That's a wrap from Oxford

I'm not going to drop the BANHAMMER on anyone.

Ron eased back. So has Chris. No problems.

I'm now leaving the press box here in Oxford, Miss., with plans to make it back to Montgomery no later than 10.

I don't think I can make a campfire work tonight. I started today in Tupelo at 8 a.m. I'm too old for all-nighters.

So peace and love to all.

(I will be checking back with the blog, though, so I'll work through any questions you have once I return.)

On an earlier blog, someone mentioned how easy it is getting to get over the loss. I must admit I am over it. In fact, I fully expected it. My last post on the previuos blog was that this team seems to be expecting the worse to happen and therefore it does. As a fan, I am also expecting the worse.

I will say doing yardwork and listening to the game at least allows me to accomplish something productive.

Lots of streaks seem to be ending this year - my streak of AU winning every time I have to miss a game came to an end. Got to see the first half and thought we still had a decent chance to win. Was able to get back and watch the 2nd half without hearing anything about how the game came out, so it was just like watching it live and I could skip the commercials. Thought we had a good chance after the td, but the interceptions just killed us.

But reading the blog, I'm not nearly as negative as many of you. I saw a team and coaches doing their very best to win the game, even though all the goals for the season are long gone.

The number of injuries is unreal. We're playing guys that aren't ready to play because we have to. Guess it could ultimately be blamed on poor recruiting, but some times the ball just doesn't bounce our way.

I'm gonna stay positive and support the Tigers no matter what.

Mr. S - Gonna sit back now and watch Texas Tech make bammer #1. They won't stay there.

I really don't think Tubs should get the boot. He took the biggest gamble of his career with Franklin, and it just didn't work. In hindsight, if he had stuck with Gorgeous Al, we're 6-2 at worst, and possibly even 8-0.

The defense is more than serviceable in its current state - no need to throw that baby out with the bath water.

On O, there are two assistants who should get a strong recommendation to the new incoming OC - Gran and Nall. Knox has ten years in, and should be able to take a role as high school liason, or a Joe Whitt type of job, or somesuch. Ensminger is more of a QB coach by background I believe - I don't see how that fits with a new OC.

One thing to think about as I watch TT's chemistry between Harrell and his receivers: Back in the summer, with Todd and Burns as co-#1's, who was organizing the QB-WR pitch-n-catch sessions? I'm thinking maybe they just didn't do any of that - sure looks like it, with WR's cutting-off patterns, no-touch overthrows, etc.

mdaniel, Kodi had his shots. He wasn't as good as this earlier in the season. That was the entire purpose of playing Todd. Todd had a few outstanding games at the beginning of the season. He did his part. Now it is time for Kodi to step up.

When you look at the support Kodi had today, I thought he was excellent. An inexperienced quarterback going against a defense that whipped Florida who beat the ever loving snot our of Georgia and keeping us in the game was great. I can't knock Kodi for the interceptions. I know one or two were purely his fault, but when you throw that many balls, it can happen. He needs more playmakers. Chris Slaughter stepped it up today.

War Eagle All. I haven't been able to post much lately, but I've been trying to keep up.

I am watching the Texas Tech game tonight and you can't help but imagine what Mike Leach could do at a school where he can really recruit talent. He has done an amazing job at Texas Tech. Texas Tech was pretty much nothing before he got the gig, and look at what they have done now. He actually has a defenese to go along with his offense. That is scary.

As for Auburn, did we really expect anything different? I was optomistic and actually thought we would win this game, but it didn't happen. I know things are bad in Auburn land when it doesn't bother me because we lost. It is like that is what is expected. It has been a long, long time since I have felt this way. The sad reality is that there is a good chance we could wake up tomorrow morning with Alabama being ranked the #1 team in the nation. They have achieved in 2 season's what Auburn hasn't achieved in a long time, and that is being ranked numnber 1.

I haven't completely caught up with all the posts yet, but I know earlier in the week that Jay said this game shouldn't impact whether Tubs stays or goes. I feel like it does and will. The reality is that we will be 5-7 this year. That is a terrbile years. The Franklin hire was a gamble that didn't pay off. I know most believe that he shouldn't be penalized, but last time I checked, when you gamble in vegas and lose your house they don't give you a do over with house chips. I'm just so mixed on where I stand right now. I have been firmly behind him in the past, but I'm finding myself starting to lean the other way now. I just don't think that this team should look as bad as it has this year. It looks like the offense doesn't even have a game plan. They must wing it in practice and continue it to the game.

That's it for now. I'm sure there will be some good banter back and forth from this.

8:56 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Mr S., also notice that Harrell doesn't run the ball. I have heard people repeatedly tell me how you have to have a running QB to run the spread. That just isn't the case.

8:57 PM

Oh yeah, "WOOO HOOO! So what if they have 326 yards of offense in the first half! So what if they are running all over us! YOU AIN'T HURT!" - Will Muschamp in the Texas locker room.

I believe that Auburn Offense only has a handful of plays and I believe is that way because Kodi cannot handle anymore. I think we have really messed up Kodi's with all the different things we have and have not asked him to do over his two years at Auburn. Ne needs a real QB coach that can get help him with footwork and throwing mechanics. He also is still locking on to receivers too long before throwing the ball. He did make a couple of good check downs, but overall running this vanilla offense is not going to yeild much offense. It is going to be adequate in spurts but never be consistent.

9:05 PM

It seems to me Kodi shouldn't look so lost when it comes to the fundamentals and be so easily twitterpated. I think he's doing about what he can with his 1) talent 2)coaching 3)game time 4) amount of crapola the team has been through.

Jason Campbell, even at his worst, has more tools as a QB than Kodi Burns has shown so far.

Kodi may break out of the funk next year, but I don't think he'll ever be Jason Campbell.

9:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

emmett, that is an excellent analogy. I am afraid we made similar mistakes with Kodi as we made with Jason Campbell. We played Jason too earlier in his Auburn carrier when he wasn't ready and it took a while for him to recover. Dwight Freeney did a job on Jason early on.

9:12 PM

This might sound odd, but our Offense with Kodi makes me think back to the Gabe Gross Exp.

It was Bare Bones Offense(like 95lb Cooper at HB) , and Ben Leard could not handle it, so we just asked Gross to make a play...any way he could

In the same way thats what they are doing with Kodi...all hades has broken loose and they figure he can run out of the muck

I agree with the post that Kodi will be a good qb with a better qb coach. Also does Lee Ziemba now have a solid lock on the record for most consecutive games with an illegal motion penalty?

Here is the 1998 vs 2008 offense comparison:

1998- 270.2 yds/game, 15.1 Points / game

2008- 288.5 yds/game, 18.9 points per game

Well, I guess this years offense is a little better, but not by much.

Who was our OC in 98, I know Jimbo was the QB coach

Emmett- The great A-Hole Rodney Allison was our offensive mastermind that year, but Jimbo and Terry Bowden called the plays until Terry left, and then Jimbo was really the OC.

At least God has a since of humor. I live in Georgia and I loved seeing UF demolish those bulldawgs. They have been worried all year about how they were going to get screwed out of the national championship, even after bama beat them, and now it looks as if the Capital One bowl is the best they can shoot for. At least it gives me a reason to smile.

eddie, couldn't agree more. UGA fans are like Alabama fans without the MNCs. That makes it more annoying to me. I love they lost by such a large margin. Having said that, they'll name the score with us.

That game is always close! Even as bad as we are. I have to believe we can at least hang tough.

9:44 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

mdaniel- I believe UF is playing as good as anybody is right now. There defense looks like it is back to 2006 form. Charlie Strong is the most under-rated DC in the league. I think he does a great job and I do not understand how he has not had a chance to become a HC yet.

Nobama- probably need to change your name to keep the politics from this lively and friendly board.

VRGA- Yeah, they can probably name their score on us, but if they don't blow us out, I will get satisifaction in that. This is a no win game for them. They are supposed to beat us and if they blew us out, would we be surprised? It will be tough for them to get joy out of beating us if you ask me.

Florida is great, but Penn State is the team these days. I have decided to turn traitor and become a Penn State fan. I was going to be a Longhorn fan, but somehow I changed my mind tonight.

By the way, I think a head coach may become available from a major college in the state of Tennessee. He has many years of experience in the SEC and has won a MNC.

Notice how Tech lines up in twopoint stance and can still block and hold out the DL rushers. When a team has to respect the run and the pass you can do sooooo much more.

I saw where Ole Miss ran no safety in the 1st half on several plays. They dared AU to pass deep.

Troy may hire back Tony Franklin for 1 game just to beat us

9:52 PM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

mdaniel, let me help you. Is it the fact that he has become a classless HC these days. What happened at the UF game last year and what I saw during our game last year convinced me of that. But at least he is a disciplinarian. I mean, how many coaches get 7-9 guys arrested in one year and get maybe a game if anything at all.

9:53 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Monica, were you planning on buying them anyways?

9:53 PM
Blogger Emmett said...

this loss really does put them #2 in the sunbelt, which is perfect for that bowl...and with the trouble they have selling tickets...Auburn would be tempting

9:54 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

How about the toss to the Ole Miss back and looked like he would throw and then ran it. AU was totally faked out. I think other teams have run at least one trick play on us and it work. AU has run a couple but I do not remember any working. The last one was the rally killer at WVU after the on side kick.

Just not our year.

9:54 PM

Eddie, now UGA fans are talking about some of the "classless" things UF did in the game today. Oh the irony.

Muschamp's defense keeps giving up the yards and will most likely give up 30+ points - again. As Phred showed earlier, the season stats against his D are ugly.

Scottie- I have officially retired my orange and blue glasses for the year. In matter of fact, I have smashed them, spread out the remains around all the continents of the world and have destroyed all evidence to their whereabouts.

We will not be going to a bowl game this year, nor do we deserve to go to one.

Emmett- I believe that this blog has probably gotten bigger due to the bad season, but I have been a closet reader for over a year before I posted. I think this blog would do well even if Auburn was doing good. People like me who are members of some site like Rivals gets tired of not being able to have a decent conversation without getting critized or in the case of this season, tired of all the bashing by the same 8 posters.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

I like fake Kristina better.

Blogger Kris said...

Is it just me or does anyone else like seeing Muschamp's defense get taken to the woodshed? Not that I want it to be easier for bama to get to the title game, but I for one am sick and tired of Texas picking off our defensive coordinators.
