LIVE -- Auburn (men) vs. Bethune-Cookman, 2nd half

We're reporting LIVE from the big Auburn vs. Bethune-Cookman College game at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.

AUBURN WINS, 61-46

A TO @ 5:05:
Auburn leads, 53-33. I can't really watch. It's just a bunch of guys playing very poorly and with no conviction.

THIRD TO @ 9:07:
Auburn leads, 44-33. You can see the numbers; BCC is on quite a run here. Auburn is just sloppy sloppy sloppy. No flow on offense. Tripping over themselves. BCC is hitting some difficult shots.

SECOND TO @ 11:55:
Auburn leads, 40-22. You'd think ... Auburn up 18? Not bad., but you'd be wrong. It's bad. It's just that BCC is mind-numbingly terrible.

FIRST TO @ 15:36:
Auburn leads, 34-19. Auburn lost the ball on three of its first four possessions of the half. Not good. BCC still doesn't have a field goal this half. Not much going on, honestly.

INTERESTING HALFTIME STATS:
Shooting
AUB, 41%
BCC, 28%

Rebounds
AUB, 17
BCC, 15

Penn State? Texas again? Non-Pac 10 champ USC? Florida?

Where you been all these years? Those teams are the most fundamentally depleted teams in all of college basketball.

Why do you think Vandy and Florida recruit kids who know how to play basketball? Makes the job a little easier.

I'm with you, buddy. I can't stand to watch Auburn play basketball anymore. I feel like I could make a difference out there in my mid 30s.

Mr. Ate, why do you refer to Ball State as "Gap in Teeth?" Aren't they in Indiana, not W Va?

9:09 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't have theories for Bama fans. Just facts. And you can accurately, safely, and conveniently call 9 out of 10 that you avoid like the plague "sidewalk alum".

The streak of 6 happened during their "down years". The streak of 9 happened in their king of the world days when the bowl games rarely mattered.

Beating Auburn, for Alabama, means getting things back to normal even though Auburn holds a considerable advantage in the series over the last 25 years when the word "mandate" started to mean at least something. For Auburn, beating Alabama means peace and quite for the next twelves months.

That's all.

I'm tired of piss poor basketball around here. Good basketball is important to overcoming the pain or extending the glee tranferred from the football season. Plus, it gives your wife something else to roll her eyes over. Always critical to the man's mission.

Crudup,

There is no reason on earth why Alabama and Auburn should be as bad as they are in basketball.

Both have decent size cities within an hour drive from campus. Fan support should be there.

Surely, basketball on the high school level in state isn't this bad.

9:24 PM
Blogger Jet said...

FSJ ... it is, and don't call me Shirley.

UAT -- better facilites ... better recruiting ... horrible coaching ... Gottfried is stealing.

AU -- cardboard box facilities ... recruiting always weak ... good x and o coach.

I'm convinced if you put Lebo at a perennially strong program, he's a superstar. He's just not cut out to make chicken salad out of chicken scratch.

Now, I await the blowback.

9:27 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree that Gottfried is stealing. Hopefully he will be done soon.

Auburn's facility issue should be fixed soon. I bet that will help with recruiting.

Blogger michael said...

Look, I like basketball as much as the next guy, I follow the NBA and play regularly and all that. But college basketball is closer to the category of swimming than it is to college football in importance level to me. And the fact that a majority of fans are like me is the reason basketball will always be up and down (mostly down) at Auburn and Alabama. Why would a basketball player go to a school where b-ball is second place when he could go to Duke or Indiana or UNC or Kansas or Memphis or a billion other football first schools?

9:35 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I certainly hope it helps ... but fannies in the seats have to be there, too.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

WTC- Have you not seen our red zone offense. The trick play is that we can play our way to there and not score.

8:35 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I thought the trick play was us running the zone read with Tate over and over...eventually they won't expect it!

8:42 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I recall running the double reverse, naked bootleg, or something like that after recovering an onside kick and they threw us for a huge loss. I do not believe a reverse has gained a yard all season. You kow with "8 men in the box".

That one is for Monica & Greg.

8:45 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

The last time I remember a reverse working for us really well, was the 2005 Iron Bowl when Obamanu took to the house...man that was a fun game.

8:47 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

wtc, in terms of trick plays, the onsider kick against WVU worked great. Of course, the following reverse to nowhere kind of counteracted that.

The YMCA guys on the sidelines seems to have worked well in terms of causing confusion, although I am not quite sure which team was the most confused.

The hook part of the hook and lateral against LSU worked great.

Somehow, I don't think we will use a lot of trick plays. Somehow we need to find a playmaker on offense, especially in the redzone. Kodi is improving, but in terms of passing he hasn't reached Chris Todd levels yet, so it seems hard to think we could rely on him.

I think we need to see a breakout game from one of the backs, probably Lester or Fannin. Either that or Slaughter and Smith need to have a great game. Maybe McKenzie can make a difference.

8:49 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

We should also avoid running that bubble, or bumble screen, if at all possible.

8:55 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

The bubble screen has worn out its welcome, everytime someone sets it up, I cringe and wait to see the aftermath.

8:58 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

We should avoid running all screens for that matter.

My favorite screen of the year that I have seen was the screen Georgia ran against us on 3rd down and somehow the grass tripped up Moreno. That was a great screen design.

9:06 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Where I see us having potential is possibly running some option football. Kodi isn't there as a passing QB yet and the scramble isn't going to win the game for us, but if Kodi could learn to run the option, it might loosen things up a bit.

Also, I would like to see a fullback, possibly Tate or Davis. People underestimate the value of that inside handoff and the treat would slow down the linebackers pursuing the tailbacks.

The linebackers are apparently Alabama's weakness on defense. Passing the ball over the middle occasionally would be nice, especially when they start crowding the line. That is one of the things I have noticed this season. As the game goes on, the opposing linebackers tend to line up closer and closer to the line.

9:08 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

The inside screen (where the WR comes into the line and is sipposed to turn it up) scares me. Is that the bubble screen? Looks lie it will be intercepted everytime. We ran it form our own 5 yard line once and I thought the DB caught (other side of the field from my seats) it.

The wheel route has worked the couple of times we threw it. As did the outside screen to the RB. But as usual this year, if it has success we dump it and move to another play.

9:09 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Steve, I concur. McKenzie crossing the middle is a good play. He will catch it if it not thrown behind him.

9:11 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

wtc, the bubble screen is when we have multiple receivers on one side, usually three. Two of them block while the other takes a step back, catches the ball, and prepares to be tackled.

9:12 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

What was the killer for us offensively early in the season was the Ziemba starts before everyone else play. The QB wasn't the issue early on. Putting ourselves in long yardage situation was. We cannot afford many penalties.

9:20 AM
Blogger Jet said...

Personally, I've tried to avoid the boy in the bubble.

I just don't want to see the option into the short side of the field.

It's hard to say anything good about Bryant, but there was a great story from that book a few years ago, 'War in Dixie' where the authors shared a story of an encounter between Bear and Shug when Jordan was battling cancer late in his life.

After the two met and parted ways, Bryant told another person who was with him that that man (Shug) has more courage in his pinky finger than I got in my entire body. I am paraphrasing so I may not have the exact quote, but I always think of that story come the week of the Iron Bowl and it makes me smile.

As a long time listener (20 years) I must say that Finebaum has stepped over the line a number of times this year...for example, when a Florida caller was talking trash this week, FInebaum actually responded by saying '12 national championships' worst moment ever on his show...i was actually embarrassed for him

Finebaum grew up an Alabama fan. I heard him admit it on his show. It was around December of 2001 or 2002. He said that the only reason he went to Tennessee was because his family couldn't afford out of state tuition.

Now...I think that Finebaum is a Finebaum fan first, but if he had to pick, he would pick Alabama.

My 1st Iron Bowl was as good as it gets for a 1st time. 1989. I was in 8th grade and one of my classmates brother was playing at Auburn and I got to go with their family.

I've been in 89, 93, 94-97, 99, 00-03 & 05.

So I've been to 12.

My favorite was 93, because when White went down and it was 4th and 15 it all looked like it was going downhill, then Nix hit Sanders for the TD and it was on after that.

11:42 AM
Blogger FSJ said...

Regarding the 93 game, the worst thing that happened to Alabama was Stan White getting hurt. I'm convinced that had he stayed in the game Alabama wins.

second thing I hate about bama. I hate the way the bama nation has managed to dilute 6 in a row..jay barker made a comment saying that AU beating bama 6 in a row is like beating one legged man b/c bama was on probation..while I'm not stupid to think that the probation gave us an advantage 6 in a row iss an incrdieble feat probation or not...

Well, Bama minimizing the six in a row has been hilarious. We would have never won except their coaches sucked and players sucked. I have heard those excuses for years now, but if your own fans believe your coaches suck and your players suck, what does that say about Alabama?

I know it's Iron Bowl week, but it is also the start of Duck Season in Alabama. I'm stoked about that also.

Well, Bama fans do not have any trouble celebrating nine in a row from 73-81 despite our program being down then. Besides, I think six in a row in this modern day environment of great parity within college football is more impressive than their nine myself.

Who else has beaten Bama six times in a row over the last decade. LSU had a chance to match this year and failed. Six in a row is six in a row and I have not lost any sleep over the subject since 2002.

Thanks FSJ; growing up in Tennessee I was certainly aware of that streak (and loved it too), but I was talking more of who else has done what Auburn has done this decade from 2000-present. Sorry, should have been more specific.

It's funny, though, that UT's 7 game winning streak followed after Bama had 9 or 10 game unbeaten streak against them, not taking into account the 1993 game that later forfeited or whatever.

12:26 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

FSJ- I think Michael was referring to nobody else winning 6 in a row in the same time span as we have done it. Since most Bama fans (NOT YOU FSJ) claim that it is such an easy task, then why are we the only ones to do so?

Don't forget, it is very possible we will be finished installing our offense by Saturday. This game could end up being very interesting. LSU gave Bama a tough game and LSU has been on the decline. It appears their starting QB didn't retain all the training we gave him.

Let's see: Kodi's learnin', the D is getting well, Bama's looking ahead to the SECCG....I feel better now than I did after the WVa game.
