News of the day, 2/23

Hey everyone. I stopped by to pass along a non-Auburn piece of information. I'm planning to work on some Auburn-related stuff later in the days, so check back this afternoon for that.

I passed along some comments from Pat Dye on the blog yesterday. Here is the full column I wrote for Saturday's editions.
I watched basketball signee Frankie Sullivan play twice during the past week. He's in his sixth season as a varsity guy for R.C. Hatch High and is aiming for a fifth state championship. Isn't that nuts?

Here are his lines from the week:
Game 1 vs. Lanett: 26 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks in 22 minutes
Game 2 vs. Pickens: 23 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 6 steals in 32 minutes

I watched the Pickens game with Auburn assistant coach Brandon Johnson, who was there to show support or whatever college assistants do when they go to see their signees. He acknowledged that Sullivan, who is 6-foot-1 has the body of a point guard but a skill set that ideally works better at shooting guard.

Not that Johnson cares. He said teams these days don't necessarily need a ball-handling specialist at point guard. He cited Florida as an example of a team that succeeds without a true point guard.

Do you buy it? They sure do.

Anyway, I asked head coach Jeff Lebo about Sullivan on Friday morning. Here's what he said:
We are very excited about Frankie Sullivan Frankie brings a lot of different things to the table. One thing that he brings is athleticism. He brings the ability to score in the backcourt. He can shoot it and get to the rim. He has gotten stronger. The one great thing I like about him is that he's a winner. He is used to winning and used to playing in big games. He has some leadership qualities that I like. He can play (point) and he can play (shooting guard) for us. I'm really excited about the season he's having. He has to do a lot for his team. I have yet to see him have a bad night when I watched him play. He finds a way to help his team in any way and that is the sign of a good player. I'd like to see him be able to play -- because of his size defensively -- a scoring point for us. He'll also have a chance to play at (shooting guard) because of his ability to shoot."
I concur with most of Lebo's assessments. Sullivan, though, will need some serious work on defensive positioning and shot selection. With that said, the kid is a scorer, a very intuitive passer and someone who has the moxie you'd expect from a big-time prospect.

----------------
OK. So you know I'm a Guitar Hero buff. Our friends who play GH3 on Wii have been bitter for months now because the game only plays in mono. Bummer. After months of dodgy behavior from Activision regarding this issue, the company dropped a mea culpa yesterday.
We are committed to providing our customers with quality game experiences and apologize for any audio output issues you may have experienced with the Wii version of Guitar Hero® III: Legends of Rock. Activision has worked with Nintendo to re-master the game and provide a replacement disc to consumers with Dolby digital surround sound and other consumers experiencing audio issues. If you wish to receive a full refund on your purchase price instead of a replacement disc, please click here and download the refund form, which outlines our refund requirements.
So you can either get a new disc that will play the game in Dolby surround or just trade the game in for full credit.

Hey, that's somewhat ballsy. I give Activision credit for that one.

*In a somewhat related note, my lovely wife snagged a box full o' Rock Band yesterday at Target. It was on sale for $149. That's a lot better than the $189 price at launch. So I'll be knocking out some RB this weekend. I'll be getting some downloadable content, too, from Rush and Metallica.

When I was a kid, man, I soooo wanted to be Lars Ulrich playing anything from ...And Justice For All. Now I get to live the dream. Sort of.

Anybody have an update on the criminal scorecard? Even if you roll your eyes, let's still keep it posted. I think it's a must since every program has been generalized lately for a few bad apples like UAT, UT, and UGA.

I haven't heard anything lately. But there is this weekend coming up. Plenty of opportunity.

If there is golf involved, you can rest assured I won't be there. I haven't played a round since 1985 and I'm hoping to say that on my dying day. I like covering golf, I like the (few) professional golfers whom I have interviewed, but I absolutely loathe the idea of playing the game.

And, no, it doesn't have anything to do with an aversion to the outdoors. I'm the oldest guy at the skate park during the summers.

I can play golf every once in a while. And I can attend a professional event from time to time. But I revere the coverage of the sport the same way I do tennis. Actually, I think tennis can be way cooler.

Arkansas vs Kentucky

I remember back when I would be VERY excited to watch this matchup. Not so much these days. All the kids that used to excite you at this level at an early age are now in the NBA. And they're all the same size, all have the same skills, and all are completely loaded down neck to foot in tats.

Boring.

12:52 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Via Ian Rapoport's blog, a release from the Tuscaloosa P.D.

The bar was closing and Legacy security personnel were escorting an un-named subject from the bar. Another man, later identified as Johnson, attempted to intervene and pushed one of the security officers who fell out of the front doorway and onto the ground.

TPD officers then moved in and took Johnson into custody after a brief struggle. A large crowd
had gathered during the incident and additional officers with TPD and UA responded to assist
with crowd control. Johnson was not injured.

So that's eight under Saban?

12:53 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

And, hey, I miss those days of Mayberry and Day and Corliss and Big O ... even if they undermined Pitino now and again.

Hey, don't diss the tats. I have one. Just got it in September, too, so it's not the product of some college bender gone wrong.

12:56 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jay, I am trying to understand why you got a tattoo. Help me with this. I don't disapprove, I just don't understand.

Has anyone figured out the daily arrest/legal issue rate at UA since this started? I feel like it's around one breaking story every three days. I don't know. Anybody?

1:02 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

You know, I have this feeling that UA player's arrest rate may have something to do with Saban's personality. As in, maybe folks around there think he is an arrogant bas#*rd and don't like him so much. Back in the day, and probably still the case in some places, a coach would have been called and no arrest made.

What do ya'll think about that?

1:05 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

I won't go into details about my tat. I will say that it's on my neck and the idea to get it was several months in the making. It was FUN to get it done. Seriously. I'm glad I have it.

1:29 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Okay.

What about my theory?

1:40 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Phred, your theory could easily be right. Or it could be just one of many variables. Any way you slice it, Saban is NOT doing anything about it. Deandre Green fired a gun off on or near campus. He got kicked off the team and that was that.

Kevin Sears never got out of the doghouse once he did what he did. He ended up playing one more half of a football game and he was a difference maker.

The fact that Elder is not OFF the team without question is the tell tale sign of the matter of control up there.

On tats...

I do think one tatoo is quite a bit different than completely covering two entire arms worth of ink. I just shake my head and that stuff. That's just me. I'm just not impressed with the attempts to be different when everybody else is doing the same thing.

1:57 PM

Why is it not sexy to play for UK these days? Where are those types of kids playing, the ones that aren't in the NBA?

Jarmon Fortson Rumor

Anybody heard this one? That Jarmon will not play for FSU and will, in fact, sign to play with Auburn? He'll have to sit out in '08 but that's not much different than redshirting.

This is rumor, but several people have mentioned it.

I plan to read this on Finebaum Monday.

Please tell me what you think.

To all the Bammers who can’t understand why the Aubs like talking about you so much. You know the ones … “for the Aubs it always comes back to Bama. Why are they always talking about Bama?”

I’ll tell you why. Because it is so much fun. It’s a blast. We love to rub your nose in it. It took a while. But when it comes around, man it really comes around. We LOVE it! We think it is FANTASTIC! We cannot get enough of it. It’s like watching a car wreck happen. I mean, you just can’t stop watching.

The second reason we talk about you is because it’s the off season and we don’t have anything else to talk about. THERE IS NOTHING GOING ON IN AUBURN! No one is getting arrested. No one is on trial. No one just bonded out of jail. No one forgot to pay their child support. No one is the star witness in a capital murder trial. No one committed armed robbery. No one got arrested for disorderly conduct. Is it really that hard to understand?

But Bammers are so delusional, so misguided, so lacking in perspective, that you think we are talking about you because we want to be you, because we are jealous of you and that deep down in our poor Aub hearts we know that we just don’t measure up to the Bammers. What? Are you crazy? Have you lost you Bear worshiping mind?

We like to talk about you because you have become pitiful. It’s like talking about Mike Tyson, or Michael Vick, or some other former great who has became a complete loser once his true nature was revealed.

We talk about you because it is fun. We talk about you because we love to see you squirm. We talk about you because, Lord, there’s just so much to talk about. We talk about you because you are a case study in delusions of grandeur en masse. We talk about you because you were so arrogant for so long and we enjoy whipping you arrogant ass. We take great pride and great pleasure in it. We also enjoy watching other people whip you ass and take almost as much pleasure in that. Don’t believe us when we say we are pulling for you. We are not. We truly despise you. There is not enough misery that you could endure that would satisfy us. We anxiously wait for more, so that we will have more to talk about. So far, you have obliged us at every turn and have not disappointed us with the steady stream of nonsense coming out of T town. Keep up the good work Bammers. We need something to talk about.

Subject: The SEC as Middle Eastern Countries

ALABAMA:Saudi Arabia. Once a proud kingdom, torn up by fighting and surrounded by Iran and Iraq (see below), with an enemy in Al-Qaeda hell bent on bringing them down.

LSU: Iran. Current superpower in the region but it will all come crashing down because they have a highly functioning retard as a leader.

TENNESSEE: Iraq. Got a bunch of history but the country as a whole is going in the tank and they will kill themselves off before it's allover.

FLORIDA: Syria. Evil douche bags who will stoop to whatever level they need to win. No real history to speak of but thinks they are the cradle of civilization.

GEORGIA: Kuwait. Tons of riches and unrealized potential, but still vulnerable to Iraq.

AUBURN:Al Qaeda. No country just a movement of disgruntled fanatics who live to blow up those who are more fortunate. No other goal in life than to bring down the House of Saudi Arabia. Terrorizing the Arabians for 6years is the crowning achievement in their history. Signing day was a major setback to the movement. They'll be looking for a new leader soon.

ARKANSAS: Palestinian territories. No one really cares or worries about them unless they can be of some use (i.e. winning a battle once in a while against Iran that causes a bit of shake up in rankings)

MISSISSIPPI STATE: Qatar. Where the hell is Qatar?

OLE MISS: Afghanistan. Not much going for it, but hot women.

VANDERBILT: Israel. Just leave them alone for God's sake. What did they ever do to you?

KENTUCKY: Morocco. Not really part of the Middle East. Has other things to do than fight (or play football)

SOUTH CAROLINA: Libya. Had a charismatic leader in a land of nothingness. Will rattle his sword but knows he doesn't have a whole hell of a lot to back it up with.

Anon - that's great ... who wrote that really?

Billy - me either, but I do love to rub it in. I grew up in this mess. I suffered through nine years of listening to what a redneck idiot I, my parents, and my grandparents were. Payback is hell, you know?

Maybe it is because the first memories I have of the Iron Bowl are "Bo over the top", but I don't know what it is like to feel inferior to Bama. I never have cared how many NC's they claim to have nor do I care that the Bear coached there. Don't get me wrong, I hate them and their arrogant redneck fans, but I would prefer to beat LSU, UGA or UF than Bama. At least that is accomplishing something.

y'all are making my point for me. they think it's like it used to be. I'm saying that now, it's just fun to make fun of you.

Phred, I would prefer you not read that on any program. Ever.

Just let them be. You feeling the need to read that crap really says all that needs to be said. You still feel like the little brother in the state.

Just let it go. It is neither humorous, nor chiding. It's just kind of sad that you feel the need to blast that across the airwaves of someone that you dont even like listening to.

Vanderbilt isn't anything like Israel.

In six days' time back in 1967, Israel whipped Egypt, Jordan and Syria straight up. It also wipped Saudi Arabia and Iraq by proxy because they were providing assistance to the whipees.

Lesson learned: Don't mess with Israel.

That doesn't remind me of Vanderbilt.

I am really not sure why you felt the need to be nasty with me about it. Unless you are a Bammer, which is the only reason I could come up with.

I thought the same thing about Israel. Don't efe with Israel. They have the second best air force in the world, second only to the USA, who trained them to be the second best. Israel stands alone in the middle of millions of people who would prefer that Israel didn't exist. And yet it continues to do just that.

I like what Dye said in your article about kids commiting on national television and becoming delusional and having to make a hell of an adjustment. I thought he had a good point there, which has become somewhat of rarity for him lately.

To phred reading that on finebaum: I agree completely with Hip Hopanonymous. Don't do it dude. It doesn't make Auburn look any better. And about the "LOST" conversation from earlier. With EKO now out of the equation i'm a sayid fan. You can't wrong with an Iraqi interogator/torturor with a background in telecommunication equipment. Honestly, I really don't have time to sit around waiting to get connected to Finebaum.

But that's a pretty gracious attitude for somebody who likes to knife fight with Russian hookers.

But it's the thought that counts. That's what my mama always said anyway.

Sayid is a good character, too. I don't know how far along in the story you are, so I can't really get into a discussion about his merits.

As for dissing Jenna Fischer by even insinuating that she may not be as hot as Evangeline Lilly, well, that's why the world is a great place. You all can be wrong and that's OK. You're still loved here at the HABOTN ... even if your girl dated a hobbit.
