News of the day, 11/13
Hey everyone. I didn't write anything for Tuesday's paper, which ends a long streak of everyday coverage. I will have something in Wednesday's editions about how the team is dealing with lingering disappointment from its recent disembowelment. You know what I'm talking about.
It's been a very interesting week at Auburn. I still can't get a feel for what will happen with Tommy Tuberville. I'll elaborate more on that below.
We're tempted to say the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net is just another blog, but we know better.
I'm getting the distinct feeling that Important People are not very happy with Tuberville right now. He still isn't providing even an ounce of confirmation -- even false confirmation -- that he intends to stay at Auburn. It's reasonable to infer that Tuberville believes he has leverage of some kind. He's still planning to meet with Auburn officials at season's end to discuss things. He wants multi-year contracts for his assistants, some assurances about facility upgrades and perhaps some extra cash.
I believe he had the upper hand last week. Now the Tigers are 7-4, fresh off a complete annihilation in Athens and facing a must-win game against Alabama. Does that sound like a coach on sound footing? A lot of people have been turned off by Tuberville's lack of future-career discussion during the past week. He's smart. He knows that his current position is creating disdain. It's reasonable to assume he's doing this on purpose.

I believe it is absolutely safe to assume that Tuberville know's what he is doing when he refuses to answer questions about his future plans. The million $ question is why is he doing it. If he plans on staying at Auburn then he must be confident that they'll win the IB, otherwise now is a good time to hedge your bets and declare your allegiance to Auburn after what happened with the UGA game. My guess is that he is planning on leaving and probably doesn't want to take the same heat he took at Ole Miss by making statements that he'd never leave that school.
One thing that is curious is that he has moved into his new home, which last time I drove by didn't even have the landscaping complete. If he were leaving you'd think he wouldn't go through the hastle of moving twice in a year, but that might not be a problem for someone in his situation.
I'd like to see a legitimate list of possible replacements if he does leave.
Well, how about this. He saw the emasculation Nick Saban took for saying he wasn't leaving Miami and then left. Maybe he's looking to stay away from that, and by not saying anything, at least he's not going to look the fool.
Either that, or Irene has him by the balls. She's done that to people. Isn't that right CPF?
I can't imagine there are alot of folks in Auburn able to buy the house he just built. Odd thing to do if you think you might leave...
To HABOTN readers:
I deleted the first comment of my career today from a poster who took several digs at me (fine) and one at my employer (not fine).
The HABOTN is a harmonious place where free exchange of (rational, credible) ideas is encouraged. I hate censoring people, but this place will not devolve into a haven for trash-talking. If you need that fix, go somewhere else.
That is all.
If Tubbs does leave (I still cant decide if that's good or bad for AU), who do we go after?
Do we give it to Borges, with no HC experience? Or Muschamp, in the same situation.
I love Muschamp as a DC, but if he's going to be a head coach someday, and I'm sure he will, he should probably tone it down a notch.
I'd think Petrino or Muschamp would be at the top. The knock on Muschamp, if there is one, is that he may be viewed as some people as Nick Saban's assistant ... after having served in that role for a few years.
I can safely say that Muschamp's relationship with Saban would not compromise competitive allegiances. They're not very tight.
Borges will not be the HC, heck, even if Tubs stays at Auburn, Borges won't be back next season. If CTT leaves, Auburn's first call will be to Bobby Petrino. Honestly, I think he'd come. Watch it happen, Tubs leaves and AU signs CBP to a 5 year $16.8M deal.
Yea. There is no way Al Borges is the next Auburn head coach. At this point, I'd be surprised to see him as the team's offensive coordinator next year.
I agree with your comment that Auburn is getting tired of TT's flirting with A&M and that Al Borges will be gone at the end of the year. I heard the same things from a very reliable source last week. Whether TT goes or not, Al will be replaced because they do not see eye to eye. I have also heard that if TT goes Auburn will be going after Petrino. He is a no-nonsense coach who is not afraid of anyone and does not play nice. Remind you of anyone??? Should TT go we will need someone who plays tough. I was also told that every time TT goes into a recruit's home, within 30 minutes or so, a Bama recruiter is going in right behind him and it does not matter if the recruit is a 5-star or a no-star. Bama claims that they are not afraid of Auburn, however, they are stalking every move TT makes. I guess someone at Bama has figured out that TT knows how to spot potential talent. However, I am getting concerned that all this talk of TT leaving is running off recruits. I just read that one of our commitments is back out there looking. TT could end all this speculation but he continues to let this dangle. I used to think there was no way he would leave, now I am bracing myself for that very real possibility. If TT leaves, my money is on Petrino. Auburn has been flirting with him since 2003. Let him finally come in and see if he is worth all the fuss.
I don't buy into the Petrino talk. I don't see that happening. And I don't see a logical choice out there right now. I do think TT is done at Auburn. And, if he's not, I think he enjoys the game of negotiation better than I do.
Borges, respectfully, will not be there next year and I don't know if that is good or bad. I know Borges' record at each stop he's made. I know years 1 and 2 are very good. However, the west coast O is dead. And, Borges' version of it is a total mystery. We're not doing ANYTHING we did in '04 and '05. The shifts, the reverses, the selling of the reverses...all gone. Our problem is complete and utter predictability.
Is that Al's fault? TT's fault? Or a combination of both? Something is just not meshing there. It's hard for me to understand the comments people make about Auburn's average wide receivers. How does anybody know how good or how average Auburn's receivers are??? When was the last time you remember Cox throwing the ball in an area where a receiver could make a catch? Trust me, Cox's arm is strong enough to make most things happen.
I'm close to saying, at this point, that Auburn may be better off with a new boss. I'm not afraid of the idea that Muschamp would have to go either. A DB specialist does not know how to coach DBs in how to make a play on the ball. It's more than just simply athleticism that makes DBs good cover guys.
Bobby Petrino would certainly be worth the fuss. He's an offensive genious, but he is also a jerk, much like Saban at UAT. IMHO, the ideal situation would be for CTT to stay at AU and hire a young innovative OC that he gives complete control of the offense to. What do I think happens? Tuberville stays, Clemson OC Rob Spence is hired, Greg Knox is fired as WR coach.
The above poster lost me with this comment:
Trust me, Cox's arm is strong enough to make most things happen.
Totally false.
Based on my limited knowledge of who would be available, Petrino would be my first choice. It would be a longshot to land him, though.
What has Muschamp has done to make him a candidate?
Who else is out there? Jimbo Fisher hasn't gotten any results at FSU, but I still think he's a good coach.
I have some pretty specific opinions on the Muschamp/DBs/playing the ball tangent. I'll get to that in today's (11/15) blog, which I'll get cookin within the hour.
Cox made a lot of difficult passes throughout his stay at Auburn. Vs. UF this year, he put on quite a show. Here's the deal, at some point you put the ball in a space where a receiver can make a play. Cox could have done that here. Too late...
Today is 11/14.
Tomorrow is 11/15. Christmas is on Dec 25th.
My Birthday is July 17th.
Would you like a Tubby bobblehead doll? I think they'll be in higher demand in College Station by the time your Bday rolls back around.
11/14 blog. All apologies.
Maybe we could make that a song: All Apologies. Grungy song. We'd need a brooding singer. Ideas?
I think Wes Byrum could pull it off.
Something tells me that Wes isn't grungy in the Seattle sense. Maybe it's the ropes.
But kickers are crazy, man..especially that guy. He can be converted away from the Florida daisey duke and gold chain image that's so easily identified in Gainesville and Tally.
I am Steve "the ole ball coach" If I am not happy at my current situation in South Carolina and was interested in Auburn, would Auburn be interested in me?
Hey Steve. I thought you were golfing today.
If it helps you get a fatter contract, there is no doubt that Auburn is interested in you. Tell everyone.
