Your Daily Fix, 7/16
BREAKING NEWS: Auburn has agreed to play Furman on 11/7/2009. I'm sure that gets you season-ticket holders all excited.
MORE BREAKING NEWS: It appears that Auburn has agreed to accept former Indiana forward Brandon McGee as a transfer for the 2008-09 season. The 6-foot-7 Chicago native was kicked off the IU team in May for (quoting the IU release) "academic and team guideline negligence." What does that mean? I have no idea.
If McGee enrolls, he won't be eligible to play until November 2009 because of NCAA transfer guidelines. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining.

Hey everyone. Auburn added a 20th commitment last night -- isn't that just insane? -- but I'm leading off the HABOTN today with Larry Blakeney. He was in town Tuesday talking with the Kiwanis Club and had a lot of interesting things to say about Auburn offensive coordinator Tony Franklin.
Franklin spent the past two seasons at Troy.
Here is today's story: Blakeney on Franklin: The Tigers will thrive
I love the part where Blakeney, who was involved in some NCAA scrutiny years ago, quickly deemed Franklin "clean" and free of any responsibility for Kentucky's recruiting shadiness of 1999 and 2000. If you can't trust Blakeney on those kinds of issues, who can you trust?
Auburn is now up to 20 commitments. Multi-talented player Jamie Collins of Meadville, Miss., said Tuesday night that he's planning to sign with the Tigers in February.
He played quarterback and safety in high school last season. He's considered a college prospect at wideout or linebacker. He attended Auburn's final summer camp last week as a linebacker, so it's reasonable to assume that's where the Tigers will play him.
Things can and do change. Remember when DeRon Furr was a quarterback?

Thanks for the updates Jay. Do you have any feelings about the new commit either way? Did you see him at the last camp? He seems like a solid player with good size/speed. I have developed alot of faith in our coaching staff's ability to evaluate talent.
I was in Cincinnati for the last camp, so I didn't see Collins. I saw one clip back in June. It safe to say he made a great impression at the camp ...
It's really interesting that the 6'2" 210 LB from GA, Nigel Mitchell-Thornton, didn't get an offer from us at camp. How would you characterize AU's recruiting mentality? It seems that they recruit athletic players that could play different positions as needed as much as they recruit for specific positions.
They're remarkably aware of what they need. They miss a few like everyone else, but it's clear that these coaches understand the kinds of kids (and athletes) required to thrive at Auburn.
The Tigers' slew of early commitments is a really intriguing development. How many of these kids will reconsider their options when other big schools come calling in Oct/Nov/Dec?
I hope that nature will run it's course with out having to de-offer some guys later on. I know some coaches practice that philosophy. I hope we don't start. We'll just have to see I guess.
Auburn has de-offered guys before. They generally help the kid craft his own parachute.
A perfect example is Dequan Bembry, who committed to Auburn during the summer of 2006. The Tigers kinda changed their mind on him and helped lead him to Marshall.
He's now a redshirt freshman CB for the Herd. No problems.
It means he didn't want to play for the new guy.
I'm sure that's it.
we were getting reamed today over the Furman deal. What is wrong with Jay Jacobs? What in the world was he thinking?
Everybody plays a I-AA school now and again. I don't think it's a big deal.
