Chattin' it up, 10/1

Hey everyone. Sorry for the late start today. I didn't get home from Auburn until really late and I've been arguing with LG about my broken TV for a while. It's now in the hands of a local repair shop, which said they "may be able to" get this situation handled by November.

November. Yes.

It's going to be a tough few months. Maybe I'll test drive a TV from BestBuy ... and sell the repaired unit later to recoup a big chunk of the cost. Ideas?

For the record, I love my LG TV and I'm assuming my little problem isn't indicitave of LG as a whole.

On to Auburn affairs...

  • I still don't have the real scoop on what happened with CeCe Sims last night. It was pretty terrifying to walk up to the police station and see an assistant coach crying her eyes out. I was worried that we were involved with a really sad situation. The APD since has closed the investigation. No criminal activity was associated with Sims' (brief) disappearance. That's a wrap.

  • I'm sure The HOTTIES already are aware, but I penned a little something on Joshua Bynes for Wednesday's editions. I decided to get away from the offensive issues for a brief moment and focus on one of the reasons Auburn's defense has been so nasty of late. I'll get back to Tony Franklin tomorrow.

  • One funny item of interest: Tuberville was talking yesterday about attending Lee-Scott Academy's JV game the other night. Tucker Tuberville is the quarterback. The elder Tuberville said he sat in the stands and booed the refs all night. He was joking. Or was he? I gotta get out there one of these nights to see it all unfold.

  • I'm planning to build another video today. I have several stories due this afternoon for our weekend "GameDay" edition, so I'll give you a more solid schedule update when it becomes available.

back to the topic at hand, J.Bynes/T.Blackmon.....

so, let me clear this up, since Josh been in there we have had way fewer 'communication' errors on defense. also, it's pretty obvious that even with a healthy Tray Blackmon they don't trust him to change positions b/c of it being 'detrimental' to him (and our defense). i know JB has played very well, but what does that say about Blackmon? he's a head-hunter who's not good for much else? am i reading too much into this? help.

I think that's pretty much it.

He doesn't like pass coverage. He's not very good at it. Tray is a missile, pure and simple.

He's always one hit away from making the other team wonder if football is really worth it. He scares people. That's worth something.

We have two very good MLBs. One stops the run well, the other covers the pass well. I don't think we should read into it any more than that. No way Tubs is downing the kid in the paper.

Overall, I think we have very five good LBs, although Bynes is the only one with enough size to play his current position in the NFL. Tray is a physical freak but when it comes to technique and instinct, Evans and Stevens both look better from where I sit. Tray can be a pro if he learns to play outside. Either way, I guess it's "detrimental" to him to play MLB for the last year and a half and switch right in the middle of the year.

So the only way Tray is a full time player is that if other teams are playing using the flying wedge or something like the Notre Dame box?

Darrell Griffith used to get the keys to open Crawford Gym and would work out by himself until the wee hours working on his ball handling and shooting. Jerry Eaves used to wear a welder's apron to do his work outs to get better. The result was a national championship in 1980.

Not liking something means you should work on it even harder.

You know, I am not completely convinced this guy is really denny crum.

And I am even more convinced that Ron Mexico is not actually Michael Vick.

And that phred dude is not phred, either. I have narrowed it down to being either Jason Campbell or Scott Baio, but definitely not phred.

Tuberville really likes Tray, both as a player and as an evolved person.

Tray 08 is nothing like Tray 06 off the field. It's like two different people.

I like what Tommy is doing trying to CTF to modify a little.

Let's take a historical perspective. When my mentor and former UCLA coach, the Wizard of Westwood, won his first championship in 1964, he utilized an uptempo game with the 2-2-1 full court zone press.

In 1965, he decided that the personnel he had returning were better suited for the 1-2-1-1 full court press. So he utilized that to win his second national championship.

When Lew Alcindor and Bill Walton were in the line up, he decided that a 1-1-3 or 3-1-1 half court trap was better suited for his personnel and won 5 national championship with them.

You get the picture. He still was uptempo and aggressive, but he used and perfected what was best for his personnel that he had. He recruited players for his "UCLA" system, but made changes that best utilized his talent.

That is what Tommy is trying, I believe, to get CTF to see.

He can still be no huddle and uptempo, but does it have to be all shotgun all the time. The short answer is no.

okay, while I understood all of that by Denny, why and how he knew it is beyond me.

All the Bama talk at the watercooler today was that Tommy was scrapping the spread. That is not how I read his comments.
