The Five I'm Watching: Part VI (BONUS)

Hey everyone. So I couldn't whittle down the list to just five players without cutting Lee Ziemba, so he becomes the BONUS sixth player to watch.

Please enjoy your weekend ... and this fine piece of prose.

LEE ZIEMBA
Left tackle
  • Age: 21
  • Class: Senior (one season of eligibility remaining)
  • Size: 6-8, approximately 320 pounds
  • Previous roles: Starting left tackle
  • Theme song: ``Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," Eric Clapton (many people have performed it)
  • Relevant lyric: "When you finally get back up on your feet again, everybody wants to be your old long-lost friend."

THE GOOD: Ziemba is exactly what an NFL scout seeks in a left tackle. He's tall. He's big without being fat. He has relatively quick feet. Years of repetition have given him a strong base of fundamentals. Coaches always have praised his awareness. Ziemba has missed a total of zero games during his three-year career, which demonstrates an ability to play through injury. He is an outstanding run blocker. Ziemba often is overpowering in running situations. He was raised in an Auburn home -- his father is a graduate -- and I've always gotten the sense that he really is playing for the school. It's a difficult thing to quantify, sure, but I can sense it nonetheless.

THE BAD: He is penalized too often for someone of his experience and aptitude. Though his problem isn't as bad as some say, Ziemba has been flagged more more than his fair share of drive-stalling holds and false starts. He said in April that it's a concentration thing -- and something that has become a point of emphasis this offseason. Ziemba used to lean when guarding against the outside pass rush, which led to a rash of missed blocks in 2008, though he seemed to trust his lateral quickness more in 2009. He's probably a little above average as a pass blocker right now. That's a big improvement. It's rare that you see Auburn ask him to pull on a sweep or screen pass.

THE REALITY: He is Auburn's most reliable offensive player and one that cannot be replaced. The Tigers don't have anyone who can step in and play at Ziemba's level. I expect penalty prevalence to fall within the normal range this season. I also expect his pass-block skills to sharpen because of experience, which will make him a first- or second-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He's an undervalued part of the Tigers' enterprise right now.

What do you think? Speak your mind!

I like Ziemba. He just looks like a football player. And I agree with AUEE13, people knock him now, but they will surely miss him when he is gone.

Very good choice, Jay. Ziemba plays the hardest position on the offensive line and has been pretty darn solid. Plus I think he holds the record for number of heads ripped off defensive linemen.

I know I give Ziemba a ton of grief, but there is no doubt when he's on, he's one of the best offensive linemen we've had at Auburn.

He arrives early to the party sometimes, but he's always stays to the end as well.

Apparently, THT posted before the thread has been posted ... that's a penalty for false state.

Having said that, Ziemba is the most valuable player we've got.

Ziemba will be a 1st round pick after this year.

I didn't get to comment on the FAH thread, but if we get 900yds and 12 TDs out of him then we will have a HoaY (Hell of a Year).

Off to the Zoo.

I don't know about 900 yards out of FAH. You have to figure the carries will be divided between him, Fannin, and Dyer. I don't think there is any way Dyer redshirts.

Supposedly we got a commitment today from Sammy Coats. He reportedly ran a 4.31 today. I don't know much about him, but others say his recruitment is really going to heat up over the next couple of months. We may also be on the verge of stealing Danny Woodson from the turds.

7:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It seems we stole Coats from Southern Miss. I wonder if the people that use to bash Tuberville for getting recruits like that will also bash Chizik.

8:26 PM
Blogger Jet said...

STeve ... if they turn out to be marginal players and if it becomes a pattern, then, yep.

8:29 PM

Many of Tubervilles became great players, so I don't get it.

8:35 PM
Blogger wtc said...

Coates is a 6'3' wide receiver with blazing speed.
AU maybe letting Woodson go his own way now. AU will take maybe 2-3 wideouts this year.
Steve- I agree with Jet, if they don't pan out, we will jump on him like we did Tubbs.

8:41 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Just enjoying the hypocrisy. Why jump on him only if they are bad, when you jump on Tuberville when they are good. Got to love the Bammersque values.

8:47 PM
Blogger Baldy said...

Ziemba looks like Bam Margera from "Jacka$$" fame. Ziemba has handled adversity well during his stay at AU.

8:52 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

From what I have seen I get the impression Ziemba is a pretty level headed kid. I've never really seen him look upset.

8:54 PM
Blogger CHB said...

Well SFC it is still early in the process and his recruitment will certainty heat up with his size and speed. He performed very well at the camp today and in the end you can say we stole him from many others.

WTC, Richardson and now Coats makes 2 so who is the 3rd?

9:01 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

What is his 40 time? He looked very fast in the video I saw, but looks like he needs to beef up a bit.

This recruiting season is a lot different than last season. The coaches have a little more flexibility to go after the best players rather than just filling needs. It is amazing how much a difference last years class has made. I still can't believe they got virtually the entire class in school. Lately we have been lucky to get two thirds in.

9:04 PM
Blogger CHB said...

He was clocked at 4.3something today. That is without pads though. His video looks good. He seems to play fast and has long arms. He also posted at 37"vertical today. I think he could be a good one.

AU will take Morrow or a kid from Miami named Tacio

9:12 PM
Blogger wtc said...

What hypocrisy are you talking about?

9:13 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

With that kind of speed, it leaves plenty of room for him to bulk up a bit. It is nice to see the coaches grab a kid when they see the talent.

9:16 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Mr. Coates looks very impressive. I'm going to have great AU dreams tonight of him doing a Frank Sanders number on Jabriel Washington in 2012.

11:37 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

coates was apparently injured in camp last year and never got back to full speed. thus the usm offer and commit. i read where some scouts at the camp today said get ready for his recruitment to blow up. i don't see this as one like tubs used to get at the end to fill a spot with a longshot player. too many people seem to think he's the real deal for that to be the case, i think.

11:41 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

pay sites say AU could have a commit from a hoover wr around monday when he makes a return visit with mom. AU's offer today was his first.

You never really no with recruits. We have had plenty 2 and 3 star recruits turn into good players, so stars don't bother me. Also, if you look back at the five stars we have signed, they haven't lived up to their billing.

With any recruit, regardless of the stars, you just have to wait and see how he handles college. I think McNeil has been out highest rated DB recruit until recently, but the guy hasn't been an impact player. You just never can tell.

I am hoping that the large number or recruits that actually made it to Auburn is due to the kind of players that Chizik is getting. George H. W. Bush said it, character matters.

without reading the e18 story, i will surmise that only one AU commit is in the top 10. a 140# kid from some private school that runs a 5.4 is probably #18 just to keep an AU commit off the list. i'm just going on randy bammer jock sniffer kennedy's m.o. he is really in control of the list no matter what name is on it.

10:07 AM
Blogger CHB said...

Actually Chip Auburn commits and those we lead for are are well represented. When it's all said and done we will have 3 of the top 5.

WTC, back to the WR discussion. What about Chris Frost? I think we have a great shot at getting him and I think we are recruiting him as a WR.

10:15 AM
Blogger chip chip said...

now i have read it. they managed to add sammie coates to the end of the "others" list before press time. AU could conceivably end up with 7-10 signees from this list. but it is a down year in AL according to bammers.

i have to say, chizco's recruiting efforts continue to dwarf what AU got from bbq inc in the final few years.

10:16 AM
Blogger chip chip said...

everything i've read about frost is that AU just wants him. if he can punt they want him. he has the ATH tag.

So why do so many fans complain about Ziemba's penalties? I think it is because those mistakes are easy for the casual fan to recognize. I guess the other reason for some much complaining is that those penalties are ready-made cheapshot fodder and some fans can't resist the easy opportunity to pile on. Think about it ....taking cynical shots at your best player just because you found an easy target. The validity of the complaint magnitude doesn't matter ..it's all about posting that cute comment. Too me that smacks of attention hound.

Ziemba is our best player, yet heavily criticized. I'll quit criticizing the cheapshot artists when they start criticizing offenders and their actions that are a true net negative to AU. Of course for those "artists" to do that will probably require investing time in film study instead of writing cute quips.

11:39 AM

If there is a 7th thing Jay G should add to his watch list is the play of the special teams. That's one area where we probably can't help but improve.

11:49 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I want our kickoffs to get across the goal line. Is that too much to ask? Matt Clark (kicking from the 35) flew the back of the end zone with his kicks.

12:00 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

RK, I agree. Special teams has to improve, especially the punt returns. I have never seen our punt returns that bad.

Kickoff coverage will hopefully improve also. It wasn't great. We haven't looked good in kick coverage sense they moved the kickoff to the 35.

These things just make the performance of our offense last season even more amazing, although there is certainly room for improvement.

We must just take joy in the improvement from 2008 to 2009. During 2008, I always got the feeling our offense having the ball was a bad thing because something bad was going to happen.

12:16 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Another thing with special teams is can we have a kicker be consistently good for consecutive years?

It seems that has been a lot to ask over the past decade or so.

12:26 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm hoping that the lack of depth was the overriding factor to our poor special teams in 2009. We probably can't go from very bad to great in one off season, so I'll be very happy with anything that is better than average.

1:51 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I like the idea about going for the best athletes, which you can do when you don't have the numbers problems like we had last season. These athletes are basically players that could be successful in a variety of roles. That, to me, is a huge plus. Also, I get the sense that Malzahn loves players that can do multiple things.

1:56 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

i've never had a problem with ol getting penalties. that is just part of the game. i think why Z gets so much heat is the timing of his has tended to jump out. they turn 3rd & 2 into 3rd & 7 or sometimes he has had two false starts in a row. no ol penalty ever helps a drive. his have just been particularly painful for some reason. we all know how good and important he is, so i guess many fans tend to hold him to a higher standard. rightly or wrongly...

2:04 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

in Z's defense, he was injured in 2008 and was admittedly trying to overcompensate for the decreased mobility and being underweight @ 280 thanks to the direction of a coach who will remain unnamed. that is when most of the silliest of his penalty problems occurred. not much went right for anyone in 2008.

2:08 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Brian McCann wakes the Braves bats up with a grand slam.

2:12 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

I don't think Z was comfortable with the changes in 2008, and I can understand why. What I think CTF was going for was an offense similar to what Mike Leach ran at Texas Tech. The philosophy there was significantly different with the wide line splits. What we ended up with was a mish mash of philosophies which caused problems. You can't really blame Ziemba from having issues in that situation. We saw in the media where one coach said something that contradicted another coach. Imagine being a player and trying to deal with that. Regardless of what the page is, everyone has to be on the same one.

Pitching has been pretty good so far. I'm not sure about Tommy Hansen at this point because he's been drilled in 3 of his last 4 starts.

Oh, Kathy, I am so sorry. I know how you feel. When our golden, Molly, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, it was terrible. We loved her so much and saying good bye was awful. But now, 3 years later, I only think of how wonderful it was to have her as part of our family.

I will be praying for comfort for all of you.

Thanks for the welcome. No comment on the whole BC thing

Kathy, I know it is way too soon to think about this, but I am going to plant a seed. When you get ready for another golden, let me know. Kathryn gets some awesome goldens through the rescue in Nashville. Many who are through the puppy stage, already neutered, house trained. They are wonderful and desperately need a new family.

Thanks for the kind words and prayers. It will be a long time before I can get another doggie.

Sorry to hear about your pet's problems, Kathy. I know about pets. My dog Scooby is my constant companion and usually provides the most conversation I get in a day.

I haven't seen the movie Shutter Island but I read the book. I don't see how you guys figured out the ending after 15 min when you don't know the ending for sure after it's over.

8:07 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

ehyou- I think the ending was pretty clear. I didn't guess his decision, but guessed his role.

Steve- Doesn't look to be an Auburn show this year, instead look to be doing an SEC Show.

8:12 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

An SEC show would be pretty good, but I doubt my comments would fit in there.

I may have to go back to my alternative method for seeking fame, namely making prank Mel Gibson phone calls.

The last book I read hasn't been made into a movie, but I highly recommend it.

Welcome Flock.

THT - Hot Wife, F4* and I left the house headed for an ice cream store followed by a neighborhood walk after getting home.

Jet - I'll pass tonight, but I'll more than make up for it during the week.

Kathy - our Golden will be 11 this year. Worst puppy I've ever owned but without a doubt, the best dog I've ever owned. And there have been many. She's like a family member. If she can't travel with us or the in-laws can't take her, we don't go. Her world was rocked when F4* came into it 3.5 years ago but she adjusted fairly well. Point being, I think they're the best dogs ever and can't imagine how you and yours are feeling. Keep doing what you're doing.

8:16 PM
Blogger Norm said...

Didn't read Shutter Island but we saw it a few weeks ago. It was good, but I did figure out the crux of the situation fairly early on. Much like I did with The Sixth Sense. Of course, I'm incredibly brilliant so don't be ashamed if you can't say you figured them out too.

8:20 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

I think golden retrievers adjust better than dachschunds. Molly never did adjust real well to us having children... and we had the children at least 5 years before we had Molly. That dog owned us.

I have the absolute best dog in the world and he is a chow/sheppard mix. Think of a 110# Chow Chow with hiar like a chow, but Sheppard markings. Sounds scary.

This dog loves everyone. Well, everyone unless you are a cat or squirrel.

Thanks for the link to the summer workout article, THT. It sounds like everything is going great.

I have loved the news coming out of Auburn ever since ChizCo took over. Previously you could tell by some comments that there was discontent on the team. You just don't see that now.

I read about the ND incident, although I don't consider it real serious. If they were drunk behind the wheel, it would be a different matter. It just sounds like some kids got caught doing what college kids will do. It isn't right, but it isn't drunk driving either.

Sorry to hear about your dog Kathy. It's tough to let one go.

Cincy, I might be interested in hearing more about your daughter's rescue dogs. My current dog has become depressed recently and I think it's loneliness. We had to put our other dog down a few months ago.

SFC, I have a German Shepard/ Chow mix. Great dog, but a little neurotic at times. She is fairly small though. She only weighs about 40lbs. She too hates bammers. She hates one of my long time friends and I think it is because she can smell the bammer in him.

I think Shutter Island was fairly easy to figure out. Now all the intricacies were not easy. I also think one could pretty much assume what the ending scene meant.

Did anyone see The Book of Eli? Well I don't want to ask what I was about to in case someone who wants to see it hasn't. If you have seen it you probably can figure out what I was going to ask.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

wow, I hadn't read this about how dirty Pete Carroll & USCw was.

11:11 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

The NCAA investigation of UNC is spreading to USCe. Supposedly there were players that had improper dealings with sports agents.

11:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Thanks THT. I hadn't seen that one. Apparently the NCAA is wanting to flex it's muscles a bit after spanking USCw.

11:33 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Good lord. I didn't realize Carroll was so dirty. Until the article THT linked, I thought he was just kind of looking the other way. This makes me think he must have known what was going on. USCw got what they deserved. Actually, they may have got off a little easy if there is more to this.

11:40 PM
Blogger chip chip said...

i remember quotes from carroll back in 2003-4 when he boasted about all the agents and celebs that were frequenting the sidelines of practice and the athletic facilities. talk about inviting the fox into the hen house... he has tried to maintain the strategy of plausible deniability but his legacy is crap now even though he has a few mncs. i believe the midget and universitah across the state operates under the same premise, 1000 mph toward winning until you crash and then deny everything. the system is apparently back to operating as it did under stallings and dumbose.

k, sorry to hear about the dog. our cat of 13 years was hit by a car 5 minutes after we got back from the beach 7/5. he had diabetes and was senile as hell. we now have 2 new cats that my kids picked out from the shelter.

sfc, your dog sounds a lot like mine. sheppard/collie mix here. i figure just hook a sheppard up with another dog and you'll probably get a winner.

slime attracts slime

the similarities of both universities and the speed at which their star coaches accomplished their remarkable turnarounds has to make one wonder.
i cannot help but wish to hear what they said behind closed doors. pete probably told him to have is finger on the eject button at the first sign of trouble. recently, $aban own us to the way he handled leaving the fins. an olive branch for the next nfl payday.

i bet i could out coach both of them put together. as long as i could pay my players more than them.

Blogger chip chip said...

and my apologies to hoop for the rampant speculation.

i've read quotes where moderators from uscw pay sites are saying they have heard of an ongoing ncaa investigation that makes uscw look tame. and it is not unc. the quotes are also on a pay site so i can't linky you guys. stay tuned...

Cincy, Jones hasn't completely dropped Auburn, but it is unlikely that he will sign with us. Most people believe there are a lot of people close to him pushing him away from Auburn. It sounds similar to Region (without all of the weird stuff). We will be ok though. We are after (and will get) some really good DBs.
