The Daily Thread: Saturday

Hey everyone. This is the final day of my Gannett-mandated furlough.

This is good news. Only one more day sans HABOTN content.

I'll be live blogging the AU-UGA women's game on Sunday afternoon. We'll just pick it up from there and get back to speed. Thanks for sticking with me through what actually has been a semi-difficult time.

Fight the power!

gannett is going to shut down or sell their tucson paper (pretty small circulation). unfortunately, it is pooled with our other local paper (not owned by gannett) so that, even if it closes down, gannett will still be entitled to revenue from our other paper, thus weakening it. thanks for your efforts, jgt.

Alright, if its gonna be that slow in here today, I'll take it to 400 by myself. Thing's I'll be live blogging:
*variety of shirts people walking by me have on. I'll eventually find patterns and keep score
*fish I catch on facebook's Fish Wrangler
*Speculation as to what Jay G will have to say when he comes back. In the spirit of the furlough, I'll be fake reporting with unnamed sources. Hopefully, that kind of action will help me get a job where they basically lay me off for a week.
*Numbers
*Why visors are better than hats during the summer.
*other stuff.
*beisbol...probably not, though.

Visors are better than hats, because they allow heat to escape through the roof. I like having the shade for my eyes, and something to absorb most of the sweat that would get in my eyes.

I'm happy with Dayton's first start of the year, even if he didn't get a decision. A K per inning and no BB is satisfactory for my expecations of pitchers...not that my opinion matters for anything, but, as a fan, I'd like to go on believing the players need my approval.

Guy and girl just walked by. Guy had on a plain white undershirt. Girl was wearing a frumpy polo. I don't understand people wearing undershirts in public. If they were meant to be worn alone, they'd be aloneshirts. Something needs to go over them, I think. Maybe I could go ask and get some insight into the mind and intentions of an undershirt wearer.

Frankenbummer, I own a visor/hat combo head piece. It is a hat that you can unzip the top to, thus creating a visor. It is really goofy looking when in hat form. I used to wear it a lot in high school. I may have worn it once since getting married. Sigh.

Now he's going to sign with Auburn. He really didn't want to but the Don and Luca Brasi paid him a visit. Luca had a gun pointed at his head. The Don made Oku an offer he couldn't refuse: either his signature or his brains were going on the letter of intent. He should be in Auburn soon.

It is understandable for a recruit to carefully gather info and consider all options available. The time allowed up to NSD is enough for most recruits. At this point, You have to wonder that if info is still being gathered, just what info it is. If more info is not being gathered, then the prolonged indecision is curious in the least and at the most indicate problems that should be avoided.

I'm sure the coaches talk with him as much as allowed and of course they must be OK with his reasons, even if curious.

This sort of behavior, even if legit, subconsciously up the ante for a lot of folks(especially the press). The coaches will need to keep that from becoming a distraction.

6:14 PM
Blogger Jet said...

Can't see this getting them in the NCAAs as LSU's RPI was last seen in the 40s ... but it can get AU on the NIT radar screen.

I think the only path to the Big Dance an SEC tournament miracle.

6:17 PM
Blogger Miller said...

I don't have super high expectations... but I do expect to beat Elon.

I expect them to do the simple things... pitching, I expect the pitchers to throw 1st pitch strikes and work ahead of the hitter, and I expect them not to plunk a guy when they have him in a 0-2 count (especially to load the bases with 2 outs)... I expect hitters to put the ball in play... way too many strikeouts from the middle of the lineup.

I understand it is early... but these are things hammered into your skull from the time you're 10 as a baseball player... they are fundamental aspects of the game... AU has got to get back to fundamental baseball.

6:18 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

AU at big dance only if they run the table at least to SEC championship game, imo.

Attendance will really work against them for NIT; I think they'll need at least 20 wins, which is a possibility.

6:21 PM
Blogger Miller said...

AU has to come out hot, and play fast and furious to open the game tonight to have a chance. Frankie and Tay have to be on from outside, Barrett and Barbour have to be very active, Vot especially on the boards....

If they can shoot 65% or better from the line and get there 10+ times, I think they have a chance to win tonight...

AUMom- Wake Forest is a pretty campus, but not quite up there with the other 3. However, it's a lot easier to find Krispy Kremes in Winston-Salem. And you can eat at Mr. Barbecue on Peters Creek Pkwy.

D. Miller, I meant for Powers that 4.5 would be a good time based on what I heard about him while at AU. He was never known as a burner on the 40 times, but he was usually the top cover man for Auburn. I tend to think his height and 40 times will hurt him, but hopefully not. Maybe he will perform better than expected. I am still surprised he came out early.

in the next women's race I think AU has 3 swimmers to FL's one. Should gain some points there. However, in the 2 finals after that, I think FL has 4 swimmers total to our 1 :-(
After those individual events, only thing left for women will be 400m freestyle relay.

Women - Team Rankings - Through Event 35

Florida has more swimmers than AU in the final 2 individual events and should regain the lead.

I'm back to bring you more shirt talk....went to a seminar today and the speaker was wearing a black mock turtleneck a la Steve Jobs (the real one) under his sports coast. I know it's technically winter, but a mock turtleneck in Miami? White pants might be more appropriate, given the surroundings.

good move NoVa, thanks for the update. I'm still at the kitchen counter.

AU MEN have probably clinched the SEC Championship in Swim/Dive, though I don't know how to do all the math. They lead Florida by almost 200 points with a couple swim events and platform diving left.

'Bama star mucks up draft status'

Alabama's Andre Smith plummeting

By Jason Cole

INDIANAPOLIS - Alabama offensive tackle Andre Smith continued to tumble in the eyes of NFL coaches and executives when he couldn't be located Saturday morning to participate in the workouts for linemen.

That follows the bad reviews Smith got from coaches from Alabama and the perception that he did a poor job of interviewing with the media and teams. Smith turned off several coaches when he told them he wasn't participating in the workout because he started training late.

"The kid is killing himself," a source close to Smith said. "He basically told the NFL people he's lazy. This is incredible. ... It doesn't matter if you're ready or not. You at least show up at the workouts and watch."

Nice showing for UAT!

Anyone got stats on Lebo's AU record when trailing at half? Home vs away?

THT, thanks for reminding me of UVa's campus. It is, indeed, lovely. Georgetown's is also lovely. It is almost an oasis in the middle of Babylon (or Hell, as the case may be.)

I am not fond of big city campuses so University of Washington, Rice, and Ga Tech are out. Vandy's is pretty though.

Amazingly, AU is 2 for 2 at the line.

Shooting 45% from the field. Unfortunately, LSU is hitting 55%

DoWhat, I read in another article on Smith that NFL teams in contact with Alabama officials had not gotten good reports on Smith's character. Hard to believe with so much on the line he could behave in this manner. I think now there may have been issues before the agent signing.

Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Lebo's a fantastic Xs and Os guy.

7:54 PM
Blogger Jet said...

It's never a good sign when you take forever to sign with an agent, and when you do, it's an agent whose clients are a who's who of "Who's he?"

From what I hear, Lebo IS good with hugs and kisses, but I hear he has other intimacy issues.

WOW! I'd love to be at the aquatics center. I can't swim at all, but I still like cheering for my Auburn teams. This one is now a 3 team race, with UGA creeping into the mix.

Women - Team Rankings - Through Event 37

1. Auburn University 667.5
2. University of Florida 664
3. University of Georgia 654

2 events remaining for women:
200 meter butterfly
400 meter freestyle relay
The former should be fairly soon. The latter won't be until after men's platform finals and men's 400 relay.

Peter, perhaps Lane should send her out in a UT orange mini-skirt to read a letter of apology for his actions thus far. I can see a lot of positive reaction to such an event.

As expected, there is strength in numbers. Having more swimmers in the pool has paid off for Florida and Georgia.
Only the freestyle relay remains :-(

Women - Team Rankings - Through Event 39

1. University of Florida 712
2. University of Georgia 691
3. Auburn University 690.5

Florida's lead is, for all intents and purposes, insurmountable. Perhaps they'll get sloppy and earn a big DQ.
Team points for relay based on finish:
1=40
2=34
3=32
4=30
5=28
6=26
7=24
8=22
9=18
etc
An AU win and FL 9th place (or worse) will clinch the title for the AU women.
