Malzahn overview
Hey everyone. So we got our first look at Gus Malzahn, the Tigers' new offensive coordinator, on Monday night. He said the things Auburn fans wanted to hear.
Let's review those points:

Let's review those points:
- Malzahn plans to play "smash-mouth" football. He didn't play that way at Tulsa in 2007 because, as he said, the team didn't have the linemen to make that happen. Does Auburn have that kind of line? Things didn't work last season. Maybe that was talent. Maybe that was scheme. Maybe that was a fluke. If we learned anything from Tony Franklin, it's this: Don't judge an offense until it works against an opponent during the fall.
- Malzahn will have a say in hiring the team's offensive staff. Head coach Gene Chizik made that point clearly on Monday. He said assistants can't be "strong-armed in there," which makes a lot of sense. Of course, Tommy Tuberville had no problem doing that.
- Malzahn spent Monday assessing recruits and his own players via video review. That had to be an interesting process. Auburn doesn't exactly have an excess of skill-position talent these days.
- Malzahn will continue to coach with Tulsa through its bowl game on Jan. 6. He's doing that because, he said, leaving those players so abruptly didn't feel right. His decision also will allow Auburn recruits -- both current and future targets -- to see how this system works. Auburn will be discussing this game as much or more than anyone in Oklahoma.

Well, we do have great names for Coaches in Chizik and Malzahn. I hope we add Koonz to the list.
JayGT-
You are AUsome!!!! I'd be so productive at work without you. Oops, I meant to say I'd be lost without the wonderful Auburn updates you provide. Hope your mini-vacation is relaxing. Cheers and WAR EAGLE!!!
Koonz?
Enjoy the mini-vacation, Jay. Did you see the story on Marks this morning? I know that is what you had predicted would happen.
Thanks for the summary, Jay.
"He's doing that because, he said, leaving those players so abruptly didn't feel right."
I really like this about him and I would like it even if I didn't have a girl crush on him.
Exactly what ARE the names being floated about for DC? Can y'all throw out a few?
(No, Monica, Jay does not know who the next DC will be.)
Yepp, Jeff Koonz. He is an Auburn Grad who worked with Chiz at Iowa State/Texas/Previous Auburn stint.
No, Jay does not know who the next DC will be.
This is a recording. Had this been an actual coaching announcement you would have seen a JGT post on the blog.
Off topic-
Monica, how long did it take to get over the "crud"?
depressed, what did Marks say?
nevermind, i see Evan Woodberry and ESPN have it about Marks. bummer.
scottie b- ESPN had an article stating Marks was going to declare for the NFL. It had quotes from him also. Sorry I'm not a linker or I would link it for you.
I posted this in the wrong thread, but has anyone else seen Smartfootballs breakdown of Malzahn? It's an interesting read.
Jay G,
If we don't say it enough, we appreciate your up to the minute blogging online and especially like the summary, like a "day after" once you have reviewed your notes....
No body else does that... that why were are the H.A.B.O.T.N.
HOTTIES all hail our chief...Jay G.!
Doh, wrong link...
Here's the right one.
According to 251's link, Malzahn likes to run "jet sweeps."
Nice.
Ludicrous speed. I like it. Although that was the same thing we were told about Franklin's offense wasn't it? It was all about tempo? True they lined up fast, then took an hour and a half while they looked at the sidelines while the defense finally got adjusted, then ran the off tackle play for no gain. I want to be optimistic, but it sounds like what we tried to do this past year. I believe if it works this year, we can pretty much agree, it was a matter of coaching, or rather position coaching.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Will our linemen still do the meerkat imitation before every play?
One thing we all can agree on is Chizik runs a tight ship as far as information leaking out.
Sounds like we better start recruiting some linemen. We're going to need them, on both sides of the ball.
Jet,
You just loving the "reference" huh?
I just pray we have our O.C. now and:
Pray we don't do this!
So what are the chances we could get Pat Narduzzi from Michigan State?
Okay so I was just looking to find any DC's with a Z in their last name.
mistertommyd, I'm with you. We were told all that last season. I won't believe it until they actually make it happen.
I don't buy the argument that Auburn doesn't have talent. In 2006 and 2007 we had top 10 recruiting classes. The 2008 class wasn't great, but there were some gems there.
I also don't buy the argument that the Tony Franklin offense was a failure. It is pretty simple. That wasn't the Tony Franklin offense. It was a good example of a lack of offensive chemistry, although that lack of chemistry has to be blamed on the OC and HC.
In terms of talent, we have to have the most talented group of crappy receivers in the nation. Take a look at the recruiting info. We have a great set of crappy receivers.
I also don't believe the simplistic view that Todd got the nod at QB because of some loyalty between him and Franklin. Todd was just the quarterback that was able to run the offense. No, he didn't have the best arm, but the best arm doesn't always mean the best quarterback. Decision making ability is the key at QB and Todd had that. Kodi has improved, but it became very obvious he doesn't. If you want further proof, look at our production with Todd at QB versus with Kodi. Todd far outshined him.
Why was the offense so totally inept? Coaching. There is no question about that. We had so many bonehead moves early in the season that it is a wonder we won as many games as we did. I say it is coaching because there were so many sources of bonehead plays.
We have the talent. Don't believe me? Did Bama suddenly become very talented this season and have no talent last season? A truly pathetic job of coaching an offense will make any offense seem like it lacks talent.
Lets see what Gus comes up with. We have the talent to compete. We just need the chemistry on offense.
I think the OL's in place.
Anyone remember the 2007 season, the young guys stepped up and will be JRs this year.
Maybe Ramsey returns, who knows.
Who what and where did Marks say he was leaning declaring? I was on Chris Lowe's blog but didn't see it.
Kathy- agree with you on the lineman. I still can't believe CTT signed only 1 o-lineman(J Johnson) last year, and he will never play here. Plus, Raven Gray seems iffy at best, Andre Wadley's health is an issue and Freddie Smooth went JUCO. Last years class could be a disaster as far as lineman go. AU could really use Chaz Ramsey, hopefully he will come back. You just can't lose that many lineman out of one class.
I totally agree Steve.
TOTAL disaster in coaching with a terrible OC hire and not letting him bring in any ONE of his guys.
And the WR coach has been a total flop for years. He may be a great guy but he developed NOT ONE guy. Guys either had it when they came in and maintained or faded away.
Taking a break later today from my quest to get a restraining order against me in all 50 states ... leaving Rodney alone for a while to go to Tampa to visit world-famous Bern's Steak House and see who's hanging around.
Inverness Chris- I read about Marks on ESPN.
The only problem with getting Ramsey back is that stinkin Reece "I'm gonna make a spectacle outta this" Davis is going to be going nuts every Auburn game declaing how Chaz ruined Glenn Dorsey's career for the rest of his life including now when he can hardly play as a starting D lineman in the NFL.
Chris,
It's on ESPN. Presser later today.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3799449
Phillip Marshall's now stating S. Marks leaving as FACT.
http://www.auburnundercover.com/index.php
Is Ramsey medically able to play?
jet- no dedication. I can't believe you would let RG out of your sight. Maybe you can take him a steak from Bern's?
Players leaving early to the NFL will be a disaster this season. The NFL should have done things differently in terms of the salary limit. Kids will be almost forced to take a chance for the big payday. Many will end up not even making an NFL team. The flood gates are open. Guys like Marks will do well, but some like Coleman or Powers might destroy their career by jumping into this rush to the NFL. The competition will be tough.
Sorry for the late post.
I have to think he got great news from the NFL review board. No way he comes back if he's a 1st rounder and prior to the saeason he was a top 5 guy. I'm glad he did it early enough for CGC to recruit to it.
Too much risk to return IMO.
I think AC comes back.
WAR EAGLE Sen'Derrick!
Players are being misled. This was on ESPN per the Commish:
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says fears of a looming rookie wage scale are unfounded and collegiate underclassmen should not be misled into thinking such a system will be in place by 2010 as they weigh their decisions to forgo their eligibility to enter the NFL next year.
"There will be no change in our current [rookie pool] system, at least until 2011," Goodell told ESPN on Saturday. "I've explained that to some college head coaches, athletic directors and league commissioners. Any underclassman who is hearing differently is probably hearing it from an agent or from another source who is misinformed."
yeah you can't blame a kid for leaving for the kind of cash they'd get as a first rounder. I hate to say it, but you can come back to college. How often do you get a chance to have THE payday.
Don't bet on AC coming back either. Doesn't he have an announcement coming up, and it's from his high school. doesn't look good
It probably isn't a risk for Marks to go early, he's probably as ready as he's going to get for the NFL.
Coleman and Powers aren't ready at all. Coleman will need to learn better technique because you can't just rely on speed in the NFL and Powers needs a monster season to show the scouts to make up for his size.
The undercover announcement about Marks seems to also indicate Coleman is likely gone. I don't find it surprising, although I do think he is a guy that could end up getting looked over in the draft.
I am very encouraged by Chizik's comments about letting a coach do his job. I don't necessarily believe Tony Franklin was a bad coach, but he was a bad fit with Auburn's offensive staff and philosophy. I do think Franklin is lacking the some assertiveness that might have made the difference.
Wow - Was there anything in the Marks interview that said he recieved info from the NFL evaluation that helped him make his decision?
I hate it for AC - but I can see him impressing at the combine and making in in the league. Maybe going later isn't such a bad thing since you may end up on a winner.
You got to think once the word came down that both of their position coaches were gone for sure pushed these decisions.
For all the things Tubs has done wrong he did create a very tight knit group of guys.
Surely J. Powers didn't get positive feedback.
I agree wareaglerk, Marks will be a 2nd or 3rd round pick so it's hard to blame him for leaving, in my opinion.
AC and Powers aren't ready yet and need another year, especially because this draft class seems to be a pretty talented one. Though I fear AC will be the next Stanley Mcclover.
I would like to see A Coleman for AU's sake, but consider these things- Coleman recently graduated so a degree is not an issue. His size and playing out of position(for the NFL), probably will not change even returning to AU. A new coaching staff coming in, which may or may not be a factor for him. Just some thoughts from the other point of view. I hope he comes back also.
My guess would be that Coleman is gone but Powers will return. He is undersized but could end up playing in the NFL with a good season. He is a very impressive hitter and is one of those guys that seems to be in the right place. He just needs to be patient and play his senior season.
As for the line next season, I now have huge concerns with our depth, primarily on the defensive line. The offensive line will also be a concern. We need Ramsey to come back and Jermaine Johnson bad.
Tar - sorry for the much delayed response. My crud ended up being a viral throat infection that required steriods. Once I started taking those I felt much better in 2 days. The other stuff lasted about 3 more days.
What? "Gone"? Did you say "gone"? No one's gone until Jay G. Tate says they are!
Was it over when the Germans
bombed Pearl Harbor?
Hell, no!
And it ain't over now.
'Cause when the going gets tough...
(Patriotic instrumental music)
the tough get going! Who's with me?
Coleman needs to learn to play the run a little better and have better pass rushing technique, both can be taught.
It's the same things that caused Stanley McClover such heartache when he left early only to be overlooked.
miztertommyd,
I can here the drumz playing in the background...
I'm putting my eye patch on cuz it's just a flezh wound...im am with you!!!
Dammit let'z go!!!!
ZteveFC- according to numerous sites, J Johnson is going to Miami. That means NO o-lineman from last years class. That hurts depth-wise somewhere down the road, probably sooner than later. The d-line signees from last year are looking iffy also. AU needs a big year recruiting on both lines.
"Germans?"
"Forget it. He's rollin."
Anyway, there's this one play in the IB that I saw AC get DEE-EEE -Stroyed as Bammer went for 15 over his end. (I can't emphisizew detroyed enough when it comes to what happened but you get the idea by me saying I can't desacribe it enough.)
Now, isn't his newphew coming to AU and could the announcement at the HS mean something? As far as recruitng that area?
I dunno.
no comment, I just wanted to say hey to everybody.
Looks like its you and me Mobilz!
Good to see you here Coach Crum.
Antonio Coleman - I can't find the article now, but he made a point to say that calling the press conference at his high school should not be interpreted as a decision to go pro. He said he very much wanted to come back and play at Auburn, but he was waiting to see what decisions were made at DC. The press conf is scheduled for Jan 3
My son tells me that Auburn's swim coach has been diagnosed with a serious illness, has anyone else heard such information?
Mon - P. Marshall mentioned that Marks thought AC could be following him in his release about Marks' decision.
And is Galen Hall still at Penn St? - ESPN classic again -
Didn't he about get Florida shut down? How bad a coach are you if you have to cheat to get players to come to Gainsville?
When is Jay's press conference to announce whether he is going to ESPN or not? Is he doing it at his high school?
And I believe classes start back in Auburn on Jan 5th. Maybe he and his nephew will both announce their commitment to Auburn!
I guess we'll know Jan 3rd.
I think if a guy is holding a press conference, that means he's gone. He holds it at his HS in order to show the people he grew up with what he's accomplished and to hopefully inspire those in the position he used to be in to never give up... just hope he gives credit to AU for helping him get to this point in only 4 years (1 redshirt) and maybe points some future recruits in AU's direction. I think Powers may be gone too.
One comment. When people say the HABOTN is a nice place to go and find distraction and talk about all things Auburn and maybe a few things off topic, I say that the HABOTN has been a Godsend for me.
Yea Marks did say that. I'm sure he has been talking to Coleman. I would hope he also talked to McClover.
Jan 1st - Tate High School, Pensacola, Florida..
Jay G. Tate announces his intentions toward ESPN and Hannah Storm.
Meanwhile, Monica is honnggry!
I can only think of 2 players who was worse off by coming back for an additional year, Matt Leinart and Willis McGahee. I am always 100% for returning for another season. I agree Marks will be able to find a spot on an NFL roster, but I am not sure about Coleman. His measureables (Ht/ Wt) do not look like those of an NFL Def End. Also, I do not understand why a coaching change would push him into opting for the NFL...won't he be facing a coaching change if he gets drafted?
Powers should return PERIOD. I think CGC has a pretty good track record of working with DB's and making them better.
sorry I haven't posted marks stuff. I'm on the road and can't run the blog from my iPhone. I'm aiming to talk with sen in a bit.
Coach Denny, someone mentioned in another thread that the new baseball coach's daughter is having complications with her chemo. Haven't heard anything about the swim coach.
What's this about Jay G and ESPN?
Why would Powers even consider going to NFL now? He's good, but not THAT good.
Repost from cincytiger on an earlier thread:
Totally unrelated to Auburn football, but MaryLouise Pawlowski, our new baseball coach's daughter, is in a fight for her life this morning. She has been undergoing chemo and had her final treatment last week. Yesterday she went into septic shock and is in ICU on a ventilator. She needs our prayers right now.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Prayers sent for MaryLouise Pawlowski.
auto video play really slows down page loading and navigation.
Monica,
Here's the link you were looking for:
Marks Leaving for NFL makes comments
Stanley McGlover last I checked was bouncing around the NFL on practice squads here and there.
Marks has to go. Its a weak here for DT's and he has been scheduled to go 1st or 2nd round. You cant pass up that kind of draft.
Powers has no business applying for the NFL.
Coleman will play Linebacker in the NFL like Groves last year. This is a big year for Linebackers so its a bad year for him to come out. He is talented but I just havent heard much about him on the draft sites. Plus add the other jr linebackers declaring.
Also, word around my "Auburn" base hometown is that Rodney Garner is getting much love for the DC spot. Who knows if it has any weight.
Denny ... good to see you in the house.
Depressed ... maybe I have an agenda in Tampa at Bern's. Or maybe I like steak houses that look like French bordellos. Or at least what I'm told they look like.
Monica ... get well. But I don't think Jay G can announced his intentions toward Hannah Storm. This remains a family blog.
Koonz is hired sight unseen. He has a Z in his name.
The OC search went well, so let's break-down the DC candidates. We'll probably want someone with defensive play-calling experience (i.e., not just a position coach), so here's a list of the D-coordinators that are either available due to coaching changes, or are currently with a non-BCS school. (Moving from a DC position at a BCS school would proabably be a lateral move.)
1. John Chavis - formerly DC Tennessee. Fourth-ranked D in the country in 2008. Absolutely the best X-and-O guy available but he's older, and I wonder if he'd work well within Chizik's plan. He's reportedly headed to Clemson, but hasn't signed a contract yet.
2. Wally Burnham - DC South Florida. 13th ranked D in '08, 8th in rushing defense. He's older also, and has been with USF for a while, so USF may be his retirement plan.
3. Todd Orlando - DC UConn. Not a lot of info available, but apparently he's young and exciting. He's been DC'ing for three years under Randy Edsall with national rankings each year, including a top-10 defense in 2008.
4. Charlie Harbison - formerly with Miss Stake. Young and a good recruiter, with experience in the SEC. Could be a good fit at AU if he is willing to run Chizik's scheme. Defenses were solid but not highly ranked. His defense worked against AU this year, but that's not saying much.
Also, some good defenses this year at Northern Illinois, San Jose St, and Boise St, but I wonder if we'd be willing to go that far to find a DC.
--
Buck
Nix has been fired at Miami.
link
oposer, Chavis is at LSU so take that one off the list.
Patrick Nix took a leave of abscence to get that birth mark off his head at the Mikail Gorbachav institute.
PDWT,
I'm with you on the CRG as DC....
It's his to take I think and he's in the BAG!!!!
Jet, agreed Koonz is sooooooooo in there
The Power of the "Z"!!!
Oposer - first off none of these guys will work because they don't have a z in their name. Secondly you need to update your info Chavis is going to LSU
Nix out at Miami.
I'm still pushing for Narduzzi from Michigan St. Double z power
anyone have fresh news to report?
PDWT,
I don't know why, but when people spell Stanley McClover's name "McGlover" it drives me insane.
If not Rodney Garner - which I love - I hope its someone with greatrecruiting ties.
Anyone else heard Steele from Bammer to Clemson? And when asked why its was said its because Saban runs things anyway.
He's a top-notch recruiter and whould be a big loss for the Terds.
Ok - NFL question just asked:
Is Jerry Jones the worst owner in the league?
I say that's a stupid question. The worst owner(s) asre the ones who don't care about winning.
I read that Rush Propst thinks hiring Chizik and Malzahn were both great ideas. I find that interesting.
I am liking where we are now. I view Chizik as the defacto DC until someone else is hired. We have leadership on defense and offense that I think can work. Position coaches should fall in line quickly.
Compared to the crazy old zombie in Oakland, Jones is a fantastic owner.
Oooo - Kerry Rhodes from b'ham just called Brett Farvere-ah out on ESPN.
"If he wants to come back and spend his time with this team, in mini-camps, training camp, then he's welcome back. but, don't come back if its half hearted."
Ouchy.
This comment has been removed by the author.
Al Davis is now the worst owner in the NFL. At one time he was good, but that man has lost his mind. I'd put Jerrah as the most meddling owner.
The Fords are like the Smiths (former Falcons owners) they just don't understand football, and continue to make horrible decisions, but I do believe they want to win.
Cleveland's owners have to be in there somewhere, too, don't they?
Who in the hell called Rush Propst for any freakin comment about AU's hire?
Look, I worked at the Hoover Nissan Dealer that provided Propst with a new freakin Nissan Titan demo - which means he got a new one every 6,000 miles. I was in charge of that program - and he TRASHED EVERY ONE OF THEM.
He scoffed if they weren't loaded out - 40+ thousand and 4wd - and the last one he had, he was fired when he had it, he put 16000 miles on it.
Also, he wore a University of Alerbamer watch. I don't know where he got it, but it was a Bammer watch - please stop calling this guy for comments.
Al Davis is going to have his name on the Worst Owner Trophy if he don't step back.
Detriot's ownership is crazy. The stuck with Millen forever and ran the franchise in the ground and then, when rehiring front office people, hired Millen's picks.
Arizona's owner's are in there as well.
Cleveland got the death-penalty so they get a pass.
Chris, I am not sure who is calling Propst for comments, but they are interesting.
Sleeper DC pick: Tommy Spangler from LaTech. And he brings his DL coach, our very own Jimmy Brumbaugh.
As long as he changes his name to Tommy Zpangler, I'm okay with it.
This may be old but have you guys seen the ESPN NFL preview team covering Miami's introduction of the "Wildcat" Formation this year in week 3 at NE?
Gus Malzahn gets credit for teaching Miami's QB coach the scheme - the entire scheme:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76A82ANqKec
About 3.30 in you'll see AU's new OC .
Question: Who runs AU's Wildcat? Hmmm, who's a former QB at RB??
Who's AU's best athlete on the offense?
I would guess Fannin would be the guy. He ran a bit of something similar this season.
Guys, I still cant believe that you think the Auburn talent level is not down... Steve how do you justify on the field talent from recruiting stars? That 2007 class you speak of only about half the kids signed made it to school and the others are not performing at a high level.
Is the talent down, or was it just not being coached up in certain areas?
I know QB & RB talent are questionable.
The OL was fine until they made them lose weight to run the spread.
The WR's, who knows with them? They could have been a talented group, but they belonged to Knox.
I think the DL (even without Marks or Coleman) and LB's will be fine...the secondary is questionable, it depends on how much Hood & Thorpe learned from their playing time this year.
Special teams is a mess except punting right now.
Scotty 0- I think AU's skill level is down. Actually, way down when you look at DB's.
But I think there's some linemen thatcan play but this past year's recruiting class is as much a sign of Tuberville's burnout as anything.
He's alsways said linemen were essential to a program and he got one OL?
He can duck hunt all he wants now.
LB is a terrifying spot to me RK.
To look up and have Pybus playing in the LSU game was scary.
If anyone needed a RS it was him.
Freeman's gonna help but that's a thin spot. DB as well.
Here is a link to Mary-Louise Pawlowski current condition:
http://www.mlpfoundation.org/
Chris,
I'll take "Wario" for two hundred please!
Mobile - Thanks for the link. :-)
Jet - Thank you, but I'm not sick. I was answer Tar's question about how long my crud lasted. Also, excellent point on Jay G. addressing his Storm intentions.
So these are the HOTTIE nominations for DC. Who else?
1.Tommy Spangler
2.John Chavis -
3.Wally Burnham -
4.Todd Orlando
5.Koonz
6.Rodney Garner
rk,
When you read what you just wrote, doesnt that scare you?
I think Koonz isn't a candidtae - and I know Chavis isn't.
He joined the LSU staff yesterday.
Mon,
You can remove John Chavis as he's going to LSU.
I would add Tracy Rocker to the list and Reggie Herring also.
There is only one real coice for DC.
Chuck Norris
And yes Chuck roundhoused the z into an s
Zteven Zegal for DC; he shuts everyone down without even having to move his big bum.
These are the HOTTIE nominations for DC as of 12.30.08 at 1:09 p.m. EST.
1.Tommy Spangler
2.Wally Burnham
3.Todd Orlando
4.Koonz
5.Rodney Garner
6.Tracy Rocker
7.Reggie Herring
The "special" list:
1.Chuck Norris
2.Steven Segal
Who else?
Monica, I nominate Eric Berry as a transfer/player/coach. He can do it all. Chuck Norris has an Eric Berry poster on his wall.
Scott,
It's not that is scares me more than it shows we made the right decision making a move when we did.
This program was another year or two from being back to where Tub picked it up after the 98 season.
There should be talent there, it's up to the new coaches to bring it out.
i nominate peter o'toole as lawrence of arabia for dc. "no prisoners!!!!"
These are the HOTTIE nominations for DC as of 12.30.08 at 1:36 p.m. EST.
1.Tommy Spangler
2.Wally Burnham
3.Todd Orlando
4.Koonz
5.Rodney Garner
6.Tracy Rocker
7.Reggie Herring
The "special" DC list:
1.Chuck Norris
2.Steven Segal
3.Peter O'Toole
Players who should be recruited:
1. Eric "The Fifth Dimension" Berry
Who else?
Well Mon you GOTTA recruit Bobby Boucher
Bud Kilmer for DC.
Would William Wallace be more of an OC or DC?
wareaglerk,
It's sad to say, but I think you're right. A couple more years of dreadful recruiting and coaching and Auburn football would have been right back to 1998. I'm glad to see that Chizik isn't going to bring all/any of his assistants from ISU. Perhaps this means that Chiz is going to hire/fire coaches on their coaching merits and not because of the BBQ sauce they prefer?
did someone say barbecue? where do i sign? :)
These are the HOTTIE nominations for DC as of 12.30.08 at 1:52 p.m. EST.
1.Tommy Spangler
2.Wally Burnham
3.Todd Orlando
4.Koonz
5.Rodney Garner
6.Tracy Rocker
7.Reggie Herring
The "special" DC list:
1.Chuck Norris
2.Steven Segal
3.Peter O'Toole
4.Bud Kilmer
5.Patches O'Houlihan (my nominee)
6.William Wallace
Players who should be recruited:
1. Eric "The Fifth Dimension" Berry
2. Bobby Bouche
Who else?
rk,
good call.....focus on getting guys who want to play for Auburn, who look like they will get into school and are good people...there is lots of talent out there.
Mon,
I'll suggest North Mississippi Allstars singer/guitarist Luther Dickinson. Anyone who can step in and make the already great Black Crowes even better can do wonders. So I figure he can step up our D.
If not him, I'll take the Mike Ditka/Buddy Ryan combo from the 85 Bears.
Dick Bumpas. No seriously he's the DC at TCU and they evidently had the 2nd best defense in the nation.
Still in central Florida skulking and stalking around ...
Hope to get some definitive word for you in the next 24-48 hours.
Rodney's kids playing with Shamu today.
Good call, RK. Have you recently seen NMA?
I am putting myself at the top of the "special list."
I'm one part MuZchamp, one part Zelichick, and one part Gen. George Z. Patton.
We would have the "Stop, Chop, and Roll" defense.
jet, who makes the bigger splash- Shamu when he lands after his jump or Rodney Garner when he returns to AU? I say tell the bama fans to break out their rain-coat. Let the games begin.
Mon,
Last weekend in Atlanta. I'd like to go tonight in B-ham, but everyone I know has to work tomorrow.
Cool ,USC/Penn St Fiesta Boiwl from 1982 is on.
Two things: One, USC runs a very similar offense as T. Tuberville.
And two: How good was Pitt and Penn St at the same time during the late 70's early 80's?
Did Jackie Sherril bascially run Pitt into the groud or was it Majors?
And how many polish/italian kids are on Penn St's roster?
You guys and gals are hilarious!
Damn, so does Penn St.
I. C. -- I think Foge Fazio ran it into the ground after Jackie took the big bucks and went to Texas A&M in 1981 or 1982.
The big bucks? A six year deal worth $1.6 million over the life of the deal... $267,000 per year ... that wouldn't even get a sniff from a decent coordinator.
NMA in B'ham tonight would be worth a sick day tomorrow.

Monica ... I love Patches ... love him ... but I don't know if we want our defensive dodging anything.
That lead singer for "Kiss" was a pretty righteous dude himself!
What about him for DC,
or maybe we could go with the "lover, not a fighter approach" and get the Artist formerly known as Prince.
Patches is dead. If we are allowing dead candidates, then I vote Julius Caesar. The man was a great tactician and leader.
C'mon now... Dick Bumpas!! It's like Smuckers. With a name like Dick Bumpas you KNOW he's got to be good. By the way he's also from Fort Smith, Ark
Ain't but one man for DC -- BILL BRASKY.
"Bill Brasky once used a live rattle snake as a condom!"
"Brasky's family crest is a picture of a barracuda eating Neil Armstrong."
TO BILL BRASKY!!!
My vote:
Leonard Smalls
Name's Smalls. Leonard Smalls. My friends call me Lenny... only I ain't got no friends.

1) Jefferson (AKA Forest Whitaker) of Fast Times at Ridgemont High fame (I'm not smashing up his camaro though)
2) Steve Lattimer (The Program)
3) Bud (from Air Bud Golden Receiver)
4) Daniel E. Ruettiger (Rudy)
Terry Price has landed a job on Paul Rhoads staff at ISU
scottatl, how they perform on the field and talent level are two completely different things.
Someone to recruit - Samson from the Mean Machine (he's the guy that broke the other guys friggin neck)
Players to recruit:
Clark Kent
Bruce Banner
Billy "Shazam" Batson
The Kent kid was All-Metropolis
JayWall may be on to something ... maybe we make Prince the recruiting coordinator ... I bet the on-campus visits will be a party like it's 1999 when all the hotties, honeys and visitors say let's go crazy ... and all the top recruits are sure to get little red Corvettes.
I would like to add Jackie Chan to the special list....
I would like to add Vic Koenning as possibility
Zteve,
I understand and i have gone around with you on this a couples time...you and i just disagree about our talent level which is fine. In the end we are both Auburn Men :)
I am not sure it is all talent but the lack of talented depth...is were we fall off currently.
I am hearing that Jet's efforts may be paying off. Garner talk is heating up in the inner circles.
What if I said that I perhaps have Rodney on the verge of coming on board ... but not as the DC?
What would that do?
I am hearing DC.
Jet, What "position" have you negotiated with him?
Does it involve not being within 500 feet of him or his wife?
Aubie, do you know something about the Andre situation, giving us 7?
Aubie hahaha
AHC.
If this were to occur, it would be he best of both worlds ... getting Rodney ... and an experienced DC otherwise.
But, hey, if it's DC or bust for Rodney, then bring him on.
And, 500 feet is about right.
I hear Rodney is interested in being the new receivers coach. Apparently the prime qualification for that position is recruiting, which is his strength.
No insight on the Andre situation, but wouldn't it be funny if his contact with an agent happened before the iron bowl.
If they had to "forfeit" any games in which he played, that sticker is going on my car.
Can you imagine the ire of the bammer nation?
Rodney's demeanor would work fine as a WR coach.
"Hawthorne!" says Rodney
"Yes, Coach Garner." says Tim Hawthorne.
"You got a two choices: you can catch the ball or see what's behind Door No. 2." says Coach Garner.
"What's behind Door No. 2?" Hawthorne says.
"The bones of the @#$%#@#@$#@$ that came before you and dropped passes," Rodney says.
"I'll catch the ball, Coach," Hawthorne says.
If that did happen, would that mean Ole Miss would get the trophy as the SEC West Champion?
Prayers for Coach Quick: SWIMMING World has just been informed that Auburn head coach Richard Quick has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor today.

Sorry, I don't know how to link it and it keeps cutting the url off.
Now Propts is in Finebaum.
Wow - Fartbomb's struggling for "expert" commentary.
State AG Probing Andre Smith
This was posted by "Scotterjag" on the Bunker. NOt only do I agree with him it cracked me up. It's why nothing will come of this. I deleted some of the more colorful parts of the post.
"He wants to run for guv so I doubt he'll piss of 70% of the state by uncovering anything that isn't revealed by the state press....(colorful deleted)... This works out perfectly for the bammers because the few that are semi-literate infest the newspapers in the state and can now rationalize away their lack of professional curiosity in this matter because it's now in the hands of the AG's office. Also in their favor is that King's schedule is pretty packed trying to protect the citizens of Alabama from XXXXXX(reference the adult toy law in alabama), a fulltime endeavor to be sure. Also his law degree is from uat."
Kathy - If you want to know how to do the link thing email me at monica_wareagle@yahoo.com and I'll send it to you.
thanks for the link, kathy.
Sorry gang, but this hire at the OC position signals that Auburn is trying to cover up a severe lack of talent at the skill positions with a scheme. Malzhan is a product of high school hype and falling into a couple of good recruiting classes at Arkansas and Tulsa.
Will he be a failure at Auburn? Only time will tell. I am curious to see if he'll get that time and if Auburn can actually adjust and adopt a "modern" offense.
