Yeah, I don't feel good about starting out there next year. It has not been friendly to us in any way.
I think they should move the SEC championship game around.
THT able to fit the boom into the flowing conversation. Impressive. Most impressive.
maybe have the SECCG in the Kibbie Dome. That would sell out for sure. And then go skiing at Silver Mountain. That would make for a fantastic SECCG Weekend.
AU basketball ranked for the first time in 5,460 days. They were ranked for a single week and lost their next two games. Dare I watch them tonight vs Ole Miss?
Let me tell you what I do dare to do...
BEASLEY!!!BEASLEY!!!BEASLEY!!!
BEASLEY!!!BEASLEY!!!BEASLEY!!!
BEASLEY!!!BEASLEY!!!BEASLEY!!!
BEASLEY!!!BEASLEY!!!BEASLEY!!!
BEASLEY!!!BEASLEY!!!BEASLEY!!!
BEASLEY!!!
We finished top 10 in the polls, beat bammer/uga, and went to a championship game, but the season still felt like a disappointment. On the upside, we definitely don't settle for mediocre.
I think our next good season is 2019.
i just wish we could have consistency, preferably consistent excellence. Gus is a Jekyll/Hyde coach; we don't know what we're getting from one week to the next. MrsTHT doesn't have to deal with that roller coaster frustration. She knows she won't get much work out of me every single day.
Yeah it'd be nice to be more consistent, but I think the discontent has more to do with who played in the playoffs. Jealousy is a green eyed monster.
other than the fact that I always want AU to make the playoff, and ua-t to never make the playoff, and the OSU to get hosed and left out of the playoff, and so on and so forth, I really don't care about the playoff. So I have no reason to be jealous.
Yeah. What he said.
Yall keep kidding yourselves. If Shula had just led UA to a 7-5 season, you'd be feeling mighty different about Auburn's season right now.
Shula coaches UnderArmour? Maybe Shorty can get a job there.
Yeah, I'd feel different because uga would have won the natty. And that would be pretty terrible. I actually think I might be more disappointed.
trying to watch basketball last night after watching some hockey was painful. I don't know how either team scored more than 20 points. Every time I watched, all I saw were bricks. Very impressive 25 point turnaround.
Get your dance card out, THT!
Time to start thinking about getting Final Four tickets, really.
San Antonio is a great city.
Bo Nix is a lot easier to pronounce than Tua Tagovailoa. I hope he's also a lot better than the Hawaiian. In fact, I hope he proves toxic to bammers. Give them some Bo Tox! ALL ABOARD!!! Is Eddie selling train tickets?
Negative, Ghost Rider.
I AM!!!
I really like The Outlaws music. Thanks, E-Bro!
When did we talk about The Outlaws? Was I on vacation that day?
Am I subconsciously skipping over E-Bro's posts?
Didn't you study ancient (i.e. 20th century) history when you were in school, bubbs?
Recorded by dozens of artists from 1949 onwards, but my favorite version was by The Outlaws: Ghost Rider...
1949 Vaughn Monroe (topped the charts)
1949 Bing Crosby (on charts at same time but didn't reach #1)
You must be so embarrassed right now, bubbs.
I've still got that song in my head, and I don't mind one bit.
I've only studied late 19th century history (1894-1896). Maybe I'll make it to the 20th century one of these days.
Oh, so you learned about the birth of my maternal grandfather. That's pretty cool. We didn't cover that in our history classes.
ee cummings?
e yes e cummings no. You apparently don't retain much of what you learned!
Have you had a DNA test? Because I think you'd be shocked to find out who your real maternal grandfather is.
ain't nobody testing my DNA.
Man bubbs, that's cruel. Giving a clickbait statement without a link.
Ghost Riders in the Sky always reminds me of this:
http://i68.tinypic.com/2unvkgy.jpg
Smart move. Mine got a D-.
why would they be in the kitchen, michael? That makes no sense to me at all. Plus, it would really throw off the lyrics.
maybe they were searching for cast iron pots for the trail ride? They should have come to the Buy More.
THT, you sound like my mom reading a Far Side. Father and I would just look at each other and shake our heads.
These are so much better
technological nightmare at the Buy More satellite office today. The problem with Buy More technological nightmares is they almost always prevent the shelfstockers from stocking shelves, but they almost never prevent arrival of inventory.
Penguins current 4 game win streak has rocketed them from last place all the way up to next-to-last place.*
*in my eternal optimism, my view of the standings assumes that teams that haven't played as many games as the Penguins will win the games in hand.
Kids are out school today, but I ain't.
me neither. It was a very busy work day
i’ve been informed that tonight I am watching, in its entirety, Season 3 of The Detectorists.
That is definitely in the Top 10 of my all-time favorite shows. Thanks, bubbs!!!
In case you were wondering... in no particular order
Laramie
Andy Griffith (early yrs)
Leave it to Beaver (early yrs)
St. Elsewhere (the only hospital show I've ever liked)
Star Trek Next Generation
Star Trek Voyager
Monk
JAG/NCIS
Detectorists
High Chaparral
ok, I think the top 3 would be Laramie, Monk, and Detectorists
How are you watching season 3?
It is a great show.
Acorn TV. One of y'all told me about that, too!
Oh yeah. One of my office mates had it. It may have been me that mentioned that, too.
I didn't quite pull the trigger on Acorn, but I've thought about it.
I've only used it for Detectorists. MrsTHT has used it a lot more.
Amazon Video app now on my phone. Before the long flights in April, Detectorists will also be on phone. I think I can squeeze Seasons 1 & 2 on there.
Just saw the news about Herb Hand going to Texas to strike it rich. I hope we can find a superstar OL coach quickly.
From what I've heard this wasn't a surprise. Could have a new OL coach in the next couple days.
Is it just me and you working today? Where is errbody?
We are the only responsible ones, bubbs. Either that, or we're the only ones whose spouse won't let us quit work.
how much snow y'all getting, bubbs? We're only supposed to get our usual piddly dusting or so.
Parts of the area got a nice thin blanket. We got some flurries and that's about it. The kids are devastated, but I'm elated. They can go back to danged school tomorrow.
we're getting rain
It should make a nice coat of ice once the temps drop into the 20s today. If we're lucky, we can hide it under an inch or two of snow a little later.
This is awful news.
bubbs, looks like most, if not all, season 3 episodes were uploaded to youtube right here
The final episode is there and looks complete and unblocked.
latest photo from 2.0 shows a full 3" of snow on top of our bird feeders. I want to go home and play! I wish they would lock the doors at the Buy More so customers would go shop elsewhere.
Nice!
Given your highly nonspecific comment, I'm going to make a calculated bet that you were talking about the snow and/or youtube videos and not the suicide.
it's deja vu all over again
Mostly the videos, since I didn't see the snow one till after my post. Although, I'm glad you got some white stuff.
The suicide was definitely not nice. Rather sad.
Not really feeling "nice" for Grimes either.
I feel better about Grimes than I would about two weeks of rejections followed by Grimes.
They said it wasn't a surprise ... maybe Gus kept his two weeks of rejections to himself.
Either way, the point is well taken.
What's so great about the Detectorists anyway?
There's barely any snow anywhere and everything is canceled again today. My bball team hasn't practiced since last Thursday. Our game tomorrow will probably be pretty rough.
I look forward to logging into Twitter to see which Grimes we got.
michael, they have funny accents.
And they have things that detect.
The appeal seems rather obvious, really.
I watched about 2 minutes of it one time. Didn't hook me.
Watched Last Man on Earth last night. Had a great first episode to start the season. Love that weird show.
LB watched only part of one episode of Detectorists way back when and didn't like it. His taste in TV shows is obviously as flawed as michael's. MrsTHT, 2.0 and bubbs love Detectorists. That puts me in some mighty fine company.
I mean, I didn't actively dislike the 2 minutes. My wife hated it though.
Maybe I'll try it again soon solo. If it's good enough for MrsTHT, it can't be all bad.
I tried Last Man, but someone had talked it up to me and after the first episode I sent it to the "meh" pile. I may try it again someday.
2.0 has measured 6" of snow at our house. I never got around to buying a windshield cover. The only annoying thing about snow is it delays my departure from the Buy More when I have to get the windshield clear. Still too many customers; my hopes of an early departure have faded into oblivion.
By the time you get home you can just lay down in a big bed of snow and go to sleep, THT.
that would be fun! Snow pillow >>> MyPillow
the only pillow you wouldn't have to flip over to get the cold side.
Sounds like a good marketing idea to me.
"There's no pillow like a snow pillow. You're always on the cool side."
We're infomercial away from millions, boys!
2-3” more since I took that picture. This is now the most snow we’ve had since we moved back to NC 17+ yrs ago. We missed by a couple of months the 20+” they got here 18 years ago. It’s almost time to snuggle up to some dachshunds and watch hockey.
Forgot our stint in the triangle overlapped yours. Too bad we never crossed paths (or did we?), while I was there.
come to think of it, bubbs, I believe I did see you one time at the grocery store.
Looks like we finally topped out at 11" in my neighborhood. Here are some local totals as of 9pm EST.
Lucky!
We got the cold temps but no white stuff.
Buy More Central always open. Thankfully, I was supposed to be at one of the Buy More satellite stores today.... CLOSED!!! :-D
Last night basketball and hockey did not go well :-(
If that's the way it works, I can abstain from snow. May have to take a cold shower once in a while.
bubbs, I think you've mentioned your Triangle timeline before, but I forget everythingb. Were you in this area in January 2000?.
What a weak244 winter storm that was. Bring on Spring. Tired of these cold temps with nothing to show for it.
With all that snow? Of course not. We got there in 2003.
I had to think about that way too long.
YOU TAKE THAT BACK, E-BRO!
Nope. Sorry, man. Not really down with freezing 244 temps without the snow.
14BEASLEY!!!!!!!!!!
E-Bro is a cold-natured ninny.
These are the temps when things start getting comfortable.
is michael awesome, or what?
88+ minutes of shoveling snow didn't bother me at the time. I hope I can get out of bed in the morning.
You can have your life draining temps, bubbs, to go along with the barren landscape it leaves in its wake.
I choose life and climates that support more of it with beautiful accompanying greenery. A snow fall is pretty. A cold day with just leave-less trees to look at gets old quick.
Better watch it. With that kinda talk you're liable to not get invited on any of the Mars colonization missions.
Hey it's my favorite time of a 1.0 thread - where the post numbers look like years!
1494 - Rejecting the notion that the galaxy is flat, Columbus set sail the ocean blue to colonize the cold, barren landscapes of what he believes to be Mars. Of course, through the clear hindsight of history, we know he's actually landed in Topeka, Kansas.
At least Mars looks cool, bubbs. If I lived in the desert, winter probably wouldn't be so bad. Visiting Sedona in 2011 during winter for the natty was pretty cool now that I think of it.
1495 - The Columbian Exchange kills the last of life on Mars as we know it.

1497 - four years after the first printing in Spain, the first Strasburg printing of Columbus's account of the vast Martian cornfields is published.
Whatever you do, don't skip the interview at the end, MJT.
https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/article/tommy-wiseaus-five-favorite-films/
1499 - Tommy Wiseau Sr. has a movie idea.
1500 - remembering the disastrous results on the world economy when all abaci stopped functioning at the end of the first millenium, and looking to get an early start on preventing similar calamity at the 2nd millenium, the World Abaci CounterKerfuffle Organization, holds their first meeting in the Red Roof Inn at the edge of the known world, Topeka, Kansas.
I hereby retract that ,. No, not that one. The other one.
1501 - the 2nd annual WACKO meeting is held at the edge of the known world, West Topeka, Kansas.
1502 - Columbus crosses the void to reach The New World and names it...Denver. Finds that the Rocky Mountains are as rocky as expected.
1503 - Not believing what she's seeing, Vulturnus puts on her spectacles to look at the new world. Perhaps had she stayed in the SE where she belongs, she could have gotten a better look.
Tommy Wiseau has given some truly epic interviews over the year. I read one where he got mad and walked out mid interview. I read multiple interviews where he basically complained about how evil women are, just some real straightforward misogynist stuff. Dude is crazy.
1504 - Vulturnus shoots a single shot at Ft Topeka, starting the Battle of Midway.
1505 - Betty White's first birthday is celebrated with a temporary truce in the Battle of Midway.
1506 - a toddler named Nostradamus makes the first of many predictions, claiming that someone with absolutely no connection whatsoever to Auburn University would be named athletic director. The world scoffed and ridiculed him. His parents were so embarrassed that they moved to Topeka.
1507 - The University of Cambridge is founded. It's Martian Landscapes department is seen as the high point of European intellect.
This giant mural has been at the entrance to Cambridge's Martian Landscapes department for the past 510 years.
1508 - upstart Cambridge stuns Topeka State in the first ever Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Texas.
We've still got plenty of snow shovels at the Buy More. Come on buy!
Got any cast iron snow shovels?
1509- The first cast ironware is developed for military purposes.
This is not right. Someone has stolen my idea!
https://i.imgur.com/6Qd1muJ.mp4
1510-Crows start a secret society to rule the world.
awfully busy day today, followed by the dreaded meeting night. Bubbs, thanks for keeping things afloat today.
1511 - Bernie Sylvanus publishes the first atlas printed in color, sort of kind of. People weren't impressed then, either.
bubbs, I'm glad I'm not Dutch. I would hate to be stupider than a crow. At least the crows have enough sense to know that one should not litter. I bet most crows don't smoke, either.
1512 - crows go on strike, crippling the Dutch economy
A lot of people hate on Bernie Sylvanus just because he went old school and used Ptolemy's earth for his map, but was it really all that different than Gus Malzahn incorporating the Wing T into his modern offense? Bernie S was a dang genius, if you ask me. Give Bernie S an extension!
1513 - Gerard Dioplumee discovers that "map" spelled backwards is "pam." He begins feverishly working on a design for a spray-able cooking oil so he can utilize his new discovery.
1514 - "Deeds of the Danes" is first printed. Author unknown is later killed for slandering Eurasia.
1515 Ansgar Christensen and his brother Dag record "Dirty Deeds of the Danes", a concept album based on the book by the murdered author. The title track, played backwards, sounds like "Pal Isded", leading some to believe the murdered Danish politician was the author of the book.
It's not technically murder if the King does it and the law doesn't say he can't do that sort of thing.
1516 - Terry Teddaniels digs moats around all the houses in Topeka in an attempt to make it the Venice of Mars.
1517 - Members of the Cheyenne tribe invade Topeka using gondolas. Topekans meet them in their own gondolas. It is the first known gondola battle in Earth/Mars history, though it would certainly not be the last nor the most significant. That distinction, of course, belongs to the Battle of Midway.
1518 - the feared Arapahoe use their bumper cars to decimate the Cheyenne and Topekans' gondola forces. This ultimately led to the invention of gondolas suspended from cables, instead of being pushed on the ground by minions, paving the way for the epic Battle of Midway.
At this rate, it may take us a whole century to finish this century.
1519 - Mars votes to ban all gingers.
I blame E-Bro.
1520 - December on a lonely island in the South Pacific, the crew of the Victoria, docked to replenish their fresh water supply, finds curious little creatures, some of which hideaway on the ship when it leaves. Thus were fire ants introduced to Europe. Their fire walking skills were the envy of all the native Formicidae.
Our OLine will have a combined 20 starts next season. That's troubling. Wonder if we find a JUCO guy to help with experience.
1520 - Stockholm Bloodbath happens when the Danish take out their ire on the Swedish over "The Deeds of the Danes" debacle.
1521-1522: The Danes get ants in their pants. Hilarity ensues.
I'm less troubled about the lack of O-line experience than I was two games ago.
1523 - Around this time, volcanic outgassing forms a primordial atmosphere, followed by the ocean, but there's almost no oxygen, so no known life forms can be supported.
1524 - E-Bro is labeled a Hater by Anaerobes Anonymous
1525 - AnA makes an exploratory visit to Mars. Initial prospects look promising.
Right now we're giving 4 points for the season opener against Washington. I think that's crazy talk. The only way we pull this off is if the PAC is really that bad.
The way the schedule sets up on an even year, and with lack of experience on your OLine... We could be a solid team and still only make it to 8 wins.
I'm sick of playing real teams to start the season. Where are all my cupcakes at?
1526 - The Fall of Troy.
Gus struggles when he has time. Openers and post season, Gus is pretty terrible. We need to him to not even think about game planning until the week before the game.
1527 - Ham Sammich is invented.
The actual reason for that may be that the extra time gives the other coaching staff more time to game plan for Gus.
1528 - Martin Luther nails 95 nails to a nailing board.
Kinda like having a lot of extra time to prepare for the triple option? That actually sort of make sense. Hmm. Well, that sucks, because there's no real way to fix that.
1529 - Martin Luther loses his deposit on the apartment.
I should have Final Four tickets any day now... or not. Do you have to order them to get them?
1530 - In a tragic identity mistake, a German peasant named Luther Martin is taken into custody and never heard from again. His 95 Steps were burned, thus delaying the invention of teflon for more than 400 years. The original intent of his research goes unfulfilled to this very day; namely, a substance to prevent chewing gum from sticking to the soles of your shoes.
Littered chewing gum was a huuuuge problem on the sidewalks of Dümmer.
Natty is definitely in the bag
1531 - Mice infestation
1532 - cats from Mars invade earth after hearing about an all-you-can-eat buffet
Auburn wins the cat-apult competition.
With win last night, Penguins finally have climbed into a wildcard playoff spot, by the skin of their tiny little penguin teeth. They've been pretty bad on the road this season and they have more road than home games remaining. It would be a slightly less interesting playoff season without the Penguins.
1533 - NHL expansion to the now well-settled Martian landscape with the Topeka Truckmakers joining the league. The team folds after its first year due to travel expenses and the fact that no one knows what a truck is.
How about my Nashville Preds? I mean, seriously, how about them? I have no clue how they are doing so far this year.
1534 - On his deathbed, Christopher Columbus admits that he is a robot
GO PREDS!
But yeah, how are the Preds doing? We in the playoffs? I'm a huge fan THT, so this is important for me to know.
1535 - The ongoing autopsy can neither confirm nor deny CC's claim that he was a robot.
the Predators aren't a lock for the playoffs, but they are on much more solid ground than the Penguins and will most definitely be there barring a total disaster.
Penguins record in their 7 shortest games this year: 0-7
In their longest duration regulation games, they are sort of 50/50.
They play their best in medium length games and OT games (they are a combined 9-3 in OTs/S0s)
Penguins are a net -2 in scoring for the season. They'd be on the plus side of the ledger if not for the 3 games in October in which they were cumulatively outscored 24-3.
Yes, I could play with this web site all day.
1536 or later.. Scarcely 100 years after invention of the mechanized printing press, the first printed edition of hockey statistics is published in Hochelaga.
THT, me and bubbs want to know about our preds! Not your penguins!
What is the Preds' record in their 7 shortest games this year?
What is their record in their longest duration regulation games? Are they are sort of 50/50?
How do my Preds play in medium length games and OT games? (are they are a combined 9-3 in OTs/S0s?)
What is the Preds net scoring # for the season? Would They be on the plus side of the ledger if not for the 3 games in October?
This is the info we really need.
1537 - Leff invents the Renaissance.
Unfortunately, the Preds forgot to hire a statistician this year.
1538 - Leff is unanimously selected to complete a ceiling mural started by Michael Simoni. Art critics had determined that Mike's arm length was insufficient to reach the highest parts of the ceiling. With his traction-y feet, Leff had no problem whatsoever with the precarious scaffolding.
Understandable move by the Preds. When you're that good, a statistician recording all the good stats would just make the team more cocky. Got 2 stay humble.
1539 - Otto van Bismarck unifies the 12th district's Parent Teacher Association.
What a dull weekend without hockey (all-star shenanigans don't count). I was forced to watch BC vs UMass-Lowell. It was hard to follow the hockey with the announcers so fixated on the BC coaching situation.
1540 - Hannibal triumphantly unifies the BC coaching staff at a noon banquet. Alas, the food lasted longer than the unification. Later that evening, Icees are invented at the 7-Eleven store in Topeka.
Don't hate on the announcers or Hannibal. The BC coaching situation is really really complicated.
1541 - Military standard for electromagnetic compatibility requirements is written
I'm watching 3rd-ranked St. Cloud State vs Minn-Duluth... even though it's a replay. It's all the hockey I can find right now.
1542 - Jaromir Jagr wins the scoring title in the Bohemian Youth Hockey League.
At least you've got AU basketball this year, which is not a given.
Big test tonight on the road. Why stop winning now?
1543 - A small land mass falls off the edge of the earth. All the dinosaurs go with it.
Jeez bubbs. I was hoping we could avoid the Great Dinosaur Extinction of 1543. Way too somber for this here blog, man
1544 - After falling for a year, the dinosaurs land gently on a new land, and it's called Dinosaur World, and they are happy all the time, and we can go their in our dreams (OK, maybe I made this up, but we don't really know what happens when you fall off the edge of the earth, so why not?!)
1545 - Life finds a way, i.e., the dino-sars fall through a portal and land back on earth.
The 'stache is hired as DC at Louisville by Petrino.
1546 - Benedictine monk Benito Bixby finds the dinosaurs on the island of Yucatan (that peachy colored island just west of Cuba)
1547 - Bixby signs a movie deal with Steven Spielberg
1548 - Bixby gets angry and turns into Lou Ferrigno. He travels to Brazil to fight the cannibals.
1549 - Bixby arrives in Brazil only to find that the cannibals are a jovial and friendly lot. They soon become cannipals.
1550 - MRI is invented. The magnet has been on ever since. The magnet is ALWAYS* on. Even at night when everyone has gone home. Even when there is a power failure. Don't believe someone who tells you differently or there could be a bad outcome.
*That's almost 100% true.
You know back in my day, I was a babe magnet that was always on!
1551 - Mice! Again!!!
In reverse polarity?
Now that I think about it, that's kinda how I am now. I've gotten good at a general "leave me alone" vibe.
1552 - Bixby sells the cannibals on shifting a portion of their diet to mice. The mice population returns to manageable levels.
It really hurt my feelings when you suggested my babe magnet had reverse polarity, bubbs.
1553 - bus
Yeah, that's kind of my thing.
1554 - E-Bro's ancestors make awkward conversation with fellow patrons at a tavern in Cork.
Hey, Valentines day is right around the corner. Good thing I'm married, so I don't have to do anything for it.
1555 - Eurasia and 1.0 shift to southern polarity. All those from the north are repelled.
Last few years I've cooked the wife and myself some nice filets for valentine's. we let the kids eat cheap walmart sirloins. Think I'll do that again this year. When you make it at home, it's basically cheaper than going out to Applebee's.
Fancy restaurants on Valentine's are for losers.
I remember when we were dating/married in Auburn, we would always go to Provino's for Valentine's Day. It was the nicest place that didn't accept reservations, and being a rabid non-planner, I would never think far enough ahead to make reservations somewhere for Valentine's. So you'd go into Provino's at 5:30, they'd say it was a 2 hour wait, you'd wander off and then come back and eat food when appropriate.
They have good salad and rolls at Provino's. Don't @ me.
1556 - Alfred Bootshanks writes the world's best opera, but refuses to release it since synthesizers haven't been invented yet. When synthesizers were invented one hundred years later, his great great grandnephew and executor of the Bootshanks estate is asked if the opera can finally be released. "No," he answered. "The synthesizers aren't good enough yet." To this day, we wait for good enough synthesizers.
The Manicotti at Provino's is pretty solid from what I remember, but yes, if I'm there, it's mainly for the rolls and salad. And somebody's birthday, of course.
1557 - Local tribe of Creek Native Americans from around what one day will be settled as Auburn are declared Creek Nation champs in Lacrosse.
We don't have family that lives near by, so we always have to factor in a babysitter (for 4 kids). So once you through that in along with the cost of eating out ... we can easily eat fancier at home for less.
1558 - Bixby's cannibals open a restaurant focusing on human flesh and mice. Most only go for the rolls and salad.
In my lernt opinion, stay home vacation is still vastly underrated. I've spent the entire morning wondering where I can find the name of a ship that left London in April 1700, stopped in Cowes on Isle of Wight to pick up some passengers, then had a 10 day layover in those Scilly Islands to repair a leak, before departing on May 1, 1700, and arriving at Sandy Hook, NJ, near the end of July, the winds preventing them from attaining NY harbor.
There is no way one could waste an entire morning like that at work or on a travel vacation.
1559 - The Good Ship Lollipop sails from NY to London, not to return until late July, 1700.
Valentine's Day? Never heard of it.
1560 - Bixby's cannibals' restaurant develops the filly cheesesteak, instantly rocketing them to the top of the YELP ratings. Most say it's better than Chili's.
I started to look for the ship and quickly realized this was going to be a rabbit hole I don't have time for today. Did you figure it out?
1561 - Bixby franchises the restaurant. Of Mice and Men opens two new locations.
Wow. Never knew the origin of the phrases "Good Ship Lollipop" or "Of Mice and Men" until you history buffs showed me the way. This is the most educational blog ever!
bubbs, isn't your oldest pretty old by now? You got a free babysitter right there. That was lifechanging for the Mrs and me.
1562 - erie canal
bubbs, I got distracted and went off on another tangent. I've sent some inquiries.
1563 - Fidgety Fitch, an uncommonly intelligent member of the Cahuilla Tribe, invents a steam-powered boat. Unfortunately, the Salton Sea cycles through a dry period immediately thereafter, stranding his boat in the desert. Fidge, as he was known to his friends, then repurposed the boat into the first steam-powered farm tractor, only to realize that they had no source of steam. The boat was subsequently dragged and pushed across the desert and mountains to Chula Vista where it has been anchored in the bay as a floating Of Mice and Men restaurant ever since.
The oldest is 12. She can handle the house in many respects (she babysits for some other folks on occasion). The problem is Con-artist. ADD (not diagnosed but pretty sure she has it) plus volatile emotions make it difficult for us to manage her. Hard to put D1 in a position to be responsible for that.
With that said, we do leave them for shorter periods of time. A couple hours here and there. I'd probably take a night out and leave them, but the wife is more reticent.
1564 - Of Mice and Men strikes a deal to be the sole vendor on the Good Ship Lollipop. Unfortunately, the ship goes missing before they can get the roasting spits fitted.
I'm all Scrivenered out and I haven't even started a project yet. Probably never will.
1565 - Ivan IV, in a terrible miscalculation, secretly meets with agents of that nuttiest of gingers, Erik XIV, in a plan to steal the election in New Sweden, not realizing that the Dutch had already taken New Sweden. The Dutch ban Swedish meatballs throughout the entire river valley, forcing Pat to switch to grilled chopped steak on his famous sammiches.
How about them Eagles?
1566 - where have all the mice gone?
Didn't watch the whole game, but what I did watch was pretty entertaining. Plus, I'm glad the Patriots lost. So I got that going for me on a Monday.
GO PREDS!
1567 - Due to shortage of mice, Of Mice and Men have massive profit loss for the fiscal year. The next year will prove pivotal for the franchise.
I say this as an avowed fan of all things Jurassic Park. The new movie does not look. And I get that most of the films since the first have not, in fact, been all that good, but still.
The Lost World was at least an interesting concept that was fine until they brought Rex to San Diego. JP3 was a cash grab. Jurassic World at least kind or reset things and tugged at the nostalgic heartstrings a bit to help you overlook the flaws.
But that Goldblum Jeep commercial ruled, though.
1568 - Leo Tolstoy begins writing War and Peace in response to astounding success for Of Mice and Men.
didn't watch the game, didn't care one tiny little bit about it. Next to last day of vacation, must get back to my studies.
1569 - Jerry Mercator makes Greenland look huuuuge
1570 - Jerry's friend, Abe Ortel, solves a problem everyone was having... how to keep up with all their maps. He binds a bunch of maps into a book.. It instantly jumps ahead of War and Peace on the New Amsterdam's bestsellers list.
I think the new Jurassic Park will be just fine like all the other sequels. Dinosaurs eating people, kids in danger, looks like they are hitting the prescribed points. I'm not anticipating a big drop off, because it's not like bar was set all that high or anything.
1571 - In his definitive retrospective series on the 1560's, Danny Battazooka argues that 1568 was in no way a pivotal year for the "Of Mice and Men" restaurant franchise.
That's just, like, your opinion, man.
Just keep the dino-sars on the island is all I really want. Unless we're talking about kaiju, monsters running amok in civilization isn't all that interesting to me.
1572 - Kaiju come out of the sea and attack Topeka, mistaking it for Tokyo. Realizing their mistake, they immediately withdraw and bow an apology.
JP is doing just fine. From what I understand this one is a better treatment of one of the books they botched in the first series. Per usual, if it follows the books more closely it's bound to be a better movie.
1573 - Of Mice and Men finds itself in litigation when the public finds out it's been substituting squirrel in many of its mice dishes. They build a case that squirrels are just a furrier version of mice.
There were only two books... and none of them included a volcano or dino-sars running amok in civilization. The first book did have a subplot of dinosaurs getting off the island, but it was more stealth style. That was actually the main thematic threat in the first book, and the main argument in my mind against recreating the dinosaurs. Not that the fences could go down and they could kill tourists, but that they could be the ultimate invasive species if they got off the island. What happened on the island was just a visceral picture of the bigger problem you introduce.
They did take a few unused things from the first books in the last movie (camou-dinosaur, philosophizing on the dinosaurs being genetic creations and not true dinosaurs), so maybe they'll borrow other things in the movie coming up?
I'm just glad there's a place on the internet where I can have these way more in-depth than warranted discussions of Jurassic Park.
1574 - where did all the squirrels go?!?!
Clearly, you know more about JP than I do. I was just going off some vague hearsay. Apparently, it was less than accurate. But that's alright. I still think the movie will be just fine.
1575 - When another person got involved, the squirrels were found on the other side of the tree.
More in-depth than warranted? You slanderer!
1576 - A dog thinks "SQUIRREL!" for the firs time when seeing one.
JP.... yawn.
1577 - Of Mice and Men achieves record profits with their new squirrel butter & jelly sammiches
Why are we having a military parade? I guess I could ask google, but I'd rather ask 1.0.
I think we should have a recruit parade. All new recruits do a Tiger Walk!
1578 - Martin Frobisher holds the first Thanksgiving celebration by Europeans in North America, on Newfoundland. He ships ore, which proves to be valueless fool's gold, which can only be used as road metal in London.
Our house was one of the earliest in the neighborhood. Over the next few years, I gathered quite a collection of Frobisher Ore from the temporary gravel driveways as houses were being constructed. I also found a northwest passage through the woods.
1579 - because of his foolish antics, QE I makes Frobisher dress like this and parade around Picadilly Circus very Wednesday afternoon at tea time.
Pearl's boys showed a lot of grit last night, although I didn't see GL anywhere.
1580 - Billy Mitchell's violent eruption in protest of an absurd blocking call due to the stupid restricted zone leads to a drop in global temperatures and a very cold day in Hell, Michigan.
1581 -Sir Walter Raleigh starts dreaming about establishing an English colony in North America
1582 - he thinks about it some more
1583 - he starts working on a plan to make it happen
1584 July 4 - Capt. Philip Amadas and Master Arthur Barlowe dock their ships at the marina on Roanoke Island, becoming the first Englishmen to set foot in North Carolina. They celebrate with fireworks and shouts of

MJT is a free enterprise, rocket hater. Commie!
1585 - The Treaty of Nonsuch was signed by Elizabeth I of England and the Dutch Rebels fighting against Spanish rule.
Ehhhh why don't you go orbit mars, bubbs!
1586 - great. Spiders!!!!!!
I noticed you picked the RED planet. Commie!
1587 - Of Mice and Men do nothing about the spiders.
15BEASLEY!!!!!!!
I'm not a commie! You and Elon are commies!
1588 - Paper plates are invented
Went to see Neil deGrasse Tyson speak last night. He spoke good.
1589 - The Hofbräuhaus opens up in Munich.
NGT was very pro NASA. Did he make any comments about SpaceX? At least in the past, he wasn't very keen on privatizing the space program.
1590 - Wooden spoons are invented.
Well, the focus of the lecture was The Search for Life in the Universe. Other than making a joke about the Tesla in outer space, he didn't really touch on anything as far as SpaceX/Musk go.
Briefly mentioned his role on the NASA advisory council, and you could tell how much past NASA missions like Cassini meant to him as well.
1591 - Famed tea master Rikyu commits hara-kiri.
I got nothin' today.
I don't even know what happened in 1592.
Your lack of content saddens me.
1593 - It was the start of a bad run for Giordano Bruno.
NGT used to be cool but he acts like a tool a lot too but I bet he can still be cool sometimes, so congrats on getting to see him Ebro.
1594 - Higg's Boson goes snorkeling for the first time.
I have the same impression. I would also place Bill Nye in that same category.
1595 - Dolphins land in there spaceship and begin populating the oceans.
Hipsters. Probably stopped being cool to y'all when he stopped doing NOVA, huh?
He definitely puts on a bit of act, and the first 15-20 minutes of the two hour lecture were weighed down by this a bit, but once he got that out of the way, it was pretty cool. Once the act stopped, the science and the intellect came to the fore and it was very enjoyable and stimulating.
Think the same goes for Bill Nye. I've watched his series on Netflix. It can be overwrought, but at the core, the dude loves and knows a lot about science, and no matter how tired he probably gets of his own act, he generally can't help but be a big kid, simply curious about how things work.
I would say that goes for both BN and NDT, especially when I hear them on Startalk where they can more easily geek out about science. And those moments are still very enjoyable and interesting.
1596 - The first WC is installed in, where else, Europe.
Just popping in to say hi and make sure you are all doing okay. Still up to my eyeballs on condo reno. Water sure can make a mess!!
Hey Cincy! I got an update from Papa Gene. Mercy, what a mess.
How 'bout them softballers yesterday and the equestrians today! War Eagle!!!
1598 - Members of the Vienna Boys Choir invent canned sausage
Puck drop for pens starts now on NBC
Nice, Murray was stellar, and Crosby with his 400th goal.
BOOOOOM!
1601 - Stephen King ghost pens Hamlet.
BOOOOOOOOOOM part deux - a Jimmy sighting! Murray was indeed stellar. Absolutely superb. Pens needed those points badly. Everyone around them except the Devils won. Pens look good in the standings but other teams have games in hand. I hope Jimmy's Kings win on Tuesday and Saturday, but not Thursday.
1601 - 3rd time proves to be a charm in the beheading of Robert Devereux. Audience and critics pan King's attempt at a musical production of Hamlet. (I had already written the first part, then forgot to look up something for 1602, and now that I realize that, it'll probably be 1603 before I get this thing posted)
1602 - it's about time the Bodleian Library opened. Jeeesh. King's follow-up, Twelfth Night, last only 1 night on Broadway.
GO PREDS!
1603 - First Knight starring Sean Connery opens at Stratford-on-Avon
