LIVE -- Chizik/Jacobs press conference @ 1 o'clock

We're waiting for the participants to arrive ...

JAY JACOBS OPENS:
  • "He impressed upon us his blueprint to move Auburn football in the future."

  • "He was on the path at Iowa State to turn that program around."

GENE CHIZIK SPEAKS
  • "This is a very special day in my life. Jay, let me assure you: You hired the right guy."

  • "It was amazing how on the same page we were."

  • He's complimenting all the new stuff Auburn has built since he left in early 2005.

  • "There are so many things that indicate Auburn has a vision."

  • "The Auburn people? The Auburn way? I get it. I've been to some great places and not one matches the passion, enery and excitement of Auburn and these Auburn people."

  • "It's not just about championships. It's about the whole thing."

  • "Shortly after this is over, (recruiting) is where you'll see me. Today. We're going to recruit tirelessly, 24/7. We're going to work."

  • "I've made many great, great relationships with high-school coaches in this state. We're going to start in this great state of Alabama where football is very important."

  • "We have no secrets here. We'll have an open door for high-school coaches ... and particularly in this state."

  • "I want the Auburn football players ... to feel like they're back into an Auburn family. Some may feel it. Some may not. I don't know what's out there. I want all those guys to come back."

  • "We're going to move this thing in the right direction."

  • On the staff: "I have one goal: To make sure we bring in the best football coach/person/recruiter out there. That's my commitment."

  • On his offensive style: "It's 200 years old. On offense right now, you've got to run the football. That doesn't mean we're not going to throw the football. It means that you have to be physical. That doesn't pigeonhole me into any one offense. So many offenses are not one-dimensional anymore."

  • On his troubles at ISU: "When I took that job, I was ready to be a head coach. I had done everything I could do as an assistant coach. I was ready. It's not like I walked into that thing and didn't think it was a challenge. I had a blueprint in place. I put it in effect. I never deviated from that one bit."

  • How can he win over the fans?: "That answer is really easy. You have to win. There's going to be skepticism no matter who you hire. At the end of the day, what I do know is that this was the right hire for Auburn. I understand this place. I understand these people. I understand how to recruit it."

  • Why leave four years ago?: "My desire was to be a head coach. University of Texas had a great track record of moving guys on to jobs. I made the move. If I hadn't made that move, maybe I wouldn't be standing here today."

  • Staff revisited: "I've got a plan in place. I've got a really good sense of where I'm going. Some of (the candidates) are still coaching."

  • Initial reaction to being hired: "My initial reaction was `War Eagle.' It happened fast."

  • Joe Whitt Sr. is recruiting now. Phillip Lolley and Jimmy Perry as well.

  • "I love recruiting. I can't wait."

  • On Tuberville: "I have not talked to Tommy. I had a great three years here. I was very appreciative of Tommy letting me do my job. There's a fine line between coaching and meddling. I don't plan on micromanaging coordinators. That's why they were hired. I'm going to be out there and I'm going to be coaching."

  • "The expectations of the people aren't any higher than mine. My expectations are very high."

  • "Last season was a situation I hadn't experienced. We played with 11 true freshmen. We kept persevering. We learned a lot. I learned a lot."

  • Head coaches are big recruiters now: "That's who I have to be. When this is over, I'm hitting the road. I'm out of here. I'll spear-head that effort."

  • Last night's meeting: "We had a great meeting last night. I let them understand their leader is someone who loves Auburn. I love this place. You need to love the game. We'll hit this thing together."

  • Why are you the right guy for the job?: "I love Auburn. I know the importance of football at Auburn. I know the importance of football in Alabama. I get that. The coaches that know me in this state and the coaches who know me out of this state -- they know about my Auburn ties."

JAY JACOBS UP AGAIN
  • Surprised by negative reaction?: "I know the Auburn people are going to come together and know that Gene is the right man for Auburn.

  • Didn't acknowledge any other candidates.

  • "We didn't necessarily have a pecking order. We had a list of candidates we wanted to get to and he was on it."

  • "He'll re-energize Auburn with his physical, smash-mouth brand of football. All Auburn people will come together."

  • "We have agreed to terms in principle."

  • Said Jay Gogue couldn't make this meeting due to a schedule conflict.

  • "We didn't compromise our integrity during this search. I went through the front door. We're not going to through agents and all that stuff."

  • Discussing Carr & Associates.

  • How many interviews?: Won't say who and how many. "Gene was the only one I introduced the president to."

  • "There were certain people who declined to interview. Maybe that just weeded out some of the faint-hearted."

  • "We wanted someone who was a relentless recruiter, a guy with unbelievable character and integrity, someone who has been in the SEC and had been successful, somebody who has a passion for football -- Auburn football -- and his family."

  • Is money no object for assistant coaches?: "No object. Auburn people expect nothing less."

THAT'S A WRAP

As much as I hate to do it, Monica, I must agree with hip-hop and Brad. The President of a University has a lot more to worry about than just the football program.

you may be right Monica. there may be something to Gouge not being there. But it wouldnt surprise me if he had prior engagements.

If he hires a competant OC and Garner comes back for recruiting purposes this may turn out OK. Offense will be(has to be) better next year. If we keep Marks and Coleman we should be bowling next year. CHIZIK is a great defensive coach.

Blogger hip-hopanonymous said...

I'm just saying there's plenty of shady business going on at Auburn that Gouge not showing up for a press conference should be the least of our concerns.

Klaus, the best McCarney ever got to was 9-3. That is the best. He had 4 seven-win seasons.

Let me ask you? Is that what you want?

Do you want to be, at best, 9-3 and mostly 7-5?

I don't. I want to Average 10 wins a year.

The reality is that the majority of people in the world don't give a damn about Auburn football. I live in the North, and I can't imagine people up here getting mad if the president of a university wasn't at a press conference for football. In fact, they all think I'm crazy because of my obsessiveness with AU. That's reality...that Auburn isn't a big deal outside of the South.

ESPN is on this because it's juicy story. Once it runs its course, they won't care either.

If Turner Gill was the best coach for the Auburn job, why wasn't he the best coach for the UT, Clemson, New Mexico, New Mexico St., Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kansas St., Miami OH, Mississippi St., Purdue, San Diego St., Syracuse, Toledo, Utah St., Wyoming, and Washington? That's 16 jobs that he didn't get, and he wasn't a major candidate for most of them. Auburn is a better program than all of them...even UT. Why should Auburn have to settle for a coach that these schools didn't even consider in their coaching searches.

2001, Bingo. I was a big Turner Gill fan. I was disappointed that he wasn't hired. If you look at his first two years as a coach vs Gene's the differences aren't vast. Gene has SEC experience and he's coached at Auburn before. I'm not a huge fan of the hire, but to get bent out of shape and play the race card is absurd.

I doubt we ever find out what happened when they met with Muschamp.

I think it is pretty safe to assume that Pat Dye and others needed someone that was going to welcome him back in. After Jetgate, Tuberville would have nothing to do with them. By getting Chizik out of football wasteland in Iowa, there would be a debt of grattitude.

What it comes down to is that they needed a puppet to bring in their guys and make them feel welcome again. Maybe Muschamp wasn't willing to be that guy, so they needed someone that couldn't say no.

3:04 PM

FWIW, I'm with you Monica. Looking at the body of work, you can't defend the hire.

As Auburn fans, we still need to support the team whether we like the coach or not, right?

3:08 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Turner Gill will get another job ... How about Iowa State? I've said all along he's a Big 12 guy ... not an SEC guy, and it's different down here ... not because of his race ... but because of relationships.

Listening to some of you, we just need to burn the place down to save it.

Gogue falls in my eyes because he should have been there. He approved the hiring of a guy we're paying $2 million per year. He needs to be seen.

I'm gonna give Chizik a fair shot, and if it he doesn't make it in a few years, then he'll need to go. 5-19 matters, but so does the first half of his resume', too.

I'm certainly not going to look back and say we shouldn't have made a change. In my mind, we should have clipped Tommy in 2003, and again in 2007. The same guy was available both times -- one who's tough enough to stand up to TPTB, yet has credibility with them.

Some complain about Dye, but that's we need (the 1980s version) -- a tough dude that listens to the power brokers, but runs the program.

About two weeks ago ... I believe I posted it here ... I said that Auburn is special because of its people and its shared experience. But in terms of how it runs ... it's not special ... it's like everywhere else.

We made ourselves a convenient whipping boy for SACS a few years ago, but that's not the issue today ... from what I understand, we contacted every AD, avoided every agent until the bitter end, and did it by the textbook.

Textbooks are nice, but they aren't real world.

I support Chizik. He's the coach now. I've said that about 3,824 times. I don't support the way this process was handled and I don't support the current administration or governing body of the university.

I don't have blind faith in anything but God.

Steve...you can't directly pin anything on those Ol' Boyz. They slipped up and got caught once. Under estimating their contol is folly.

Mon...I haven't felt that this was racism, but suspicion from outsiders shouldn't be taken lightly. It seemed to me that Gill's converation with Barkley was regarding Gill's concern with racism after he would be hired rather than racism affecting the hiring. The Sporting news article yesterday sortof insinuated that Chizik was our only taker. As usual, we'll never know the truth...I would have hoped that AU would finally be above all of this...just don't know.

This is ugly. As I spouted all day yesterday...there is one source of all the unexplanable, ugly issues that seem to crop up at AU.

That doesnt mean I have to like it or support it financially.

We end up in these situations because the handful of people in charge know that we will continue to show up in the fall despite them underwhelming us time and again. It sucks. I wish more people would take a stand rather than say "oh well, guess he's our coach".

3:19 PM

I'm certainly not asking for your blind faith ... but are you objecting to the process, or the result?

Because no AD has been said they were blindsided in all of this.

Monica, I think you missed my point. You getting behind Chizik even though you dont agree with anything else is the equivalent of clsing your eyes and saying "everything is fine here, everything is fine here."

3:22 PM
Blogger Monica said...

I agree with you 100% hip-hop. People are willing to complain, but not take action if it is an inconvenience. That's what TPTB can usually count on. People say they will not renew their tickets, but that's just because they're angry now. That's why I wish I were a multimillion dollar donor.

Blogger Unknown said...

I agree with the process that Jacobs outlined. It seems like they did the right things.

Also, if you look at the criteria used, it makes good sense why Chizik would win out over Gill.

The issue I see here is the public perception of Auburn. The coaches that have been mentioned as being interviewed are the kind of coaches I would expect a MSU to interview.

3:24 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

The Gogue thing is nonsense. People are blowing that up as a statement that he disagrees with Jay Jacobs. If he thinks Jay Jacobs sucks, why wouldn't he just fire him? Isn't he the boss? I thought he was. Not showing up to a press conference as a form of protest seems stupid to me. If I screwed up something and my boss was angry about it, I would know straight away. He wouldn't just not come to my presentation to make a point.

3:25 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

The only people I'm upset with are the people who seem angry at Chizik. He was offered the job and took it. Nobody should have much ill will toward him.

There are a lot of people ripping on him, when all he did was take a really good job that was offered to him.

If you are mad that he was hired, he's not the guy to rip on.

Chizik gave good coach-speak. All of the right cliches. Adding as much of the AU athletic family as possible is clearly the best way to get a positive feeling. Arranging the player quotes to be released with the announcement shows that a good bit of PR planning was put into this.

I'm thinkin that this didn't happen in the past 2-3 days. Somebody got good PR advice and put it action.

3:26 PM
Blogger hip-hopanonymous said...

RK,

I agree completely. I'm sure Chizik is a nice guy and MAY be a good coach. I dont blame him one bit for getting out when the getting was good.

I do have the opinion that this is a monumental blunder.

3:27 PM
Blogger Monica said...

hip hop - no it's not the same - I say I support Chizik meaning I hope our team wins. I wouldn't wish a losing season on a group of students just to prove my point about a bad hire.

If I lived down south and were a season ticket holder/large donor I would not be renewing my tickets. I have no problem putting action behind my beliefs. Unfortunately, I don't hold any currency that gives me leverage in this situation. If Gouge or BOT were elected officials I could put my lobbying suit back on and whip a bunch of voters into a frenzy and make a change. I've done that in DC very effectively more than once.

This time I have no power to affect change. That sucks.

My wife, family, and friends give back the same to me in kind. I love them regardless and they love me ragardless.

With Auburn it is an unrequited love. We, as fans, love the university and football team, but they dont give a damn what we think of them.

3:28 PM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

If the complaint is Chizik over Gill and Muschamp. Gill and Muschamp are the two names I see people talking about the most. I don't see why everyone is overly upset about it.

Gill has one more year of coaching experience where he beat Ball State and almost nobody else of note, but he has a good pedigree.

Muschamp has never coached a game in his life, but looks and sounds like he'd make a great coach.

Chizik has roughly the same record Gill had at Buffalo after two years, has a track record as a good defensive coach and knows Auburn.

I'm just upset we didn't make a run at a Brian Kelly type, but I don't see why other than the pedigree and the good PR it would bring us that everyone thinks Gill would be a great improvement over Chizik.

3:28 PM
Blogger Jet said...

I guess we're all trying to make sense of all of this.

Jay ... most assuredly over his head.

Gogue ... too far removed, and unseen at the unveiling.

TPTB ... want the same thing most of us want, but think they've earned the right to drive the train.

Fans ... frustrated at the pace, the misinformation, the embarrassment of losing 36-0 and a watching a promising season go down the tubes.

If I were the AD, here's what I hope I would have done ... I would gone to TPTB and asked "What's your vision?" My guess is my vision was close to theirs (Boom and the Band). Because their financial support matters.

I go to Gogue and say "What's your vision?" My guess his vision is: Don't embarrass me.

I send out a general email to all Auburn Family and ask for their suggestions and prayers.

Then I would go and get it done ... it would be as quiet and quick as possible.

And it would drive all the HOTTIES crazy. And you'd hate me and call me an idiot.

But I'd be a half-million dollar a year idiot.

Once again, my beef is with the BOT/Administration.

Auburn supposedly picked the time of the PC. Gogue could have called it.

Or could he have. Maybe JJ got the time from Robert or Patrick and then called Gogue and told him what time it would be?

Monica, I agree completely. I hope Chizik does well, and I hope the football team does well.

I just dont think I will be renwing my tickets this year after all of this. I will still be an auburn fan just as I was last week, I am just choosing to spend my money on other things until things change around there.

/it wont make a bit of difference, but if more people acted on their beliefs maybe things would change.

SteveFC....AU went "Old School" with this hire. Not surprising.

I just happen to agree with Tony Barnhart and Mark Shlabach that AU needs to develop a diferent type of football product in order to compete with Saban. Unfortunately Saban has has become a force that can't be ignored. Gill or Johnson would have been able to produce a different product to attract recruits. Gill would have created tremendous positive energy. I hope I'm wrong.

This "Old School" approach will create some good nostalgia and AU can do a big group hug and feel good session between now and next fall. I'm afraid the energy created will only be internal and not from recruits. Again, I hope I'm wrong.

Where I agree with you and differ with others on this board is that now that we have chosen this path, we need to give it 4 years to see if it works. The "new style" sports fan normally runs out of patience in 2 years. I don't think that will be enough time to undo CNS's head start.

Hello everyone....... Wow, I really think some of you like drama. You all keep the racism thing going on like there is no tomorrow. Lets just face it, Gill did not get the job and Chizik did. I would have loved to see Auburn hire Gill, but maybe Jay with all his uselessness, seen something in Chizik that he did not see in Gill.... like DETERMINATION and MOTIVATION. If Chizik flops then useless Jay is out anyway! I wish Tubs would be AD and Lowder and Company would let Auburn run the Auburn Football Program.

I do not like Alabama, and I hate Saban, but he has complete control of Alabama football. He is not a puppet, with Lowder pulling his strings. I remember when Tubby use to be called the Riverboat Gambler.... Like Chizik he left Auburn after the 2004 season..... Oh how that was a wonderful time at AU!!!!! WAR EAGLE!!!
