Big Cat Weekend

Hey everyone. We discussed earlier today that you would be impressed with the players Auburn would bring to campus in a few weeks.

Well, make it this week.

Auburn is in the midst of what it calls "Big Cat Weekend" and gobs of the country's top prospects are on campus.

Here is a partial look:
TB Lache Seastrunk, 5-star (Rivals and Scout), ESPN 150 watch list
TB Marcus Lattimore, 5-star (Rivals and Scout), ESPN 150 watch list
WR Trovon Reed, Scout.com 5-star; Rivals.com 4-star, ESPN 150 watch list
WR Jeremy Richardson, Rivals.com 4-star; Scout.com 3-star
WR Antonio Goodwin, Rivals.com 4-star (unclassified by Scout)
WR Demarco Cobbs, ESPN 150 watch list
LB Kahiri Fortt, Rivals.com 4-star (unclassified by Scout)
DE J.C. Copeland, Rivals.com 4-star (unclassified by Scout) **Tenn. commit**
OT James Stone, 4-star (Rivals and Scout), ESPN 150 watch list
OG Eric Mack, 4-star (Rivals and Scout), ESPN 150 watch list

That's an impressive group. Yes.

Good morning, JayGT,

I hope you enjoyed the match. Was the crowd loud and/or rowdy? Was the stadium as nice as it looks on their web site?

Have a safe trip home.

I like the energy and the effort of this staff.

They aren't hung up on what people say, etc.; they are trying to move the program forward.

Earlier I posted that the Kodi Kodi Kodi chant was interesting to me. IN explanation, I think he is very popular among teammates and I am wondering if he's the odds on favorite now since he was the one there.

What do you all think?

10:29 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I don't think that will have much bearing on who's under center...if he makes the the throws and shows good knowledge of the offense, then he will start.

Anyways, what are the possibilities of both Seastrunk and Lattimore? Wouldn't that be a bit crowded? Or are the coaches wanting either/or?

10:45 AM

10:49 AM

Sean I dont know what the end result will be as far as commits but I think that Auburn has definately raised the bar for recruiting. This is an interesting article:

Extreme Recruiting"I do think the idea will catch fire and you'll see other schools do similar things," said Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby SmartIf our coachs are half as innovative on Saturdays as they are in the off season, these next few years could be very special.

10:49 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

These types of things our coaches are doing may not yield immediate results but it's a marathon not a sprint, signing day is still a long way off.

Mon, you can't mean a Bambi would lie. I am shocked. I think Salsa showing up is just another good indication of how this weekend went. Yea, Big Cat weekend didn't garner any attention:) Hahaha, well, he seems to have been following it closely. Just another example of a cousin humper with a shallow gene pool.

Something like this is more important than just in terms of the recruits that showed up. Those that weren't there have to be wondering what they are missing out on on the plains.

I don't see how even a Bambi would be dumb enough to call this a failure, but never underestimate the stupidity of a Bambi.

10:54 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Steve, stupid is a strong word. Couldn't we call him ignorant of all things factual and be a little more PC? We wouldn't want to run off Sideshow Shark, would we?

10:56 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

Kids that like will hang around. You know, I really can't blame him. If I were a Bambi I wouldn't want to hang out with a lot of other Bambies either. I would much rather hang out on an Auburn forum because I wasn't concerned about them. Uh, yea, that is the ticket. He was here because he isn't concerned. Really, that is it.

BigCat,

Thanks for the article link. Clearly, Randy "I Want to Lick Paul Finebaum" Kennedy and his Bammer loving cronies in the statewide media will do all they can to make this not seem like the big deal it is.

Auburn has never had many friends in the media. Nothing new there.

11:14 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

When you have so many high profile athletes on campus at once there is no way it can't have an affect on recruiting. Also keep in mind that some of these kids may already be commitments. Yea, coaches do play games with when recruits announce their commitment.

You people just don't understand. Just because the recruits loved it and considered it a success and just because the coaches considered it a success means nothing. What really matters is the comments of a cousin humper. That is what truly matters.

12:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

And just because Under Armor All American Eric Mack declared Auburn as his leader this weekend means nothing. It is the comments of cousin humpers that matter.

12:11 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

And just because there was talk between the recruits of all of them playing together at Auburn, that means nothing. Comments of cousin humpers matter the most.

12:13 PM

This is sweet, about a minute in Lache Seastrunk says "hey tell Nick Saban he SOL"

12:23 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

And even more impressive is the cousin humper's opinion that Jeremy Richardson sucks. Obviously he must suck because he has an offer from Alabama and everyone knows they suck.

12:24 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

As for Kodi, I am not encouraged by what I have seen so far, but I do think there is a chance that Malzahn and company can make a difference with him. I don't think anyone believes he doesn't have the ability. The issues I have seen with him are all coachable things. He has the potential to be better than any of the other candidates for the starting QB job. He has experiencce and the athletic ability. Let's just hope things start to click with him. I did see a few times last season I thought he was starting to get it.

12:27 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good points on Kodi, Steve.

I will say this. In my opinion (which doesn't matter because what do I know), Kodi's biggest issue is dealing with pressure (both from defenders and in his own head).

How can they coach that for him?

12:30 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Steve....I'm startin' to worry that maybe you know toooo much about cousin humpers..haha.

Our coaches have certainly created serious interest among a talented group of recruits. Seems that these recruits will want to see how this new coaching staff actually coach before committing and that would be understandable.

Auburn and Tenn started this recruiting season in similar situations. Tenn has garnered many more commits so far...I wonder if there is a reason or just circumstance.

12:31 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Sensi, that is it exactly. One of the things I noticed last season was that he reacted poorly when he wasn't in on every snap. If Todd came in for a series, when Kodi went back out there he didn't play as well. I wish he could get the attitude that we saw on the 2004 team. Ronnie and Caddy were unselfish which is what made them such a success.

There is another example of this with a couple of players in a game against Florida a few years back. I wish I could recall who, but they basically said they were handling their substitutions like a tag team. When one was tired the other would come in.

Players at any position need to realize that if they execute and play smart football the coaches will find ways to get them in the game.

12:35 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Hoopie, I think this staff is using a different approach. In the past we have attracted top athletes by being selective. For instance, we tell our top runningback prospect that he is the star we want. We even sometimes tell him we won't recruit another runningback or at least not another star.

That is different than the current approach which seems to be to shoot for the stars. Yes, it is risky because you could have all the stars turn you down and not have a backup, but somehow I don't see that happening.

12:39 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Rumor has it that Kodi had a film study problem....not enough.

Seems to me that Kodi was such a better athlete than others in HS that he got away with poor fundamentals. His fundamentals break down the most when under duress or throwing a short pass. His deep passes are normally sound. His short passes more resembled throwing darts in a bar than passing a football.

Steve, my guess is that if we win at least 7 games and put well coached teams on the field, the recruits will come.

If I were a top recruit and interested in an attractive, exciting but unproven staff, I would wait to see what kind of teams they put on the field before committing.

12:49 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Hoopie, you're absolutely right, this recruiting class will be won in the fall and not any time before that.

12:52 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Yea, I still think 7 wins is probably likely. I went back over it again the other day. I do think there is a two game stretch that will determine the success of this season. That will be the back to back road games against Tennessee and Arkansas. If we win both, we should have a decent season.

12:55 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

That is one of the things I look at when guessing wins. The order of games matter and you can usually pick a couple of games that will be the deciding factor. Sure, there are some must wins like Louisiana Tech, MSU, and the like, but there are a few games that will be good indicators of how far along we are.

IMOO, even the best donut can't compare with an average doughnut.

Shipley's Donuts web site shows one in Hoover if you search by zip code, but none in the state if you search by Alabama. It will show it if you search by city/state. Yet searching "Louisiana" shows 5 in that state, all clustered in/near that center of the universe known as Alexandria.

why they can't just have a map showing the locations is beyond me.

Hey all. What a busy weekend for myself and a great one for our recruiting efforts.

Looks like we will probably have the #1 Running Back in the nation along with a great shot to have the #2 running back.

I love all the things this staff is doing on the recruiting front. I can't wait to see what the coaching will be like in the fall.

By the way, the movie "Up" was fantastic. It was by far the best animated movie I have ever seen and I would even deem it more of an adult movie than a kid movie, even though my 3 year old daughter loved it.

Mon- You know I will be there for the True Blood premire.

Mon I was trying to say if he keeps saying stuff like "I guess Saban is SOL" he might require warnings prior to reading his quotes much like Eltoro Freeman.

I would assume the chances of Seastrunk signing with Bama are way down.

Steve, where did you hear something like that?

Eddie, did you see the regular version or the 3-D version of "Up"? I think I would rather see the regular version, but I would like to hear your thoughts on the format that you watched. Thanks.

Eddie, I know you have mentioned they have something planned for June also. It sounds like they likely are going to try to find something to keep us in the headlines until football season. You got to admire that. When I think of previous seasons, this is the time you usually hear next to nothing. Even with the early commits last season, the really wasn't much else.

One of the things I admire about Big Cat Weekend is that they apparently didn't try to make the focus football. They just got the guys down to get together and bond. I am sure everywhere these guys go on visits the coaches are all over them. I get the feeling that wasn't the case here, and the players appreciated it.

Eddie, I assume you think Seastrunk is about a lock and we have a good chance with Lattimore, correct?

depressed- I saw the 3-D version of the movie, but to be all honest with you, this is the first time I saw a 3-D movie and it didn't have all the typical 3-D gags in it. We took our 3 year old daughter to see Monster's vs. Aliens in 3-D and it seemed like they set the whole movie up with gags instead of much of a plot, but "Up" didn't use the cheap tricks in my opinion. Did it enhance the film, absolutely. I think they did a great job of using the 3-D within the story but not stooping to the silly gags. I'm telling you, "Up" is one of the better movies I have seen in awhile, period. I was highly impressed and not expecting much more than a good "kid's" movie. It is a sentimental film, but it tells a wonderful story. I guess after all my rambling, I recommend that you see the 3-D version, but i'm sure nothing will be lost in the story if you saw the non 3-D version.

Thanks eddie. I will look forward to seeing Up. I haven't seen a good animated movie in a long time. I actually prefer the old Disney animations that weren't done by computer.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Steve- They definitely have something planned later on, I think it is July, but it might by June that will be something akin to "Big Cat Weekend".

Yes, Seastruck is the one I like Auburn's chances with best from what I can tell, but nothing is a lock at this point, especially with these highly recruited players, and Lattimore is the other one. I would say that this is as close to a lock as you can have without having a commitment.

The burden is now going to be on the Auburn Offense and Gus being able to show some life this fall to keep the recruits excited.

Steve- I do to about the old animated films. I'm a Disney nut, as most can tell that have been following me sense I have been posting on here. I've got just about every Disney animated film that was released in theaters along with all the Pixar and more recent Disney Computer animated films. I'm actually buying annual passes to Disney World this week for the first time, so i'm kinda of geek in that realm also.

8:56 PM
Blogger AUfan said...

Eddie, that was my main concern, that the 3-D effects would take away from the story itself. I have not seen the "new" type of 3-D, I may give it a try on Up. I am a HUGE Pixar fan, their storytelling ability is second to none.

Eddie, I agree, buy the offense hasn't got to be excellent. I think as long as we show improvement we will get these kid's interest. If it goes great, the coaches can hype the improvement. If it goes not so great, they say it means we really need the help. Unless we somehow did worse than laast year, I don't think our record will be a deciding factor. For our offense to be worse than last year would be something I don't think could happen if we had no OC at all.

I don't think I have ever seen a 3-D movie I liked other than short ones at the zoo that last about 20 minutes. For a full movie to be like that, the new kind of wears off quick.

Eddie- to continue the Disney/Pixar theme, the biggest mob scene I ever witnessed at Disney World was when Lightning McQueen and 'Mater from Cars made their way through MGM. Unbelievable!

Depressed- I feel the same way about Pixar and John Lassiter. I believe he is the closest thing to "Walt Disney" and he now has major influence over Disney Parks and Disney Animation. Go see the 3-D version, you will not be disappointed.

Steve- I agree about the offense. They have to show promise not be the best, which I think they can do.

I am going to enjoy seeing the contrasting running styles of Tate and McCalebb this coming season. It should be interesting to watch. From what I have read, Fannin is suppose to be bigger this season too, so McCalebb's speed will probably really stand out.

Depressed- I love the Mater and McQueen characters. They pretty much have their on spot now in the Studio's in the new Pixar's Place area. Up until "Up", I actually liked "Ratatouille" (sp) the best, but this one just blows them all out of the water.

All of the Pixar movies are excellent, but "Monsters,Inc." has probably been my favorite. The ending when Sulley and Boo say goodbye always makes me want to cry. The Pixar movies have such heart.

Blogger Eddie McCoy said...

Pixar story lines have many layers, especially if you pay attention. Cars seems simple, but it's actually much more. Pixar usually takes two main story lines and weeves them together and in Cars it was McQueen not having anything in life but racing and finding out there is more to life than just being the best and the beaten down town of "Radiator Springs" on Route 66 that was once thriving and now hanging on for dear life, like many towns that are currently on Route 66 that were by-passed once the interstate came in. I could go on and on, but I understand this is an "Auburn" blog :)!!!

Depressed- If you own any Pixar movies in blue-ray, I suggest you watch the Cine-scope version of the film that has the directors talking thru out the film about why they did what they did and history behind the scenes. You would enjoy that, I promise.

I have not yet upgraded to Blu-Ray, but I would like to do so when I can afford it. I would love to hear those commentaries on the films. Sorry to blabber on with the Disney talk, I love the movies and theme parks. I envy your season passes!
