Your Daily Fix, 7/21
Hey everyone. The SEC preseason poll (coaches version) was released earlier today. As you'd expect with coaches and their sometimes curious evaluation processes, there were some surprises.
Coaches can't vote for their own players. I understand the thinking behind that, though that means "sleeper" guys lose attention in favor of their more ballyhooed counterparts. That's how a guy like Antonio Coleman falls to the third team.
Commentary follows.

You already know how I feel about Coleman on the third-team defense. I think he's 95% as good as Sen'Derrick -- meaning he's one of the best linemen in the nation -- though clearly I'm in the minority there.
No Wes Byrum? No excuse. How does that happen? The kid was 17-of-23 last season. He was 14-of-15 inside of 40. Colt David is an excellent kicker, no doubt, and Ryan Succop is good. Leigh Tiffin? Seriously?
Are Ben Tate and Terry Grant really the best guys behind Knowshon Moreno? Wow.
Ricky Jean-Francois: I told you so.
I'll betcha $50 cash money that Tommy Trott makes the post-season list. He has more talent than the three guys named above and now he'll have a legit opportunity to show it.
Glad to see Tyronne Green getting some love. He's a really good player. I wish he was more open with reporters because he's a fascinating talent totally deserving of more publicity.

I didn't expect AU to get many 1st Teamers on Offense though I am a little surprised by some of the 2nd and 3rd team choices. At this point, it's all speculation though. Seasons can change with a tweaked ankle during two-a-days.
Antonio Coleman on the third team is a joke.
Big time. And I agree with your Ben Tate assessments as well.
Lester scores every 6th or 7th time he touches the ball. The guy is electric. If Mario Fannin can stop fumbling, he's got the same potential.
Don't know who's going to replace Lester after this year. I haven't seen much from the freshmen.
Also, I see the kickers from LSU and SC as tops int he league, but there's no way Leigh Tiffin is above Wes Byrum.
I forgot about Wes Byrum! Goodness gracious.
I like Succop a whole lot, too.
Tommy Trott "has more talent" than Cornelius Ingram? That's some Phillip Marshall-style Aubie-ism right there, Mr. Tate.
Let's run the numbers:
Ingram, 2007: 34 catches, 508 yards, 7 touchdowns
Trott, 2007: 4 catches, 35 yards, 0 TDs
Ingram, 06-07 combined: 64 catches, 888 yards, 8 TDs
Trott, 06-07 combined: 14 catches, 129 yards, 2 TDs
That's a big, big difference, and please don't tell me you're going to blame all of it on poor Al Borges!
So where's the evidence for all Trott's extra talent, which apparently is so vast as to make up for a 50-catch, 750-yard and 6-touchdown disparity in favor of Ingram?
Until Tommy Trott produces in September, October or November, as opposed to his usual A-Day heroics in March, spare me the hype.
Oh, don't put me in the position of having to defend Tommy Trott. I've been harder on him than anyone. Just ask the people who e-mail me about my alleged anti-Trott bias!
He's a gifted receiver who has excellent speed for his size. Working as a would-be slot guy, he'll have a chance to be a superb player in 2008.
I didn't say he was better than Cornelius Ingram. I said Trott would be on the post-season list. He'll have the numbers.
I hate to quibble with you, JGT, because I'm a certified fan of the HABOTN. But this is what you said:
"I'll betcha $50 cash money that Tommy Trott makes the post-season list. He has more talent than the three guys named above and now he'll have a legit opportunity to show it."
Cornelius Ingram = 1/3 of "the three guys named above," right?
And I apologize for comparing you to Phil Masrhall...he stands alone in his Aubieness.
Trott has a lot of promise. I think this will be his year. I could sit around and make lame prognostications like "Auburn will win at least six games" or "Kodi Burns is a faster runner than Brandon Cox."
I try to look beyond that a tad. I'm cool with taking some grief for it.
Sweeting ... only thing I can figure is that we must have found out about something not too good that has nothing to do with football.
Comparing catch production from a TE in a power I to that of one in a spread has to be the epitome of apples to oranges. Not saying that Trott is better, just saying that there is no way to know.
phred I'd hate to speculate about a young man's character when there has been no evidence to support it.
Yea, Phred, I don't think that's the case.
I was just figurin'! Geesh! But then again, how do you know? I don't think we would announce that kind of thing do you? No, because it wouldn't be a very nice thing to do. But can I not speculate here among the brethren? Dude.
Anyway, you girls have a good night.
Last year's offense was a by-product of two things. We had a QB who could manage games, but couldn't throw the home-run ball and we had a great defense that could keep it close.
I think we all know Tubs told Borges not to push it after like the 3rd game and so we played super-conservative. I'm curious as to what actually ended that relationship though.
Using the logic of those that voted, where is Brad Lester? Fiddlesticks, where is Tristan Davis?
Terry Grant? Ben is not so dramatic although I can name a few better (last year). Tristan is the best return man in the leauge when healthy. Would anybody doubt that? He was injured last year as was Terry Grant AND Tray Blackmon.
Phred....Les miles hat 10 3/8
I don't think that's enough. You couldn't fit a 5 gallon bucket over that head.
There would be alot of air in that head then, because you know he doesnt have much of a brain!
Completely agree about tristan davis's return ability two years ago. Maybe this year with byrum and tristan davis we can take advantage of kicking off from the 30 instead of getting worked over by the new rule (south flordia game).
I think Zac Etheridge will end up on one of the All SEC teams as well.
I think Trott will have a good year but i think Gabe McKenzie is more of a complete tight end. McKenzie could be more useful as a blocker/receiver.
I just figured Tristan's omission was due to him being absent in 2007. Seems reasonable.
Ron, glad you brought up and out Etheridge. He'll receive accolades soon enough if he continues where he left off last year. He was Jay's most productive guy on Will's point system through much of '07. And he's a safety.
