4th quarter/UGA wins 17-13
We're discussing Auburn's game against Georgia.
- Auburn's third drive: Good one. Mario Fannin scores on a 35-yard run, capping an unexpected drive. The Tigers had to convert a fourth-and-inches deep in its own territory early in the drive. (11 plays, 90 yards)
- AUBURN 13, GEORGIA 10
- Georgia's third drive: Stafford to AJ Green 17 pass. TOUCHDOWN. UGA kept it rolling, no problems. (6 plays, 60 yards)
- GEORGIA 17, AUBURN 13
- Auburn's fourth drive: In progress.

jay what is the vibe in the press box? What is the percentage now?
Folks, what a game. I have mused before that our team kinda appeared to cash in their chips in the face of adversity. Not today my friends. That being said and without speculating on the future of any of the coaches, that bunch sure has had a propensity for playing guys that consistently hurt our chances of winning. The first example is the insistence to play Chris Todd. Think about it. Kodi has matured essentially every game since getting the start without strings attached. Where would he be today if that nod had come from game 1? The second example, and possibly more painful is continuing to march you-know-who out there to kick field goals. He is a shade better than 50% from inside 30 yards and worse from beyond. If a guy that has never played a down of football at any level can unseat a preseason all SEC punter, then surely there is someone on that bench that can do no worse kicking it through the uprights. This team is simply not good enough to miss that many field goals. While I am ranting and with the knowledge that Fannin is not as good at blocking, is there a rule that prohibits him from playing slot receiver? The guy scores both our touchdowns and doesn't sniff the field on the final drive? Unless he was hurt that is inexcusable.
I agree with your point denny, but it doesn't seem AU learns anything from the losses. And I do feel very bad for the players. A bumbling coaching staff has ruined a lot of hard work by these guys. They deserve much better.
denny, the missed extra point was huge. If I remember correctly, that's not the first one this year. I can't recall a season where we've ever missed more than one before now.
Kris, thanks for summing up a lot of what my thoughts are. Right now I just can't bring myself to post more than a few sentences, that's how disheartened I am.
Just hope that the players can stay up for Bama despite everything that's going on.
BinOBA, a large part of the problem with players has to do with Jetgate. I see no reason to assign blame. I have liked our last two recruiting classes. so it appears we are headed in the right direction.
AUWade, a missed extra point cost us the Vandy game too.
kris, Hull missed the field goal not Byrum. I'm assuming that is the you know who you meant.
Steve - yep, that was it. The one today looked like it was a bad snap. Just seems like it should be an automatic to me, but then again I don't have to actually do it :)
with all due respect Wade, the missed field goal today came off the foot of Wes Byrum.
AUWade, Byrum missed the field goal.
I try not to criticize players by name when it can be helped.
Watching the replay of that last play it was obvious Kodi panicked and just threw the ball up. If he would have tucked it and ran outside the pocket something would have came open on the left side of the field. That's just something he is going to have to learn with experience.
If we would have made the extra point, we would have never been in the situation though. A well coached team doesn't lose two games because of missed extra points. There needs to be some serious changes made whether Tuberville is staying or not.
Everyone should take a good look at this South Carolina game. I was afraid our game would look much like this.
barkley for govenor, I think we have already seen some changes, but a lot will depend upon the new OC and what offense we run next season. I do hope Tuberville gives the new OC free reins to hire his own offensive staff.
Whan Tubs speaks about fixing the problems with AU, all I can think of is Paulson saying they have the economic meltdown under control.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Me too steve
Georgia is not good enough at this point in the season to make Auburn look as bad as S. Carolina looks right now.
If Tubs is gone, we need to make sure the next coach has a successful record in extra point kicking.
BinOBA, a large part of the problem with players has to do with Jetgate.
That was frickin' 2003. We are five years on.
After the undefeated season in 2004, recruiting went nowhere. Tubs didn't capitalize on anything but his paycheck.
The only real problem I see arising from Jetgate is that the powers that be backed down and didn't finish the job. Tuberville's time is up. It's time for him to cash in that lottery ticket commonly referred to as a contract. 6 million dollars is more money than most of us can imagine. Heck, 3.2 million dollars (his wholly unearned salary this year) is most that most of us can imagine.
How much is 3.2 million? Well, if you make 10 grand a month in your job, it will take you more than 26 years (!!) to make 3.2 million.
Gran, Knox, and Nall all need to be gone. If Tuberville can't do that then he needs to be gone as well.
Gran and Nall are two of the best offensive position coaches around. That makes no sense.
anonymous, think. The players being recruited in 2003 graduate when?
If Tuberville is here next season, I would hope that that particular lesson (letting the OC bring in his own staff) is imprinted upon his brain.
Gran is our speacial teams coach, how do you think special teams is doing?
Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown made Eddie Gran look good, they could have made me look good, come on!
Are you satisfied with our offensive line play?
I am not sure if bringing his own coaches would have helped with Franklin. I get the impression he didn't have the people skills required.
And while we're on the subject of coordinators, will someone please tell me why Rhoads doesn't believe in blitzing occasionally? Stafford (and most other SEC QBs) is just too damn good when NO pressure is coming...
Our defense played well.
we blitzed a few times today. they didn't cause any pressure that i noticed, though.
How did we not get beat by 30? I may never figure that one out.
And I venture to say despite the score, our D right now is more of a problem than our O.
When you have the second best team on the field, the line is, oh, so fine.
Sending on the FG team, then burning a timeout, then throwing into the end zone.
That was it ... asking too much to get us into the end zone at the end.
UGA's final possession ... 3rd and 4 ... have to cover Moreno ... have to.
Yes, the defense played pretty well today. However, we were so close to getting Stafford a few times that one more player coming might've made the difference in a completion vs. a sack or a pick.
kris and steve, my mistake on the missed kick kicker. I think Hull will have to get his shot in two weeks. Anything else would be foolish for Tuberville.
Did I miss something on S Marks? I saw him in on some obvious passing downs, but it seemed to be Tez and Ricks for the most part. Wasn't he supposed to be back 100%?
I have been on the change bandwagon ... and nothing that did or didn't happen today did or could have changed my mind.
I simply question the energy and the momentum of the program ... the keeping of playmakers on the sideline ...
Tommy Tuberville needs to ask Nick Saban if he can borrow Dr. Elko.
I am surprised you guys thought the D played so well. They got pushed around all day, it wasn't the Auburn defense we have been used to the last few years. Secondary played great, but we were getting tossed around in the front seven. Georgia was their own worst enemy, stupid play calling, stupid penalties, near misses. The D is not what it once was.
To me ... we're in 1980 all over again.
It's going to take something different.
This defense has been beat up. I am very pleased that we only gave up 17 points to the best offense in the SEC. You have to realize who we were playing.
How does UGA's offensive stats match up against UF's for the year?
AUWade, I agree that something has to change with the field goals and especially the extra points. They have caused us several games this season. Byrum showed promise last year, but something just isn't right this season. I think the coaches hoped that Byrum would turn it around much like John Vaughn did, but I haven't seen much of a change. There are kickers that go through their entire career without missing an extra point. It should be a no brainer.
Part of the point is that UGA was ripe to beat today ... and we didn't get it done -- special team problems ... coaching error (use of TO and play call with 4:20 to go) ... where was Mario down the stretch?
The best offense in the SEC? Turn your television to CBS.
That is a good question fsj, because I bet Florida is closing in on them, if not ahead after today. Georgia has the number one quarterback and runningback in the SEC. Since the Ole Miss game, I would guess Florida has been the best offense.
barkley, never let facts get in the way of CBS.
Chuckster ... you're right.
Gators the best ... probably best team in America.
Plus they go for it on 4th and 1 up 42-3. Gotta love it.
I wondered about Mario down the stretch, but that fade route on our next to last drive was what disappointed me the most. I had been expecting them to role Burns out and give him a chance to pass or scramble for the first down.
I agree Florida may be the best team in the nation now, although they didn't look like it earlier in the season.
Steve, did you miss the Florida-Georgia game?
Keep your hopes alive ... rule No. 1. ... A play that has a 5 percent chance of being successful on 4th and 2 is a pretty dumb call in my book.
All that after wasting a timeout ... which you had to know would be precious.
I am starting to think Florida will beat Bama in the SECCG.
STarting? Mr. Sensi ... I've been there.
Be back ...
gone to get pizza for Turbo Prop and his buddies
49 points on one of the best defenses in the SEC.
Jet, what can I say? Better late (and beer) than never
I wanna hear what the Bama fans have to say about their chances against the Gators after this game (vs. USC).
All I've heard so far is, "They haven't seen a defense like ours yet!"
All I can think is you haven't faced an offense like theirs (Florida's) yet...
For all the statistic experts in da house, how does SC's defense compare to Bama's?
lovecrafty,
I'll tell you what I think.
We will be a decided underdog. HOWEVER, don't count us out.
Ole Miss punched UF in the mouth. They were physical with UF, and they didn't like it too well. Alabama is going to try to do the same thing.
Will it be enough...I'm not sure. However, if anybody can beat them, Alabama can.
The Bama fans are on top of the world. Isn't there still one more game before the SEC championship?
Bama fans are pleased with how the season has gone thus far. However, we have two regular season games left that are awfully important.
There's plenty of time after the Auburn game to worry about the SEC Championship game and whatever game that may come after that.
I think you're right fsj, there are probably only 2 or 3 teams who can match up with and beat Florida. Bama, Texas, and maybe Oklahoma, and all of them would need to play a near-perfect game to beat them.
But hey, that's why they get out there on the field each Saturday. I guess we'll find out who's the best on Dec. 6th.
No doubt. If we played them 10 times we may only win one. Hopefully that one will be in the championship game.
You don't think USC or Texas Tech could beat Florida?
Hey all. I just got back in from the game today. I was very happy with the effort today, even though I questioned it after the first to drives by Georgia. This team faught today and almost came up with the W. Auburn fans should be proud of the kids on the team. I am.
FSJ- better watch out :).
I am heading to the new James Bond movie. I will catch up later.
Back to AU and coaching for a second now that Florida has finished gutting and boning their chickens...
Here is Tuberville's yearly record as a head coach:
Ole Miss:
1995 6-5
1996 5-6
1997 8-4
1998 6-5
(Before anyone starts talking about what an impressive job he did at Ole Miss, I suggest they go back and look at the teams the vast majority of those wins came against.)
Auburn:
1999 5-6
2000 9-4
2001 7-5
2002 9-4
2003 8-5
2004 13-0
2005 9-3
2006 11-2
2007 9-4
2008 5-6
Tuberville is a consistent 4-5 loss coach. The outliers are the years with fewer than four losses. He's simply regressing to his mean here at AU. Tale out 2004 (hats off to Al Borges for knowing what to do with that talent), 2005 and 2006 (it was a nice three year stretch) and the picture that's left is the accurate one. This is why he needs to go.
I do congratulate Tuberville for his ability to manage perceptions, to become the highest paid medicore coach in all of college football and for having a winning lotto ticket built into his contract if he is fired. (Cash that ticket, coach!)
After reading today's blog the following conclusion: Steve from Columbia = CTT's press secretary
Good post Roman. I went back and looked at Tuberville's record at Ole Miss the other day and I was wondering why in the world he was ever hired. His record there was horrible.
Anonymous, you are a liar.
rowan, please post a 10 year stretch where Auburn has done better.
"barkley for govenor said...
Steve, did you miss the Florida-Georgia game?"
No, I didn't. Why do you ask?
So because Auburn hasn't done better, it means accept it?
Gosh I hope that's not how everyone feels.
I wonder if Jay got lost.
I asked because you said that Georgia has the best offense in the SEC. I don't understand what makes you believe that.
Accept what?
Just the ranking prior to this weekend, but don't let facts get in your way.
1981 Auburn 5-6-0
1982 Auburn 9-3-0
1983 Auburn 11-1-0
1984 Auburn 9-4-0
1985 Auburn 8-4-0
1986 Auburn 10-2-0
1987 Auburn 9-1-2
1988 Auburn 10-2-0
1989 Auburn 10-2-0
1990 Auburn 8-3-1
Pat Dye without his last two yrs.
How many four and five losses there? Without Bammer on probabation
Ok well prior to this weekend, why did you think Georgia's offense was better than Florida's?
How many years did he play 12 games. That is the only period in the history of Auburn football that can compare, and I don't see an undefeated season in the bunch.
The number one passer in the SEC might have something to do with it. The number one runningback in the SEC could also have something to do with it.
What did the undefeated season get - his ONLY SEC championship
Here are the stats from the SEC. Florida has a slight lead.
http://www.pdfdownload.org/pdf2html/pdf2html.php?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.secsports.com%2Fdoc_lib%2Ffbc_2008_stats.pdf&images=yes
I don't think Urban Meyer minds having Tim Tebow handing it off to Percy Harvin, or Will Demps, or Chris Rainey, or Emmanuel Moody.
Oh well, we all have an opinion. I was just a bit surprised anyone would take any offense over Florida's this year.
Anon,
Am I to assume you would have called for Dye's head in his 5th season? At that point I'd believe he would have been what you would term a consistent 4 loss coach.
Give it up Charles - you are trying to have a rationale discussion with someone that contradicts his every other three or four statements
Urban is an idiot for having Tebow in the game when they're up by 30 + points late in the game.
Man I hate that other team.
I'm home now -- back on the internets.
I'll create a new thread.
Florida's offense is better than Georgia's.
(I'm not finished writing.)
Statistically, it is a vertual dead heat, but I don't think there are many teams playing better than Florida now, possibly Texas or Texas Tech, but that is about it.
