4th quarter/UGA wins 17-13
We're discussing Auburn's game against Georgia.
- Auburn's third drive: Good one. Mario Fannin scores on a 35-yard run, capping an unexpected drive. The Tigers had to convert a fourth-and-inches deep in its own territory early in the drive. (11 plays, 90 yards)
- AUBURN 13, GEORGIA 10
- Georgia's third drive: Stafford to AJ Green 17 pass. TOUCHDOWN. UGA kept it rolling, no problems. (6 plays, 60 yards)
- GEORGIA 17, AUBURN 13
- Auburn's fourth drive: In progress.

Well I'm stupid, because we don't have a strength on offense. So going for a TD is a good idea in that situation in my mind because the D probably isn't covering deep.
Then again, we've established I'm stupid.
2nd and 4, Burns underthrows wide open Dunn at UGA 40 ... 50 secds
Wide open Dunn.
ahhh he couldn't get out
3rd and 4,
Burns scrambles to UGA 38. ... first down ... 38 seconds to go.
i'm gonna you know what
Burns spikes it ... stops clock .. 2nd down coming
Time running out, let's go Kodi
why did we down it. great run before. run it again.
GO DEEP
let kodi run it every time
Come on Auburn
If they stay in man, kodi can dice em
2nd and 10 ...
Burns over throws Billings on sideline ... would have gained about 5.
33 seconds to go ... 3rd and 10 coming
We can't throw 4 yard sideline routes like that.
come on kodi. you are doing it man.
he stepped out of bounds.
This comment has been removed by the author.
They're spying on Kodi now.
What's the flag?
Pass interference?
3rd and 10 ...
pass Interference on UGA ... will put ball on 24 yard line with 26 seconds to go.
yeah, we'll take it
interfenerence, we are going to win it.
Good acting by Rod Smith there on the hand check.
please. lets do it!
kodi up the middle will pick up 10
1st and 10 ...
hitch and go overthrown to R. Smith on sideline.
Kodi's dialing in on first guy
wait, why is burns in there. where is chris tod?
I love kodi. lets go kodi
19 seconds to go
2nd and 10 ...
pass to billings at 14 out of bounds ...3rd and 1
oh man. im dyin here
over the middle, bout the 7 yed line, hook and latteral that didn't work on lsu, run it
UGA is keeping so many people at the line of scrimmage we've got to have people either open or single coverage deep.
looked like interference.
Maybe two more shots.
Rod Smith is getting no separation from Asher Allen, but it's all due to holding.
13 seconds to go ..
Smith tangles with DB ... no flag ... 4th and 1 7 seconds to go.
lot of contact
4th down
4th, lots of freakin contact there
ball game
so close. and it's gone.
horrible horrible call again.
game over
Burns needed to get out of the pocket on that play.
Good game, came out on the wrong end.
Kodi flings ... Tate doesn't catch it.... ball game ...1 seconde left.
ballgame
not enough time for kodi to use his legs. on that drive. that is what killed us. kodi is the man.
That wasn't the call, that was the pass selection by the QB
why not run, clock stops to re-set chains, spike on reset?
faceguard and no call, two very aggressive last two plays by ga, can't complain we didn't get calls, shoulda made it happen
The decision on the next to last series to throw to the end zone was the killer, plus the burning of the timeout.
It forced us to throw to the sideline and to the end zone.
I still thinks this brings confidence into the Iron Bowl. We can compete with Alabama, and if we're in the game in the 4th qtr anything can happen.
Kodi was smart to not run. He had about 20 yards to run, and there wouldn't be a chance for another play.
i give our guys credit. I really did not think we had any chance at all.
Where was the guy that scored our only 2 TD.
$#@! botched xtra point and field goals!!!!!!!!!
With 7 seconds left a run is pretty dangerous.
We are going to beat Alabama.
Bright side? If you bet on AU, they covered the line.
Second bright side? The odds of Tuberville (at least if he insists on keeping his offensive staff) just got a little longer.
With only 7 seconds, I don't think you get the ball spotted in time to spike ... unless you get the ball out of bounds.
No mario = no td
I am very proud of this Auburn team. This is the second time this season we have lost because of a missed extra point, but this offense looked much improved.
mario is a going to be great. if he gets 30 carries next week, we have a chance
Two days ago I didn't think it would even be close.
Fannin wasn't in because he's not a good blocker, but if the RB is running to the endzone on the last play, then he should have been the RB.
The last series wasn't AU's problem.
I think kodi grew up a lot in this game.
And this does look good for Tuberville. If people doubt he can turn things around, I think he provided proof. We were very close.
We will not match up well with Alabama. But what do I know I thought UGA might kill us.
If we could get anything on those opening drives of the 2nd half to set up momentum, we'd be a totally different team this year.
Players did not loose this one.
Tuberville may have saved his job with this game.
5-6. plenty of time in the off-season to turn things around.
Eventually Burns is going to get that game winning drive. He's came close vs Ark and vs UGA.
However we can't wait much longer on that.
I think Tubby might have coached his last uga/au game
Special teams helped lose this game.
Missed FG.
Missed PAT.
Kick out of bounds on that last UGA TD drive.
Ensminger just not a good play caller. Not his fault he was put in the position though.
Burns is showing a lot of promise. He has been looking very good sense late in the Arkansas game. This offense didn't come together early enough in the season, but I can see hope for next season.
I think Kodi showed today that he is the guy, though.
And, I think Tuberville showed he dserves his job.
Mark,
I think this game helped Tub more than it hurt him.
tigerfan44, it seems Ensminger did a good job this game. We hung with one of the better teams in the SEC.
Great game up until that last drive. Too many fade routes.
I know Gran is pretty much 2nd in command under Tub, but at some point we have to start questioning the inconsistancies on Special teams over the past decade.
This comment has been removed by the author.
emsminger did a good job on most of the day. however that last four down series on our next to last drive was a killer.
missed xp took this one out of our hands, not that anyone kicking for us is a gimme no matter where the ball is on the field. Attention to detail killed us today.
WarEagleRK, I think there is no doubt that this game helped Tuberville. It shows that he can turn things around. This performance is exactly what he needed.
steve once again yoyu are full of crap
mark, I didn't like that fade call either. I am wondering what they saw that made them go with that.
I agree steve, they looked better. Still think Nall and Knox need to go.
Thanks for the updates
Ensminger had as many bad calls this week as any other, that first second half posession was pitiful, as were MANY other calls.
Rk you right about Special teams Don't forget dunns retreat on first punt. Kids don't realize how 10 yards that deep effects play calling.
Great effort just not enough to make those plays right now.
I hope we can get up like this in 2 weeks.
War Eagle anyway
Wonder why we didn't try a pass over the middle at the end?
I agree Mr. Sensible. It does look like this team has finally come together. It is too late for this season, but an upset of Bama would be huge anyway.
I was asking myself the same thing wade.
That performance was no different than any other game this season. Inconsistent offense, a defensive letdown in the 4th quarter and huge special teams mistakes. I saw no progress at all.
dan, Nall is one of the better offensive line coaches around. As for Knox, I really question him, but we shall see.
when the fade didn't work to Rod Smith, I thought we might try a post or something to throw off the db. I was hoping for at least a jump ball. Give the receiver a shot.
Sad to say, but at worst Al Borges offense has us 9-2 this year. Probably 10-1 with a win over LSU and a loss to WVU.
R u kidding jim
Fannin seems to have star potential if someone will block for him. Both he and Tate made some things happen.
I think Burns has progressed a lot since the 1st of the year.
You heard it here first - Chris Todd starts the next game
(as RB, trying to do his best Tre Smith game-of-his-life imitation to spur an upset in Tuscaloosa)
I'm just not sold anymore on Nall, I think it has to do with off the field stuff as well.
Defense was pretty ineffective again. At least the offense was able to move the ball a bit more today. With a good kicking game, we probably win.
WarEagleRK, I agree. I think we would have been much better off with Borges this season. I think Franklin said it best when he said it was both his and Tuberville's fault.
Tuberville may have saved his job with this game.
I sure hope not. Moral victories don't show in the won-loss column. What Tuberville showed me is that he screwed up this entire season, that he is terrible when it comes to getting it right with starting QB's and that he can (for the first time this year) cover a betting line.
AU under Tuberville is a football program in decline. It won't be turning around, especially in 09. Ole Miss will be better next year. LSU will be better next year. Bama will likely (if they can get a new QB worked in) be better next year. UGA will be no slouch next year either.
This was a season of much promise on the Plains. The head guy screwed it up. Tuberville is a consistent 4-5 loss coach. If that's the standard AU aspires to, he's your guy. Personally, I hope he's gone.
Hate that for you guys and gals. Y'all played well.
I wasn't too thrilled about the play call on the 2nd 4th down on the second to last drive. I believe that was the one.
Nallbaggage?
rk borges would have helped with all injuries on d. not been on field as much.
Steve, that whole blocking for them comment, isn't that Nall's guys responsibility?
AUWade, I disagree. We were playing the #1 offense in the SEC and held them to 17 points. I was very pleased with our defensive performance when considering what they were up against.
leading receiver: billings 6 for 66
Thanks, Faker.
tigerfan44,
No I'm not. We didn't get the job done. Just like LSU, Vandy, Ark., and Ole Miss. We had a chance to win every one of those games just like today. Are we only hoping for moral victories now?
anyone care to talk about matchups for bammer
Yes dan, although the problems with the line have a lot to do with our change in offensive philosophy. You can't judge Nall on one season of a mish mash offense. They practiced for a different style of offense. The training regiment was different. That is why we have two of the smallest tackles in the league. It was the Franklin system. One season doesn't suddenly change how good an offensive line coach is. As an offensive coordinator, Nall is a great offensive line coach. I don't think anyone in college football doubts his coaching ability in terms of the offensive line.
Well, War Eagle anyway, I think the team made some big improvements, mostly Mario Fannin, but the offense overall looked better. Better play calling on the last drive and we would have won.
Steve, I agree that they played as well as they are coached. I just don't like Rhoads' defense scheme. It seemed like they had the short pass for first down any time they wanted it. That's been the style all year long. I'd like to see more bump and run mixed in, and more blitzes.
This loss would have been far more acceptable had we not lost the Vandy, Ark, Ole Miss & LSU games when we really should have won all of them.
Our two conference wins are over a 6 loss Miss State team and a 7 loss UT team.
We were lucky to win both of those.
jim in scranton, you have to consider execution. This offense is much improved. Winning or losing doesn't change that. You can see that they are making fewer mistakes.
One other thing....where the heck was Fannin on the last drive?
Jim,
Had we played UGA in Sept/Oct. We lose this game going away.
A loss is stil a loss, but we have improved on offense since the start of the year. Burns is greatly improved.
That has nothing to do with moral victories.
It is nice to finally have a performance I felt good about. I feel better after this game than the wins over MSU or UT. Both of those games felt like losses. In both of them I felt it was a contest to see who would have the most inept offense.
Fannin isn't a good blocker.
The only time he should have been in there was on that last play because since Tate was running to the endzone, we might as well switched Fannin in since the RB wasn't blocking.
mark, I think the Bama game comes down to stopping their run game. We haven't done a great job of that this year, but it is the Bama game. Sometimes you can throw the rest of the season out - we'll see. We need to cut down on mistakes and penalties on offense.
better play calling the first 3 quarters and we're running the clocck out instead of trying to score, S'mingered again.
jim, you appear to be the one concerned with moral victories. I am interested in seeing an improving football team. If you aren't able to recognize improvement, I cannot teach you. You might want to just concern yourself with moral victories.
I wonder if Brad still thinks we will beat UGA and Bammer by a good amount of points. Talk about dumb things to say.
The play I didn't get on the last drive was the throw across the field that went out of bounds for Billings. At best it's a 4 yard gain to the sideline and just a waste of a down and time.
You can't judge Nall on one season of a mish mash offense.
I don't judge Nall on this season. His lines have consistently gotten AU QB's killed. AU running backs, even when they do very well, have usually done it despite the offensive line, not because of it.
Nall is as overrated as any coach in the biz. The entire offensive staff is about worthless. With the exceptions of the years that Petrino and Borges was here, that has always been the case under Tuberville.
Look at it this way...it's been our defensive coordinators who have been hired away. What programs have you seen or heard of that have been trying to lure coaches of our offensive staff away?
rk, i think that's a read by the rb to block or release on a route, not sure though, i don't have the playbook, either page of it.
303 yards of total offense against a team that in their last 3 games gave up 38, 49 and 38.
Trott hurt his knee, tried to come back in 2nd half, but couldn't
Was Lester even on the field?
AUWade, I agree. I really can't see us stopping that Bama running game. That will be the telling factor in the Iron Bowl. For us to have a chance to win, this defense is going to have to improve in terms of run defense.
Where was Lester?
i'm with roman far as nall goes, call stacey searles at UGA. I'm sure he still knows his way around auburn
wade.
That is definitely it. LOS in the BAMA game. They have controlled it on both sides of the ball all year. except Ole miss maybe. Ole miss had a chance against them late and that is what we need to do. I doubt we deny julio all day; but, if we can get to jpw, we may be able to rattle him.
LOS is the key.
Nall will not be at Auburn next year, so I don't think it matters.
CTT, "Bottom line: we were in red zone 4 times that we didn't get any points- somebody's got to make a play."
We struggled blocking the middle all year long and in two weeks we line up vs Terrance Cody in the middle.
Both Gran and Nall have been approached by other schools. I am not sure why many are judging the entire offensive coaching staff on this disfunctional season.
WarEagleRK, where did you see the announcement about Nall leaving? I haven't seen that.
CTT, "We ran 124 yards - thought if we did that we'd win."
On Kodi - "...his height gets him when they get good push." (Ray Cotton is 6'4") just sayin
"...our coaches made good adjustments in 2nd half..."
When was Nall approached by another school?
I know MTSU interviewed Gran. Our special teams problems aren't this year...they are every year. If we cover a kickoff last year we win 3 more games than we did. Duval, Vaughn & now Byrum haven't put up consistant good consecutive years.
At one point Nall was offered the head coaching position at Georgia Southern.
aside from kodi, nobody's gotten better this year, maybe a couple young defenders but ZERO improvement otherwise, regressed is a word that comes to mind for LOTS of the team. You have to get better as the seasong goes on, if you aren't gettin better, you're gettin worse.
No announcement on Nall, I'm just saying he won't be back next year.
Even if Tub is back, Nall will be gone.
I feel pretty comfortable in that statement.
Burns needs to roll out of the pocket more than he does. When it collapses around him he makes an odd jump pass.
WarEagleRK, where is it that you have heard Nall is going?
at least we aren't south carolina right now, geesh
Bin - sometimes you're getting injured
Ah, never mind. You are predicting. Sorry. I misunderstood.
Somebody needs to tell Florida that the spread doesn't work in the SEC.
By the way South Carolina handing game to Florida with 3 turnovers that all either were for TD's or set up TD's.
Sucks that now we haven't beaten UGA since the 31-30 game in 2005.
Anything works with Timothy Tebow.
South Carolina is playing horrible.
I am not sure why many are judging the entire offensive coaching staff on this disfunctional season.
It isn't just this season. It's a consistent problem. I suggest you head over to the board on ITAT and look up the posts by StatTiger.
AU get's its QB sacked enough that it's a wonder they make it through the season. Knox's wideouts consistently run bad routes and develop hands of stone. Gran is a "great" RB coach only when he has GREAT running backs...and his special teams speak for themselves. Ensminger? Do I even need to talk about Ensminger?
Why someone would think that this is a great (or even good) offensive staff is a mystery to me. They want to blame their failures on OC's (see Borges and Franklin) when the failure is them.
True Barkley
You're correct roman. For proof, look at the 2003 season. Same coaches with 3 future 1st rounders and Brandon Jacobs. FIVE losses.
No matter what happens with Tub, there will be a completely new offensive staff next year.
If Tub stays, Gran will be the only holdover.
So...two 1-AA schools (MTSU and Ga. Southern) made a run at two (Gran and Nall) two of our coaches on the offensive side of the ball. 1-AA. Color me impressed with the top-notch programs salivating for our offensive staff. NOT!
MTSU has been 1-A for 5 years now.
Not that it makes it more impressive or not...
If Tuberville is gone I want Brian Kelly.
On a totally unrelated note that nobody cares about it's dropped 13 degrees in 4 hours here.
Tuberville won't be going anywhere. Neither will Gran or Nall. I do think we will see some shake ups on the offensive staff though. We have a tradition of turning high profile receiver recruits into nobodys. That has to change.
I thought it was a great effort but that's where my praise stops. I know people like to gush over the fact that we hung in, covered the spread etc....I agree with all of those previous posters who said this has been the theme of the season. Another stand up job by the defense, and the offense can't capitalize on anything. They aren't consistent and without the playmaking skills of Mario Fannin we might not have even been close in a game to a team who's defense has been open floodgates the past month. I'm not saying Tub should stay or go but something needs to be addressed as we are assured a .500 at best season. As a faithful fan I am disgusted by the outcome of this game as we definitely had a chance to win and couldn't get it done. I hate that our team has lost 6 games and we could have easily won 5 of them. The fact that this game was close just makes me even more upset because it shows what a waste this season has become.
Wow. I'm constantly amazed how some people can find something bad in anything. We played well today and had a good plan. They just had more players.
I'd like to hear what y'all think on this.
If you think the play calling is bad, do you think it's bad because of bad coaches or because coaches don't have much with which to work? Or some other reason.
Maryland 14, North Carolina 12 during a flood.
Steve,
I'd be willing to make a big wager that Hugh Nall will not be the offensive line coach at Auburn next year.
Barkley,
Kelly is a good coach, but was completely classless last night on how he treated Kraigthorpe last night night. They had a confrontation before the game and he refused to shake hands after the game.
BAD COACHING. We got the horses to do a lil something, but are put behind the 8 ball by bad play calls.
Monica, I think the play calling is just way too predictable. I can't say what is causing that. They seem to want to play conservative until we have to pass. The play calling needs improvement.
Monica, I think it is both. Some bad play calls, and some bad players.
back to the days of moral victories.
I love it. Play calling is predictable and safe. Throw to sidelines so only one can catch it. Poor job in play calling. But hey I said it would be 55-17.
monica,
A little of both, IMO. Auburn lacks skill people that are game breakers. Your, QB, while improving is not experienced. You have solid RB's but no Moreno type backs.
Not sure that Nallsminger is a good combo. But that is just looking at it from the outside.
I know in a game like that the refs let a lot go, but then there should have been a no call on that PI on Powers on UGA's last TD drive.
Otherwise we should have had about 3 PI's on our last drive.
We're playing out of a hole too much
RK, I didn't see that. Do you know what the confrontation was about?
Gary and Vern are gonna fight over Tebow before this game is over.
RK, my understanding is that it was Kraightorpe's fault. He threw a fit in pregame because UC was huddled on their logo in pregame. I don't recall them jumping around and acting a fool, but I could be wrong.
Whose fault would you say it was that we don't have "the players" at some positions? Good scheme and some discipline can whip talent everyday of the week and twice on sunday.
No, they never said.
I know they go head to head with for the same players a lot with both schools being an hour or so apart, but they never said.
You may be right, but still shake his hand after the game.
It doesn't take anything away from Kelly in my eyes. He's a good coach.
Some of the callers on the post game are embarassing.
Two weeks until the Alabama game, who rallies this team as a leader and lets us make a good run?
Someone has to step up and make this work, if not we finish 5-7.
Thanks for the responses everyone.
what are they saying?
RK who is the coach on the post game show? I keep missing and I don't recognize his voice. I know he said,, "It's nobody's fault."
One caller was saying "I don't want a coach who just runs out and argues when the refs blow a call. I want one who come out on the field and gets in the playes faces every time they make a mistake. We need someone like that."
Don Dunn - finally he said it again
Kodi is gonna have to step up obviously, but who is going to be his go to receiver? Someone has to be a playmaker catching the ball. Our receivers have been pathetic up to this point.
What does it say about your program when fans feel good about having a close loss at home to one of your biggest rivals? And UGA did everything possible to keep AU in the game. Their lack of discipline is stunning to watch. As for Bama, if you thought there were holes knocked in the d-line today, try not to think what 2 weeks from now will be like. I just see BAD matchups on the line of scrimmage on BOTH sides of the ball.
This is my comforting mantra: It will all be over in two weeks.
One word that sums up my feelings concerning this game: disgust.
So many things that really just sucked, from special teams play to some of the plays called.
And what makes it hurt that much more is that despite all of it we had a good chance to pull out the W.
I hear you, Mon. It is hard to remember how excited I was for the season to start, and now I will be just as excited for the season to end. It stuns me to see how fast the wheels have fallen off of this program. I am ready for some new blood in the program, we are just going through the motions.
Internet is "down" here at J-H.
I'm on an air card that I keep handy in case of emergency. Sorry I can't be of more service right now.
I never listen to call ins after the game. After we creamed NM State last year you would have thought it was a loss the way some of the idiots {who seemed quite intoxicated) were talking.
Special teams cost the game today. Pure and simple. Missed extra point influenced the play calls at the end. THe missed FG was a push. Both teams missed those, but an extra point is an automatic.
Jay...The Technological MacGyver
Well, as I am fond of saying. When you lose, you learn from it and move on. Any other strong feelings directed at the result of the game are a waste of energy.
Time to start getting ready for Alabama. Luckily players are a whole lot more resilient than fans.
