All we have are the embers

Thanks for a great, 2.5-hour campfire tonight.

That's a record.

Topics were varied. The BANHAMMER was dropped. President Bush stopped by.

All in all, a good time.

What would our record be if the CTF experiment would never have taken place and Kodi Burns would have been QB from the start of the season with Al Borges or some other traditional running coordinator?

I'll take the H.A.B.O.T.N. for $500 please, Alex.

Phred, whatever happened the the H.A.B.O.T.N. theme song based on the old Dr. Pepper them song??

We were supposed to have that recorded.

Let me get my pointless prediction out there two weeks in advance. Auburn will nearly upset Alabama in two weeks. But Ben Tate will be called upon to catch a corner route in the back of the endzone with 2 seconds left and his slow twitch attempt to make the play falls short. Otherwise, Fannin will have averaged 11 yards per TOUCH with a lofty 10 TOUCHES.

Tuberville is finished. Is he not? See that post game interview? Ho hum wh cares attitude was gracious.

What was sad to see after the game was no emotion from the coach once again. He can obviously coach, when he wants too. Will he put a game plan together for the Tide? lets hope so, becasue if he does it will be a good game.

Any word on why Fannin was out in the 4th

Did yall see the picture of how close tate was to catching the pass?

Would have been good payback for 2002.

8:10 AM
Blogger ADP said...

I have a snapshot in my mind. It was right in front of me. It hit his hands, but would he have been in bounds?

I don't know who else Kodi could have thrown it to, but right before the snap, Tate leaned into Kodi and they talked. I'm thinking he said, "throw me the ball."

8:16 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

ScottATL, I wish it had been somebody with a little more athletic ability back there. Tate has good hands when you throw it to him. Some bending of the knees is needed on those most of the time.

8:16 AM
Blogger dan dan the AU fan said...

Crudup, that comment was nothing but sarcasm. I was really just complaining about what seemed like 8+ consecutive fade routes thrown on the last two drives when obviously neither Kodi nor the receivers could work together to complete one. Fannin should have lined up in the slot if he can't pick up the block at RB. And on 3rd and one lets run a play that's designed to get a first and possibly a TD, then throw or run for the endzone.

8:21 AM
Blogger ADP said...

Y'all - Fannin can block just fine. This not blocking thing, to use a crudupism, was just CTF's "catfish sounds good" way of saying "I don't want to play him."

So, now that CTF said that, we all think he can't block. Bunch of HS. HS stands for what comes out of the rear end of a horse.

8:27 AM
Blogger scottatl said...

Nevertheless, I was proud of the guys yesterday. Is there any truth that Fannin's ankle was hurt, and thats why he didnt play toward the end?

8:28 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agreed. Play calling left much to be desired. Sadly, it's better than Franklin was doing.

8:37 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

How bad was the wind at the end of the game? I know it was pretty bad earlier.

If it was still that bad, then any pass where you put that much air under it like Kodi does on those fades is a bad choice.

I know Fannin wasn't in because Tate is a better pass blocker, but on that last play, obviously Tate wasn't being used as a blocker, so get your playmaker out there.

8:44 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

If the Franklin thing never happened we'd be at worst 9-2, probably 10-1. I think we still probably lose that WVU game.

That would mean we'd be 7-0 in the SEC playing Alabama for the West.

8:45 AM
Blogger scottatl said...

rk,

Thats what I was thinking, its a shame to think of it that way. I guess you can give CTT for letting CTF go when he did. A pitiful consolation though.

9:03 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The schedule really set up nice this year for us to make a good run of it...however one bad hire sent a lot of things downhill.

Nobody stepped up and rallied the troops when things didn't look good. However even without an offensive leader, as long as we executed properly under Borges we would have a really good record this year.

9:07 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Tub gets credit for letting Franklin go when he did, but he also takes the blame for it happening in the first place.

I don't know if he'll get a chance to make another potential mistake like that.

9-2 or 10-1? Really?

9:19 AM

I'd say 8-3, scott. 9-2 best. The losses to Vandy, Arkansas, and Ole Miss would not have happened. LSU is a toss up. But continuing our physical ways I don't see us losing that one.

Fannin is that player. The next coach whether it's a HC or OC will not pass Mario by.

Upperclassmen in '09:

Fannin
Tate (have to)
Billings
Burns
Caudle (have to- he's talented)
Slaughter
Zachary
Kenney
Pugh
Ziemba (have to)

Hot
Coleman (hopefully)
Gray (have to)
Stevens
Bynes
Freeman
Powers*
McFadden*
Savage*

Marks is outie- no question

What I'm getting at is the right coach and a little chemistry and '09 has tons of potential.

Could be that championship season that was predicted this year. The QB position will be much better. The O-line should be 30 lbs heavier each mean like they were prior to "Spread". I reallly like Rod Smith. But erasing him as the go to guy and replacing him with bigger guys that should be able to find the endzone more often could be nice.

Something I could hear Tubs saying this week ...

"Well, we didn't want to put Mario in the game during the fourth because we really didn't want to have any big plays and score too quick. We wanted a long, grinding drive. We just felt like with Fannin in there, we might score on a 50 yard run, and that would leave too much time on the clock. Hey, pass the catfish will you?"

Watching the Fannin runs again. Just hard to believe Gran and Crew have this guy on the bench. He's prototypical Auburn tailback to the Nth. The vision and those cutbacks in the open field are top notch. And he can run you over.

I still don't get it and I won't buy it until a new coach of some sort is here.

Have a question for the hottie's. Since we have one game left how do you see the rest of the season going? Also what changes do you want, or see happening? And how do you think those changes will benefit AU? I guess those are multiple questions.

My response is this, although I think tubbs has done great job at auburn I think it is time for a change. The ten year mark is tough to overcome. Things tend to get stale. If this was his 7th year I would want him to stay. Changing oc's again is only going to buy time for the next year or two. Every competitor will use "he will only be there 1 more year against us" and we do not need that. Even if he comes back next year and goes undefeated how many more years does he have in the tank? I f he does stay I see a beamer or fulmer situation. Up one down two. So I see a close lose to bama and changes to come.

10:45 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Nah, I had us going 9-3. Expected a rough start because of the offensive changes but that we would get better as the year went on, winning the UGA and UAT games. Uhh..whoops.

10:56 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

KJ- I'll take the Beamer situation all day long. They win conference championships. It is too hard to keep a team completely dominant from one year to the next. Look at Florida, up one / down one / up one. That is what you can expect with good coaching and good recruiting. No team is ever up for several years consistantly. The closest team to that is Ohio State and USC but look at the competition they play. That says it all.

11:13 AM
Blogger Denny Crum said...

10-1 or 9-2 with Borges. Lose to Wva for sure and maybe maybe not to LSU.

11:19 AM
Blogger Denny Crum said...

Troy's implosion against LSU didn't prove that the CTF spread can't hold leads against talent, but it did offer additional evidence to support that contention.

11:20 AM

Willie J: what kind of buzz have you heard about recruiting visits from yesterday?

11:25 AM
Blogger KJtiger said...

eddie You make a valid point, my comparison with beamer is that he has been there a long time and you are right they are always in contention to win their conference, so maybe bad example. so I would take that too, the point I was trying to make is we never seem to be in contention if we win or lose the LSU game if we win and feel good we lose to ARk, or ole miss so it all comes back to coaching.

For the "Tuberville deserves to try and turn this thing around because he is having one bad year" crowd.

SEC record in the last 20 games:

10-10 (3 wins over teams that ended with a winning season)

That is going back to the Arkansas game in 2006. It's more than just this year folks. We have been average at best and I don't see any reason we will do any better next year with Tuberville.

Blogger scott,will not,from tucson said...

regarding speculation about running last year's offense this year, if dreams and wishes, were pork chops and fishes, you'd still need armed guards to pry the coaching staff away from the bbq to come up with a gameplan.

12:18 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I posted this a couple of days ago but could not go back through all the post to find the answer:

The info used for getting rid of Tubbs is that he has had 4 or more losses in 7 of the 10 seasons he has been at AU. How does this compare with other coaches that were at their school for 7-10 years?

BTW- I think Tubbs should stay, but would take C Peterson form Boise State if he is gone.

12:36 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jay- I saw where Tulsa went down hard. Hard to overcome 5 turnovers. They still racked up 541yards though.

If Tubbs stays I vote Malzahn as OC. I bet he has Fanninn in at the end of the game. He would probably have gone for the first down on the next to last drive also.

12:41 PM

Did anyone notice that when KB scrammbled hot one receiver broke downfield from his route? As KB scrambled to his right, they all drifted to the right until three of them were standing next to the out of bounds marker. They just stopped. Our WR coach is the worst in the universe.

12:43 PM
Blogger Chris in Inverness said...

To hire the Boise coach would be a catastrophy. NO TIES to the south would kill recruiting.

I hope the people in charge put it plain to Tuberville - Hire an OC and let him bring in ANYONE and EVERYONE he wants or SEE YA.

I think recruiting is the key to this thing not X's and O's. A coach who can get kids excited about coming to AU and rally the APETHETIC fan base needs to be hired.

Either a young up'n comer or a NAME guys.

And call freakin RODNEY GARNER and ask him to "come home".

Chris,

If a guy can recruit, it doesn't matter where he is from. Nick Saban and Urban Meyer had no ties to the south when they were hired but they seem to have figured it out. I don't know much about Peterson other than the fact that he is a winner and can coach his kids up. Good enough for me.

1:46 PM

Chris,

CTT was a good hire. Whatever happens, CTT or the new guy needs to run the football like we have since 1981 (a couple of bowden years non-withstanding). That is how you win at Auburn. Chris Peterson? Now Meyer is a bit different because UF kind of recruits itself. There's probably no other University in the nation like UF - imho.

I just don't want AU to limit themselves to folks with HC experienmce if a young OC or DC is available ala Ritch and Stoops.

I thionk Muschamp has the HS connections here and would work as hard as anyone.

Brent Venables at Okla is another.

APATHY can kill a program and CTT has seemed to have lost his edge - again, opinion. Will he be willing to cut 3 or 4 coaches loose if mandated?

I'm sure that the Boise guy has great numbers out there but so did the guy before him that's sucking it up at Colorado.

Its not a slam dunk that sucess at Boise trsanslates to sucess anywhere else.
