Derek Dooley speaks
Hey everyone. Sorry for the delay. I had daddy duty for a bit.
Everyone's favorite Louisiana Tech football coach has amended his earlier statement -- the one that was a week old -- and now acknowledges meeting with Jay Jacobs. Both men were in New York City today for the College Football Hall of Fame festivities.
Here is Dooley's statement:

Here is Dooley's statement:
“Obviously, representatives from Auburn spoke with many people around the annual National Football Foundation event. I was one of the many but any further comment on this matter would be inappropriate at this time.”

If you're not first, you're last!
smoke...
I'm last
Well let me just quote the late-great Colonel Sanders, who said: "I'm too drunk to taste this chicken."
I was high when i said that.
Smoke...
Are they gonna interview Bobby Wallace too?
jay get in the yeuglings early tonight while on daddy duty?

JJ said money won't be a constraint but it seems to me like it might be holding them back from Jimbo..anyone share that opinion?
speaking of i am gonna leave this hotel and try to find some grub around daphne. ill be back and holla lato
kfc is delicious, although i prefer popeye's
now I'm craving KFC. Thanks a lot, Derek Dooley.
well money and an extra 5 mil...that seems a little steep. I think he was referring to salary but hey I've been wrong before.
psh like lowder can't write a whopping check
Well his bank just got governemnt assistance. while I'm not saying he's hurting for money, but dang 5 mil cash is a huge amount, especially in this economy.
Hmmm, Derek Dooley. I kind of like the name. It is like one of those superman names, Louis Lane or Clark Kent.
And Louisiana Tech ain't so bad. I do believe they had a two year win streak against Bama when Bama had their greatest coach of all time, Mike Dubose.
If I'm Lowder, I'm more careful about the whopping checks I'm writing, whether I'm able to or not.
My guess is Lowder and the rest of the board will steer clear of this.
Man all this smoke...I'm ready to see some fire!
Well if the internet insiders are right, in 3 or 4 days Coach Boom will be introduced.
Tar -
He is actually Greg's nephew. Greg (my hubby) is the old one. I'm young.
My old husband just explained nephew is working on his PhD in accounting at Florida and is teaching classes.
AU Undercover's "report" that Gill's fallen down the priority list is due to a lack of connections and experience in the SEC is absurd. Who would be so idiotic to walk away from a strong candidate for some lilly soft reason like that?
And, here we go...again. Saban. Saban had no "SEC experience" or anymore SEC contacts than Gill does.
If anybody really thinks this way I have news for them. The SEC was barely kicking this year. For anybody to think the SEC is the standard for anything other than unorthodox offense and speed on defense their nuts.
I'm way past ready to see some fire, BigCat.
Muschamp, thanks for introducing the hammer to the nail.
Monica, I've been told you bring the fire...
Go eat at Gambinos and tell them that their Italian cuisine is fugazzi. They love that.
Didn't the internet insiders promise us Gill by 3 pm today? I need to know who these people are so I can sue them for breach of contract. I'm sure I can find a jury like the one that just screwed to Ted Turner out of $280 MM that will award me something.
Tigerfan-Hang in ther. Don't let them rough you up. I'm sticking with Muschamp. His name came up as a replacement before the WVA game. Sometimes the 1st one is actually the one.
Peter, the blog I saw said four, but your point stands.
i want a "BOOM march" ordered for on campus
Loose associations, hopefully not riddled with homonym errors...
Col Sanders/KFC post reminded me of another very famous Kentucky recipe, the mint julep of the Simon Bolivar Buckner family. It's a must read: http://www.thebucknerhome.com/julep/recipe.html
SBB was Confederate General, SBBjr (who wrote the letter above) was USA Gen. killed at Okinawa.
Pat Dye had tons of SEC experience and contacts. 8 years at ECU and Wyoming.
Oh yea.
Mint Juleps remind me of the infield at Churchill Downs, what a wild time that is.
I really think that auburnundercover may be the worst site out there now. Do they not realize that Turner would hire guys with ties to the southeast?
Phillip has lost it now that his magic info bullet has left.
The Rodney guy over there makes me embarrased to be a human being.
Alan, they're throwing garbage out there from "sources". C'mon. Who does that? Scarbinsky?
Sean - it's all true.
My inside sources tell me that Muschamp isn't the man. The actual new head coach is someone that hasn't been mentioned in here. Of course, my inside sources consist of tarot cards, so take that for what it is worth.
I think all they do is just read rivals and scout for their info because there is not one thing that they have said that hasn't already been written on another website. We all know as much as they do. They still said Nutt was in top 2 until today. Ludicrous and I thought Phil knew better than this than to just throw stuff out there. Whatever happened to just reporting facts Muschamp?
Steve, I think you're on to something.
I say Hire Dooley, I think hes the perfect man for the job.
Why you may ask?
Growing up my dad loved Andy Griffith, and would watch reruns all the time, my favorite episode had "the Darlin boys" singing a song about a man named Dooley makin moonshine. The name Dooley brings back fond memories.
Yes I think hiring a coach based on childhood memories is perfectly legitimate.
My inside source asked me for money and told me the chickens flying in his head smelled like q-tips. I don't know what this is code for, but I am working really hard to figure it out. I am also trying to figure out why my inside source dressed up like a bum for the clandestine meeting we had under that bridge.
Todd Graham is a guy we haven't discussed. Maybe he's the man and will bring Malzahn with him?
BOOM.
Before you're convinced you know who the new football coach will be, you have to ask yourself one question. How much does this guy know about barbeque?
Jha is that OBC in your avatar?
Reading about Mint Juleps and KFC > Reading about Intellectual Propery and the U.C.C.
Isn't it a law that if your name is "Jimbo" you have to coach in the state of Alabama?
Isn't it a law that if your name is "Jimbo" you have to coach in the state of Alabama?
But he already has coached in the state of Alabama...
SteveFC-
I'm sending Turner Gill a copy of this book for Christmas
http://uncpress.unc.edu/browse/book_detail?title_id=1541
oh sorry sean
can you people who don't html tags necessary to post active links learn it? I'm tired of cut and paste. I want to clicks and instant gratification.
Facts. Smacks, Alan.
ignore me, I can't type comprehendible sentences.
Peter, What you mean, you people??
Peter-
tell me how
To post a link type
<a href="http://whatever">Link Name</a>
Pmarsh doesn't troll the ITAT or Rivals boards. He has legitimate contacts. I know who many of them are ... and they're legit.
Just sayin'.
Practice
My attitude on this search so far has been: Report what I know to be 100% accurate.
I figure that's a good approach.
'Cuse fan willing to "settle" for Gill.....
Holtz "very content" at E. Carolina? - Maybe, but I doubt it. - But if the opportunity presents itself...ya' gotta believe he would opt for Auburn over (cold weather climate) 'Cuse job. - Still think Turner Gill is about the best we can even hope for.
SteveFC-
Thanks!!!!

But here's the deal. When you say "horse's mouth" produce a quote. Obviously if you had one it would be out there. There's reason to protect a particular candidate unless you're playing a game.
That's it, Jay. Anything other than the facts in the public forum feeds the havoc.
So, Jay, is it possible that PM's legitimate contacts are deliberately misleading him?
Or, perhaps being deliberately misled themselves?
So how many games does Lebo have left in his Auburn tenure? How many games are remaining on the schedule + 1 SEC Tourney game?
TarHeelTiger, you are welcome. I have known many with the same problem.
Brent, that's exactly it. There's so much junk out there...
All in all, one dude hasn't made direct comment to the press. We all know who that is.
...and then one man says the straight up, 100% truth. And that's Mr TG. Solid.
+1 SEC Tourney game?
What if he accidentally wins the SEC Tourney like Felton's UGA team last year?
PMarsh may be getting misled.
He may be right on the mark.
We won't know until later.
I don't think Phil necessarily trolls the boards, but I know his little crony does. That's a fact.
That's why we come here Jay, facts and all.
Thanks.
UGA has some good talent. Auburn doesn't.
Brown offers information to Finebaum on the air. Gross. Why???
Alan, you need a pic, man.
Jay-seems to me that PMarsh should recheck his sources. In one post you say he had the Rhoades deal not happening and it did. Now you are saying he hs reliable sources. So as was posted earlier, are his sources misleading him on purposes or are they just not in the know and want to be in the know so they just give him info and let him go with it?
I do agree when PM says that Muschamp will not be the guy. He is in a sweet position. When it comes to big money in college football, you don't get bigger than Texas.
SyracuseReporterToUpdateTonight
if anyone cares. hope I didn't screw this up.
Jay - In your view, what are the knocks on Gill? I think the guy has "winner" written all over him.
Jay,
Appreciate you not fanning the flames. I always know if I just check in on the HABOTN a couple times a day I'll be up to date an anything that actually matters.
Now if we can get Graham from Tulsa, I will switch from Muschamp to him. That dude can coach. I would rather have him than Spurrier.
Still say it is Muschamp though.
Todd Graham from Tulsa interviewing tomorrow. It's on the internet, so it must be true.
By the way, if you ever want to show someone how to post a link, you have to type this:
<a href="http://whatever">Link Name<\a>
Which ends up looking like this.
<a href="http://whatever">Link Name<\a>
It you type the link stuff the way it shows up, it shows up as a link and doesn't show them anything.
What pic should I use?
The guy on finebaums name is Rodney something. Paul eats his lunch everytime.
Speaking of fanning flames: heard a Finebaum state today that Petrino's buyout drops by 2 million on Jan 1. Anyone know if that's true?
Am I glad I'm not anxiously watching the Syracuse coaching search. We've got it easy!
If it is Graham, his doesn't play until Jan 6th. That is a long time to wait if he stays through the bowl game.
I would love to see Todd Graham come to Auburn and bring Gus Malzahn with him. Keep Rhoads as the DC and we are headed to Atlanta next season.
after a quick google image search for "Alan," I vote for this one:
http://www.neweraonline.com/im/about_us/team/alan_teo1.jpg
dream on steve
Malzahn was always my choice for OC until they fired Tubbs.
That's another thing PMarsh is stuck on. He says Tubbs quit. If he believes that, he should have left the newspaper 'cause no one would believe him.
Didn't Tulsa lose a game by 60 this year?
Graham and Malzahn looked pretty good against CUSA but they didn't look to sporty against Arkansas.
Peter,
70 - 30 loss to Houston, and gave up 30 or more in 5 games.
Gotta have players. We didn't look good against ARK either.
pretty sure arkansas put it on Tulsa
wtc, I do believe Tuberville quit. I also believe that he was likely given the opportunity to hang around if he was willing to make certain modifications to his contract. Just like last season and the idiotic comments about the hunting trip, I think he got sick of the stupidity surrounding being the Auburn head coach. A coach that has been at Auburn as long as he has shouldn't have to justify himself every single year.
Got my tigers unlimited packet today. May have to wait to see what they do before sending in the cash.
...and when did this turn into the "bash Philip Marshall" hour?
Best pic ever Pete!
Thanks.
I like the players we have offensively, although I would like to see another RB step up and maybe a couple of new offensive linemen. The talent to be productive on offense is there. We took lemonade and turned it to lemons this last season. Hopefully we can reverse the process.
AUTiger3, I don't believe anyone is suggesting getting Tulsa's DC.
Agreed wtc. You do need players.
We didn't look good against anyone. That's why we're in this mess. But I don't buy that Graham/Malzahn putting up a 10-2 record at Tulsa makes them great coaches any more than I think 5-7 makes Tubs a bad coach.
Understand Steve. I just think it went down different.
Tubbs was going to make changes, but wasn't going to let higher ups tell him what to do. When they ordered, suggested, demanded, whatever you call it, to make changes he said no. JJ said you're fired. Tubbs say pay me.
Can't tell you names, but I am not woofin.
Steve,
I didn't think they were. Just providing an answer to a question and added a little extra info.
I do think some of these guys that like to run the spread (HC guys) don't put much emphasis on D. I know thats a generalization, but I think it holds true in some cases.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, SteveFC.
As we have seen in the past season, it is absolutely imperative that the Auburn coach be able to put together a comprehensive coaching staff. The Tulsa guy, by employing a defensive coordinator that allowed Houston to hang 70 on them, has not shown me that he possesses such an ability.
OK, I stirred the pot. Now its time to sit back and see what happens.
WTC
Now if we can get Graham from Tulsa, I will switch from Muschamp to him. That dude can coach. I would rather have him than Spurrier.
Hold on a minute you are throwing a lot of names out there. I thought your source was saying Mushamp. Is your source backing up now.
I've voiced this sentiment before and I'll do it again. My general feeling is that the progression of candidates in this search is headed in the wrong direction.
If you want to win, you go get someone that has shown the ability to do that consistently in a BCS conference. Someone who has played with the big boys and gotten it done. Bama tried to monkey around with a couple lower level coaches, got nowhere and finally layed out the money for Saban. Why not learn from their mistakes? We are at least that smart, right? The more names that get brought up, the less and less impressive they get.
I can only hope that Jay is dead on target, and we already have someone on board who has a team still active, so we are having to wait. Better yet if that team is playing on Jan 1 or after.
I pains me to see people say they would be okay with coaches from Tulsa, or Buffalo, or LA Tech, etc. Those guys could be great, but I'd a whole lot rather have someone who has been there and done that (there being BCS conf, and that being conf. or nat'l champ).
tiger3 would utah's coach be alright.
jhag,
Arkansas beat Tulsa by 7, and they scored late to do that.

Test
Oh man...that previous test failed.
That one worked. Thanks Peter. Now if I can only remember that code.
44,
I'm reading into you're question something that may not be there, but I assume you're making reference to Meyer now at UF as much as the guy at Utah this year.
I'm not saying that any of the guys at the smaller schools wouldn't be able to get the job done, just that they are a bit of a gamble. May work, may not. UF hit it big with Meyer no doubt.
The thing is, we let a guy go who had been here 10 years, and while 08 was really ugly, he's a pretty well respected coach and did a pretty good job. So when you let a guy like Tuberville go and the AD comes out and says that money will not be an object, I would think our sites may be set a little higher than the group of names that's been interviewed and is currently being discussed.
Of course, maybe money is no object because after buying Tubs out we don't have any, so a big contract is out of the question. But I don't really think that is the case.
As far as the current Utah coach, I would put him up there with Gill or Graham or Petersen or any of the other guys that have done well at smaller schools.
What happened to everyone?
Good question AU1N04
The scary thing about Graham is he was a DC not a OC, hes a defensive guy and his defense was that bad
tiger3, What would you consider big name? I think Davis maybe only true big name at the college level.
I see your point about not taking a chance on small school coach but they all have to start some where.
some of you peeps are in the campfire..including Jay G..but nobody is speaking...
SO far in the coaching search I see that it has been Measure for Measure pretty much Much ado about Nothing. I believe that for everyone who is wanting Muschamp that it will be Love's Labours Lost. Of course, hopefully by the Twelfth Night we may have a coach. There is Tempest brewing right now on all the boards about the pluses for one and the negatives for another.
I just look to Jay G to guide us all through this.
44,
The way that everything has gone down Auburn needs a big name at this point. We got rid of xCTT for coordinators?
JGT has said over and over that it most likely is a done deal and we don't even know who it is yet.
Just sayin'
On another note Harrell says Leach is staying at Texas Tech.
What is this kid Leach's agent?
jhag - I was just checking but nothing is burning.
http://chatroll.com/habotn-campfire and were on the air
Graham would be a good AU coach.
44,
Davis is a good start. I wasn't a big fan of that option to start with, but I've come around on that a bit.
Not really right to complain if you don't have solution, I know. But I don't have a great answer other than to say that if money is truly no object, then don't limit the search. Start with guys who are winning games as HEAD COACHES in BCS conferences, or who have shown the ability to do so. Some examples (not endorsing any of these, and they're in no order) would be Spurrier, P. Johnson, Kelly, Gundy, etc.
Then again, if money is really no concern, go ask Bob Stoops or Pete Carroll to name their price and be done with it. Okay, I realize that's not legit, but I think you get my point.
I just hope that Jacobs at least started somewhere higher up than the folks we actually KNOW have interviewed. Jay seems to think that's the case, so I'll go with that till proven otherwise.
WTC, I think you are right on. They had demands on Tubby to fire more than one offensive coach. They thought he would do it. Tubby really did decide he had enough, be he wouldn't go quietly without that buyout.
Gill returning to Syracuse for 2nd interview?
If you want to win, you go get someone that has shown the ability to do that consistently in a BCS conference. Someone who has played with the big boys and gotten it done.
OK, but which HCs out there meet that criterion?
Here's a list of coaches who have consistently won 9 or more games a year in a BCS conference at some point in their careers - tell me which of these you think AU (or any other school, FTM) would have a shot at hiring away from their present gigs:
SEC - Meyer, Miles, Petrino, Richt, Saban, Spurrier
Big12 - Brown, Stoops
Big10 - Paterno, Tressell
ACC - Beamer, Bowden, Davis
PAC10 - Carroll
Big East - none
You see, there just aren't a lot of those 'sure thing' guys out there at any given time.
Interestingly, outside of Spurrier, Davis, Saban, and Petrino, those guys became 'proven' in the places where they are currently working. Which means they were hired out of situations like Gill or Muschamp.
In a sense, Bama got lucky with Saban. A 'proven' HC who made a bad decision to jump to the NFL and was ready to get out if the money was right. I don't see anyone like him out there right now.
Tiger3
Do you consider Mushchamp a big name? I think so since he Texas coach in waiting. Until I see a coach named that isn't Muschamp he is my pick no matter what is being said in the media.
Except for the horrible way he treated Rice, Graham would make a great hire.
The purest blood with a straight shooting career appears to be Turner Gill.
Gill, may not be ready to take this spot though. By that, he may want to remain on an upward trajectory, (read: easier conference) and steady on his path back to Nebraska.
Gill, may be the next Bryant in the making. Who wants to get your head bashed in at an SEC school when you are looking to go home one day as the hero.
Kelly would be intriguing.
Davis will not leave where he is.
Paul Johnson could have had great jobs before. Doubtful he leaves for one after signing a contract last year. I get that he is not all about the money.
Muschamp makes sense. Not sure it makes sense for Auburn though. A little like Nebraska hiring PEllini.
Hey everyone. Just arrived at Disney World. Hopefully we have a coach soon.
Speaking of rumor names, I see that Steve Spurrier is back in the mix in the rumor mill. This search gets crazier by the day. I still say hire Turner Gill.
Eddie,
Is it true that you are at Disney World to interview Goofy for the newly created position of Athletic Director in Waiting?
Your buddy,
Jet
I just don't know how I feel about Spurrier. I mean he's 63 now...does he still have that fire? Surely he could recruit better down here.
I wouldn't mind Spurrier as HC and Gill as OC/QB coach and HCIW :) I mean isn't that the cool thing to do now? Jump on the HCIW bandwagon?
Gill is already a HC, he wouldn't take a job as a HC in waiting.
Spurrier is 28-21 at SC, 15-17 in the SEC. I just don't know if he has one more big run in him or not.
If there is some BIG name out there that "they" have had chosen for a while, I don't understand what is taking forever. At least it feels like forever. I'm just impatient.
I wish the internet didn't exist during Auburn coaching searches
What did people do at work before the internet? Did people actually work?
During this search, I am cramming 2 days of work into a week.
Nice avatar Aubie...
im starting to think this won't get over with until the end of the bowl season or possibly the NFL season. thoughts?
Thanks Fake,
Lt Drebin is hot on the trail.
Jane: I've heard police work is dangerous.
Frank: It is. That's why I carry a big gun.
Jane: Aren't you afraid it might go off accidentally?
Frank: I used to have that problem.
Jane: What did you do about it?
Frank: I just think about baseball.
Gill as OC and HCIW would be a possibility, but that is something the new HC would decide. Gill would definitely make more as the OC/HCIW than he makes at Buffalo.
I got a feeling Darth Visor is the man.
Gill will get a job somewhere else as a HC. He won't come to Auburn as an OC, plus I'm not sure Auburn would pay 350K or more for him to be an OC.
Plaxico should have thought about baseball.
WarEagleRK, Auburn was willing to pay Muschamp more than that to be the DC. My guess is that someone like Gill would love the chance to coach under Spurrier. I am not convinced Spurrier would choose him.
Mon- TOO Funny!!!
coach crum, perhaps we'll all just wake up and discover it was all just A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Mon,
Excellent!
Well the good news for a lot of folks is that business slows down a bunch this time of year (retail is an obvious exception) so really I'm not being THAT unproductive based on my work load.
I think, offcially, the search is a week old today. It occured to me that hires like this might take longer than a week. Heck it took me four weeks of interview process, etc, before I got this job.
My guess is that we hear something before the end of next week. It is possible that we hear by the end of this week, but I am not getting the feeling anything is going to happen soon.
Turner Gill is one of 4 or 5 African American head coaches currently in college football.
If he were to step down to be an OC at another school, imagine the heat he would get for doing that?
Steve, I agree with you. Unless it is a name that has already been interviewed, I doubt that we will hear anything by Friday. Unless of course the "smokescreen" theory is the right one and we've already got a guy waiting in the wings.
RK, I agree, the talk of him going to be an OC is crazy. Not from a PR standpoint but I heard the reason he took the Buffalo job was to prove he could be a HC and build a program. If he doesn't get any offers he still can coach up Buffalo another year and will most likely be hired away then.
It seems like a job of this importance JJ would take his time and make sure he picks the right man for the job, but I guess we are terribly inpatientand want to know now.
I believe in Boom and love him.
We live in a microwave world and he's over there bakin' in a convential oven. Terrible.
Jet, what do you make of defense being suspect to big plays? Doesn't bother you at all?
Rumor I hear is that Boom has the offer on his desk. His to take or leave. General consensus is he will not take it, thus the continued interviewing.
I want coach Turner Spurrier!
If BOOM stays at Texas he has no idea how long MB will coach before he retires. He could be a Bowden or a Petrino.
But he's getting paid almost a Mil to coach a defense, he's at one of the richest programs in the country and I doubt very much that MC will be another Paterno.
Is it Jimbo who has the clause in his Coach in Waiting contract that says "when Bowden leaves or 2009 whicherver comes first" sort of thing? I wonder if Muschamp has the same.
It would be interesting Monica, but even if he does, I'm sure his deadline is a few years out. JF has been at FSU for two seasons already so that's why we're hearing about it.
I have 2 problems with Boom.
First, is his db coaching technique - db's taught not to look back for the ball. Crazy Les' call last year is not so crazy when you know that the AU db is not even going to look back for the ball. Normally, 3 things can happen - int, incomplete, catch. Les knew that he could remove int from the equation.
Secondly, his jumping around like a drunken frat boy screaming obscenities drives me nuts!
(cue Warren Zevon's "Excitable Boy")
Monica,
I don't think they have reported anything like that for Muschamp... I think Fisher's is he gets 2.5 million if he isn't the head coach by 2011.
Aubie,
"3 things can happen - int, incomplete, catch."
Actually 4 things can happen, and if your DB's aren't trained to look back for the ball, the 4th one is a great possiblity, that is pass interference. That happened to us a lot under Muschamp where the DB was face guarding the WR, the WR moves for the ball and the DB is blocking him from getting it without making a move on the ball. The ref throws the flag every time.
My strong preference for Boom goes beyond two long passes in the Georgia game in 2007 and a dropped woulda-been INT in the Texas Tech Game this year. As for the Georgia game in '06, the offense was a more than equal partner in that train wreck.
We need a coach with incredible energy, vigor and charisma to compete against the likes of Saban, Richt, Miles, Nutt, et. al.
To be honest with you, I am looking for the 2009 version of Pat Dye in 1981. I think that coach is Muschamp. Someone who is young, hungry, driven. Someone who understands the lay of the land, and wants to conquer it and knows how to get it done.
Jet, it appears you want me as your next head coach, and I am honored.
RK,
Great point!
Now instead of 2 bad outcomes to 1 good outcome, you have flipped the odds.
Les is actually a genius! Who woulda thunk it? (maybe and idiot savant)
I wouldn't mind Muschamp as the HC either. I just get frustrated with the DB's under his watch who don't seem to know when the ball is in the air.
The 06 & 07 UGA games weren't helped by 7 Brandon Cox interceptions.
Mike F'n Shula has that intensity too, so I am assuming he is my competition for the head coaching job.
I will start assembling as staff as soon as possible. I will look for guys with similar intensity.
I'm thankful for Saban setting the bar so high.
RK the int's come from the fact that we got behind early and that was a recipe for disaster with the offense those two years. So really, the UGA quick strikes in an indirect way, attributed to those INTs.
Jet,
I understand your points. He definitely has a strong upside. He is not in my top two, but I would not be disappointed either.
Steve, actually, I want to be the coach. I might can arrange a HCIW deal for you.
I guess I get a little mystified at the coaching of the DBs complaint. The LSU game was the absolutely perfect execution of perhaps the most preposterous play call in the history of the game. The Georgia game was two busts against what was likely the best team in the country at that point.
DBs are taught to look at the last possible second, and sometimes they don't get it done.
I've said it before: this guy will be kicking people's rumps somewhere soon. One of the top 3 programs in the country has made a commitment to name him their next coach on the promise that he'll stay.
Maybe that's enough for him, but we dang sure ought to find out if it is. Because training at the feet of Oliver, Saban, Tuberville and Brown is more valuable, more pertinent experience to me than coaching at Buffalo, or Tulsa, or Ball State, or ....
Sean, you are correct. We had very few weapons on offense and Cox was forced to try to make things happen. Unfortunately that is how Cox will be remembered.
Jet - You sure make a good pitch.
There is a huge difference in Muschamp's and Rhoad's defensive strategy. While Muschamp runs a more attacking defense, it tends to give up more big plays.
Rhoads style is to make you execute repeatedly and beat the crap out of your receivers if they dare to catch the ball.
Both strategies are very valid and have proven to work. It is why both are among the best DCs in the country.
Rhoads' defense gave us a chance in every game, the offense this year was just that bad. I liked his strategy better than Boom's.
In 2006 UGA was up 7-0 when the 1st interception came and set up a FG. We had 3 before the half.
In 2007 we were in a shootout with UGA, even leading in the 2nd half 20-17 then the turnovers started.
I thought Rhodes' D was to not blitz and be solid in your fundamentals.
The problem with that was, it didn't trick anyone so it didn't set up for many big plays by the D.
His D played too soft in coverage and inside receivers had a field day.
Also, in all fairness to CPR, he did have a slew of injuries that we've not seen on the defensive side of the ball in a long time. Our personnel was so depeleted at HC that we couldn't run much outside of the base defense.
Jet, Monica is right you make a good pitch. Just when I think I could settle for a Gill or Graham type coach you or someone else snaps me back to reality. Thanks. Muschamp has always been my pick.
Got to carry young one to dentist , don't hire anyone while I am gone.
44, I think we wouldn't be settling for Turner Gill. He has had lots of interest as a great young hire. Muschamp has been a good coordinator but has zero HC experience. I would be happy with both guys to be completely honest with you.
I want a coach who puts his pants on just like the rest of you - one leg at a time. Except, once his pants are on, he wins National Championships.
Paul Rhaods was not a good DC, if we wouldn't have run into so many terrible quarterbacks this year our defensive numbers wouldn't be near as good. Just look at how many running backs went over 100 yards on us this year.
RK, Agree completely.
Goodness knows I don't know the X's and O's like some of you, but even I could see that Rhodes' D played too soft in coverage.
UGA does not have a terrible QB. 17 points. Ole Miss does not have a terrible QB. 17 points. UA does not have a terrible QB. Outside of pts off turnovers, 20 pts. West Va, does not have a terrible QB. Come on Ron, let's be real here.
44 - If they call a press conference I'm not going to be the one to tell them, "Hold up! 44's not back from the dentist yet!"
ron, I disagree. Rhoades is one of the better coordinators in the nation and his track record proves that. This defense did get banged up a lot, but I do think we played very well overall..
stafford and snead had bad games against us. They missed a ton of open receivers... UA and WVA put up plenty of points
Ron,
I think your hat is too tight, just like Tom Jones' pants.
Sean, we did very well defensively this season and I agree we didn't give up many points considering who we played. Bama is probably the big exception, but even there we held it close until the offense decided to go out to lunch.
You said terrible QBs, maybe our defense had something to do with their "bad games." Ua and WVU put up less than 40. That was after our offense did nothing to help in the second half, both games. Boom's defense gave up plenty of points at times also. Considering injuries and whatever else, I would not say CPR did a bad job.
Steve, glad we're on the same page here. Context, context, context. To say we played horrible QB's and the good ones just took the day off against us, well that seems a little bit like nonsense to me.
I nearly came unglued when I saw Jerraud 10 yards off Julio on 3rd and 8 right before Coffee's TD run.
Soft is for pillows and romance.
I'm for forearm shivers and head butts.
Mistakes of aggression I can take.
Actually, I think Paul Rhoads is the perfect DC for Auburn. The guy just seems to like coaching defense and doesn't appear to be looking to become a head coach.
The biggest knock I have always had on Tuberville is not being able to keep good coordinators. Rhoads and Borges are both examples of coordinators I think we could have kept for the long haul that are very good at what they do.
I heard in an interview, that CPR gives his guys the option of where they want to start the play based on what they're feeling. As far as JP goes, his decision to play that far off. Either way, you pick your poison. In a WM defense, that play might be a TD and we aren't even talking about making them run another play to get a TD.
