LIVE -- Tuberville press conference, 11/30

Head coach Tommy Tuberville is meeting with reporters via teleconference today. We're providing a blow-by-blow account.

  • "The sun did come up; it didn't come up until about noon."

  • "I thought we had a good game plan."

  • "The bright spot of our day was our punter."

  • "Offensively, we didn't do anything to give our defense any hope at all. We had no drives. We had no big plays."

  • "You could tell that (Alabama) wanted to end that streak and they did."

  • "I plan on being here. It's an opportunity the coaches look to know that we can get the job done. We've done it eight out of 10 years in terms of getting the job done."

  • On is Kevin Scarbinsky's column alleging that Tuberville already gaining official affirmation from Jay Gogue is true: "I have no clue where that came from. No."

  • On Lee Ziemba needing off-season surgery: "He's a tough young man who wanted to go through the season. Overall, considering the knee, I thought he had an outstanding sophomore season."

  • On Paul Rhoads and Utah State: "We've talked to some people from out there. There's been just a little bit of talk about that; not much. That'll be up to him. He really likes it here."

  • On their recruiting: "On guys who had shown any sense of (wondering) if I'll be here or not, I want to meet with them first. It'll be this week."

  • On OC changes: "I want to give him the freedom to bring someone in. We've got to have an offensive coordinator who feels comfortable with what he wants to do. I've not been around too many coordinators that had people that they wanted to bring, but obviously, we've got to do something on offense and we're going to. We're going to get the problem solved. We're going to get some consistency."

  • More on the OC situation: "You've got to make sure coaches can work with other coaches. There's more than hiring a guy and turning them loose. There has to be a sense of philosophy among all of them. We haven't had a consistent offense in a long time. This time, we're going to get someone who understands this program."

  • "They've got to be experienced; I don't want to train someone. We're past that point. A lot of people have said in the past that I've forced assistants on people. That's not the case."

  • "I don't have any front-runners. I don't have any leaders. It's not going to happen overnight. This thing probably won't happen until after the first of the year."

  • FINAL EXCHANGE
    • Q: So you say that your No. 1 priority is to talk with the recruits who are worried about your future here?
    • A: "That's correct."

    • Q: Is this going to happen before or after you talk with Gogue/Jacobs?
    • A: "It depends on when we talk. Recruiting starts this week and that's what we're doing now."

    • Q: How can you give recruits an affirmation when you don't have one yourself?
    • A: "I'm going like I've got a contract here. I'm working and as I said last night there's no doubt that we can get this thing turned back around. I didn't turn into a bad coach overnight. I know this program better than anybody. I know what it takes. I know the type of people that you can get to come in. I know their strengths, I know their weaknesses and I'm fully committed to doing it. I'm going out and selling that."

Agreed on Ziemba.

Horrific year for him.

Watching him try to protect Burns was like seeing a one-legged kitty cat trying to bury a turd on a frozen pond.

An exercise in pure futility..

Listening to Tuberville is nausiating. Many of his comments contradict previous statements and others are simply incoherent thoughts. He says he doesn't want to train someone but what OC has he had to train? If anything, they need to train him in the intracacies of offensive football. He says the next OC will have to work with the staff but yesterday he said the new OC could bring in his own people. The fact that he is even going to have an opportunity to bring in a new OC is disheartnening for those of us who believe and have always believed (even after 04') that Tuberville is not the long-term answer for Auburn.

If Tubbs wants to run an Oklahoma style offense, he better get some athletes. Did you guys see how bbog and fast the TE or WR's were inthat game last night? BTW-I got hammered last night for stating someone ahd no heart for allowing the fumble to be taken away form him. Did yous ee Sam Bradfors run toward the goal line last night. Diving over the CB and getting hamered by a LB. That is heart and desire to do everything to win. We have no one or VERY few that will do that.

The Big 12 might play much defense (or do they and their offenses are just that good) but they are running the spread offense with 300lb linemen. Why get linemen down to 270lbs? HUGe mistake.

3:46 PM

I second that: listening to Tuberville is nausiating. It's ironic that Tuberville speaks of training when so many of his position coaches, notably OL and WR, field players that are so weak in fundamentals. Also, "Know this program"...? WTF does that mean? Al Borges seemed to know exactly how to play the Auburn brand of offense, he was just couldn't overcome the weak play by the other posistions.

I'm more convinced than ever that Tuberville just wants to walk with his $3 million.

Spot on Ron. Anybody notice how many times we were 3rd and 8ish and Burns threw a 2-3 yard pass. I remember one where we were 3 & 20 and he threw behind Lester, but if he caught it we would have gained 3 yards cause Hightower was all over him.

I wanted to put a rock through the TV when we do that. And we've done that for the last 3 years.

Did CTF not ask to bring in some of his assistants and Tubbs said no. That to me sounds like the OC had the asistants forced on him.

Jay,
Why do reporters not ever call Tuberville out on his contradictions and other comments that make absolutely no sense? Is it for fear of being labeled "disrespectful" or being denied access to information in the future? I have just never understood how Tuberville gets away with making some of his statements and nobody questions him which leads people to accept said statement as fact. For example, Tuberville says he's gotten the job done 8 out of 10 years. Is he kidding? Which 8? I would say he's gotten the job done 4 out of 10 years, and that's giving him either 02' or 05', you pick which year he got the job done. Moreover, Alabama has now had more coaches during the last 10 years than Auburn has,,,,,oh, and more 10 wins seasons too.

If you'll agree to ask Tuberville the following question, I'll provide you my personal email address and agree to pay you $1,000.00. Here's the question: Coach Tuberville, following the 06' season you said Auburn had was the third winningest program behind USC and Texas since 2004, coach, I just wanted to ask if Auburn still holds that position following the last two seasons and if you can tell me where USC and Texas rank in terms of wins since 2004. Thanks coach, you are truly a great trivia player.

Work with what other coaches? Lebo? Fortner? Pawalowski? Saban?

Or the firm of Nall, Ensminger, Gran, and Knox?

This just has the look of saying "let the new guy pick some people" and then the hire is made so late in the game that no changes are made.

I'm getting a little cranky and a lot snarky... SERENITY NOW.

Jet, just remember the creed.

I believe than my university exists to keep Tommy and his staff happy and employed.

I believe that questioning the staff is anti-Auburn.

I believe dysfunction celebrates diversity.

I believe offensive ineptitude is a sign of a peaceful person

I believe an overworked defense is a sign of of being responsible for not only your problems, but others, too.

I believe special teams should be an afterthought otherwise they wouldn't be called "special," which is a hateful label.

And because Auburn men and women believe in these things,
I believe in BBQ and love it.

I think you misunderstood my point in mentioning 02' and 05'. I said Tuberville has had 4 seasons that I consider "getting the job done". 2000, 2004 & 2006. My point was, I don't think either 02' or 05' were great seasons but I'll let you pick one of them to make 4 seasons in which Tuberville "got the job done". I was trying to help him get to 4,,,,that's hardly what I'd call rich.

What did you push him on and what was his response?

Will we hear rumors about CTT taking any other jobs like the Arky, A&M and potential LSU jobs last year? If not, why not?

If he did not become a bad coach overnight, how long did it take? Sorry, he put that one on a tee.

Seriously, on the first question, this is just like a free agent player holding out for the big contract after a nice run; but, sucking the next year.

4:21 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I believe Chris made the point in the other thread, and I tried as well.

If you look only to what is in the past, then I concede, yes, Tommy should get another year.

But our vision for success shouldn't be the view in our rearview mirror. We have to be forward thinking and forward looking.

We have to honestly appraise where we are and what it will take to get where we want to be and whether Tommy has the ability and the energy to get us there.

This is where I believe he falls woefully short. It's not as much about the history, but the direction.

I'm just not sure what direction AU should go (as if my opinion counted) but if the players do not believe Tubbs can take AU to the next level, then AU is destined for another repeat performance.

DO you think Tigers Unlimited will give us until january to decide if we want to renew our tickets. I would really like to see who he hires and who he lets go before I send them more money.

Wow, it's tough to support a guy who makes comments like "I thought we had a good gameplan".

Well if you thought so and it ended up 36-0 against your biggest rival, then maybe you should stop doing the thinking.

4:34 PM
Blogger wtc said...

The game plan was probably not too bad on paper. However, we allowed them to put us into their game plan. At 10-0 Ifelt good. Not that we would win but good it wasn't a blowout. then the turnovers started and we couldn't help ourselves.

Goes back to a post I made over a month ago. Tendencies are tough to change. When we made a turnover, it seemed the attitude was "here we go again" and it became self fulfilling. Almost identical as to what happened to UAT last year.

4:38 PM
Blogger ron mexico said...

we had two early losses, but we made adjustments to our line and played much better down the stretch... you are going to lose games, but i expect a team to get better as the season goes on... That to me is getting the job done

4:40 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Yeah, but those two early losses were at home vs teams we should have beaten. Yes, I know South Florida was a good team, but they weren't as good as we made them look, and beating us gave them confidence by putting them on the map.

We shouldn't have been in position to lose those two games. If some player moves were needed that's something the coaches should have spotted early on.

Add to that the disaster of the 2nd half vs UGA last year and the horrible special teams that pretty much cost us the LSU & South Florida games, I just can't see last year as a successful season despite the 9-4 record.

4:50 PM

I remember what happened last year... I thought the coaches did a pretty good job of coaching that year... our players didn't always play that well but we weren't poorly coached like this year.

I for one am not happy with anything short of winning 10 or more per year. When that happens, you will be on top more often than not. 9-4, why not a bad season for Ole miss, Gtech, Arky, should be a bad season. It is an expectation thing. I would rather expect to win them all each year and lose 1 or 2 than to be Ok with winning 9.

Blogger AU23WDE! said...

I don't understand how you some of you guys can just sit back and say that CTT is an idiot for saying, " I thought we had a good gameplan." How can you say it was a bad game plan? Do you actually know what the game plan was?? Maybe some of you should start coaching then... oh wait, AU probably wouldn't win a single game with you coaching. The game wasn't looking TOO bad until the 2nd half. A kicker who has never kicked before missed a FG before the half. Then we had 2 back to back fumbles recovered on our 35. Do you think CTT had that in the gameplan? No. Sometimes that stuff just happens and there isn't anything you can do about it. If some of you guys know so much about football, then quit your accounting and sales jobs and send in an application. I would seriously love to see some of you know it all "arm chair coaches" try and do what CTT does.

Thanks, Faker. Yeah that's what I was confused about. I don't think it is all the prevelent for coordinators to bring in all new staff, so maybe that it is.

I had the same thought FSJ. Franklin was the only one I know of that wanted to bring in someone and he was told no according to his interviews.

This was a bad year. We will throw everyone under the bus over this, but the bottom line is it can be fixed. We can move up, but only by raising our expectations and excepting nothing less will we get where we wanted to go.

Blogger Quitstina said...

Muburn, I agree. Sort of. I don't think the problem is the game plan or lack thereof. The problem is with fundamentals. We miss assignments. We run bad routes. Sloppy football was the order of the season.

5:09 PM
Blogger FSJ said...

Ron:

Cody looks like he is as big as Burns and Greenwood combined.

I wasn't at the game but have talked with some folks that were. They said that Cody jumped up and grabbed the crossbar during pregame warmups. Amazing that a guy his size can move like that.

5:12 PM
Blogger AU23WDE! said...

Your right. It was a sloppy season. But coaches can only do so much. A coach can't physically make a player do all of those things. All he can do is coach on it at practice. The coaches can't play the game. Have you attended practice any this year and witnessed coaches talking nothing about running routes, how to hold on to the ball, or how to make blocks? So do you really know what goes on between coaches and players during practices?

5:13 PM
Blogger wtc said...

From the LSU game on, every team had the same game plan. Put 8 in the box and make the QB beat you. Most of them accomplished their goal.

We never adjusted as Jay said in a report earlier inthe season. No one knew how to adjust this offense. Any good defense knew how to stop this offense. The staff and players were just put in a hole from the start of spring practice, if not before and we never could dig our way out.

5:14 PM
Blogger Aubie said...

Talked to several of the players' parents at the game. They were hoping this defeat would bring CTT's ouster. I was shocked to hear that. Again, a small sample, but if they felt that way, I think that says a lot.

5:15 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Muburn its all about the coaching - or lack thereof. This staff quit coaching this yr. Ex: Auburn had the ball at midfield against Ole Miss in the first half with about 50 seconds left and they didn't try to score. They could have used that at least as a learning opportunity for Kodi and the offense. That was inexcuseable.

Coaches should always take every opportunity to Teach. This staff seems incapable of doing that.

5:20 PM
Blogger Jay G. Tate said...

Kristina ... that's a typo.

I'll get it corrected now.

He meant that he hadn't been around coordinators who wanted to bring their own people...

5:23 PM
Blogger James in Auburn said...

Muburn,

We don't have to be at practice to know what goes on. We can see the result of practice time during every game. When you're team looks like they have no idea about what they are doing offensively, then it's fair to say that your practices are not very productive.

And while a coach can't physically do the job, he should have the ability to make personnel changes, so that someone with the ability to make the plays is in the game (e.g. not leave them on the bench because they can't pas block - that should have been covered during PRACTICE). The coaches should also have the ability to evaluate talent and physical ability so that you have the personnel needed. Apparently CTT has just figured that out, 10 years in - "We've got to recruit some guys that can make big plays. We don't have that."

And if the game plan included things like a 3 yard pass play on 3 and 8, then that plan was garbage going in.

Actually JRmax. Ole Miss scored a TD with 38 sec. left in the half and thats not even counting 7 seconds from a kickoff. 30 seconds left, there are many teams who are willing to try and create a 30 second drive from their own 20, while losing 10-0.

Coach Tuberville must be held accountable for a few things:

1. Hiring Franklin.

2. Losing football games.

3. Being blown out -- and shut out -- by the criminal tyde.

Now, as far as keeping him, I' mleaning to 1 more season but looking ahead is where it gets murkey. Does winning the SEC in 04 and getting left out of the NC game that year hold water today?

To me, his past must include two things that must be considered.

Hiring Franklin and losing to UGA -- getting blown out I should say -- with a BCS bowl game on the line.

Where do we want to be as Auburn fans? I tell you where I want to be:

In Atlanta in December - every year or at least a threat to be there in November --- not to must to axe.

5:28 PM

Ok so it was still plenty of time to get in scoring position. Kodi snaps the ball with two seconds left and throws a three yd pass.

5:30 PM
Blogger Quitstina said...

Muburn, I don't think I implied anywhere that I knew what went on during practices or that I could do a better job or anything like that. I commented on what I saw this season.

If your team cannot improve their fundamentals during an entire season, it goes back to the coaches. If the players are incapable of running what the coaches tell them to, then it still goes back to the coaches for not adjusting. Even if the players are picture perfect in practice and screw up only in games. It still goes back to the coach not being able to prepare them for the stage. If it is a talent problem...guess what? Still a matter of coaching.

CTT took blame for what happened. He knows it's coaching.

Tony franklin was a mistake, and that affected the season. Things are going to be better of next year. CTT will not make the same mistake twice. And if the unthinkable happens, and AU has a bad season again, then all of you will get your wish... CTT will be gone. Which do you want more? A good season? or a bad season and CTT is gone?

Playmakers? what do you call: Cadillac, Ronnie Brown, Jason Cambell, Carlos Rodgers, Kenny Irons, Stanley Mcglover, Quentin Groves? JUst because this season has failed to yield any CONSISTENT playmakers... does not mean they are not there.

I'm going to go ahead and say it... Mario Fannin and Cody Burns will be playmakers next season.

The prestigious list above, proves that CTT can get play makers. all those guys are in the NFL and are playmakers there!

I like CTT and I think he will be fine. But sometimes he is his own worst enemy, i.e. press conferences. It is clearly obvious that offense and offensive recruiting has been allowed to wither on the vine. That comes from poor management of the offensive side of the ball. Who is to blame, CTT is. I get the feeling that Borges, while the offensive coordinator, had no more power it seems now than all of the other position coaches. The same coaches that found Courtney Taylor, Aromoshodu, Ben Obomanu, and other good receivers quit being able to bring them to Auburn. Sometimes coaches get stale, it seems to be the case on the offensive side of the ball.

Now, in regards to Ziemba, it was admirable that he played hurt, but why did he have to, wasn't the second teamer even close to being able to play. The answer was no. We have zero play makers at wideout, the rbs while solid, only fannin it seemed was able to make game changing plays. Tate is a good back, but Burns erratic play meant we were behind the chains almost all the time. Not Tates forte.

I say go with a youth movement at QB. Burns is NOT the answer. I just really don't want to hear how he needs to be coached up. If that is case, then we seem to be recruiting qbs like Lebo is recruiting basketball players. Football players that come to a major program like Auburn should not need to have a major reworking of their fundementals like Burns obviously needs. He is exactly the same player he was when he got her. How he was a five star recruit only tells me how inaccurate those things are. Burns is not able to accomplish basic things and thus requires remedical work. Problem in recruiting coordination.

Already too wordy.

You've missed the subject point.

Its OFFENSIVE playmakers not in general.

But I'll say this, AU has recruited playmakers but this staff -- especially the WR coach -- has totally pissed away talent.

1. A. Mix was a 5 star 6'5" 200 lb wideout who redshitered and actually moved to TE before coming back to WR and making it in the NFL.

2. C. Slaughter came in as 5 star guy and the player of the year in Ga but hasn't reached his potential.

3. Prechea Rodriguez came in as ranked in the top 3 in WR in JuCo and floundered on the depth chart. He now is the most exciting player in Canada.

4. Tim Hawthorn was also the best WR in his state -- AL -- and hasn't hit his stride. Kid's got skills.

I'm sure I'm missing some but if a 18 year old kid comes to you with talent and doesn't get better. Doesn't reach his potential then its YOUR FAULT.

Hire someone to coach talent.

It is obvious that AU had play makers in 2004. The number of those types of players has been in STEADY DECLINE since 2004, which mirrors the STEADY DECLINE of AU's SEC record.

So I ask again Muburn, where are the play makers? Not just this year, but last year, or the year before that?

And BTW, it takes more than one or two of those to make a team great or even good. How many "play makers" did bammer have on the field yesterday? I would say 6 at a minimum, probably more.

Jay,

I take exception to your remark about the offense. It is so bad that it doesn't qualify as an offense. It is something of which that I am unfamiliar. It is such a mess that only a full and total tear down and rebuild will repair it. Just don't call it an offense unless you mean it runs out there when the other team's defense is on the field. CTT, unfortunately, has mis handled the offense so much this year that he has a worse problem ahead of him this spring.

No QB, no playmaker on offense, no special teams that can be counted on with the exception of Durst. Being a Todd supporter, I would have to say that both the Burns and the Todd side were dead wrong.

I didn't say anything about KI, not sure where you got that from. What I said was name some play makers from the past 3 years. You came up with 3 or 4 names. That's it? Three or four names over three years? Yeah that's gonna make one killer of a ball club there.

FSJ listed six to eight names, just on the bammer offense, that were play makers yesterday. I would even add JPW to that list, because he managed the game and didn't lose it or screw it up.

So bammer had more "play makers" on the field on offense yesterday than AU has had for two or three years? So AGAIN, exactly what is CTT getting paid to do?

My guess is Burns is not the QB next year. If we go forward with a 'spread' offense, Trotter is the new QB (I am only guessing) and Burns is a slot receiver or sits with Todd. He marginally got the job done in 2002, but the Fred Talley game takes it out of the running. Yes, we were 11-2 in 2006, but the Georgia whipping takes that year out of the running too.

Tuberville just has too many times the team is not prepared to play and we lose in embarrassing fashion for me to count those as good years. I don't mind losing a close, hard fought game, but to me games where the team doesn't show up are completely unacceptable.

The scholarship limitation would lead me to believe that we (in addition to every other top tier school) would be stacked with talent. But we haven't had a breakout player since '04 boys and our recruiting classes are less than spectacular year after year.

Also, can someone explain the logic in grabbing all of our recruits in this upcoming class so early. I don't follow recruiting as much as others and don't put a lot of stock into the star systems but why are we committing so many 1-2 stars so early? It just smells of laziness.

8:02 PM

The only year I really have a problem with under Tuberville is this year. Yes, we occasionally lost games we shouldn't have but we occasionally won games we shouldn't have too.

What I expect of an Auburn coach is to field a team that is prepared and has a chance to beat anyone we play. This year, that hasn't happened.

I feel like Tuberville will probably be back next season, although I wouldn't call it likely. That being said, if things are not significantly different next season, next season will be his last.

As for which coaches to fire, I find it truly ironic that people who have never seen a position coach coach would pretend to be able to evaluate a coaches performance. The actions of a head coach are much more visible than that of the position coaches. You have absolutely no clue what they have been told to do and not do, so you are not in a position to judge. Let someone who is in a position to know make those decisions.

It was a series of decisions that led to a one step forward, three steps back into a turd (operative term of the day).

1. Hiring Frankin -- in theory, good, as the WR position becomes the more important position than RB in the evolving college game. The spread is where it's going.

2. Not forcing staff to adapt to Franklin, or letting him bring someone with him.-- horrible.

3. Allowing Franklin to handpick a dead arm as a QB -- bad decision ... Kodi needed the work and development time.

4. Moving Bosley to tackle. Huh? Made no sense.

5. Moving Gabe to defense -- dumb from a strategic standpoint, but OK tactically in that at least we got him on the field.

6. Firing Franklin -- not sure what it got us except made the staff comfortable, which I'm not sure gained us anything. So we beat UT Martin. Big whoop.

7. Using Mario some of the time. Good when we used him. Bad when we didn't.

8. McKenzie back to offense. Only thing that could be done.

9. Game management -- uh, cost us a chance against Georgia and Arkansas.

10. Pick your own favorite.

Another Requirement for the New OC:

Be able to make ONE decent halftime adjustment.

The only successful adjustment Auburn made this year was putting Saliva back into the intro video in Week 4.

--

As for how I feel about yesterday, I had a WVU friend say she was so ticked about their loss to Pitt on Thursday that she had to go out and ride her bike for an hour to blow off steam.

I told her in response:

WVU losing to Pitt is like having someone kick your puppy: You get ticked about it, and you need to blow off some steam. But, soon enough, you get over it.

AU losing to Bama is like watching your puppy die in your arms and being forced to wait at least another year before getting a new puppy.

Losing 36-0 to 12-0 Bama is like having Nick Saban personally shoot your puppy and then blow the pistol smoke in your face like Tubby's cheap cigar.

Speaking of, after getting down 3-0, was our primary defensive adjustment yesterday:

1. Stunt Josh Bynes into a particular hole every running down.

2. If we guess right, we get a 1 yd loss (if we can tackle).

3. If we guess wrong, there's no LB to stop a 3-4 yd run turning into a 10-20 yd run?

I assume the D coaches felt they had to make something happen or no one would.

I'm not so sure Rhodes is the answer on the defensive side of the ball either. He beat up on some lower level competition, however we struggled stopping people all year long.

Execution and decisions matter.

1. Durst shanks the rugby punt ... an execution issue. It gives Alabama the ball at is 35 when we're punting from our 45 ... that's bad.

2. Alabama quickly picks up a first down, then faces a 3rd and 11 ... Jerraud Powers plays Julio softer that a squishy toy. 15 yards first down. Coffee scores next play ... and game.

At least Hart and Dunlap played.

Jet,

Let's not forget Powers dropping an almost sure fire pick six then to still get the ball back and have Lester be so afraid of taking a hit that the ball falls out and sets them up for their 1st score of the 2nd half.

For the Tubs apologists that claim that this was just one bad year.

His SEC record in last 21 games: 10-11

By contrast, a coach that had 2 SEC championships, 5 division titles (including last year), and 1 MNC was forced out. Phil Fulmer's record in his last 21 SEC games: 12-9.

Why does AU accept less than UT? I sure as hell don't.

I haven't ... I just restricted my comments to when I thought the game was still in play ... I thought it was over at the half ... just like I thought it was over at the half in T-town in 2004 and we were down 6-0. I knew we were going to win and they did, too.

Every day that passes I am more impressed with Johnson ... read the book "A Civil War" by John Feinstein. It's about the Army-Navy series. Johnson was the OC at Navy at the time before he went to Georgia Southern as head coach, before coming back to Navy as coach. You can tell he's a hard-nosed football guy.

And I think the offense, with tweaks, can work. I'm willing to give it a run.

GT had more than 400 yards rushing against 2 SEC teams this year. That is pretty impressive. Hell, we can't even get 300 total yards.

Johnson won't leave GT. While he wanted to prove his system works in the BCS, he felt bad leaving Navy. But they were in good hands with their next coach.

Not much I can add to what's already been said. I've been a Tub's apologist all year, mainly because I've felt that firing him would do us more harm than letting him try to straighten things out. After reading that interview, I don't know.

Finding somebody that is an experienced and established coach to come in and take on Saban now will not be easy. The "decade long" disaster that Mr. Sensible mentioned weeks ago is quite possible if Tubs is fired now; also quite possible if he stays.

This season was obviously doomed as soon as Franklin was fired. He must have gotten pretty outrageous that week for Tubs to fire him in the manner in which it happened. If he had stayed, we'd probably won a couple more games.

So many ifs to this season - if Pierre-Louis hadn't gotten hurt, the season might have been different. If Todd's arm had returned to normal, we might have had a very decent team. I thought Todd looked like he could run the offense well, he just didn't have an arm left.

I've no idea what happens, but I'll say that I don't think Kodi is ever going to make it as a QB in the SEC. Franklin could see that, and that's the reason he wouldn't play him. Maybe I'm wrong about Kodi; I hope I'm wrong.

If Borges had never been fired, we'd probably finished 9-3 or so this year. Certainly not any better, maybe a little worse. I think Tubs could see that and wanted something better; thought Franklin could get us to the next level. Bad decision.

So I'll support the administration in whatever they decide. I'm just not very optimistic about our short term future no matter what they do.

All AU fans - I just read the following Tuberville comment on the AJC:
"This time we're going to get somebody that understands this program. You have to understand your situation and what kind of offense you can run with the type of players you can get. We've got a pretty good handle on that."
Say WHAT?? I think it's Tuberville that needs to understand the program! He brought in the spread offense and didn't have the players for ANY offense! He didn't allow Franklin to bring in his own coaches, and the BBQ boys (Tubs lifelong assistants that are not good enough to be OC) undercut the new guy!
As to his comment that he thought the game plan was a good one, and MUBURN23 challenging the arm chair coaches.... I think Tubs was planning to score, wouldn't you think? The comment about a new kicker missing a FG... he allowed the young kicker to be on the field! No he didn't plan for turnovers, but what about the other 8-9 drives that resulted in a TOTAL of 170 yards of offense?? Recruiting is lacking, and it will show again next year!

I really think we have all failed to list the signature play of the game. When our linebacker bounces off their QB, I knew that things were bad. If that had been Blackman hitting JPW, they would have still been picking up pieces of JPW. If you want one play that pretty much summed up the game, that was the one I would choose.

Auburn vs. Alabama Review –

Well I figured the game was going to go one of two ways. Either we would keep it close or it was going to be a blowout. As you know by now the latter came true. I don’t think hardly any Auburn fans thought we had a chance to win, but many of us didn’t think the outcome would have been that one sided. Here is a review of the game and its elements.

1. Fans – I had to add this section. My mother went to her first iron bowl this year, in Tuscaloosa. She stated she wore her Auburn colors proud. She was shocked to find that she was given the bird several times and verbally harassed and threatened all day long by all types of Bama fans. Not by one or two choice fans but by several all day long where ever she went. The sad thing was no other bama fans stepped in to say otherwise. As an Auburn season ticket holder I try to accommodate opposing fans who are visiting. I will discuss the game with them, offer directions and even offer a cold beverage. It’s funny how Bama fans complain about how LSU fans treat them and then turn around and act the same way. Bama fans are the biggest kool aid drinkers around and they are by far the most obnoxious. No I am not talking about the lawyers, doctors and dentist crowd or the merlot drinkers. I am talking about the sleeve less; hounds tooth ball cap wearing, mullets that make up 80% of the fan base. I only say this to prove a point. Anytime you do something like that you have to think, would you want someone to act that way towards your mother. These are the type of fans that most opposing fans view as bama fans. As I have said before those types of fans are the kool aid drinkers. I just wish they would drink some Jonestown Kool aid with Jim Jones sometime. The world would be a better place.

2. Offense- Kodi Burns looked extremely off. Any progress we had seen went out the door. He looked lost. What was that play were he held onto the ball for like 40 minutes as the bama player sacked him for a loss. He missed wide receivers all day long. I was almost distraught enough to yell “Put in Chris Todd” then I remembered the first half of the season. The one thing Kodi does well is run the ball. We ran him on two series and never did it again. I was dumbfounded. The running backs were even worse; Ben Tate a north south runner ran east and west, again. Does Auburn’s coordinator lack a compass or is it short term memory loss. Then Fannin fumbled, Lester fumbled, Burns fumbled it seemed everyone fumbled.

The wide receivers were non-existent as well, who are we kidding they were down right terrible, as they have been all year long. Quick, name Auburn’s leading receiver…..yea…me neither. Our offense line didn’t play much better. Kodi was running for his life all day. I will say Senior Tyrone Green gave Bama’s Nose Guard Cody all he wanted. You did not hear Cody’s name much yesterday on defense. I think they used a new technique that involved laying Snickers Bars at the line of scrimmage to distract him. By the way did anybody see one trick play? I didn’t think so. Don’t you think at 5-7 against your rival who was #1 you would want to use everything you could. It seemed as if Auburn was operating off of a playbook that was missing 56 pages.

3. Defense – Ok before I get started I know that the offense put out defense in a bad position time and time again. However, we did not play good at all on defense. Tell me can you recall us ever getting pressure on their qb or how many tackles did we miss. The key to winning the last few iron bowls and beating bama has been getting to Sara Jessica Parker, which we did not do. Our all-SEC linemen were very quite and out of position all day. Our midget linebackers were oversized as Bama ran it right up the middle. Mike McNeil, I haven’t seen such a bad example of safety since the Exxon Valdez incident. He let everything get by him, whether it was by air or by land. Yes, our defense was down right terrible. We needed linebacker Tray Blackmon yesterday. He is one of the best in the SEC against the run. But he was too busy working the double shift at the Waffle House having to support his nine kids. The second half we didn’t stop Bama at all. Their punter changed back into his street clothes.

4. Special Teams – Well of course our regular kicker Wes Byrum did not play. In way it was a relief. However, the weight of the kicking tasks was put on a walk on kicker, Morgan Hull, who had never kicked in a real game before. Does that sound like a recipe for disaster or an after school special? Well it was a little of both. With the first half winding down, the tigers down by ten, Hull kicked what most thought was a momentum changing 40 yd field goal through the uprights. However, El Satan called a timeout to ice the kicker. Hull had to rekick it. Hull was like the guy who thinks his name was called to come down on the Price is Right only to find out he misheard the announcer. So he lined up again to make his mark on the rivalry, only to kick a line drive that would have decapitated a midget. It was blocked and the momentum of the game shifted back to Bama. He never saw the field again for a field goal attempt. Clinton Durst, our own little Rudy of a punter was by far the player of the game. You know it’s been a bad year and season when your punter is the highlight. He kept us in the game with his punts all day long. He helped our field position. You know it’s bad when the Auburn player of the game looks like the guy bagging your groceries. Hell, last year he probably was bagging your groceries.

All in all we should have known it was going to be a bad season. Now we don’t have to hold up seven fingers anymore. We can go back to the one finger that all bama fans deserve. I salute Bama and their coach and team. They have had a good season. They have a lot of reasons to be excited. So much so I created a list for them.

TOP TEN THINGS BAMA FANS HAVE NOT BEEN THIS EXCITED OVER:

1. Bama fans have not been this excited since Spam was half off at Piggly Wiggly.
2. Bama fans have not been this excited since Elvis was sighted working concessions at Bryant Denny stadium.
3. Bama fans have not been this excited since hounds tooth caskets became available.
4. Bama fans have not been this excited since they learned Kenny Stabler was driving their children’s school bus.
5. Bama fans have not been this excited since the no shirt and no shoes policy was dropped at Captain D’s.
6. Bama fans have not been this excited since former Coach Mike Price tried to cash his buyout check at Sammy’s strip club.
7. Bama fans have not been this excited since Skoal dip cans came in his and hers.
8. Bama fans have not been this excited since they had their Bear Bryant coke bottles appraised on Antique Road Show.
9. Bama fans have not been this excited since Joe Namath kissed their wife.
10. Bama fans have not been this excited since they learned every time a hurricane hits they get a new trailer (FEMA).

Cheer up Auburn fans there is always recruiting and women’s basketball. Look at it this way at least Auburn items will be on discount for Christmas time.

I can't pinpoint any ineptness about an assistant, but:

1. Some (Knox comes to mind) doesn't get much from the talent he is given.

2. The players he has have no talent.

3. A combo of both and that takes it to another level.

9:43 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Steve from Columbia - CTT's assistants have been with him since his Ole Miss days..... through countless OC's and DC's. Do you think they knew how to coach the spread offense when Franklin was hired? Think about it - different offenses require different coaching. You don't teach a guy to pass block, check routes, etc., the same way for all offenses.

9:43 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Anonymous, that is very true, but I don't see where it has anything to do with what has gone in Auburn, at least in terms of the position coaches. It appears to be a failure of the OC to train the position coaches or the failure of the position coaches to grasp or accept the concepts. There really isn't a good way to know. I do wonder about Knox because our receiving has always seemed to be an issue. I am very unsure about the other coaches, although Gran and Nall are proven commodities. A lot will depend upon the philosophy we run next season, so to just say get rid of coaches makes little since. Let the OC that comes in decide that. He should know better than any of us. If not, he shouldn't be hired.

Earlier I asked about the size of our players. Could any of AU's player jum in the starting lineup at OK?

Is every receiver inthe Big 12 6'4" 215lbs. with vice grips for hands? I don't think I have ever seen a league with that many talented receivers. Are these the type of players that won't come to AU, as Tubbs puts it?

9:51 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

wtc, I see a lot of talent at the receiver position. That is why I question the coaching there. Guys like Zachary, Hawthorne, and Slaughter are supposedly very talented. It is performance that concerns me. When it is one or two players underperforming, it could be the fault of the players. When I see year in and year out players consistently under perform at wide receiver, it seems like the cause has to be the position coach, although the OC shares the responsibility.

9:53 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Steve,
Exactly - the OC decides who coaches the offense. Franklin was not allowed to do this. If they couldn't grasp the new scheme, or didn't want to, they most likely undercut the OC (Franklin).
Again, don't lose sight that none of these guys (CTT's lifelong asst's) have ever been promoted to OC......

Agreed on the WR's. Under performed since the two that went to the league a few years back (Ben and whats his name).

I hope the new OC tells the QB to NEVER throw another pass for 2 yards when it is 3rd and 8. I wanted to come out the stands all season long when that happened.

The hardest stat to live with this year aside from the 5-7 record and 36-0 vs Alabama is 10 offensive TD's in 8 SEC games.

Horrible.

Speaking of horrible. You just lay a 36-0 egg in your rivalry game and you have to face the media the next day, it would probably be a good idea to sit down and think out every possible response so that you don't come across as even more clueless than the 36-0 showed the day before.

I like Tommy. I've met him, I believe him to be a good guy. However I just don't believe him anymore when he talks about football because nothing he says ever adds up anymore.

He's got more spin moves than Barry Sanders, except it's not the 75 yard TD run Barry that saved his stats every game it's the 5-10 yard loss where he just kept spinning into traffic.

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

For the last 3 years it seems on 3rd an anything longer than 4 we were throwing the ball in front of the 1st down marker.

Yesterday it was just a lot worse because every pass was a 4 yard crossing pattern.

10:01 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

RK-My point exactly. None of the top teams throw it like that. Florida comes close but they have Harvin going over the middle not T Trott.(over rated)

Gabe McKenzie should stay on offense. Look how OK runs that big TE Gresham (I think) all over the place. 6'5" 250. What a target. But somebody has to block to give the QB time to throw. Still say KB not the starter next year. Never will be. Not gonna happen.

Hoopie,

Just some venting going on. I really believe that if Borges was the OC, we beat Ark, we beat Ol Miss, we Beat Vandy, and we beat LSU because Borges would have run clock. Caudle might have had a better chance to play. We would have kept it closer against WVA and may have beat them (look at the Pittsburgh game) and we would have been better at BD. Against Georgia, we would have had a better chance as well.

This was a good year wasted. I see nothing good that has come of it. Absolutely nothing. The only thing positive I see is that people no longer think Burns is being mistreated.

10:31 PM
Blogger landon said...

Hoopie: That happens when you go 5-7 and lose 36-0 to Bama. There's not a lot of un-nasty things to say.

That said, I will counter PDWT mom's experience with mine from yesterday.

Wearing my orange and strapped with an AU shaker yesterday, I saw both Tide and Tiger Walks (AU arrived late), sat through the whole game, stayed in the stadium 10-15 minutes afterwards looking for old HS friends, and ate dinner on the Strip.

Not once did I get yelled at. I never got the finger. Only one person (channeling his best JPW) taunted me by asking me to look at the scoreboard. And he shut up after I told him, straight faced, "yeah, I watched the game too."

All in all, the Bama fans I was around all day seemed to care more about not losing their undefeated season and ending the streak -- not holding up fingers or taunting AU fans.

Which is kind of scary. I fear they are drinking all of Saban's kool-aid, even the flavors that are healthy. (i.e., it's about more than beating your arch rival, it's about winning championships)

Hoopie: No one listens to Jim Rome, so stop with the analogies to his crappie show.

Secondly, Tuberville blew this season when he went job hunting last year.

Thirdly, he has competed and beaten Saban 4 times. You would think he understood what it takes to do it again.

Fourth, as he said, he has not become a bad coach overnight. No Tommy, it has taken 10 years.

10:38 PM
Blogger Denny Crum said...

I don't think there would be as much teeth gnashing if we had lost 22-13 or 22-16, you get the picture. But yesterday was an implosion like we have not seen all year, even at WVA.

Look, spring ball is not far off. Lets get an OC and the coaches he wants, get our conditioning for power football set, everybody realize that Burns is not even close to being at the level Campbell was in his development and will never be the answer, and then get behind the team, who ever the Head Coach is.

Auburn is bigger than any Coach. That coach, who if he is successful next year (at least 8 wins including bammer), better quit these coy games at the end of seasons where everyone wonders if he is going to be the next head coach at __________ you name the school.

Out for the night. Unless I think of someething witty to say later.

Personally, I think it is not honorable to let your agent leak your name out as a possible contender for jobs just to try to win concession by management. can't prove he did that, but he sure didn't do alot to quash those rumors. i guess I am still upset about that from last year. Also, for a good head coach, which I believe he is, he sure made a series of bone headed personnel moves to make things worse this year. Hell Coke came out with New Coke, and they have done well since then.

Last, since coaches make obscene amounts of money, alot of good will that used to be extended by many is lost.

CTT should be back, I believe that he should be given a chance to fix things this year. I think he will.

I'm out for sure now.
