Prelude to Practice Five (8/6)

Hey everyone. Practice is expected to start around 4:45 p.m. 4:15 today, which is a nice change of pace. The first hour of the 3:45 runs had been really hot. Now that hour is gone. I'd highly recommend you visit practice today -- it'll be the first full-pads workout of the season.

I had a few HOTTIES email me about DeRon Furr and what I thought about this whole deal. I haven't really formulated an opinion. I probably won't because it's unclear what exactly happened. The intramural fields are vast. I spent most of my time watching skill players and offensive line. The Furr Incident happened on the defensive field. I didn't get a good look at what happened.

S Zac Etheridge made it clear that Furr was roughed up in an effort to correct what players felt was a cavalier attitude. On one hand, yeah, that not exactly textbook sportsmanship. On the other hand, it's football and they're kids and stuff like this happens.

I'm undecided.

Here are a couple Things You Need To Know that I missed last night. I'm getting old. It happens:
  • I saw scouts from three NFL teams at practice. They were busy scribbling notes and looking like Secret Service agents. It's difficult to tell which players they're assessing. The Lions, Buccaneers and Falcons were represented.

  • Former Auburn golfer (and current professional) Jason Dufner attended practice Tuesday, chatting up Tuberville about ... what else?

  • Raven Gray is struggling. He was berated frequently during the first three days by position coach Terry Price. Gray just isn't quite up to speed with Auburn's practice protocol. He didn't take as much criticism Tuesday, but he didn't perform very well in the pass-rush drill. Not sure what to make of him right now. Definitely a work in progress.

  • WR Charles Olatunji is out with a fractured collarbone suffered Monday. The play happened 5 feet in front of me. He went up, caught the ball over a defender and landed awkwardly on his left shoulder. The ball popped out. Olatunji then began moaning. It was painful to watch.

Didn't see where Jay was being snide. And I'm not being partial to him just because he's the host here. Furr got beatdown no matter how you dress it up. He was embarrassed big time. Don't care how he may have been wounded physically. He was singled out and humiliated. Beatdown noted.

1 DeRon's grades are sturggling
2 they didn't offer his brother LeRon a scholarship
3 he is doubting that he will get any PT

He was promised a chance to compete at quarterback, too.

He doesn't think that happened.

Why do kids like Furr think that these coaches do this for some other reason then what's best for them? they probably saw something that led them to believe he wouldnt be a QB. I doubt it was personal, just what was best for him and the team.

Anyone remember Courtney Denson (I think that was his name) from a few years ago? He came in as a QB and was moved to DB. then he transferred to USF to be a QB, and they made him a.....WR.

Leo Caron as a QB, too. So was Fannin. So was Courtney Taylor. Carson got NFL time because of his move and so will Fannin. I can tell you why Furr isn't a QB. Did you watch his HS film or did you watch any spring ball? He's a great athlete but not a D1 QB. Horribly inaccurate and horrible mechanics. Jarmon Fortson played jump ball with him in HS. That's easy.

As far as the "beatdown" goes. That kind of stuff happens anywhere in life. If you're not pulling your weight someone is gonna administer some discipline. whether it be a boss, parent, upperclassman, whatever. Granted, sometimes it's more violent than others, but football is a violent sport. Deal with it or move on. I guess he chose to move on.

Yep, Fannin, Taylor, the list is endless. Some kids take to the change and realize what's best. Other's think that the coaches are out to get them, or let their egos get in the way.

Ok everyone its time to move on. I am tired of hearing about the while Furr thing. There are many more things to worry about like who is take on the role of Aaron Savage. I know that Mcfaddon will step in nicely, but who be that other role player...nickle back. I belive that Hood could be that guy.

From all I'm hearing done count on Ryan Williams.he doesn't like working ouÞ much either. I see Thorpe getting thrown into the fire and going through the trials of SEC ball. Good to have a leader like Powers around. Absolutely no concern at the safety position where Furr was to reside.

FYI -- practice has been moved up to 4:15 today if you are planning to attend.

I am skipping my daughter's open house tonight ... much to my discredit. Usual blogging schedule remains in tact.

Also, I'll be skipping the early practice Thursday. My top editors have insisted that I cover Tuberville's appearance in Montgomery on Thursday morning. He's the keynote speaker at a PSIF luncheon or something like that.

It's out of my hands.

Definitely in the dog house, though not in the kitchen. Only in the foyer. It's not as bad there.

My last comment on it:

I came up with a nickname for our recent departure ...
