Bonus video: Tuberville from 8/11
Here is a little sumpin' extra.
Tuberville on the Tigers. The emphasis here is on offense. I'll piece together a defense-themed clip tomorrow.

Thanks for your hard work this year Jay. For those of us watching our budget your reports have been outstanding. I don't feel like I've missed a thing. I click your bookmark several times a day now.
Thanks
Steve
Thanks a lot.
The HABOTN may have a little less content than pay sites, but it's also twice as free. I like free.
I think Tristan Davis will me our biggest role player on offense this year. All I get is video clips of what he (partially) does in practice. But everything he does in pretty much perfect. The guy was a fierce head hunting safety two and three years ago. They assigned all kinds of "code reds" to him in the '06 LSU game. He's was detroying people (and himself in the process).
Never understood why they pulled him out of that position>
Also, I've heard much talk about his lack of receiving ability. According to the film that's bull. And he's never dropped a kick off reception.
I'm posting this to say Tristan Davis is my pick to be Auburn's most valuable offensive role player this season. You all are welcome to leave your bets on the table. In fact, I'd love to see what you think.
I'm sorry. I forgot to add my Tuberville comment.
If I had a dollar for every time Tuberville said, "we've got a chance to get better", I think I would finally have that boat I always wanted.
I'm doubling down on Mario. But I'll put a side bet on Tristan.
I definately don't remember Tristan Davis ever playing safety in a game especially the LSU game. He probably got some mop up duty but I think "The Legend of Tristan Davis the Head Hunting Safety" was a bit exaggerated. I would be shocked if Davis touches the ball more than 3 times a game. That being said I think he will make all-sec as a kick returner, he is the best we have had since Tim Carter.
I don't know what specifies your most valuable role player category but Brad lester is the best skill player on offense and if he gets hurt we're in trouble. And robert dunn will lead the team in receiving are my guesses.
Well now that i think about Davis will dominate LaMO and TN Martin so those games don't count.
I think Rod Smith is the best skill player on offense. One guy's opinion.
Oh, and I think Slaughter will be the No. 2 receiver this season ... behind Smith.
Ron, Tristan was no mop up safety. He was number 2 on the depth chart on two different occasions. He got hurt in the LSU game I referred to.
Brad Lester is a feature player. Everybody knows he scores every third or fourth time he touches it.
I pick Rod Smith with Slaughter second as well. Rod's as sure as Sunday and I think Slaughter is one of the guys that just needs the ball.
BTW, Tristan Davis was a free safety in '05 and '06 before being moved full time to offense in '07. He was and is a very physical player. I personally thought he was too much of a human cannon ball as a safety. Somebody was going to get hurt. Either him or the object he was flying in to.
Wanna see Tristan's work as a mop up tailback? Youtube AU/UK '04. Last year Tristan was on the verge of being the #1 tailback before Trott stepped on his toe and broke it, killing his season.
*AU/UK '05 rather
The most valuable guy on the team is sometimes the player the other team forgets about. How imposing is Tommy Trott?
I say he has a great year drawing the worst DB on the other team covering him.
Is anybody else sick of talking about what they think is gonna happen?
I mean, I''m getting on my own nerves.
Dude, let's play some football already!
We've got a long way to go, Phred.
My guess is that Rod Smith will be the second leading receiver. But if he is the best skill player on offense we might not be as talented as I once thought. I mean he is above average but I got to put lester, fannin and tate (and kodi burns the runner if that counts) ahead of him.
And i hope slaughter does well but I see him more of a deep threat once or twice a game. He doesn't have the go over the middle frame to me.
mm hmm... And tristan davis was not going to be the #1 tailback last year even with lester suspended no matter what rivals.com told you.
Here's what I think ... ummm yeah - I've got nothin'
Thanks for the coverage, Jay. I look forward to each day's reporting. Like Phred, I'm almost beside myself in anticipation for the games to begin, but I'm like that most years around this time.
Even so, I'll admit to having some guilty optimism about the coming year. It looks like the team has the talent and skill set to really do well. As for MVP - my bet is on the starting QB (whichever one wins). In this offense, it's not the weapons, but the generalship that'll make the difference.
Ron, I'm almost positive you're not Eddie Gran unless you're really, really weird. Rivals doesn't just "say" stuff. We're talking quotes last year and this year from Eddie Gran (the person/the coach).
Also, why is Rod Smith the second leading receiver after being the leading receiver two seasons in a row? You don't think a QB wants to throw it to the most experienced WR anymore?
I'm with Ron on the Tristan Davis issue, the guy has a great game against a 3-8 Kentucky team and he is a legend. He may end up being critical part of our offense but if you are going to judge that off of that Kentucky game than we should be screaming for Blake Field to come back becasue he had a hell of a game against Western Kentucky that year.
I agree if he stays healthy our kick return game will be its best in years.
Jay, I don't feel like typing for the next two hours about how much better your coverage is than Rivals. Thanks
The machine never sleeps. I guess practice will be indoors today? What have you heard there ... Jay G?
Who said Tristan was a legend? I believe we have some Finebaum callers in this forum.
Mornin' Phred.
What's up Billy J? No work for me today. Rain. I like the no work part, but that also means no money, and I don't like that part.
Jay, Thanks again that was the best video yet. My thoughts on the difference maker will be both quarterbacks... i think that we will be much improved at that position with the ability to stretch the field and get people in the open field the ball to make a move and get some explosive plays.... i'm geeked....
The HABOTN has much respect for the boys at Rivals.com. They definitely qualify as HOTTIES: B-Matt, J Lee and the unsung Mark Johnson.
I know Rod Smith isn't the splashiest talent, but he is a very good player. He's quite an athlete. He's probably the most underappreciated player I've ever covered at Auburn. I'm guessing that's because he arrived as a walk-on four years ago.
Tristan D. has his moments. I don't think he's nearly as skilled as Tate and Lester. Davis' claim to fame is an incredible speed-to-bulk ratio. He's a thick dude. At one time, I thought he was the team's fastest guy. He's probably not in the top five now.
Jay, you have the sweetest adjectives in the biz. "Splashiest". That was awesome.
Also, props for recognizing the guys at Rivals for their work. I appreciate what they do and I appreciate your sort of alternative view. Little more intimacy with the players through your eyes and ears.
And you nailed it for both Rod and Tristan. Rod is an awesome basketball player. Smooth as butter and great, great hands. Tristan is a worthy athlete and a" do anything for the team" guy. PPL and Adams have him beat. I'd like to see TD and Swinton square off though.
Swinton would wear him out.
I really like the way Rivals.com handles business. That's the way I would do it -- bright graphics and tons of video and bullet points.
