Friday overflow/HoF update

Once a blog post hits 200 comments, it throws new comments on a second page.

That's confusing.

So I'm creating this thread. That way we don't get lost.

Carry on.

HALL OF FAME UPDATE:
Let's all congratulate Michael and Cory for being added to the "Notable Newcomers" list. Well done!

I really would like some help here if anybodies got any so here it is again

aight Hotties I need some advice. At my job I feel like my boss is driving the store into the ground. He has an extremely high turn over(i almost quit) and we lost our fifth outside salesman today. I really want the best for the store and of course I want to make more money. Neither is happening as long as the store continues to stink. I talk to my bosses boss on a regular basis and he has asked me to keep him posted on my bosses status. So here we are another salesman gone and we are continuing to sink. Do I throw him under the bus to the big boss? My boss is a helluva salesman and won't go sale cause he is the "Branch Manager" so he doesn't think he has too. I jsut need help Hotties. I am not in a position to really take his job and I know I still have more to learn but this guy is sinking us and frankly i'm tired of it..any help?

The board of trustees has a big decision to make. Do you give the guy a couple of seasons to fix it or do you bring in a new fired up coach to grap the players and get them fired up right away.

How much is that worth to them.

7:22 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Tennessee gave Fulmer time to "fix" his issues and you see how that went.

Surely that's going to affect Auburn's decision-making.

7:22 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Also, just going back through some parts of the WVU game ... Auburn's defense doesn't change its look very often.

Remember how Muschamp was always changing fronts and trying to trick offenses?

Rhoads is on the other end of that spectrum. I'm no coach, but it seems like being so basic sets you up for serial exploitation.

7:24 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Jay, what's your over/under on Fulmer's time left at UT?

7:24 PM
Blogger Monica said...

It's fun watching the WVU folks defend their fans on the Marshall WVU smack board. Someone has posted several of the stories that have been written about their bad behavior at the Auburn game.

7:25 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I'm sure that's what Auburn is looking at right now.

They also might thinking that they need to get some calls made early and decide if they are going to keep Tub or not, because they don't want coaches to have to make a decision between Auburn and Tennessee, because as much as I hate to admit it, most coaches will pick an opening at UT over Auburn.

Blogger wartiger said...

I am assured a position in the company regardless unless something dramatic happens but see...this is hard without names so I just wanna know if it is a good idea to go to the big boss and tell him what I think the problem is..my boss is a great salesman just not a manager..i don't know he's not a bad guy just a poor decision maker and a detriment to the store in my opinon. I'll say this a little more experience and I KNOW I could do better..

I'll go back through the process and get back to you monica unless someone smarter than me let's you know first on how to help a HOTTIE out and tell her how to make HABTON one of the blogs she's following on her profile. Don't mean to get off football here but i know that there are some pretty sucessful people that blog here so figured I'd give it a shot

it's a he kris..I think you were asking that. My boss and my bosses boss have been working together longer than I have been at this store. So my bosses boss is just to nice to pull the trigger or he would have done it a long time ago. Other "Branch Managers" have been fired for less than what my boss has done to this store. I know this "my bosses boss" stuff is confusing so thanks kris..any job is what you make of it. I sometimes forget that logic

Another thing to consider here is CTT's contract. As a university, Auburn should not sign long term contracts with coaches they don't want to keep. To fire him now, would say that it was a bonehead move signing him to a long term contract. I don't see him as so bad that Auburn couldn't honor his contract.

Instead of using $6 million to get rid of a coach, use $6 million to attract an excellent offensive coordinator.

If I were making the decision on whether to keep Tuberville, I would make it clear to him that things had to change and ask about his plans on correcting the situation. I wouldn't tell him what should be done. I would leave it up to him to make those decisions.

If the answer I got was that we should simplify our offense, then he wouldn't make it out the door working for Auburn. If he has a plan that seems reasonable, I would tell him I would consider it. A head coach is more of a manager than a coach. It is up to him to make the hard decisions. Hopefully Tuberville is willing to do that.

Doug - Heading north on I-75, about 20 miles south of Lexington you'll see the markers for 627/Winchester signs. It's just north of Richmond, KY. It will save you about 30 minutes. You'll go through the small town of Winchester and follow the signs to I-64 East. From there you're about an hour and 20 minutes to Grayson.

wartiger - Your responsibility is to be honest with your boss and tell them the skinny, that they are being watched, you are worried about how they handle some stuff, etc. It sounds like you are on pretty friendly terms with this person if you are scared of telling the boss's boss the truth. If you don't feel that comfortable, just be honest when the boss's boss asks you stuff. Hopefully the boss's boss will let the boss know what is wrong, and also give the boss a chance to fix it.

You are not responsible for the boss, you are just responsible for working hard yourself and being honest. Follow those two things and you won't have regrets.

- this passage was from a Dr. Phil book. Or maybe it was the Children's Book Click Clack Moo. I gotta be honest, I read mostly children's books these days.

Steve,

I can appreciate your last assesment, the university would look ridiculous for extending a guys contract and firing him the next year. I'd also agree that you typically shouldn't sign a longterm contract unless you willing to stick to it for a significant portion of the time period. However, Auburn will honor the contract by paying the $6M buyout.

Having said that, lets assume Tubs stays and wins the SEC in 2009. Do you really think he won't go back to his old tricks/games to extend and up his contract? It's probably time for both sides to move on.

I had some serious reading to do to catch up from where I left of.

Phred- Being on the fence is exactly where I am at, but then again...

Jay- Hits on the point that concerns me in that this situation is very similiar to Fulmer at Tennessee, and giving him more time was a mistake. ALso, enjoy Weezer and the movie tonight. We all appreciate what you do and the time you take out your personal life to share with your extended Auburn family.

Monica- I've determined that you must have manned the phone at Foy Union at some time in your life. Your freakin' wikipedia :).

Steve- For some odd reason, a lot of Coaches get fired after signing big contract extensions. Terry Bowden, Tommy Bowden, Phil Fulmer???, Mike Shula jutt to name a few. I believe these all included buyouts.

Thats all for the moment.

wartiger, to my mind, the bosses boss should have a reasonable, quantifiable performance expectation for the boss and should not rely on you or any other person (who may or may not have an ulterior motive) to sway his decision. for example, if one of my goals is retaining trained workers, i would not appreciate a boss that runs them off regularly. if you aren't in line for the job, and you are not in a postition to lose your current position, i do not see an upside to discussing your boss with the bosses boss (boss' boss?)and i can see plenty of downside. best of luck. wde

About Tubs like Phil - sure, it could turn out that way, but it could also turn out like JoePa at Penn State. You never know what will happen. It could be like Bobby Bowden at FSU. Or it could be like Jackie Sherril at Miss St. Or Lloyd Carr at Michigan. Or Tommy Bowden at Clemson.

You know, I started this post to try to show it could go either way by naming examples on both sides, but man, it usually goes bad, doesn't it? Not very good for my "keep tubs" case. Tuberville himself is one of the only modern success stories. A tale of caution, of course, would be the firing of Frank Solich, and that is what I think of. Don't get caught up on "the grass is greener." It's been pretty darn green.

Even though Big boss has asked you to keep an eye on Little Boss, Big and Little are friends. You are in a no win situation if you "share info" on Little Boss. Big Boss is NOT a good manager or he would have never asked you to do that. So, we're going to assume the worst with Big. Such as, you give Big something on Little Boss and Big gets defensive. Or Big thinks what you reported wasn't report worthy. Or Big decides you're a snitch (even though you're doing what he asked.)

My Bottom Line: Report nothing to Big. If Big asks you can say "fine" or you can give a half honest, mostly ambiguous, "I think he's doing the best he can" or frame the truth in a way that sounds like you're trying to help. "Little boss could do better if he had more help/more money/whatever." OR you could "Little boss is so busy maybe I could help him by jumping on those outside sales."

I agree with everyone who says be a straight shooter. But that works when you have people around you who are either also straight shooters or don't have your future in their hands. Big Boss (not you) has set up this organizational culture. Now you have to survive it.

I think what should keep Tuberville his job is his willingness to change. Shula went bye bye largely because he kept Dave Rader. Like I say, a head coach is more of a general manager/recruiter. If CTT isn't willing to make changes, I would say he goes the way of Shula, but I think you will see something from him. I don't know what.

Also, I kind of think of this year as similar to when Dye went away from the wishbone, except the transition was easier. It was safer to stay with the wishbone, but it was very clear after Texas A&M handed us our heads in the Cotton Bowl that a change had to be made. For those of you who didn't see that Cotton Bowl game, I have attempted to wipe it from my memory, but basically we saw what happens when a wishbone offense can't run. I think about the Hendenburg every time I think of that game. Oh, the humanity.

With all our opinions on Big Boss and such, it makes me think this should be like a philosophy/ethics forum in the offseason. Someone buy up a textbook and pose the tough questions throughout the year to keep the hotties sassified.

Quick: you are in the African jungle, adn you come upon a village. These dudes are tearing it apart killing everyone, but they are not threatening you. Their leader comes up and says, "Here is a gun, foreigner. Shoot this father of 3 in the head, or we will kill everyone. If you shoot him, we will kill no one else." The gun is in your hand. The dude is telling you "Please, no! I have kids!" except he says it with those clicking sounds, and you understand him because you know clicking sounds. What do you do?

Patience really is a virute. I've learned that the hardest of hard ways. Just do what you are supposed to do, and do it as well as you can. The rest will take care of itself. The people around you who need to know the things you know, most likely already do.

Just keep your eyes open for opportunities to prove your worth, and let the chips fall as they may.

That's my two cents.

here is my plan as it stands. I need more traing in outside sales. The little boss(aka my boss) has somewhat agreed to provide that training. My respect for my boss comes from his willingness to teach me things. Little did he know that his training me may lead to his demise or that could just be arrogance talking. I will continue doing what I am doing for now until I've gotten some expeirence in outside sales. Just rockin on is the conservative move on this now but I do have the advantage of being young so I don't need to allow my ambition to be my downfall.

Tiger,

Your boss should be investing time in you to hopefully work himself out of the job. The thought is he'll get promoted as you get promoted. My best unsolicited advice is to not complain about your work, company, or boss and work harder than anyone else. That's generally a recipe for success. Also, don't throw your direct boss under the bus unless he's doing something unethical or against company policy. You're better off playing the politics of the situation to help you get what you want long term.

eddie, I agree. I heard that UT has the largest recruiting budget in the country. They have a huge stadium, although the last time I saw it, it appeared pretty run down. The Knoxville area is a great atmosphere. Tennessee also has a different kind of schedul. Their toughest typically come in the middle of the season, so near the end of the season they have a chance to get people healthy for an SECCG. It is a big advantage in my opinion.

Texas A&M
Auburn

There's no reason Clemson shouldn't be more competitive in the ACC with FSU and the U being down. All they need is the right coach and he'll be a hero. Texas A&M has a large recruiting and fan base. They should be able to pay more than Auburn.

This might not be a great year to go shopping for a new head coach, but change is always painful.

Monica,

I heard that Brewton was in the line of drug traffic headed north from Florida? That was 10 years ago now, so maybe they've cleaned up the streets and kudzu, that was by far the worst job I've ever had.

I think if Texas A&M would have to be behind Auburn, especially if they only give Sherman one year to be HC. The SEC will pay more money than the ACC Jobs with the exception of FSU. Auburn is better situated in the recruiting base than Clemson, so I that is my logic why Auburn is #2 of available jobs. Tennessee has money and great facilities. Neyland isn't run down, its just the tiniest 100K stadium that I have ever seen. Growing up in Tennessee, I promise you that place gets nuts and very load when they have something to cheer about.

My line of thinking is that UT and Clemson are top dogs in their state, and Clemson is in an easier conference. At Auburn we're asking a coach to come coach against Saban, mad hatter, Petrino, Nutt, and Richt every year. We're also asking him to go up against Saban to recruit in-state talent. It can be done, but if Clemson is offering the same amount of money, someone might prefer that situation. Plus, Clemson stayed with Bowden a lot longer without him winning anything substantial.

Mike Gundy is nuts.

Here are my rankings:

UT
Auburn
Clemson

About being in the easier conference: that would be logical to want, but coaches are generally a pretty cocky bunch. They think they can win anywhere.

Texas A&M is interesting. I read they have a crazy amount of money to throw around. But they've had chances to get high profile coaches, and they haven't done all that well.

The coach we need to go after is plain and simple !! Butch Davis..he is just as good or better of a recruiter as Saban.he works at it and is motivated to beat a guy like saban.Pay him whatever it takes to get him here and let's get started.

War Tiger..this is tricky stuff to answer w/o knowing a lot more details. You have gotten some good advice so far. I'll add the following.

Do your job as good as you can. Don't get invilved in any gossip or discusion with other employees or the immediate boss. Do what you boss wants.

Do not lie to the big boss if asked questions. you can answer truthfully, but may have to be purposefully vague to do so. If the big boss is worthy of his position, he will recognize what you are doing and carefully ask you more questions. At some point you may have to state that you are being put in an uncomfortable situation. That should say enough to the Big Boss.

Good Luck and War Eagle!

I've seen all the arguments for keeping/ditching Tuberville.

Put me in the keep column.

The very reason you're all whining about 'expectations' is directly due to his acheivements as a coach. People cite the 'trend' in conference games and 'playmakers' and 'recruiting'.

Ever wonder what the effects of 'Jetgate' were on recruiting for this team? We are now seeing the senior/junior-redshirt class that was recruited immediately after that time.

He's a great coach, has built a quality system without resorting to NCAA violations (at a place that is rife with that kind of stuff historically) is trying hard to do things the right way, and has a winning steak over our bitterest rival.

He's also a decent guy that I would want to coach my kids at any level. I wouldn't change him for any coach that I've seen Bama hire over the last fifteen years.

You really want someone like Saban? Francione? Price? Weis? Rodrieguez? It's a crap shoot when picking high-price coaches, and not all of them turn out well.

Ten to fifteen years of mediocre coaches that change out every three years is not my idea of fun as a fan.

Hotties,

It has occurred to me that we haven't seen this whole Auburn team show up to a game yet.
La. Monroe - Part O, Most D
Southern Miss - Part O, Part D
Miss. St - No O, All D
Tenn. - Some O, Most D
LSU - Half O, Half D
Vandy - Quarter O, Half D
Arkansas - Barely O, Some D
WVU - Quarter O, Quarter D

I'm curious as to when this team will completely be there for a game. I know it's hard to get the whole team in for each game, but we haven't had one complete one yet.

Also, the Tennessee situation is an example of a guy who made limited changes. Fulmer went "back" to Cutcliffe who up and left for Duke(?) after a couple years. Then, he hired and HC from Richmond (go Spiders) to run the offense but recruting efforts on Rocky Top have remained pitiful.

If Auburn sticks with Tubs (and I think we should), that'll be how we tell if it was a good idea. If this team is in '98 mode in a few years from not recruiting playmakers on BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL, that rests on the CEO.

I know Tubs believes (as do many others) that defense wins championships. That's only true when you can consistently score points above what your defense allows from the opposition.

Give Tubs a chance.

Sullivan said "Ever wonder what the effects of 'Jetgate' were on recruiting for this team? We are now seeing the senior/junior-redshirt class that was recruited immediately after that time."

The jetgate kids would have been freshmen in 04 or redshirt freshmen in 05. So they would already be gone, or seniors if they were redshirt. Which means other than the 5th year seniors, everyone else was recruited post 2004 when it would seem we would have our best chance to get the prime athletes.

We don't have that many seniors on the team at all this year, which means most of the people getting playing time were recruited after the undefeated season and if we capitalized on that season correctly, should be a lot of talent...if we didn't then we didn't recruit very well.

Obviously you think Tub can turn it around. I really hope you are correct, but I just don't have confidence that he'll make the right cuts, and the right hires and let them do the coaching they need to do.

RK, in your opinion, do we have a shot at a bowl this year?

If not, that'll be the first since year 1999 we haven't been bowling at the end of the year.

8:38 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

We have an outside shot at a bowl.

It's probably going to take a win at Ole Miss. We could beat UGA or Alabama, but I just don't see it how we are playing right now.

Tub has pulled big games out of nowhere before, so there is always a chance.

Right now I just see the record being 5-7.

How many bowl ties does the SEC have this year? Sill 8?

If we do get one, it'll be the Papa Johns Bowl, just to spike the attendance.

8:48 AM

Seems the coaches and players for auburn are all pretty down, I cant find out much new info., I only had hope for making a run if we showed improvement, which we havent. Actually, I say UT Martin of course and Like I said, I just believe he will pull a rabbit out of the hat somewhere else.

9:05 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Right now 11 of the 12 SEC teams have a shot at a bowl game. All of the below have at least 3 wins and would have to go at least 3-2 to get to 6-6.

Florida
Georgia
Kentucky
Vanderbilt
Tennessee
South Carolina
Alabama
LSU
Arkansas
Ole Miss
Auburn

If it comes down to a 6-6 Auburn and a 6-6 Vandy to go to a bowl, we'll be just sitting at home watching the bowl games...which is fine with me, because I don't feel 6-6 is bowl worthy anyway.

9:06 AM

I agree RK. A 6-6 Vandy team deserves it more. I Still feel like you should have a winning record to go to a bowl game.

It has been a tough year for our seniors. I hate Brad Lester has had such a quiet year, Rod Smith too, Cox at least got Smith the ball. Tez Doolittle has been a big surprise he has helped our d line. Jason Boseley he has been back and forth on the line all year. The 2 linebackers have had quiet years as well. I would say Tez has been the lone bright spot. Tyrone Green has not gotten any ink this year, probably because the line has been tough to stomach.

9:15 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

i'm all for us going to a bowl at 6-6 (if we get there). my feeling is that the more practice you get in Dec. the better since we'll be breaking in 'at least' a new OC. however, that didn't work out to well this year so what do i know?

9:20 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Someone said earlier that Gundy was crazy. What Gundy did last year was defend his player to someone in the media who called him a "mama's boy". In doing that he took a lot of heat and got made fun of by many...but he also won his team over as a guy who would stand up for his team.

I think he did what was best for his team and is better now because of it, because his team believes he is a guy they can follow because he won't let them down.

However, don't think for a second we can get him from OK State, they have one of the wealthiest most influential boosters in all of college sports in T. Boone Pickens who will pay whatever it takes to keep him if thats the coach he wants.

9:27 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Scottie,

I agree that for practice purposes, it is good to get the bowl. However it's a reward for being mediocre.

9:28 AM

Tubbs stays, he gets another year to get better, he will I think have to make hiring changes, not only due to pressure, but due to him knowing his job is on the line.

9:39 AM
Blogger Scott M. Brannan said...

rewarding mediocrity? i agree RK. but this isn't 1974. too many bowls out there. might as well get in one. i still think it's better from a perception standpoint for recruiting. "hey, Auburn, they stink, they couldn't even make it to a bowl last year...blah, blah, blah."

9:40 AM

If we can some how get past Ole Miss and gain a little confidence, maybe we can take one of UGA or UAT. What say you?

10:08 AM

Can we beat Ole Miss? hell yeah, no doubt, we have twice the talent they have. But are shellshocked and have been all year. I agree Pat Dye did a good job of getting the team to get mad and man up. We have to get pissed and salvage our season. Our D Line has to get better and put pressure on Snead, if not he will eat our weak db's up all day long. In addition we have to stop their D Line, our offensive line has played terrible. Lets not forget Enrique Davis, former signee, who I am sure wants to take it to us.
