LIVE -- Tuberville press conference, 11/30
Head coach Tommy Tuberville is meeting with reporters via teleconference today. We're providing a blow-by-blow account.
- "The sun did come up; it didn't come up until about noon."
- "I thought we had a good game plan."
- "The bright spot of our day was our punter."
- "Offensively, we didn't do anything to give our defense any hope at all. We had no drives. We had no big plays."
- "You could tell that (Alabama) wanted to end that streak and they did."
- "I plan on being here. It's an opportunity the coaches look to know that we can get the job done. We've done it eight out of 10 years in terms of getting the job done."
- On is Kevin Scarbinsky's column alleging that Tuberville already gaining official affirmation from Jay Gogue is true: "I have no clue where that came from. No."
- On Lee Ziemba needing off-season surgery: "He's a tough young man who wanted to go through the season. Overall, considering the knee, I thought he had an outstanding sophomore season."
- On Paul Rhoads and Utah State: "We've talked to some people from out there. There's been just a little bit of talk about that; not much. That'll be up to him. He really likes it here."
- On their recruiting: "On guys who had shown any sense of (wondering) if I'll be here or not, I want to meet with them first. It'll be this week."
- On OC changes: "I want to give him the freedom to bring someone in. We've got to have an offensive coordinator who feels comfortable with what he wants to do. I've not been around too many coordinators that had people that they wanted to bring, but obviously, we've got to do something on offense and we're going to. We're going to get the problem solved. We're going to get some consistency."
- More on the OC situation: "You've got to make sure coaches can work with other coaches. There's more than hiring a guy and turning them loose. There has to be a sense of philosophy among all of them. We haven't had a consistent offense in a long time. This time, we're going to get someone who understands this program."
- "They've got to be experienced; I don't want to train someone. We're past that point. A lot of people have said in the past that I've forced assistants on people. That's not the case."
- "I don't have any front-runners. I don't have any leaders. It's not going to happen overnight. This thing probably won't happen until after the first of the year."
- FINAL EXCHANGE
- Q: So you say that your No. 1 priority is to talk with the recruits who are worried about your future here?
- A: "That's correct."
- Q: Is this going to happen before or after you talk with Gogue/Jacobs?
- A: "It depends on when we talk. Recruiting starts this week and that's what we're doing now."
- Q: How can you give recruits an affirmation when you don't have one yourself?
- A: "I'm going like I've got a contract here. I'm working and as I said last night there's no doubt that we can get this thing turned back around. I didn't turn into a bad coach overnight. I know this program better than anybody. I know what it takes. I know the type of people that you can get to come in. I know their strengths, I know their weaknesses and I'm fully committed to doing it. I'm going out and selling that."
- Q: So you say that your No. 1 priority is to talk with the recruits who are worried about your future here?

Hoopie, I'm not so sure you should spend your spare time following blogs or internet forums regarding Auburn football. You seem to get way to irritated with other poster's opinions, and instead of giving your own, you just criticize them and act like you are above them.
We just capped off a 5-7 season with a 36-0 loss to our rival that we haven't lost to in six years. We didn't even compete. We lost to teams we shouldn't have lost to. We are paying two coordinators who don't even work for us. We are getting worked in recruiting. We are unsure if we will even have the same head coach next year.
I think the fans have a right to be disappointed. If you don't like the way they express their disappointment, why don't you just ignore them?
Amen barkley.......
lots of displaced aggression here, folks. hoopie makes a valid point. i'm as upset as anyone else could be, but i will not disparage the players. some of the (many of the) offensive play calls, lack of pressure on the qb, etc., were issues, but every coach wanted to win this game for au. how many other flagship schools had miserable years? michigan , notre dame, tennessee, lsu. i wouldn't trade places with any of them. i'll be back pullin for my au tigers next year. BEAT BAMA!
Honestly, I think it was a fitting ending to a very terrible season. Seriously big time reality check. We needed one. The only thing left to do now is, get real and get it done. Nothing like a few butt whoopin's to make you re-think your strategy. I hope that the facts, and I don't know exactly what they are, will become obvious to the decision makers and that clearer heads will prevail. It's a dangerous precipice we are on right now. Impulsiveness = Doom.
Hoopie,
1st off, this is nothing close to anything I've ever seen on AL.com's forums. If it is, then it's improved greatly over the past year.
2nd, people are frustrated and expressing their opinions. Everyone has a different point of view on this. Most of us were patient until the 36-0 disaster on Saturday.
I agree with Denny in that had it been 22-14 or something like that, there wouldn't be this type of frustration. However Tommy Tuberville and Nick Saban both had two weeks to prepare for this game and we see what happened. Then coach comes out and talks in circles the day after and it causes some people to really question what is going on. If that's not you, then fine.
We need some WR help soon! Doesn't look to be much help on the way next year either unfortunately. Most our WR recruits are under 6 foot like they have been for years now.
We need help everywhere right now. This team is going to be lucky to win 8 games next year. I would expect another season close to .500 honestly. I have no more confidence in this coaching staff.
Denny,
You think 8 wins is a successful season? Jesus, I might be supporting the wrong team.
Hoopie,
I think people are using facts to back up their side of the argument. You dont agree with them so you see it as nastiness. I dont see how any sane individual can look at Tubberville's record and say he is an above average coach. The numbers just arent there.
As far as hiring a new OC, does nobody see a problem here?
People are nervous about the PTB firing Tubbs and making the wrong HC hire, so they are happy to stay with what we have.
NEWSFLASH: Our current head coach, who will be hiring the new OC, JUST HIRED HIS LAST OC WITHOUT EVEN INTERVIEWING THE GUY!!! What in God's name makes people think he is going to make the right decision this time?
Everyone is concerned that we will make a mistake hiring a new coach (based on nothing) but they have no problem letting Tubbs hire the next OC (overlooking the fact that he just made the epic blunder or hiring/ firing the last one).
Some people lack rationale, I guess.
Changing the subject, is this the day that Jay said layoff notices come out for the Advertiser? Let's keep Jay in our prayers. Jay is the best at keeping us informed. This is definitely the best Auburn site!
Everyone else is an idiot!
Didn't Jay imply that Tuberville had no choice in the hiring of Franklin? Wasn't Franklin "suggested" to Tuberville, according to Jay. If that is the case, I don't think I want them "suggesting" our next new HC either!
IM4AU- The only one suggesting Franklin was Eddie Gran. Maybe he is the one running the show.
Well there was one truth that was told before the start of the season. We talked all year about how our offense would wear a defense down by being on the field for 70 plays and by the end of the game they would be tired.
They just didn't say the defense that we would be wearing down was our own by keeping them on the field for 70 plays a game.
Technically we weren't being lied to.
Eddie, yesterday Jay wrote:
"My thing is: What does that have to do with anything? I've told you all both here and on the radio that Franklin was "suggested" to Tuberville from people on the inside."
I asked him who the people were on the inside and never got an answer. I didn't think he meant Gran. Whoever made that "suggestion" didn't have a clue. Does anyone have a clue in Auburn's powers to be???
"People on the inside" don't need to be identified.
They didn't make the Franklin decision. Tuberville made the decision. I'm just pointing out that Franklin was recommended, if you will, and so the people who vouched for him aren't in position to clamor for Tuberville's ouster based on Franklin fallout.
See what I'm saying there?
Also, layoff notices are due out this week. We'll just keep worrying and waiting. I think Gannett (our parent company) likes it this way; they've done it twice this year.
Thanks Jay for the explanation. I was on the Tuberville bandwagon. I'm "old school" Auburn. We're use to hanging onto a coach long past his heyday! I laughed at AL when they paid the big bucks to Satan, but they have had a tremendous return on their investment! We have a huge investment in Tommy and all of our previous OCs, I just want to see the same return. It's not too much to expect. Anyway, good luck to you and your family this week. My company issued warn notices right before Thanksgiving. Fortunately no one I know got a notice. These here are scarey times.
Monday, still sucks. We had more punts than first downs. Seriously.
I hold Paul Rhoads just as accountable as I do CTT and CTF.
Jay, all the bama fans are upset about the dive block Ryan Pugh gave to the back of Luther Davis's legs. Have you seen it?
Did Tuberville address it yesterday?
Do you think Pugh was intentional?
Iowa State demotes coordinators McFarland, Bolt; 2 assistants fired...Iowa State football coach Gene Chizik is making big changes to his coaching staff after the Cyclones' dismal 2-10 season.
Auburn needs to make changes and soon. I can't even get excited about next season.
Earlier in November a local radio host brought out some interesting facts. Tubbs now has 7 out of 10 years with 4 or more losses. Yet AU fans think he is a very good coach. He asked are the sevem 4+ loss seasons an anomoly or the norm.
I've been a big supportrer, but after reviewing this info time and again, I'm decided to get on the fence of supporting him.
I'll support AU, but how far are we willing to go in our support?
Best wishes on the job front Jay G.
I wouldn't blame you for bolting ASAP.
Is the Paul Rhodes to Utah State stuff just rumor or real?
"This time, we're going to get someone who understands this program."
I take that as someone who can work with the staff in place.
Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford ARRESTED
Incognito- Utah State stuff is real. Utah State has approached Tubs about Rhoads.
Incognito I do not understand what there is to understand about AU. Does that mean we go back to 3 yrds and a cloud of dust. I think most AU fans just want an offense to score point and look capable and competent. The more I think about it we spent 2 wks to have 170 yrds on offense. I bet he could have let the players off for two weeks and done just as well.
I'll take 3 yrds and a cloud of dust compared to the chuck and duck we ran this year.
I will call it run, run, chuck, punt offense. This year. Remember this years "O" is "live to punt".
Question for the CTT supporters- what would be your expectations for a successful season next year? I don't wish to argue about keeping him, my comments in other threads speak my opinion. Just wondering what the Keep CTT supporters have in mind for next season.
Expectations?
Well, looking at the schedule with what is returning/coming in, I expect the following:
9/5: West Virginia - Loss (they still have a good D and we'll be new on O again)
9/12: Mississippi State - Win, MSU is bad
9/19: Kentucky - Win, D is good enough to win it
9/26: Ball State - Win but probably very close
10/3: @Tennessee - Loss, talented young coach, focused players, UT has advantages of playmakers
10/10: @Arkansas - Loss, Petrinoball will be in full force
10/17: Southern Miss - Win, AU better on D, O should be in some stride
10/24: @LSU - Win, Miles has lost that team.
10/31: Ole Miss - Loss, Nutt will have that bunch rolling next year and he has a winning rec. against Tubs.
11/7: Furman - Win, cupcake like UTM
11/14: @Georgia - Loss, assuming Stafford/Moreno return, but Richt is close to losing that team
11/21: OPEN
11/28: Alabama - Toss Up, kinda depends on injuries and how much Bama misses 9 seniors and 1 junior they'll lose this year.
Depressed:
Each year I look for us to go undefeated. That is what I want. I know not eveyrone can go undefeated. A successful season, short of the main goal, is 10 wins, and controlling our own destiny in November for a trip to ATL and on to the NC game.
If we do not get that next year, then we are not sucessful, IMO. I have high expectations each year. Been disappointed a lot. I can not say will or will not get there in '09. Too early for me.
WTC,
Right now you can't even expect the team to be ready even with two weeks of preparation so it's impossible to have expectations of controlling your own destiny in November.
RK-I understand. I just stated what I expect. Will that happen. Too early. It didn't happen this year. So I was disappointed for the 7th out of 10 years.
Incognito, during the postgame interview on AU network, Tubs said quite plainly he was going to let the new OC bring in some of his own people. No coach speak. Those were essentially his exact words. So I think some changes will be made there.
I see it this way: probable wins- miss st, ball st, so miss, furman. Probable losses- w virginia, tenn, arkansas, ole miss, georgia and bama. toss-ups: kentucky, lsu. I just don't see how the program gets momentum back taking a realistic view of the schedule. Would 7-5 satify TPTB that CTT can turn this sinking ship around? I don't think so. Maybe their plan is for a more attractive HC candidate to be avaliable next season, but I think they are simply dragging out what must be done. Regardless, I will be pulling for AU. I would rather see CTT turn it around, but I just don't see it.
No offense to the HOTTIES, who are awesome, but prognosticating 2009 games without an OC or new signees enrolled is weird to me.
A million things will happen between now and then. A majority of them will be beneficial to the program. They have to be; the situation is remarkably messy right now.
Jay, I agree with you 100%. First things first, we have to wait and see what happens in the annual review meeting. Then we await word on the new OC/current staff evaluations assuming CTT is retained. If he's not there is the entire coaching search to consider. Once those things are established, it will be on to signing day and evaluating our recruiting class. All I know is, it will be a tough time waiting on all that news to hit and then trying to figure out which direction the ship is sailing once these events occur. I am as disappointed as any of the other fans but we have to maintain perspective and take things one at a time.
Messy?
If this program were a book it would be entitled "Mess of the Tubervilles."
My latest lyrical creation
CTT is a Joke (To the Tune of “911 is a Joke”)
Time is going, gone
Now I hoped CTT would see a long time ago
Don't you see how late He’s reactin'
He only does and he only hire who he wants to
So get the morgue embalm the Tigers
CTT don’t care 'cause he gets paid anyway
He’s got all the power after he was betrayed
He’s good at hanging on to those no use coaches
If his job’s on the line, bet he’ll send him packin’
The last four the offense has been on stretcher
Call it the body bag spread, cause it’s dead I betcha
Call in another OC to get paid when’s fired just like the rest ya
With two weeks to prepare, you Saban’ll dissect it
Call us the kings of of the middle cause that’s how we play
Don’t run up the scores, don’t score enough anyway
Need prove, SteveFC? See the coaches’ rotation
In & out of AU so fast makes a funky situation
So get up, get, get get down
CTT is a joke in this town
We’re up, we’re mid, then we go down
And CTT wears the mediocre crown
Every season we don’t never come correct
CTT’s media blames the problems on his bum neck
He's a witness to the job never bein' done
Says fans don’t understand his special program
AU was proud, but now we’re clowing
Meanwhile champions ‘cross the state is what be crowning
We bought an offense from a pawn shop hustler
We barely even ran the plans that was on the cover
I got an idea that the future, losses will come quicker
We’ll probably ask the punter to run a flea flicker
The reason that I say that 'cause CTT
Don’t care about fans, he’ll flick you off like fleas
Then he’ll be laughing to the bank bringin’ the program to its knees
We’re losing strength, we’re not gonna go the length
Thought we could be first, but now we’re mostly tenth
AU fans wake up and smell the real flavor
CTT is a not gonna be a team saver
So get up, get, get get down
CTT is a joke in this town
We’re up, we’re mid, then we go down
And CTT wears the mediocre crown
Cobra_Commander,nicely done. That's good stuff there.
Thank you, Sean.
And I agree with Jay G, too early to predict next year's scores and games, but we ain't gonna win the BCS. I'd put money on that.
Off topic ... was anyone else glad to see the flip over the head fake field goal blow up on somebody?
Jay - Is there a date set for this year end review? I think it is also weird that he is out recruiting and questions hang in the balance. Yet I also understand, he is under contract and doing his job.
Thoughts?
Jet, yes it was nice to see for sure.
Jet- Who tried the flip over the head field goal? I bet they gave credit to LSU for that one again.
I was at Auburn when we ran it against LSU. It took us several times of practicing to get it right. I never thought it would work the way it did...too bad credit is not given where it is due.
Nebraska - Bo Pelini
Nebraska tried it, and the Colorado end rushing in swept in between the holder and the kicker and caught it on a dead run for about a 75 yards touchdown.
Good stuff from Will Collier
http://fromthebleachersblog.blogspot.com/
Eddie, i am pretty sure they said "...the fake field goal that LSU ran against Auburn.." or something similar.
I know Auburn was the first team I ever saw do it, but did we really come up with it? Who was the mastermind?
The Raiders tried one where the holder flips it between his legs to the kicker yesterday and that one blew up too.
If Boise St. and Utah joined the PAC-10, would that make the conference stronger? It would open the chance for a conf. championship game for them.
Michael- I believe Joe Pannunzio was the mastermind of that play. There is a name long forgotten about.
THANK YOU JOSH MOON!!!
dear bama fan on the air - it's expletive, not exploit
