News of the day, 1/26

Hey everyone. We've got a few Auburn-related items shakin, so let's get to business.

First, though, allow me to thank you all for making this the HOTTEST Auburn blog on the 'net.

Alabama 97, Auburn 77: That's some old-fashioned humbling stuff right there. I wouldn't say the Tigers played poorly overall, but defense obviously was a major issue. Alabama built a 17-0 run in the first half that basically held. Auburn cut it down to 15 late. Too late.

The Tide hit 48 percent from three-point range and 54 percent overall. Perhaps most incredibly, the team home team committed only four turnovers. That pretty incredible efficiency.

What does this mean for Auburn? That depends. The team was on a three-game winning streak before this debacle, and it's still reasonable to think Jeff Lebo's team can finish in the middle of the SEC pack. This is an OK team that will have good nights (Ole Miss) and bad ones (you just saw one).

I'll let you decide if that's acceptable. As my buddy and co-worker Josh Moon often says: It's all about football at Auburn.

On the football recruiting front, Auburn landed DT Freddie Smooth (great name) on Friday. He is Auburn's 25th commitment of the year, though three of those kids already are enrolled. What do I think of Smooth? He's an unrefined big body that could become Josh Thompson. It'll take a few years at least ... just as it did with Josh.

i think the senators would have been at least that competetive. off topic, is aum really considering a football program? i find that hard to believe.

simply put, bama players hit their shots, and a lot of ours didnt fall. if we hit a few more oof ours, we are in that game. the 1st 12 minutes we looked great. i think there were a lot of uncalled fouls on bama and a lot of unnecessary ones on AU.

Like Lebo said, when we shoot well and stay out of foul trouble, we win and visa versa. if we had any sort of inside presence, the bama D would not have been near as good. I wish we couldve gotten Sylla in to rebound and feed inside. the paint was open all night. I though rasheem had a good game, as did prowell.

One positive to take away was our free throw shooting: 90% in the 1st half and about 75% on. we typically dont shoot FT well. bama on the other hand, was a terrible FT shooting team. THe score could have been A LOT worse if they shot them well.

I really like Lucas Hargrove. He got embarassed on that fast break when he whiffed on the block, but he was in the right place, just missed the ball. He plays hard, and can score from anywhere. He is a lot of fun to watch, kinda similar to Chris Porter.

We have a lot of SEC games to play, and Im not ready to write us off. If we can get Sylla to start giving some quality minutes, that will help out. Either way, this team has heart and that is enough for me to believe in them.

War Eagle!

to add to the last one: the difference:

points off turnovers.
AU - 3 Bama - 24

we have to make good passes, and create some turnvovers

I think an AUM football program could be very successful. In fact I wouldn't be suprised with the huge talent pool in Alabama and Georgia that they would compete with Auburn in 10-15 years. That is with the right coaches of course. UAB did beat LSU and the might Nick Satan one time

personally, i think that the dreadful expense of a football program will weigh heavily on the purported mission of aum. regarding au's performance in tuscaloosa, no d, no win.

Blogger ADP said...

Scott from Tuscon ... what is the purported mission of AUM? I don't know.

I am asking because I know they have a basketball team and a soccer team. I think they also have a baseball team now. Why not have a football team?

I think AUM will build a football team ... because Faulkner has a football team.

I'll never see a day when AUM football competes with Auburn. That won't happen. UAB is a major university with an enrollment waaaaaaay larger than AUM.

In a related note: Faulkner def. AUM, 86-65.

As far as Auburn hoops goes -- what a mess. Alabama is not good. I'll be interested to see what the Tigers "learn" from this debacle. If the team flatlines, which seems unlikely yet is plausible, is that the end of Lebo?

A $100 million arena awaits. Auburn needs energy.

THe game changed as soon as Prowell went out in the first half with 2 fouls and AU never got it back. Until we get some height on the floor,Prowell is the only chance to rebound or go inside.

I think we used up all of our magic pixie dust against Ole Miss. I doubt we will finish .500 but who knows. After 7 or 8 minutes of the second half, I just had to get up and quit watching.

I'm not bashing Lebo, but I can tell you what happened. Alabama started making a run with around 10 minutes to go in the first half. So one or all of the coaches tells the team "Calm down" which is always dangerous to say, because ... you can get over calm and go completely flat. From that point on, it's like the basket has an invisible lid on it.

Good news ... LSU comes to town this week.

Is anyone really surprised by the b-ball team's showing? I mean, this is a mediocre team that will have good days and bad. Yesterday was a bad one. No need to start the "Lebo is gone" talk.

And to aqn04. I promise you I am no internet nerd. Hell, I dont even know how to get a name on here, nor do I care to take the time. And as I said in my original statement, take what I said about Dollard for what it is worth. You feel it is worth nothing, so ignore it.

Josh Thompson was pretty SEC competitive right off the bat. He was always stronger than everybody else, although just never enough range.

Are we still on Dollard? Goodness gracious!

I was really surprised that Auburn was mauled so badly in Tuscaloosa. I did not see that one coming at all.

Bama had all week to prepare and they had to play a good game after losing their first four conf games. AU tired from only playing 7players and were ready for a bad game. How could you not at least think there was a possibility of a blowout? Auburn needs players. Until they get them, it doesn't matter who's coaching. Everybody needs to get off of Lebo's back and start the campaign to get rid of Slater. Unlike Lebo, he does have talent. He just can't coach.

Ouch.

A blowout loss to team that's 0-4 in the SEC never is expected.

Poor Tommy Slater. He needs a good season to stay, I think.

If Lebo was coaching Alabama they would be much better than 1-4 in league play.

regarding the mission for aum, their web site contains their mission statement. soccer, basketball and baseball are way cheaper to run. even if aum leases facilities, the equipment, staff, insurance etc.,will call for a huge up front expenditure. if the program is self-sustaining, i'd have no problem with. always enjoyed my years at aum and support them financially as i can. given current economic projections, i just think that now is not the best time to start up a program that will be a budget drag for years. also, if they have a football team that (eventually) offers scholarships, they will, per title 9, have to offer an equivalent women's program, i think. lots of schools have basketball but no football.

Jay, you're right. A blowout to a team as wobbly as Alabama can not be weaved into anything acceptable. They're (UA,T) just not a good team period.

I do think we can expect to see a handful more losses like this one this season.

It's all about what Faulkner does, Scott. You're forgetting that important element of the story!

RE: AUM FOOTBALL, SURE, KEEP UP WITH THE JONES' IF ONE CAN. I DON'T THINK THAT, UNLESS THERE IS A PRETTY LARGE INVESTOR ON THE HORIZON (TO DATE, AUM'S LARGEST CONTRIBUTION HAS BEEN 1.5 MIL FROM A SAUDI PRINCE DOING DOUBLE DUTY AT THE AIR WAR COLLEGE AT MAXWELL), AUM CAN MUSTER THE PROPER FUNDS. sorry for the all caps, could'nt undo them without retyping and it's tax time and late and i'm tired. timing's all wrong for aum unless they hook up with a booster (a lowder) who wants to run the program like jones runs the cowboys. that wouls be worse than no program at all....

"Are we still on Dollard? Goodness gracious!" Of course, I thought this was an Auburn Sports blog. I've been wrong before though. Dollard would be a critical component on this team right now. By all means though, talk about AUM, Faulkner, and some new video game. "I concur."

Yeah, Jay, don't you know that talking about Auburn basketball has to mean talking about all the excuses CJL makes for himself, not to mention all the excuses his lackeys in the media make for him?

You're not a lackey. Good work.

I also heard that aum will think about club football 1st then explore options after that, kind of like south alabama did they played club football and now will add football in 09.
