The Daily Thread: Wednesday

Hey everyone. I have four days remaining in my Gannett-mandated furlough.

See Sunday's entry for more details.

Please feel free to discuss issues as usual in the comment section. I hate this it has come to this, but it has. I blame capitalism. It's the best thing going, no doubt, but its faults cannot be ignored.

Fight the power!

SeanZ - there's at least 2 in my house who've never watched Lost (3 if you count Molly dog)

Luv - ah, yes; the daily autoposts which Jay wrote before leaving for Guam. Yes, clever indeed. But blaming capitalism? Next he'll be blaming the Pope for the Gannett furloughs.

9:17 AM
Blogger Jet said...

SeanZ, you are not alone.

Personally, I must condemn Jay G's anti-captialism rant. Perhaps since he's such a socialist he should complete the transformation and start wearing a beret.

As for me, I will not work against the troops and let the terrorists win.

SeanZ,

There are apparently two of us who have never watched it.

Michael - thanks for the ).
Your previous post made absolutely no sense to me without it... of course, since I don't watch Lost, it made no sense with it, either. All the same, it's always good to be parenthetically complete.

TarHeel, I love your sense of humor too. michael's too, for that matter. All three of you are different, but funny nonetheless!

michael,I must respectfully, disagree. I thought Shannon and her "brother" (can't remember his name) did nothing for the show. Ecko was an interesting character, though.

9:43 AM

Dear Leader- is AU vs Vandy on your state-run TV tomorrow night? In the great free country of the USA it is NOT being televised. That's un-American.

They were just starting to develop Shannon's character and then killed her. That was dumb. Boone's time had come.

LOST is ridiculously detail-driven. My wife threw in the towel two seasons ago. I totally understand why people don't pay attention.

If I wasn't fully invested, I also would turn the channel.

9:56 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

CT, agreed. You have to watch it from the very beginning and PAY ATTENTION.

9:58 AM

We have all the seasons on DVD and we've watched through all of them and I still don't understand all of it!

10:00 AM
Blogger Monica said...

I know Lost must be a good show because people whose taste normally agrees with mine are addicted to it.

10:01 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I tried LOST, but the purposely jerky camera work was annoying. Additionally, the human interaction was irrational when viewed from the uninvested viewpoint.

JGT has blamed the unsavory (greedy) banks, shady poilticians and capitolism. I'm guessing that "Western Civilization" is next.

Capitolism does need a delicate balance of controls to be successful without self imploding due to unchecked greed.

10:03 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Monica, you should ask for the seasons on DVD for Christmas! When we start one, we can't stop! When one episode is over, we look at each other and say, "Just one more!" and end up watching like 5!

Lost and Damages are very similar shows in how they're set up. Details are crazy important. Not always sequential in presentation. Lots of drama...of course, the only time I watched lost was about 20 minutes of episode 2 from season 1, so this may not be an accurate comment.

Mon....I use a 4 gig sandisk Cruzer for my file backup. I even have a secondary one that I backup less often just in case the primary breaks. One of my partners used his 4 gig stick as primary storage for certain files and it broke....not fun

10:28 AM
Blogger Monica said...

Sean - I recommend it. I didn't expect to like and I really do.

Hoopie - I'm thinking about doing the same. It's just so much less expensive and I love the portability of it.

I like Big Bang. I'm worried that I connect with Sheldon's train of thought so well.

10:31 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

scottie b. yeah, I saw it. Wednesday is my late night. Don't get home until 1am or so, so I won't be live blogging.

I love FX originals. The only show I don't watch is The Shield, and only because I missed the first season. Still not sure what my favorite show is. Damages is in a tie for fourth with Dirt after Nip/Tuck, the Riches, and Sons of Anarchy in no particular order. Fourth is still pretty well liked, though.

10:33 AM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

Monica - I love my 4gb sandisk cruzer with u3. Since they now make USB flash drives with 64gb, can they/should they be used in place of ext. hard drive for your computer back up? That's the 64gb question. All you brilliant Hotties out there let me know.

10:34 AM
Blogger Monica said...

Hoopie - I think you're a little more concrete than Sheldon. :-)

I met a techie the other day and if you were just listening to him he could have BEEN Sheldon. I couldn't help cracking up! So much so I finally had to tell him why I was laughing. He looked a little bit like him too.

Mon...our civil engineer paid for offsite, automatic, nightly backup. His office burned i down in a fire. They found out that the backup wasn't working properly when trying to recover. Thus.... another ugly computer backup story.

10:38 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

not a fan of using usb flash drives as backup. I've had more than one become corrupted, and know people that have dropped them in parking lots with sensative data on them. They're great for file portability/transfer, but I'd be wary of backing up anything important/confidential on them. External hard drives are getting ridiculously cheap.

10:39 AM
Blogger Peter Frankenschmidt said...

Hoopie, was the offsite backup company held liable for the loss of whatever was supposed to be being backed up? I sure hope so.

10:42 AM

Hoopette almost "pees herself" laughing at Sheldon.

It's the suppressed inner geek that I worry about. I tend to agree with his reasoning in social situations. hmm...Maybe that's why wifey laughs so heartily.

I'll "never" need 500GB; currently need less than 50GB for complete hard drive backup (programs and files)

I have WD hard drive that "died" for 2 months. I tried all sorts of CPR on that thing and got no response. Bought a network drive (not WD) and a few weeks later the WD drive (which was still plugged up) miraculously comes back to life. Both have intermittent communcation issues with the PCs. I've not had any such problems with flash drives (yet). My flash drive is more secure than my PC.

I wish I knew a word to describe the look I just gave your post.

11:06 AM

Mon- have you baked yours in a casserole at 400 degrees?

Some Brits tested one like that and it still worked. Running over with a car... no problem. Shot out of a cannon... probably wouldn't have been a problem if it had not ended up in a thousand pieces.

11:07 AM
Blogger michael said...

I got a sweet Kingston jump drive for free at work that you can run over with a car and all that. But it requires a password, so I never use it. It ain't all that convenient.

I would go external hard drive for your home computer. That's what I did, and you would be wise to always copy me.

11:14 AM

I have no doubt Noah's concern for family/Claire are the basis for all his actions. But in the quest for their safety, he's flipped sides so many times someone should have "offed" him by now.

They've really convinced me there's more of a connection between Sylar and the new kid other than the kid supposedly knowing Sylar's dad. Maybe he IS Sylar's dad?!?

It's kinda like the gift shop notion ... look at the beautiful thing up front, then sell tickets for people Barkley's butt in back.

Help beef up the recruiting fund, ya know?

Jet, any Auburn Mt Rushmore would have to include Pat Dye. Shug was before my time, but Dye brought a new mentality to Auburn and the AU fans. Agree or not?

I'd probably have a steel cage match with the final 4 getting the nod.
Dr. George Petrie
Mike Donahue
Ralph Jordan
Pat Dye
Tommy Tuberville
and representing the players:
Pat Sullivan
Terry Beasley
Bo Jackson
Tracy Rocker

I know he left us and went to U of A but we can't forget Harvey Glance as well for Mt Rushmore... If not for the 1980 boycott he would have more gold around his neck...

I think Tracy and Bo would rule a cage match.. btw

Harvey sat behind me in freshman history. Great guy, at least until '97.

He can go on UA-T's Rushmore. We don't put traitors on ours.

Dr Habotn, nice call on Jay pre-loading the quote. He must be doing psychic work during his time off. Also enjoyed your choices for Mt Rushmore. Would not count Dye out of the steel cage match, he was/is one mean, tough SOB. In a good way, of course.

here is a fun game to play: Go to google and write in the search box "(your name) is " and see what it recommends.

Some examples:

"Monica is pregnant"

"Jet is a band"

"Will is daniel dicriscio"

"michael is knowledgeable about the changeable nature of the universe"

"Jay is working" (quite ironic this week)

Bunches of fun!

I'm very impressed with the divers and sundry topics being discussed while our dear leader is furloughed (no offense, Dear Leader).

My Mt. Rushmore 4:
- Vincent Edward Jackson (obvious)
- Dr. George Petrie (obvious)
- Patrick Fain Dye (for making Auburn football relevant again in the State of Alabama)
- tie between John Heisman (total contribution) and Ralph Jordan, Jr. (putting AU football back on the map)

j-z, I like it... hey Jay G., nice hat.

Sen. Jet ... stuck in the ATL airport ...

Here's my argument ... Ultimately, athletic accomplishments are about players ... that's why I chose the four I chose.

I love Coach Dye and Coach Jordan, and I have respect for Coach Tubs, but I believe our Mt. Rushmore should be for those who bled on the field of play. Coach Jordan, of that group, qualifies, but he's not in our top 4.

I reject Harvey "Willis" Glance because of his departure to the dark side.
