Getting things started, 9/6
Hey everyone. It's game day. I'm happy. You're happy. You could be happier than me at kickoff, though, because you can drink. I'm on the clock. I knew that going in, but you still can raise one to the HABOTN if you so choose.
Here is some new shizzle for you to ingest.
My weekly column has a Run-DMC flava.
IN TODAY'S EDITIONS OF THE ADVERTISER
9/6: My weekly "First and 10" column: An Auburn vs. Run-DMC mash-up
9/6: Franklin fine-tunes QB rotation
IN PREVIOUS EDITIONS OF THE ADVERTISER
9/4: Doolittle sees much better days
9/3: Todd gets starting nod at QB
9/2: Tigers hunt far and wide for wideouts
SCHEDULE UPDATE: Josh Moon and I will be heading up there around 8. I'm aiming to get some Tiger Walk footage and other stuff before the game. I'll be around these parts full-time after 11 or so.

Josh Moon put out a pretty ridiculous column.
They've got a passing offense that can't pass. That, my friends, is the very definition of trouble.
(Another cliche of the spread offense by a guy that's as finicky and fickle as they come. Disregarding Texas Tech, anybody else who runs this offense checks in at about 50/50 pass to run.)
Maybe things will get worked out in the coming weeks, but it's going to be very difficult given that AU receivers are dropping like flies. Passing offenses rarely work when the guys throwing the ball can't throw and the guys catching the ball can't catch.
(Auburn lost A receiver. A true freshman who has yet to run one play from scrimmage.)
I want you all to think about something (and I'm not predicting this will happen, just tossing out a hypothetical scenario): Imagine if this offense doesn't work and a change has to be made. Do you realize how long it will take to overcome the recruiting that has taken place the last two years? Auburn has a bunch of players who are only good in this system. If you toss out the spread, there's just not much call for a 5-foot-7 receiver, much less eight of them.
(Two years of recruiting? Does this clown know Al Borges coached the last Iron Bowl? They're only half way through their first year of "spread recruiting".)
I think Moon has got some decent points. Franklin claims to set up the run with the pass. If Auburn can't pass that's a rather large problem. And he definately hit the nail on the head with 5' 7" receviers. There is going to be a big set back if we ever switch away from the spread.
I would like someone to answer an obvious question. If a 5'8 guy (and we have a mix of short and tall by the way) can catch a pass against a LB, CB, and S in the spread, why can't he catch a pass against THE SAME men in another offense?
This game is mano y mano. You beat the man in front of you. Strength, quickness, speed, elusiveness ... whatever ... just figure out a way to beat him.
The spread gets people in space, phred. Those small types of receivers excel in space. In the West Coast receivers often have to fight to get open and catch the ball in traffic much more suited to a bigger receiver. But the main thing is there is alot more blocking involved for receivers in other offenses something the bigger guys definately have an advantage in.
blocking. that's an argument i'll buy. the getting open in space thing, not buying it yet.
Josh, and I like him a lot, is all about getting people flustered. He takes highly dubious premises and defends them for effect.
He's doing that here.
1. It's a passing offense. If you think otherwise, you're going to be disappointed.
2. You have one WR out for the year and two others are hurt. "Dropping like flies" doesn't imply that eight guys are out for the year. It means -- at least the way I used it -- that several went down with injuries in recent days.
3. If I'm not mistaken, Franklin's presence had an impact on the most recent AU class and there are 437 one-star recruits currently committed. That's two years.
You can believe whatever you like about this offense -- and I've said before that I thought it would work -- but I'm of the opinion, after the first game, that there could be serious problems. Especially considering the receiver situation.
If there's a big turnaround today and things go well the rest of the year, what I wrote means nothing and you all can spend your free time sending me "You're a moron" e-mails. But if it looks today like it looked last week, it's a legit discussion.
g money ... wave to me and scotty b. we are down here in section 12 about three rows up.
crudup ... where you at?
Josh, doesn't look like a "passing" offense again today. What's up? Also, to you and Ron, what 5'7" receivers are you referring to? Again, PPL is injured and out of commission for the year. Where are the others? Are you referring to 3 commmitments, aka verbal pledges? Heavens, James, Stallworth? 5'9"/5'10" guys yes. But they're faster than anybody Auburn has on the field today and it's not even close.
#2 Billings and Swinton are back. Again, and last time, only PPL is right. Facts, anyone?
Your #3 piont makes absolutely NO sense. Jay hit the nail on the head. Indulge yourself, cuz. That's the best you got?
crudup you might want to take a little lesson in sarcasm
Ron, not necessary. Sarcasm is fine for color if that's all you have. You may want to take a lesson in stand down and fight you own battles.
Oh i'm sorry where you not talking to me when you said "Also to you and ron"
Feel free to respond with "what's up?" and "cuz" like you did in your comments a few hours earlier
