Yes, it's that time again

THT has alerted me to the fact you all are approaching 5,000 posts, which means it's time for a new thread. It would be my pleasure to create said new thread. Before I leave, however, I'd like to provide you a picture of the always-lovely Mariska Hargitay.
Have a nice day.

if I look at it cross-eyed, it plainly says "Paul is dead."

Too many good vibes for AU from various national "experts". This season is ruined.

My 36 year streak of not getting stung by wasps sadly came to an end last night. Not used to taking Benadryl so early in the evening. So it goes.

2209 - Huge 200th anniversary party for Cam Newton signing with Auburn.

no offense, but the more I read about an upcoming stellar season, the further my confidence sinks. I'm ready for this season to be over so we can have an unexpectedly awesome season next year. I hope Bruce can put back to back stellar seasons together, preferably the latter without as many injuries.

2213 - The Battle of Midway's extravagant halftime show ends prematurely in an all-out brawl. War is resumed while networks are still on commercial break.

Hi Jimmy!

Don't worry, since we don't play this weekend, Gus isn't going to start practices until next Wednesday.

Only 27 days until the Kings first two pre-season matches against the Coyotes. I found that on the internet.

michael, I figured it out. I will have a plane fly with a big "I'm sorry I offended michael" banner over JHS at our next home game. The pilot will also drop a "Dig here" sign into the NW endzone corner.

2219 - the cold weather continues, much to the delight of bubbs's descendants.

I can't wait to accept this public apology!

Also can't wait for my PREDS to take to the ice again.

Do we really need to practice to hit a .500 season? I'm not sure we should bother.

I agree with THT. Let's just forfeit this year and move on to next.

2221 - Everything is staying frozen. Hockey is now a year around sport. GO PREDS!

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

ya know, the last time we beat a ranked team to start the season, we went undefeated and won the national championship. And neither the UGA or ua-t games were in Auburn that year, either.
So, it's obvious we're either going to be 5-7 or 15-0.

2222 - number 2 is everywhere, not just on the streets of San Francisco

Hey, I like the idea of MLS becoming relevant. I don't know the names of anyone on Atlanta's team, but I think it's really cool that their games are so popular.

2226 - Over 500 years after Ponce de Leon's supposed search, the fountain of youth is finally discovered. He wasn't even close. Turns out, it's the wheelchair accessible fountain outside the gym of the Ider Elementary School.

Blogger bubbs said...

We might be okay at LB this year, but having McBryde miss the season hurts us for next. That's a year of solid experience he'll be missing out on. He was in line to be a starter next year. Oh well. Guess we'll just have to see how it plays out.

API thinks the Aussie was a scam and a fake all along. Jet thinks we're just bringing him along. Not throwing him right into the deep end with game one. I believe MJT has installed him as one of his ministers of Eurasia, but I don't know which one. I wouldn't ask him about it either.

2041 - Auburn wins the Zergoball national championship!!!!

9:54 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

And I have no confidence in our O line. What I been saying all off season. There just isn't enough experience there. What do we have, like, 30 collective starts or something? That's not good.

2042 - No one has aged since 2040 for lack of birthday candles.

10:10 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

our experienced o-line last year gave up a zillion sacks. Maybe the inexperience is just what we need?

2043 - Auburn's Zergoball team plays exhibition match against the NFL champion Bergen Bears. (football is what Norway and the rest of the world call American Zergoball)

11:15 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

I'm with THT. Especially after the last two games of the 2017 season, I'm more concerned with whether our O-line is good or not instead of how much experience it has.

2244 - Everybody wonders what happened the previous five years.

Wow! What an amazing campfire last night. We had double the number of attendees that I expected. I hope AU football can similarly exceed my expectations.
Wake Forest won in OT last night with a scrawny little true freshman QB who will put up amazing numbers if he doesn't get broken into little pieces.

I predict it won't be 3-2. Otherwise, I have absolutely no idea what's going to happen. I just hope we can stay healthy.

2251 - Critical shortage of extra-long test tubes due to high dachshund demand.

I'm sleepy to. I fell asleep a couple of times when I was sitting with a guy who was explaining me how to do some things on the computer. Nodding off in a meeting is one thing, but nodding off during a one-on-one talk is pretty harsh. Hopefully he didn't notice.

2254 - the crew from the Philadelphia Experiment suddenly appear on stage during "America's Got Talent," completely unchanged from their 1940s selves, except now they can dance really good. They win the competition.

Blogger bubbs said...

Well. Our OLine was much better in pass protect than I had hoped. I'm not entirely sure why the run game wasn't as effective as we'd like. WA does have a pretty good run defense. But, at times, it looked like the stage was too big for Kam. Boobie will probably be starting before long.

I really hope LSU just ran up against a way over hyped Miami. I don't need them to be good right now. Later in the season, sure, but not right now.

2256 - Dinosaur leather is all the rage.

8:32 AM
Blogger michael said...

20 carries for Boobie and 10 for Kam seems about right to me.

2257 - dinosaur leather is now laughably out of fashion

10:11 AM
Blogger E-Bro said...

LSU looked like they normally do to me. Good running game, good defense, and average QB.

I think it'll be a tough game we can easily lose, but not necessarily any tougher than it usually is against them.

2257 - WE LANDED ON THE MOON!

10:12 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

That Seth Williams fellow looked pretty good. LSU looked scary good. I hope we can look that good in two weeks. I think either RB could keep our 1,000 yd streak intact, but only if OL play improves. I hope we get to see more Shaun and an introduction to Asa this weekend.

2259 - We find dinosaurs on the moon. LIVE ONES!

10:35 AM

I realized yesterday that a good friend from high school scheduled his wedding during the LSU game.

Over the years, I can recall missing only two highly anticipated Auburn games because of a wedding. The first was 2006 UGA, and the second was 2012 Clemson.

So yall might want to go ahead and skip the LSU game. Probably won't be pretty.

2260 - dinosaurs learn to talk

11:10 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Thankfully, this years LSU game is not highly anticipated, right?

Great news! Those two "walnut" trees in W-S are actually pecan trees! Can't wait for MrsTHT to make me some pecan pie this Fall.

2261 - Dinosaurs hack CIA servers.

11:27 AM

Hey, given what followed, that 2012 Auburn-Clemson game was something of a moral victory.

2262 - CIA drone strike takes out the dinosaurs.

1:06 PM

I'd rather have a season full of immorality than "moral victories" like 2012 vs Clemson.

2263 - CIA hq devastaed by hybrid prion-proton beam rays from the dinosaurs. Turns out, the only thing taken out in 2262 were the dinosaur holograms.

1:20 PM
Blogger E-Bro said...

You know, MJT, there's a simple fix to this possible upcoming LSU mess that you would definitely be responsible for.

Don't go to the wedding. Boom. Problem solved. Auburn wins and everyone goes home happy and we don't hold you to (rightfully) blame for Auburn losing.

2264 - CIA hq re-established off the coast of Costa Rica.

1:43 PM
Blogger bubbs said...

I'm liking this weather as it's perfect for the fall garden I just put in. I'll take a warm drizzle all day.

Yeah, I don't understand the problem, MJT. Your "friend" surely knows he uninvited all true AU fans by planning the wedding on that day.

2265 - Dinosaur leather is outlawed by dinosaur overlords.

9:11 AM
Blogger michael said...

what'd ya plant in your fall garden, bubbs?

i ain't doing a fall garden this year. gonna get all the organic matter out and till the thing in a futile effort to get rid of the fungus that infects everything.

2266 - Dinosaur TV is finally back!

9:59 AM
Blogger bubbs said...

Pretty much just assorted greens (turnip, mustard, spinach) and pumpkins.

I've heard when you get something like that in the soil it's near impossible to fix it. Have you done any reading on other methods? Burning the soil? Herbicide?

2267 - TGIF comes back to Dinosaur TV!

3:02 PM
Blogger michael said...

Imma try some bacterial solutions that supposedly attacks fungus (activonate and serenade are options), but my main plan is to cover up the soil after planting to keep the dirt from splashing up on the leaves when it rains. I will probably put some permeable covering on it and pin it down here and there. Haven't exactly landed on the strategy. Another option is plastic mulch, but that would be annoying for various reasons.

Another option is to cover it with a black tarp and let it bake for a year, but I don't really have another spot I can garden in.

Problem is I think there is fungus all throughout the neighborhood. Lots of trees and bushes look pretty funky to me. I might be doomed.

2268 - Lemon Law 2268 fails to recapture the magic

HUUUUUUUGE game this Saturday on the Plains. I'm guessing I will have lost power by then. Wonder how far I'll have to drive to find it on TV. If this path doesn't change, we're going to have some pretty nasty weather.

2274 - Hurricanes are eliminated by giant clockwise fans installed in the atmosphere.

I know you've probably already told us this, but what games do you plan attending this year, THT? This would have been a good one to go to.

2275 - Clockwise hurricanes hammer the east coast.

We have too much on our plate in NC this Fall, so we sold all of our tickets. MrsTHT and I are going to see if we can survive without going to a game.

We had no power the first half of the 2010 SECCG. Drove a mile to Truett Cathey's grandson's house and knocked on their door and watched it there. I had never met them but MrsTHT had briefly met the wife about a year earlier. I remember being barefoot... didn't have time for shoes. spent all day yesterday putting out bazillion bales of pine straw. Doesn't make much sense with a hurricane coming, does it? Well, I sure wasn't going to try and do it after it got all wet and MrsTHT wanted it done for a luncheon she's hosting next Wed. Maybe we'll get enough rain before the wind carries it off to our neighbors yards. I'll certainly be entitled to loot them if they take our pine straw.

2281 - civilization stops recording history. No one knows what happens afterwards.

7:00 AM
Blogger michael said...

I guess the hurricane might veer a little further south of you according to the current projection. Chance of pine-straw-remaining-in-place has risen from 5% to 45%.

Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Hey Hotties! Just got back from W-S where it was sunny and warm. It's warm here, too, but cloudy and blustery. Not Piglet-flying-blustery yet, but enough wind to partially abate the heat and humidity. Poor ol' New Bern is already flooding and the rain hasn't even picked up there, yet. Our pine straw is just fine today. We'll see how it does tomorrow late into Saturday.

I guess I should have stayed in W-S for the football game. I'll have to get the campfire started shortly. They moved the BC @ WF kickoff up to 5:30pm EDT. I'm looking forward to a lively discussion of the BC coaching situation.

2284 - Pause in the Battle of Midway so everyone can tune into the next BC coaching situation press conference.

3:34 PM

We are out of harm's way. The worst that will happen to us is power outage leading to a very flooded basement and then mildew and mold. Well, I guess that's the second worst. Losing all that freshly distributed pine straw would be an epic catastrophe. MrsTHT and I have business in W-S tomorrow so the drive home tomorrow afternoon might be a bit interesting. I'm hoping the European model will come to fruition, with only 3 or 4" of rain instead of the 10" we could get based on other models. If we can keep power, we can handle either amount. Gov giving a presser right now with signing lady next to him. Her facial expressions are very entertaining. I'd swear she has twice as many facial muscles as most humans.

I had to watch the game on my laptop. The stupid local CBS and ABC stations have been carrying 24/7 Florence since Thursday night. That gets old after about 3 minutes and 14 seconds. I'd swear the CBS station must have rented reporters. They must have more than 20 scattered all over the state. And guess what? The rain looks the same everywhere.

For Christmas, I'm going to ask for a DB coach who will teach DBs not to pull, tug, and grab every WR.

Greetings, Hotties. I went the long way to prison to avoid a road that frequently floods. Didn't help. Ended up driving through about 100 yards of flooded road to get here. Everyone, including a high clearance van turned around. A little Corolla from the other direction foolishly drove through and made it, so I figured I could make it. My biggest fear is that it will get worse during the day and I'll be stuck here.

On the issue of the divide between the offense and defense, I don't think we should have that yet. I mean the offense did score the go-ahead touchdown against LSU late in the 4th . I think we'll get Kodi going against Vandy and he'll carry us to 9-1 into the final games against UGA and UA.

Our only other win that year was against TN-Martin. Poor ol' Anonymous probably thinks we're going to run the table this year.

Well, I'm not Anonymous, and I sure as shooting don't think we're going to win the rest of our games. Did I make a win total prediction for this year?

Frankly, it's not unthinkable for us to end up being a pretty good team with a 7-5 record.

7-5 or 6-6, which is what I think we were predicting back in July. Until we can run the ball when the other team knows we're going to run the ball, we aren't going to be able to beat any elite teams.

michael, you are welcome to all of our snakes that aren't a solid jet black.
Last night, different snake, slightly smaller, probably same species but the markings were slightly scarier looking, more diamondy. Definitely not a copperhead, thank goodness. Probably another brown snake. I did Google about non-rattler snake tail wagging, just to be sure.

Sabres A team beat the Penguins D team 3-2 last night. Pens were already down 2-0 when I got cleaned up from yd work and sat down to a full plate of melt-in-your-mouth country style steak with mashed taters & gravy and an obligatory green vegetable.

Perhaps I've mentioned the super cool facebook group my wife an I joined a few years ago titled "Snake Identification."

https://www.facebook.com/groups/22137638452/

People post a picture of a snake they've found, and experts tell them what the snake is. After being in the group for awhile, we are pretty darn good at identifying snakes.

anyway, it's always funny when a friend ours says, "we killed a copperhead/water moccasin," and I would say 90% of the time, the snake is neither. Just happened yesterday with a coworker of mine. Dude was like "check out this copperhead," and I looked at the picture, and I was like "cool." It was clearly a water snake. I almost didn't tell him, but I just couldn't keep it in. Of course, he didn't really believe me. He was like, "OK, sure, like you know anything." Rather than telling him I am a Facebook Expert I just let him go on thinking he had heroically killed a copperhead.

But seriously, errybody thinks everything is venomous. Except for THT. That guy is sensible when it come to snake identification.

2318 - Aliens, having an irrational debilitating fear of copperheads, leave the earth.

Blogger bubbs said...

Yeah, I totally think most people have no clue how to identify snakes. And I probably belong in that category.

2319 - Copperheads win the SEC west.

1:18 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

we probably see as many copperheads as all other snakes combined, so that's always my first concern. Neither of the snakes I saw recently had a "pit viper head" and neither had markings of a copperhead. Our neighbor got bit by a venomous snake on the sidewalk while walking his dog in July. His leg was a mess for several weeks. It was nearly dark, plus he was messing with his cell phone and the snake didn't stick around long enough for him to get a good look at it.

Non-venomous snake bites hurt, too. I learned that when I tried to pick up a black racer at summer camp when I was 13. Fortunately, no one was around and I was too embarrassed to tell anyone. I expect that snake to file a complaint any day now.

I think the football team is awful. Perhaps not 2008 awful, but maybe 2009 awful. Beat one respectable non-conference opponent in the season and the dregs of the conference, but unable to win against the "big boys" of the conference. Until we can do what we want to do on offense when we want to do it (yes, I'm looking at 3 and 1 or 4th and 1), we won't be able to compete with the elite.

THT - I'd say the main difference between now and '08 is that we have a truly elite D this year, not just a good one. The '08 D looked elite a couple of times early, but we eventually learned that was more of the opponents' offenses just being completely terrible.

I remember the 2012 defense looking decent until about game 4. That's when they figured out the team wasn't going anywhere, and gave up. That's the problem with having a really good D and terrible O. It's okay to have it the other way around, but not in the combo we have now. We start dropping games, and the wheels will come off.

Frankly, I'd be pretty happy going into uga game. That would mean we'd finish 9-3 and have a decent bowl game. Finish 2nd or 3rd in the West. I consider that over achieving for this squad.

I'm still kind of stunned by the offensive deterioration these last couple of games.

Certainly, there were signs of struggle on that side of the ball in the games against UW and LSU, but there were undoubted points of promise as well against two good defenses. The three touchdown drives against LSU were more or less works of art in play calling and execution, as were the first and fourth quarters against UW (the first first down of the game-winning driving notwithstanding).

It'd be one thing if we stagnated against Arky and Southern Miss, but we've seemingly gotten worse against lesser opposition.

1:18 PM

not to mention we're about to play a strong defense using backups in our O-line. The starters haven't been very good, so I wouldn't be entirely shocked if we have our worst offensive output of the year to this point.

Steve from Grand Bay asks about shorter passes to open things up: "We've got a good idea right now through five games of where we're at, and I know Chip and the offensive staff."

I remember thinking, why don't we max protect so we can throw it deep. I saw waaaay too many "shorter passes" and attributed it to our abbreviated pass protection.

At least tomorrow night I can turn to hockey if I feel my heart being shredded and extracted.

A long day of yard work followed by bad football and bad hockey. I was asleep by 8:30 pm EDT.

I wish we could cancel the remainder of the college football season. It holds no interest for me. At. All.

Am I going to have to become a dedicated Hurricanes fan this season? I think bubbs is going to win the HABOTN office pool this year. It's in the bag!

This would have been one of the games we would have attended if we hadn't sold our tickets. Would have made for a fun drive on Friday. Popo will be so busy with storm stuff I bet I could have driven 80mph the whole way.

This hurricane is getting crazy.

one of my earliest memories is staying in our house in tallahassee for hurricane Kate. My sister kept crying, but I thought it was pretty cool. A tree fell on our station wagon though, which stunk. But it was also pretty cool. But I liked that car.

my first hurricane encounter was Eloise. I don't know if that map is wrong or if Eloise had a gigantic eye, but my most vivid memory is the 30 minutes or so of calm sunny skies in the Loveliest Village. I took a jaunt up to Toomers Corner and Samford Hall to check out the damage.

Here is the hurricane Kate path, which corroborates my story: https://icons.wxug.com/data/dhc_archive_charts/at_1985_charts_zoom/at198511.gif (that's right, I'm makin you copy and paste it!)

I asked my parents if we were going to die. My dad said no, so I was good. We sat in the hallway all night and listened to the weather radio. Didn't have power for a few days. My dad said we wouldn't be staying for the next hurricane.

It's H! Guess who is working double shift at the Buy More. Yep, yours truly. Y'all may have to campfire without me tonight. I don't even know who is playing on the college gridiron. I do know that two awful hockey teams are dropping the puck in about 40 minutes (VGK @ PP). I'll miss that, too.

I'm not opposed to storm cleanup, but do we really need blowers and chain saws at 7:30 a.m.? I vote no. There were 4 trees in my lane coming home last night, one of which I couldn't see until I almost hit it. I had no idea. There was no wind at all deep in the bowels of the Buy More. I'm gonna be out and about today. Y'all play nicely.

I'm annoyed it chilled down around here so fast. I have a bunch of tomatoes on the vine that won't ripen now. I was still grabbing tomatoes in November last year because of the warm october. Doh well.

Looks like the MJT clan will be eating a bunch of fried green tomatoes in the near future.

Do people grow fried green tomatoes? That must be a marvel of genetic engineering. I've never seen anyone serve up unfried green tomatoes.

Got plenty of things I can do tomorrow. Auburn football this season on TV appeals to me almost as much as a Barbra Streisand movie

They aren't wrong about their recent hire/fire record. But at some point enough is enough. At this point in a coach's tenure, there's not many good reasons for a losing season (which we're staring in the face at the moment).

Have to say, I've liked how Green has handled himself so far. I'm a little curious how he'd handle the next hire.

2403 - AU fires Bruce Pearl.
