4th quarter/UGA wins 17-13

We're discussing Auburn's game against Georgia.

  • Auburn's third drive: Good one. Mario Fannin scores on a 35-yard run, capping an unexpected drive. The Tigers had to convert a fourth-and-inches deep in its own territory early in the drive. (11 plays, 90 yards)
      AUBURN 13, GEORGIA 10

  • Georgia's third drive: Stafford to AJ Green 17 pass. TOUCHDOWN. UGA kept it rolling, no problems. (6 plays, 60 yards)
      GEORGIA 17, AUBURN 13

  • Auburn's fourth drive: In progress.

Well I'm stupid, because we don't have a strength on offense. So going for a TD is a good idea in that situation in my mind because the D probably isn't covering deep.

Then again, we've established I'm stupid.

WarEagleRK, I agree. I think we would have been much better off with Borges this season. I think Franklin said it best when he said it was both his and Tuberville's fault.

2:58 PM
Blogger Romberry said...

Tuberville may have saved his job with this game.

I sure hope not. Moral victories don't show in the won-loss column. What Tuberville showed me is that he screwed up this entire season, that he is terrible when it comes to getting it right with starting QB's and that he can (for the first time this year) cover a betting line.

AU under Tuberville is a football program in decline. It won't be turning around, especially in 09. Ole Miss will be better next year. LSU will be better next year. Bama will likely (if they can get a new QB worked in) be better next year. UGA will be no slouch next year either.

This was a season of much promise on the Plains. The head guy screwed it up. Tuberville is a consistent 4-5 loss coach. If that's the standard AU aspires to, he's your guy. Personally, I hope he's gone.

Blogger Mark said...

anyone care to talk about matchups for bammer

3:02 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yes dan, although the problems with the line have a lot to do with our change in offensive philosophy. You can't judge Nall on one season of a mish mash offense. They practiced for a different style of offense. The training regiment was different. That is why we have two of the smallest tackles in the league. It was the Franklin system. One season doesn't suddenly change how good an offensive line coach is. As an offensive coordinator, Nall is a great offensive line coach. I don't think anyone in college football doubts his coaching ability in terms of the offensive line.

3:02 PM
Blogger dan dan the AU fan said...

Well, War Eagle anyway, I think the team made some big improvements, mostly Mario Fannin, but the offense overall looked better. Better play calling on the last drive and we would have won.

3:02 PM
Blogger AUWade said...

Steve, I agree that they played as well as they are coached. I just don't like Rhoads' defense scheme. It seemed like they had the short pass for first down any time they wanted it. That's been the style all year long. I'd like to see more bump and run mixed in, and more blitzes.

3:03 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

This loss would have been far more acceptable had we not lost the Vandy, Ark, Ole Miss & LSU games when we really should have won all of them.

Our two conference wins are over a 6 loss Miss State team and a 7 loss UT team.

We were lucky to win both of those.

3:03 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

jim in scranton, you have to consider execution. This offense is much improved. Winning or losing doesn't change that. You can see that they are making fewer mistakes.

3:03 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

One other thing....where the heck was Fannin on the last drive?

3:05 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Jim,

Had we played UGA in Sept/Oct. We lose this game going away.

A loss is stil a loss, but we have improved on offense since the start of the year. Burns is greatly improved.

That has nothing to do with moral victories.

3:05 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

It is nice to finally have a performance I felt good about. I feel better after this game than the wins over MSU or UT. Both of those games felt like losses. In both of them I felt it was a contest to see who would have the most inept offense.

3:06 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Fannin isn't a good blocker.

The only time he should have been in there was on that last play because since Tate was running to the endzone, we might as well switched Fannin in since the RB wasn't blocking.

3:06 PM
Blogger AUWade said...

mark, I think the Bama game comes down to stopping their run game. We haven't done a great job of that this year, but it is the Bama game. Sometimes you can throw the rest of the season out - we'll see. We need to cut down on mistakes and penalties on offense.

3:08 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The play I didn't get on the last drive was the throw across the field that went out of bounds for Billings. At best it's a 4 yard gain to the sideline and just a waste of a down and time.

3:08 PM
Blogger Romberry said...

You can't judge Nall on one season of a mish mash offense.

I don't judge Nall on this season. His lines have consistently gotten AU QB's killed. AU running backs, even when they do very well, have usually done it despite the offensive line, not because of it.

Nall is as overrated as any coach in the biz. The entire offensive staff is about worthless. With the exceptions of the years that Petrino and Borges was here, that has always been the case under Tuberville.

Look at it this way...it's been our defensive coordinators who have been hired away. What programs have you seen or heard of that have been trying to lure coaches of our offensive staff away?

I am not sure why many are judging the entire offensive coaching staff on this disfunctional season.

It isn't just this season. It's a consistent problem. I suggest you head over to the board on ITAT and look up the posts by StatTiger.

AU get's its QB sacked enough that it's a wonder they make it through the season. Knox's wideouts consistently run bad routes and develop hands of stone. Gran is a "great" RB coach only when he has GREAT running backs...and his special teams speak for themselves. Ensminger? Do I even need to talk about Ensminger?

Why someone would think that this is a great (or even good) offensive staff is a mystery to me. They want to blame their failures on OC's (see Borges and Franklin) when the failure is them.

Another stand up job by the defense, and the offense can't capitalize on anything. They aren't consistent and without the playmaking skills of Mario Fannin we might not have even been close in a game to a team who's defense has been open floodgates the past month. I'm not saying Tub should stay or go but something needs to be addressed as we are assured a .500 at best season. As a faithful fan I am disgusted by the outcome of this game as we definitely had a chance to win and couldn't get it done. I hate that our team has lost 6 games and we could have easily won 5 of them. The fact that this game was close just makes me even more upset because it shows what a waste this season has become.

Wow. I'm constantly amazed how some people can find something bad in anything. We played well today and had a good plan. They just had more players.

I'd like to hear what y'all think on this.

If you think the play calling is bad, do you think it's bad because of bad coaches or because coaches don't have much with which to work? Or some other reason.

Maryland 14, North Carolina 12 during a flood.

Steve,

I'd be willing to make a big wager that Hugh Nall will not be the offensive line coach at Auburn next year.

Barkley,

Kelly is a good coach, but was completely classless last night on how he treated Kraigthorpe last night night. They had a confrontation before the game and he refused to shake hands after the game.

BAD COACHING. We got the horses to do a lil something, but are put behind the 8 ball by bad play calls.

Monica, I think the play calling is just way too predictable. I can't say what is causing that. They seem to want to play conservative until we have to pass. The play calling needs improvement.

Monica, I think it is both. Some bad play calls, and some bad players.

back to the days of moral victories.

I love it. Play calling is predictable and safe. Throw to sidelines so only one can catch it. Poor job in play calling. But hey I said it would be 55-17.

monica,

A little of both, IMO. Auburn lacks skill people that are game breakers. Your, QB, while improving is not experienced. You have solid RB's but no Moreno type backs.

Not sure that Nallsminger is a good combo. But that is just looking at it from the outside.

I know in a game like that the refs let a lot go, but then there should have been a no call on that PI on Powers on UGA's last TD drive.

Otherwise we should have had about 3 PI's on our last drive.

Gary and Vern are gonna fight over Tebow before this game is over.

RK, my understanding is that it was Kraightorpe's fault. He threw a fit in pregame because UC was huddled on their logo in pregame. I don't recall them jumping around and acting a fool, but I could be wrong.

Blogger BinOBA said...

Whose fault would you say it was that we don't have "the players" at some positions? Good scheme and some discipline can whip talent everyday of the week and twice on sunday.

3:37 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

No, they never said.

I know they go head to head with for the same players a lot with both schools being an hour or so apart, but they never said.

You may be right, but still shake his hand after the game.

It doesn't take anything away from Kelly in my eyes. He's a good coach.

Two weeks until the Alabama game, who rallies this team as a leader and lets us make a good run?

Someone has to step up and make this work, if not we finish 5-7.

what are they saying?

RK who is the coach on the post game show? I keep missing and I don't recognize his voice. I know he said,, "It's nobody's fault."

3:44 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

One caller was saying "I don't want a coach who just runs out and argues when the refs blow a call. I want one who come out on the field and gets in the playes faces every time they make a mistake. We need someone like that."

Don Dunn - finally he said it again

Kodi is gonna have to step up obviously, but who is going to be his go to receiver? Someone has to be a playmaker catching the ball. Our receivers have been pathetic up to this point.

What does it say about your program when fans feel good about having a close loss at home to one of your biggest rivals? And UGA did everything possible to keep AU in the game. Their lack of discipline is stunning to watch. As for Bama, if you thought there were holes knocked in the d-line today, try not to think what 2 weeks from now will be like. I just see BAD matchups on the line of scrimmage on BOTH sides of the ball.

One word that sums up my feelings concerning this game: disgust.

So many things that really just sucked, from special teams play to some of the plays called.

And what makes it hurt that much more is that despite all of it we had a good chance to pull out the W.

I hear you, Mon. It is hard to remember how excited I was for the season to start, and now I will be just as excited for the season to end. It stuns me to see how fast the wheels have fallen off of this program. I am ready for some new blood in the program, we are just going through the motions.

I never listen to call ins after the game. After we creamed NM State last year you would have thought it was a loss the way some of the idiots {who seemed quite intoxicated) were talking.

Special teams cost the game today. Pure and simple. Missed extra point influenced the play calls at the end. THe missed FG was a push. Both teams missed those, but an extra point is an automatic.

Well, as I am fond of saying. When you lose, you learn from it and move on. Any other strong feelings directed at the result of the game are a waste of energy.

Time to start getting ready for Alabama. Luckily players are a whole lot more resilient than fans.
