Auburn update, 6/30

Hey everyone. I'll doll this up later. Let's get to what happened this morning at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha.

Updated @ 9:15 p.m.
MONDAY NIGHT SYNOPSIS
  • Mark Gangloff finished second in the 100m breast and you know what that means: He's headed to Beijing. This will be his second Olympics.
  • Maggie Bird finished seventh in the 400m free finals. No dice.
  • Margaret Hoelzer finished third in the 100m back and has qualified for the finals. She was only .05 seconds behind superstar Natalie Coughlin for second. Finals roll on Tuesday.

MONDAY MORNING SYNOPSIS
  • Maggie Bird was the story as far as I'm concerned. She knocked more than 5 seconds off her qualifying time in the 400m free and made the finals, which roll tonight on USA Network (7 p.m.). The problem? Bird still is 4 seconds off Katie Hoff's pace. So it goes.
  • Auburn will have a lot of representation in the women's 100 back semis tonight. Four swimmers qualified. The top Tiger is Margaret Hoelzer, a backstroke specialist, who posted the third-best time. Margo McCawley, Erica Ewing and Erica Meissner also made the cut. Meissner was awesome. She knocked more than 2 seconds off her best time.
  • Two Auburn swimmers qualified for the men's 100 back, though they were right on the threshold.

The $64,000 question: Can the Olympics compete for interest in these parts with recruiting and pre-season football?

The other $64,000 question: Is the use of "the $64,000 question" still understood by the average Joe, or does anyone even remember that?

Yea I think it can compete especially now since the football news is pretty slow around here. The other $64,000 question will definately depend on the age of the Joe listening. Although there have been a lot of old game shows making combacks these days.

Now back to football...lol...Jay how many of our commits qualified? Or a better question may be who didn't make it?

Swimming?

Zzzzzz...

I was curious because I get into the idea of being the best in the world at something. To me, that's exciting to watch no matter what it is, except curling. Add the AU factor and it's twice as interesting to me.

Jay G ... I missed the broadcast. How did we do?

I generally don't get into swimming at all.

Here's why I'm into it this week:

a.) USA's swimming program is the world's best
b.) Auburn has several swimmers in serious contention to be on the US team
c.) I like the Olympics
d.) Football season is two months away
e.) Practice doesn't start for a month
f.) Recruiting has slowed for the moment

I think that covers it.

On the commitment tip: From what I can tell, all but four are on campus. I haven't personally seen all the newcomers or had a coach directly tell me that each of those kids are here.

I think OL Jermaine Johnson is the only kid, aside from the guys who were non-qualifiers all along, who probably won't make it.

You know what I just discovered? Auburn only has 14 seniors on the whole football team. The only ones that matter are Brad Lester, Rod Smith, Jason Bosley and Merrill Johnson. I am shocked. I would have thought we had more.

Chris evans, tyrone green, and james swinton are all starting or co-starters as well.

I'd definitely say Tyronne Green matters. James Swinton? I'll believe it when I see it.

This is plagerized from another site, but here goes.

1. Freddie Smooth-did not qualify (dnq)-don't know if he will go prep or Juco.

2. Onterrio McCalebb-dnq- Prep or Juco? One site says he still has test grades being reviewed.

3. Jermain Johnson-dnq- went prep last year, so I assume now to Juco.

4. Neiko Lipscomb-qualified, will be at AU for 2nd mini-mester (now?)

5. One More dnq-don't know who.

Good point Phred. Most people don't realize how young Auburn still is.

Mr. "One More" is Reggie Hunt.

So, Reggie Hunt will be on campus this Fall?

He's still TBA at this point.

Okay. Just curious. Thanks for the update.

So I hear that McCalebb is headed to Hargrave and F. Smooth, K. Adams and B. Smith are headed to JUCO. What's the word on Marcus Jemison?

12:42 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Smooth, Adams and Smith were signed knowing they were headed elsewhere. So that's no surprise.

McCalebb was a huge reach ... meaning there was a 5% chance he would make it. I think he fell into the 95%.

Jemison and Hunt are the two I'm still monitoring
