The HABOTN plan

I have more newspaper work than usual tonight, so that will tie me up for the next two hours or more.

My goal is to hold a campfire tonight, but it could be really late. Like midnight. I'm sure some of you will be around and chatty at that time ...

Players were available for interviews. Assistant coaches were not.

I'm surprised.

SYNOPSIS:
  • Tuberville said he's now considering all options at quarterback. That includes Barrett Trotter and, I guess, Neil Caudle.

  • Here's the complete line from Tuberville about his job situation: "I hope to be here. If you have good years and then you have one bad year, so be it. It will work its way out. I don't worry about those things. I worry about coaching. We've got five more games to go, and I'll let the higher-ups figure that out."

  • Taking a page out of the (now defunct) MCP, Tuberville said the coaches again did a poor job of coaching tonight.

  • Tuberville said it wasn't a mistake to fire Tony Franklin in the middle of a game week.

  • As you expected, Auburn apparently streamlined its offense again. That's what Jason Bosley said. I believe him.

  • Bosley said he found out about Tony Franklin's firing via cell phone from friends before he learned anything official.

That's horrible.

I'm afraid I've witnessed the dimise of CTT @ Auburn tonight. Considering the circus that is the state of Auburn football, I would not be suprised if he is gone after this year, if not before......

Jay:

Did you ask CTT who he plans to fire this week?

Did he allude to the fact that it is still a chemistry problem with the coaches and players?

Did you ask him why, with him being more involved in the offense, he allowed the Auburn offense to call four straight passing plays inside the four?

Finally, when you have the opportunity, will you please ask him what is more important, unity on his staff, or success?

That would take a bad situation and make it that much worse. Auburn isn't a black hole in the national landscape at this point.

Another high-profile, mid-season firing (almost 10 years to the day of Bowden's mess) could be a huuuuuuuuge blow to the program's credibility.

Tuberville said Arky was not going to let us run. Total BS! We didn't even legitimately try. We streamline the crappy spread offense against all odds. The defense is done if they ever really were that good. Bynes did a lot tonight but he's a step too slow in pass coverage. No pressure on their QB tonight.

Auburn got whacked for the second week in a row by an severly inferior opponent. The time is now. Tuberville is done. But the truth is probably that this was already decided upon before tonight's big load of cowshit.

In these unsettled times I am still proud to be an Auburn alum. We have to realize that AU is far and away bigger than any one person. We all unite to make one special place. That said fire the whole staff and get started all over again. Rhodes is not happy he took this job.

Most schools that have had the success of CTT would never think of replacing their coach with one bad year.

But why does everyone else not think he deserve a bad year?

8:40 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jill's a slut...seriously.

Listen, guys. Let me show you something that makes this year even more mind boggling. Auburn needs 3 more wins to finish uo the regular season at 7-5. Look at the schedule. That's really impossible. This team will easily have a losing season.

8:41 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tuberville just seems tired. Maybe it was a mistake to resign him last year when it seemed to me he really wanted to bolt then. Then both sides couls have reached a "mutual" decision to go in a different direction. It is hard to believe how fast the wheels have fallen off what was a solid(I thought) program. What were his words? "I concur". If the fans have tuned him out, imagine how the players feel. And I totally agree on the post-game "non" interviews with assistants to put players out there to catch the heat. Whatever I may have thought about their coaching I thought the staff were better people than that. Very depressing night.

13 times!

8:49 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Jay,

Do you think we ran the offense we did to try to show Franklin we could run his offense better than he did when he was here?

8:50 PM
Blogger TAD said...

Mark, it's not one bad year. There has been a steady decline since 2004. We caught lightening in a bottle that year. We had that great talent the year before and finished 8-5.

Also, I believe you have to look deeper than the win/loss record. What about the times Tuberville's teams have come out completely unprepared and been embarrassed? The Capital One Bowl against Wisconsin, the 2006 & 2007 Georgia games, the games where Mississippi State and Arkansas beat us at home. Do our coaches make adjustments at halftime? It sure seems they don't.

8:52 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

"Jill's a slut...seriously. "

Is that a bad thing?

As far as the offense ... they were trying to emphasize the run, but didn't have time to add many formations to help them accomplish that goal.

I'm not a doctor, but 56 yards on 33 attempts is not good.

13 carries for 52 yards was what the RB's had. That's a decent 4 yards per carry.

Burns had 15 for 38. That's. 2.5 per carry. For all of his athletic ability, he's pretty easy to take down and not that elusive.

Billings had 1 for 0 yards

And Todd had 1 carry and 3 sacks for -25 yards.

The RB's running the ball was fine. It's when the QB kept it that we didn't do much.

I'm just surprised we didn't use the RB's more...especially late in the 4th quarter from the 5 yard line.

The negative pub shouldn't matter. Just ask Alabama. There's a point where you don't care what people think. You bring in somebody that has a brand of football- winning football. The things I hate about the BBQ Boys

By Will Crudup

1. Awful QB recruiters

2. Awful QB developers

3. Awful in terms of talent placement in the offense- best players typically never "earn" a shot at significant PT. Prechae is about to be CFL Rookie of the Year.

4. Pass defense typically sucks.

5. O-line has been good, I mean good, 3 out of 10 years. Yet, Nall is widely considered a top O-line coach.
6. Awful WR developers aftern landing great talent from the blue chip ranks. How many 4 star WRs do we have and they are all mostly irrelevant.
7. Weakest sub plots as excuses for embarrassng losses. And there are many. When AU loses under this crew they lose big. A 3 pt loss to this year's edition of Arkansas is huge for example.

8. I could keep going if you like?

I guess another way to look at it is, the new deal Tubs signed gave him the flexibility to try something new on offense since he probably feels untouchable this year. Part of the problem with signing such a large buyout is it doesn't give him a huge incentive to care.

I like our boys. I want them to do well in life. But I don't want their crowning achievement to be overcoming the idiocy that is our collective coaching staff. They are being done a real disservice. In light of that realization, I will not say another negative thing about any player for the rest of the year. This was a predictable loss considering the week leading up to it. Burns got the start from what I hear. That's great but it's like starting the season over again. He needs more experience and the only way to get it is to play. He will be fine in time.

If AU fires CTT it will be a huge mistake in my opinion. With him at the helm, this could turn around next year. With a new coach and staff, AU football will be irrelevant for the next 3-5 years.

We all dispised Cox til we got Todd. We dispised Borges til we got Franklin. We will dispise CTT until we get a coach that cant recruit/scout talent, keep our players out of trouble, and cant field a decent defense. If this has taught us anything, it should have taught us to be careful what we wish for.

After sleeping on the events of last night and reflecting back on this season, I think it's time Auburn made a change.

10 years is a long time with the same guy and IMO the head coach and the staff just look like they are going through the motions. I know there are folks that say "Who can we get that's any better?". I don't know the answer to that. What I do know is that Auburn needs a change, because things look and feel stagnant to me. I don't think that change can come from the inside of the program.

James in the 'ham:

Great post buddy. I have been a Tubbs fan and supporter since he got here. He doesn't compromise discipline for victories, he keeps us out of trouble with the NCAA, can develop talent that no one else sees and graduates players. Having said that, he started to lose me with all the off-season Arkansas coaching job/duck hunting trip stuff. Not only was he holding those hostage that were responsible for the chicken-crap jetgate incident, he was holding US hostage. You know, those of us who paid our dues in the classroom and at the registrar's office, continue to give after we graduate; pay the ridiculous prices of gas and tickets (Sat. was my son's first game)and for what? I have never seen more people leave a closely fought SEC game in the third quarter even though Auburn still had THE LEAD. You knew that Arkansas was going to win because you knew our coaches were to incompetent or too indifferent to give those kids a chance. There was not a lack of effort from our players, there was a lack of effort and leadership from our coaches. Why put in Todd after Burns had engineered a touchdown drive? After six games it should be obvious that Todd is not capable of winning us games REGARDLESS of Kodi's shortcomings. Why were Tristan Davis and Mario Fannin healthy enough to return kicks but not to be in the backfield at the same time?

If I have to hear they weren't going to let us run again I will scream. We weren't going to let them run either, but a 5'7" running back nearly outgained our entire offense ON HIS OWN. In the 80's teams put 11 in the box but Dye handed off the rock anyway. Auburn has always ran the ball and didn't care how many you had in the box.

While travelling back home to Mobile today, I pondered the question of my take on Tubb's and Auburn's future. I still wonder if Auburn has accomplished enough in the college football world to expect more success than Tubberville has brought. We only have one NC that we have claimed and even it was on probation. I realize that there are several more that we were jobbed out of, but the question still persists and maybe some of you here can help me rectify that in my own mind. I do know this though: the Auburn people and more importantly those players have accomplished enough to deserve better.

Kris in Mobile,

"..the Auburn people and more importantly those players have accomplished enough to deserve better."
