Practice Eight (8/8)
Hey everyone. This is going to be a lightning-round list because I have to get back. My wife's anniversary gift is being installed today. It's a Sirius receiver. Can't miss that. Eleven years on Saturday.
Here's what You Need To Know:
Here are your results from today's pass-rush drill. Keep in mind that defenders have the advantage here. I occasionally award an "E" for even ... which generally happens when a defensive lineman gets a good push, but is forced too far outside.
NOTE: Check out how many reps Derrick Lykes is getting inside. The coaches obviously are intrigued.

Mike Blanc and Byron Isom go at it during the pass-rush drill.
Hot Carter and Lee Ziemba go at it during the pass-rush drill. Carter tried to burn by on the outside and Ziemba cut him off at the pass. Excellent work from Ziemba.
Here's a shot from team drills. A couple of those DLs are getting up there to deflect that pass. That's Raven Gray on the outside and Sen'Derrick Marks inside.

Here's what You Need To Know:
- Another safety is down. Marcus Jemison, a freshman, injured an ankle mid-way through the practice. He was whisked away to the Athletic Complex pretty quickly. I didn't see the play. Some scribes who did said Jemison was involved in a scuffle immediately preceding the injury.
- WR Montez Billings played really well today. He caught two tough deep balls during 1-on-1s and held on for a touchdown catch during 11-on-11s. He crashed into Terrell Zachery after catching the ball. Billings was injured (not seriously) yet still hung on.
- DT Sen'Derrick Marks unloaded a huge hit on WR Mario Fannin during 11-on-11s. Fannin caught a screen pass and Marks was waiting. The hit prompted a mass celebration from the defensive sideline.
- DT Zach Clayton performed well during the pass-rush drills. He's really violent with those arms. I think he can work well as a third-down rusher from one of the inside positions. He gets around people.
- CB Jerraud Powers grabbed an unusual interception during 1-on-1s. He initially locked down WR Quindarius Carr, who somehow broke away and cleared a few feet of space. The pass from Chris Todd was on target, but Carr didn't secure it properly. Powers snatched the ball off Carr's hip. Easy.
- Scrimmage tomorrow. The event is closed to both the media and general public. It's allegedly supposed to begin at 9:30 a.m.
- I'll post today's pass-rush results around 3:30 p.m.

Thanks for the update.
Happy Anniversary!
so you think the third down pass rush group will be coleman, carter, marks and clayton? That could work out pretty well.
Jay, haven't heard much about the linebackers. Bynes still doing as good as he did in the spring?
That's what I see. I'm obviously not a coach. Clayton isn't a known quantity per se, so maybe the coaches have other plans.
I don't think of Blanc as a pass-rush guy. Same for Ricks, though he's more refined than Blanc.
Chris Todd has slow feet. Also, I don't think we'll be seeing Brad Lester execute a half back pass.
Yeah, Blanc and the bull rush is not a very deceptive pass rush move. Jake ricks seems quick for one or two steps but i just don't see him getting after the quarterback.
Interesting you mention that Crudup. I didn't see much of troy play last year but looking at their stats they ran some wild plays. Their best receiver was 4-4 passing with 2 tds and their Quarterback had 2 catches 1 td. Borges did some crazy stuff the first two years he was at Auburn then proceeded to suck the next two years. It could get interesting this year.
It could get even crazier. When this Cameron Kenney kid gets here, we could have a Fannin pass to the punter (who's also a WR)
I'd expect to see a lot of innovation this season.
Paul Rhoads...
"Aggressive? Yes. Hero? No"
We have one of the top, if not THE top, LB corps in the SEC this year.
We have a superstar in Blackmon. And we have two budding stars in Stevens and Bynes. Bynes is becoming a special player. Merrill Johnson, Courtney Harden, and one of the more underrated LBs in the leauge, Chris Evans, are solid and experienced depth that any program would love to have.
Eltoro!! You must roll the 'r' for an extended amount of time when you say his name moving forward. I will try to have the announcers do the same.
What's the deal with another fight - another injury?!?
"Gettin' after it."
Fights happen every day on every team in the SEC. Many fights happen after sessions are closed. AU allows more open session that many SEC schools. Reporters are pointing the fights out at AU b/c of the Furr tussle. Go back to the day of the Furr fight and rea all of the reporter's accounts. Only a couple of guys even mentioned it and no one thought it to be a big deal. Now....every fight is mentioned.
Hoopie provides the correct answer again.
Not sure that Craig Stevens is a budding star. He's not a stereotypical strong-side linebacker, that's for sure.
I haven't seen enough from Bynes to get a feel for his ceiling.
Tray Blackmon is a stud against the run. He's hit or miss as a pass defender. Still a really good player overall.
I feel the exact same way about stephens. I think strongside linebacker is the weakspot on the defense. How many snaps did stephens get last year? How many times did you hear his name get called out for making a play? I wish that Bynes would get a shot at strong side. I also wish we would blitz tray blackmon more off the edge.
Craig was of course a freshman last year. And he was banged up pretty good all year. He was really limited with only one good shoulder. Look for a big year from him.
Oh yea, losing Bo Harris sucks.
Hoopie, also when you read those account the day of and after the Furr episode...everybody admitted that they didn't see anything go down (scribes I mean). Ray Mellick had an interesting SPIN on the story by suggesting Furr was bullied out of Auburn. Go back to the archives here if it's possible. You'll see plenty of fanfare for Furr's bullying of all players including a notorious body slam of Merrill Johnson, who is no small fry.
Furr wasn't a weak little freshman. It's my opinion that he was a little socially inept and he probably was victim of enrolling early and living in solitude too long at the ripe age of 17 or 18.
Yeah, Melick's muckraking column was hilarious - 5'11" Etheridge bullying the "weak" (Melick's words) 6'3" Furr? Yeah, sure... You spin it however you need to for your puppetmasters Ray.
