Tuberville speaks, 11/24

We are live blogging Tommy Tuberville's weekly press conference.
  • Here we go ...

  • "Happy Thanksgiving, everybody."

  • "We've had good practices. Everything has gone well. By the time we get to the end of the week, we should be in good shape. The players -- they're into it. We'll probably be a huge underdog. We have a lot of work to do just to get into this game."

  • "Their offensive coordinator has done an outstanding job of taking what they had and molding it."

  • "They don't live off the pass; they live off the run. They look like what we've looked like in the past."

  • "Defensively? Speed. They have played very good team football all year long. Just watching them on film, you can tell they have a lot of confidence."

  • "They're a complete football team."

  • "It's a rival game like no other. Obviously, there is a lot riding on this game for Alabama with them being No. 1. We've been there. We understand that."

(EDITOR'S NOTE: When was Tuberville No. 1?)

  • On the BCS: "Somebody is going to be left out. Different people complain every year. When they get their foot in the door, they get very involved."

  • On Terrence Cody: "We thought about dressing out Coach Dunn and putting him out there (for practice purposes). You just challenge your center and two guards and play the game. Everybody has big guys in the middle. It's just unusual that you have a big guy who is this talent. He's a big reason they're sitting where they're sitting in the polls."

  • Motivations: "We haven't talked about the streak. We haven't talked about a bowl. We're talking about playing for those seniors. The one thing we talk about all week long is poise. They'll go back when they're 50 or 60 years old and tell their kids and grandkids about the week of the Iron Bowl."

  • Six is good?: "It's satisfying, obviously. This is one game you've got to win. You want to give your fans the opportunity to have that ability to walk into a restaurant, walk into Wal-Mart or their places of business, and brag about the game. It's not the end of the world win or lose. Fans enjoy it a lot more than the players and coaches."

  • Value of this game: "When you get to the last game of the year, you forget about what has happened. I'm seeing a lot of smiles on their faces. It's nice to see them relax a little bit. I want them to relax and enjoy this week no matter what has happened. For us, this year, it's pride. The only thing we can control is this game."

  • On Wes Byrum: "Sometimes you come back with some confidence. When you lose it, it's hard to get it back. Wesley has done very well for us in the past. It hasn't been a great year for him -- as it has for everybody. Me included, quarterbacks."

  • "Every season is a 13-game playoff."

  • "They've had their bad moments, but they've been able to overcome them."

  • On John Parker Wilson: "He has more confidence in everyone around him. The running game has helped, but it all starts with those five offensive linemen."

You have a good feeling because Auburn will win, Taylor. No doubt about it, baby!

Jay, we were obviously not number 1 in 2004, but we were in the conversation and had a lot riding on the Iron Bowl that year, so I would say that that is what Tubs was getting at with his comment about 'we've been there'.

Has Auburn ever had a bad practice?

I understand what Tuberville is saying when he said we've been there. Even though we weren't 1 in 2004, we were 11-0. Pretty similar circumstances going into that game.

Can't you just see Tommy in his ROTC uniform facing the oncoming throng, screaming "Remain calm. We've had good practices! WE'VE HAD GOOD PRACTICES!"?

"Their offensive coordinator has done an outstanding job of taking what they had and molding it."

Very interesting comment because I think Franklin was very successful in molding our offense too, it is just what he molded it into that I object with.

As for mount Cody, I see us trying to find a way to take advantage of his size. Athletic ability or not, something that big doesn't change directions easily.

By the way, don't forget Tuberville was on NC teams at Miami.

Wow- playing with confidence, good plan on offense, strong on the line of scrimmage, playing together as a group these are novel concepts for an AU fan. Maybe with a new coaching staff we could have some of these things next year on our team.

depressedAUfan, it is very apparent that we will not have a new coaching staff next season.

Powers considering the NFL, but Marks is not from what I just read on al.com. Very interesting. I thought Marks would be the player head to the NFL. Powers has been injured quite a bit.

Powers and Marks have both been pretty banged up this season if memory serves.

Steve, I am trying to prepare myself for this inevitable fact, but it is hard to accept. Honestly, do any of you see hope for improvment next season? Jay went from 75% on Tubs being fired down to 25% and falling. And the team looks no better now for the most part than it did at the beginning of the season(and I would argue some parts have regressed). I have to assume TPTB see things that casual fans don't. I like CTT, but I don't see a turnaround we need with him at the helm. If he is retained I hope to be proven wrong and I will gladly admit to being wrong.

Don't worry about it Jay, I don't read those guys, so I either hear it first from you or from a HOTTIE on here!

Depressed I am with you. Tubbs usually can pull one out of the hat throughout the year, but this year I think his hat is empty. The future, sad to say, does not look any brighter. I believe we will regain our rightful spot at 8-4, 9-3.

4:50 PM
Blogger barkley for governor said...

8-4 or 9-3? As sad as it is, that will please most fans.

I was talking to a friend the other day who was making a case for Tuberville. He said that it's pathetic for some people to want to fire a guy who had one bad year.

I guess he's been in a coma since 1999.

Yeah KJ, I mean the SEC as a whole was down this year other than Bama and UF. ALL of the other teams were beatable and we don't even have a winning conference record. My point is AU probably won't be THIS bad every year, but I would suggest the other programs are also more likely to improve . One more thing- Jay has said that AC hates losing and is thinking seriously about turning pro. If he saw a big turnaround for next season would he be more likely to return? And now Powers is talking about turning pro also? What if we lose AC, Marks and Powers? Unlikely, but that would be a bad sign to me.

Woodberry can't hold your jock Jay, video or no video. How in the hell can a freakin bama grad "subjectively" cover Auburn?
