My big milestone
BIG UP TO THE CAMPERS: First of all, big thanks to all the HOTTIES and "guests" for particpating in Le Campfire this afternoon. We learned that performance anxiety is a real problem some men face each day.
HERCULEAN EFFORT: As mentioned in the Campfire, my 1999 Nissan Maxima (nickname: Hercules) hit the 200,000-mile mark today during my Auburn-to-Montgomery run on I-85. That's fitting. I've hit that road many many many times in 10 years of covering Auburn.
I want to thank my Infiniti G20 whose lease expired in 8/1998. The boys at Ed Dyas Nissan (now defunct) said this here Maxima would be an ideal replacement. It sure was. Thanks for that.
I want to thank Billy and the boys at Haigler Automotive for servicing my vehicle with a gentle touch. They even re-attached my pointless rear-deck spoiler after it was "discharged" during a car wash.
I want to thank that cow in Port Gibson, Miss., the "town too beautiful to burn," for making me yield the road after an Alabama State-Alcorn State game in 1998. A cow. The road. I waited for him to cross. That was the better play.

hahaha Fantastic blog post, Jay.
I had a 1994 Mercury that I called Hercules. She was a beauty, driving her was like floating on air. Don't knock the spoiler, you need that baby to keep those back wheels pinned to the ground.
Billy looked at me and said: "Do you really need this wing?"
That's like asking me if I really need that arm.
That wing saved you $.03 on every gallon since 1999. Add that up.
That's like ... $200,000.
Wow. I had no idea.
Why does ESPN continue to allow Lou Holtz to embarrass himself with these damn "Pep Talk" skits? I prefer to think of Lou as the head coach at ND not some crazy old cenial man on the TV. ESPN is ruining that for me.
You could actually understand everything he said? Just think, Reece, Mark & Lou are calling the AU/WVU game next week. I'm glad I'll be in attendance so I will not have to suffer through that.
Great, I guess they figured that just watching the game wouldn't be painful enough for the Auburn faithful.
He's a Doctor for God sake that's not just a pep talk,he's giving out medical advice....I think, I mean who could understand him.
missed the campfire, glad it was a success. my brother (he lives in dothan) has a 1984 ranger he can't bear to part with. gotta have 500k miles on it. i may be the only one, but i've got a good feeling 'bout the wva game. not based on anything concrete, just a superstition of mine.
Circa 2025....Why does Tuberville insist on doing these lame "Pep Talks" on ESPN2XU?
dude...jay..you got me speechless..oh why isnt you blog post your new pic?
Geezy ... Just wanted to say how proud I am to see my name in lights over there under the ROF heading. Wow! I'm finally famous. I want to thank everyone who has made this possible for me. My mom, dad, all my friends, my third grade teacher who flunked me because I couldn't spell ... oh, I have to stop now. I'm getting all teary.
Oh yeah, congrats on the 200,000. I need to go check and see what the F-250 is reading. It has to be getting close.
1996 nissan maxima - 232,712 as of today and I still have the original spoiler.
Before that, the 1992 green Ford Ranger, aka "The Danger Ranger". 4-cyl stick shift with the white letter tires, oh yeah...traded that one in with 210,000 on it. I see it around town occaisionally, I know it's mine 'cuz the guy who bought it neglected to take off the AU sticker in the back windshield...guess he's a fan...
Next Thursday night will be here in no time...At least I can be optimistic (i.e. blindly loyal) for 7 more days. I need something to get me through the 10 hour drive!
Dude,
I sell Nissans and have had a 98 Maxima when I was first married.
Of course we're in a 08 G35 now.
Anyway, I got 7000 for my 98 in 2005 with 130k on it. bitchin' ride. Nissans are one of the only vehicles still selling today.
Chrissy, man, I'd love to have me a G35. Yummy.
Jay G's Next Car Nominees:
*Mini Cooper S
*(the new) Nissan Maxima
The New Max is a nice driving vehicle however, I'm a bity miffed at the size.
I thought we were getting something about the size of the M class. With its new price tag you'd think it'd be a bit bigger/longer. Again, drives great but a wee bit smallish.
My G35 and its rear wheel platform is baddass.
I can't beat you guys but I did have a Nissan 200sx that racked up just over 175k before selling it for way more than I should have, but the really wanted it and you know the saying 'a fool and his money are soon parted.'
a mini cooper ... dude, I could fit that thing in my truck bed - seriously. Way to small for me. That wouldn't make you nervous, with all the BIG vehicles on the road?
South Park just rules.
A tribute to Snatch and Guy Ritchie.
Small car; BIG gas mileage.
I get more angry than the average American at the pump. I hate paying big money for gasoline.
I know -- it's better now than it was a month ago. It'll go back to $4/gal. You know it will.
My reimbursement rate is 23 cents per mile, mane!
My demo is an 09 Altima 4cyl and it has a MPG meter on the instrument guege and I averaged 28 MPG on the last tank.
Not bad.
Good Lawd.
TCU has opened, emptied and thrown away the can of whup ass on BYU.
Ah, I had a 1995 Maxima. I LOVED that car. It would haul and got good gas mileage. I've got the dog-mobile now, but think I'm going to get a car in another few months. It will probably be another Maxima.
I've been mighty geeked with this car.
Adding a Sirius receiver added at least three years to this car's life. I like it more. It likes me more.
I'd love to have a new stock steering wheel. I wonder how much those run.
I had a 96 and 2000 Max, great cars, for a grocery getter 10 years old its still a great car to drive around. Those new Maximas are gorgeous, I'm glad its gotten a little smaller, those last ones were boats. But I don't think I'd pay that price tag for any fwd car.
23 cents per mile? that's crazy. are you even breaking even?
As has been stated here before, I'm a fan of the cooper s. Given the amount of miles I drive (and the 175k on the Jeep that is starting to worry me), the mini is the best option I have.
Austin: Why the hate for FWD?
Phred: At .23/mile, I need gas to be under $4.22/gallon to break even. It was getting close there at one time.
There is nothing wrong with fwd cars, but if I'm spending that kinda money for a car, I'm looking for that next level of performance (g35, m35, 3 series etc). While the Maxima is a great performer (the new ones are much better than the last generation in my book), I just won't ever enjoy driving it hard as much as I would a rwd platform. It's preference I guess.
I love the new Maximas and love that they are trying to get back to the 4dsc thing and if I was buying a sedan today, it'd be on my short list. For that kind of money I'm just so close to getting what I really want, RWD.
Jay, you'd LOVE driving the Auburn/Montgomery run in a Mini.
I need to a drive a Mini for a bit before buying. It felt great just sitting in one this summer, but I wasn't able to go for a test drive.
I need to.
Yeah, you need a test drive. I did all the research and was sold before I climbed in one. The test drive was better than I expected.
Leave me a phone number or a personal email and I'll give you a call or drop you a line. I'll be happy for you to take a spin in my convertible.
Updated profile with pic of my Mini. Dad becomes Ivory tickler...yes, I am one!
