1/5/08, NIGHTTIME

Here is a new thread to create more space in which to comment. The other thread was getting crowded.

Since I have to have some content to begin a new thread -- and DennyCrum had none to offer -- here is the UPDATED Auburn Football Coach Tote Board:
  • Gus Malzahn, offensive coordinator (Tulsa)
  • James Willis, linebackers (Auburn)
  • Curtis Luper, running backs (Okla. State)
  • Jay Boulware, special teams and tight ends (Iowa State)
  • Trooper Taylor, wideouts and assistant head coach (Okla. State)
Jobs still open:
  • Defensive coordinator (doubles as secondary coach?)
  • Defensive line coach
  • Offensive line coach
  • Wild card (might DEs and DTs be separated?)

ok, repost from previous thread.... something for discussion sake...

What about Bob Sanders for the DC spot?
Coached at Florida with Spurrier in the 90's as the Asst DC coaching LB's and DE's (separate stints)... was LB coach for the Dolphins for several years and has been the DC of the Packers for the past 3 years.

Has college experience, in the SE (FL no less), DC experience, NFL experience...

Grady Motley was the ultimate HS qb specimen. It was the year that Dubose got promoted to HC. I was in jr high at the time. Grady's family had just moved into town from LeFluer. Grady was running his mouth in a team meeting after practice. Dubose got p o'd. Neither Grady or his family were ever heard from again. They just disappeared. While at FLA, Zook was known as one of the best at recruiting but couldn't coach a lick.... I don't want head down that path..... I put as much value on being to coach up mediocre talent as I do signing up top talent...

Most successful coaching staffs these days are made up of two or three guys who can coach and the rest recruiters.

You have to have players to win, if you don't no amount of coaching will ever make up for lack of talent.

Michael, I'm with you. I don't understand the Big 10 hate. Although, I'm from PA and a Penn St. fan, so I'm partial to the Big 10. I always pull for the Big 10 in bowl games. I always pull for the SEC (unless it's bama, of course)in bowl games too.

6:48 AM

Jet, that's a good question. Maybe it's time for him to lose the sweater vest during bowl games.

6:49 AM
Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Tressel is lucky to have a national championship at all. He should be considered one of the biggest chokers of all time. If it wasn't for a terrible call on Pass Interference by a REF, he would have nothing of any national significance. I just can't believe they continue to get ranked high enough and take up spots in BCS games.

6:54 AM

If OSU's defense hadn't fallen apart during Texas' last drive, OSU would have won. Until that drive, OSU's defense kept the game in check. I, for one, thought Texas would blow OSU away.

7:01 AM
Blogger Jet said...

In bowl games, my rule is pick the team with "the point to prove."

That's why Ohio State was my pick last night ... and it almost worked.

It's why Utah and LSU were good choices too.

Alabama had lost Andre and was assuming it was a much better team. Georgia Tech had made being Georgia the be-all, end-all of their season.

It happened to us when we played Wisconsin.

Of course, it's not obvious in every game which team has the point to prove ... I'm inclined to think in the title game, it's Oklahoma.

8:58 AM

As for the Big 12, with Ole Miss spanking Texas Tech and Texas having a tough time with Ohio State, it appears that the Big 12 elite offenses are all they have been made out to be. Good defenses seem to make them look less than outstanding.

9:01 AM

9:06 AM

I also have concerns over the 7 turnovers that Tulsa had against ECU in the conference championship. Amazingly enough, they still kept the game close. I think they lost by a field goal. I won't be disappointed if Tulsa doesn't win. Ball State is a good team and should have beaten Buffalo. Their own mistakes cost them. But if the Tulsa offense looks confused, I will be very concerned.

j-z, I don't know about the last three years, but the coaches did great getting us ready for Georgia this year.

9:07 AM
Blogger Wakeriderof87 said...

Zteve, you mean like Tubberville did against Wisconsin, or like he did against Nebraska. We looked incredibly flat in both of those games and got stomped by Wisconsin and barely scraped by a Nebraska team we should have walked all over.

Besides its a bit different getting a bunch of young guys excited to play when they all know your bailing on them. After last years Clemson game, I won't be too excited if his offense looks explosive, but I also won't be too upset if it looks like a dud.

Your right it wasn't a big game, and either is the GMAC bowl.

I agree with what your saying, I'm hoping the new coaching staff can have the same great record Tommy had against Top 10 foes prior to this year. I just don't think this game is any way indicative of whether or not he (and especially not the whole coaching staff) can coach up teams for big games.

9:12 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

By getting a team up for a game, I don't necessarily mean winning the game. Sometimes the other team will just be better. I just don't like seeing games where we don't look prepared, like early in the season this year. The issues weren't with the QB. They were with penalties and fumbles, which are signs of poor coaching. Sometimes the other team will be better, but it doesn't mean Auburn is poorly coached. Tons of penalties does. I think we had around 14 penalties against MSU. We won, but that was one crappy coaching performance.

9:16 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Vandy is a great example of a well coached team. They probably have the least amount of talent in the SEC, but they won a lot of games by not making bonehead mistakes.

I really want to see us get an offensive line coach as quickly as possible. In terms of recruiting, that appears to be where we need the most work done. We need someone soon. Hilarious comment about Auburn's assistant coaching hires:

"Boy, is Charles Barkley going to be surprised, once he sobers up."

- From Kevin Scarbinsky in the Bham News. http://blog.al.com/kevin-scarbinsky/2009/01/gene_chiziks_good_hires_dont_s.html

Blake's resume ...

1987-1988 Tulsa TE/WRs
1989 Oklahoma DL
1990-1992 Oklahoma LBs
1993-1995 Dallas Cowboys DL
1996-1998 Oklahoma head coach
2003 Miss. State DL
2004-2006 Nebraska DL
2007-present North Carolina DL

He recruited 13 of the 22 starters on Stoops' 2000 national championship team.

Apparently spent five years from 1998-03 as a member of Delta Force. This tidbit, however, has not been verified.

I will be there tonight and try to get a feel for CGM and how it looks from the stands. I am not a huge fan of the meercat offense but I do like the idea of running a defense ragged. Kind of like what UT did to OSU last night.

G'morning Hotties!

Thanks to Kathy and shesaid for the play-by-play of last nights game.

So, what's the new rumor to chase today? We've tracked Trooper for 2 or 3 days, now that he's officially in, what's next? OL, DC?

I'm keeping an eye on Bob Sanders and John Blake as defensive coaches.
Bob Sanders - DC/DE's
John Blake - DL/Recruiting Coord.
Jon Hoke - DB's
What do you guys think?

Off topic...has anyone heard anything further about Chaz Ramsey?

Blogger WarEagleRK said...

Chaz has a "z" in his name, so I'm sure that means he'll be back.

Getting Ramsey back would be great. I wonder if getting Jermaine Johnson back is a possibility.

I was not a big fan of the meerkat or prairie dog offensive look either but that's about all you see in HS football anymore. If the kids are coming to college already comfortable with it then go for it. I even saw that in Pop Warner leagues this year.

Have you seen the arm bands lately on all players? Coach signals in the play and each position checks the 14 page arm bands to find their responsibility...next they'll have their ipods on the field with a video preview of how the play is supposed to work.

I still would be willing to bet that Jeff Koonz ends up on the staff. That is a gut feeling.

I find the Scarbinsky article kind of troubling. He points out the number of black coaches that Chizik has hired. We apparently will have more black assistants than most schools in the SEC.

My response is whoopie. I don't care what color the coaches are. I don't care to judge a staff by their color. I don't even care to judge a staff by their resumes. We need to forget about the color issue and judge a staff by restuls. I find it insulting that a coach is referred to as a black coach, as if it makes a difference. We hire football coaches. I don't care if Chizik decides to hire an all female oriental staff as long as we win games.

I'd make a helluva football coach....just sayin. I'm a girl and I can throw a spiral and catch one handed with a beer in the other hand so I'm qualified.

Re the bowl games...

I thought both Bama and Texas would walk over their opponents and that they should have played each other for a good game.

How wrong can one person be? The Utes dismantled Bama. I don't care if they thought they should be in the BCS. They were in the Sugar Bowl and should have played accordingly. (That sounds like I wanted them to win. I did not. I just thought it was going to happen.)

OSU should have learned their lesson. They are not ready but then Texas didn't show us that much either.

Morning Hotties! Are you ready for the second most important day of recruiting for your AU Tigers?

Win or lose, Malzahn needs to show a consistant offense that throws the ball vertical and has a solid running game.

I dont think hiring a DC will improve or hurt our recruiting at this point. All of the sexy hires have been made as far as recruits are concerned. I would think that the general consensus is that Chiz will have a solid D regardless of the DC.

Astatguy I doubt Barkley will be fazed by our hires once he sobers up. Black HC vs Black Assists = apples vs oranges.

Big Mike ...

we're in the same school of thought ... whether we like it or not ... football is evolving because of the skills and the styles kids are learning today.

It happens in business so I guess it ought to happen in football, too.

PF, it took me a couple of years to get Asian right.

10:52 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hmmm, Asian means an area of the world, where Oriental means a race, correct?

10:57 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I am reading a lot about the Tulsa offense and it seems that their defense declined once they started using this offense. It is something we need to keep an eye on. Depth on defense may become a bigger priority.

10:59 AM
Blogger shesaid said...

It's my experience that Asian people prefer not to be called Oriental as it is antiquated.

10:59 AM
Blogger Jeremy Eubanks said...

ZteveFC, I think its the other way around. The Orient is the eastern part of the world (sometimes including the Middle East), so Oriental is a spatial designation. Asian is an ethnic designation, I think.

Jerraud Powers is going pro. That sucks big time. I believe it was one year too early for him.

11:10 AM
Blogger WarEagleRK said...

I'm going to make my early prediction that Powers ends up like Ronney Daniels and undrafted.

11:11 AM
Blogger tigercowboy said...

Peter,

You sir are correct. Oriental is used to describe an item. Asian is the ethnic description.

Tulsa's offense could be hinder somewhat tonight by the weather. WE are expecting severe thunderstorms tonight about the time of kickoff.

I'm surprised about Powers. Seems like an Agent may have told him he's better than he is.

11:15 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

Dont underestimate Powers. He is a pretty good CB and he played the best WRs that we faced extremely well. And that was with him giving up 8-9 inches sometimes.
