the tyde's challenging schedule. I still don't understand why playing GA State the week before Auburn gives them the wibbie-jibbies. Apparently, it does, though, since that is the game they are considering moving.

One of my favorite NOLA memories was the February after Katrina, the last weekend in carnival season. We went to spend some money and spend some time with friends who were having a really hard time. On Sunday we went to Cafe du Monde for breakfast, then church at the cathedral, then walked to Antoine's for brunch, then walked to Canal Street to watch a parade. It was a beautiful day. Other than the woman shouting obscenities at the parade, everybody was nice and friendlier than usual.

Can we get instant replay on the HABOTN? I think some good Americans may have lost perfect 1st posts to the DPR in the past.

"Very small rocks" is the answer I was looking for. After consulting with the judges and reviewing the tapes, I'll also accept Poop, Lead and styrofoam poop-coolers.

Hoopie, if you want some good live music in NOLA, head to Frenchman St. around 11pm-12am. Definitely a weirddddd crowd, but some kick ass music.

Blogger mytommyd said...

Okay so the teams they are playing that have the open date are:
USCe (has Auburn 2 weeks before)
Ole Miss (Has UK 2 weeks before)
UT (Has UGA 2 weeks before)
LSU (has Auburn 2 weeks before)
Miss State (has UK 2 weeks before)
Georgia State (plays Lamar? 2 weeks before)
Auburn (Has UGA 2 weeks before)

I must say its an interesting pattern

Yeah, I'm not sure if I feel bad that the returning BSC champ has to do that. I'm not sure that an extra week is going to be an advantage or disadvantage.

A good group of my friends and I would go that way sometimes in high school. Last time I was back home for New Years we wandered over there, some jazz group was still playing around 3am. Absolutely incredible sound, I couldn't stop dancing.

I'm not in favor of reply for every instance in baseball. If it is a critical moment of the game then they should be able to look at it. Maybe you give the coaches one challenge per game or something.

double shifts at the BuyMore aren't fun. But at least I'll get to have a Sutton Drug Store bacon cheeseburger, fries, and diet cherry coke tomorrow.

Leave Mississippi State Cowbells alone!!! I mean, their standium seats what, a couple of hundred people. Is it really louder than other stadiums in the SEC?

As for instant replay, I am only for it to evaluate the reaction to bad calls. Bad calls are a part of the game and should remain.

11:54 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

11:58 AM
Blogger CHB said...

I disagree that "bad calls are a part of the game". They happen but they shouldn't impact the game. Sports are about the players and the plays made on the field. Refs/Umps are there to insure they play by the rules.

It's no secret that I'm old school, but I would be happy with a set of laser scanners to call balls and strikes.

Tom Glavine's entire pitching success was built on whether the ump would give him the strike for the ball falling out of the strike zone. I was an ATL fan, but always felt the the umps gave him too much plate.

Bad calls will always exist. They actually provide a service many don't realize. They provide an excuse for one team losing, so that way both teams can go home feeling like winners. Now, who wants to get rid of something that makes everyone feel like winners? We need more bad calls.

Sometimes when I am feeling bored, I like to take the time to re-read some of the reactions to the Chizik hire. It somehow makes me feel all warm and toasty inside.

The French quarter(sans Bourbon St.) in NOLA is great. Everything except the strip/porn places on Bourbon St is replicated somewhere else in the French Quarter. The Garden District takes some effort to get to know your way around, but has great stuff with out tourists.

At 2 pm on Sat. afternoon we were walking down Bourbon St and passed a strip bar. A "girl" pops out of the door wearing only a thong/pasties and tries to drag an accompanying 17 year old kid into the club. The kid loved it, but his mother was mortified. I tried to warn her this sort of thing could happen, but they wanted to experience Bourbon St. The dad secretly thought it was cool.

They should be able to get him.
