Tony Franklin speaks

Hey everyone. Josh Moon, my uber-talented Advertiser cohort, recently spoke with former Auburn assistant coach Tony Franklin about the circumstances surrounding his October dismissal from the program.

The interview then extended into several areas you'll find interesting.

Before we get into this, and you'll hear plenty about it during the next week, understand that I consider Franklin a credible source of information about what happened last fall. Is he a pariah? His reputation among Auburn fans probably isn't the best, but he's an honest guy who isn't bethrothed to anyone ... aside from his wife.

Franklin's comments are worth reading and considering.

The Advertiser has posted a short preview of the full story, which will run on Saturday morning.
"It was the most unusual place I’ve ever been," Franklin said of the Auburn program. "No one liked anybody else. There was this deep distrust of everybody. The coaches didn’t trust the administration, the administration didn’t trust each other or the coaches. It was very strange and very unnerving. You would walk down the halls and there would be tension you could just feel. No one would speak to you or even look at you. The coaches were all paranoid and didn’t trust anyone in the administration. They all felt like the administration was out to get them and they stressed out over everything that happened."

Football coaches can't win when a bunch of Jerry Jone's wannabes get in the way and interfere. Morale problems-paranoia, etc. ensue.

I fully expect it to happen again in a few years. The true source of the problem has not been removed. Don't get the source of the problems confused with the symptoms created.

One of the things I have long liked about Auburn is not having the win at all cost attitude. Tuberville, Dye, and Jordan all ran very disciplined teams. I hope to see the same from Chizik. I do have a good feeling about him.

I agree, there doesn't seem to have been any slocking of discipline with Chizik.

NoVa..Steve..I agree. I personally know of the positive influence on one of the 2004 1st rounders made by that staff.

"Just Win Baby" won't do that for ya. It is possible to accomplish both goals.....you just can't win it all every year.

CTT was obviously worn down from fighting the rumors, etc and I appreciate how long he perservered. How long will this new staff hang around when they realize what they have gotten into?

It'll be an easy story for ESPN to pick up on and continue. If anyone needs a reminder, I can post the 2006 ESPN article or you can Google "Bobby Lowder".

Yes, NoVA, at any cost. I say sacrifice animals and children, start wars, etc. Whatever it takes. Just win.

We can all work to change the attitude at Auburn by not going all Bama with expectations. That is what got them the turmoil they have experienced since the Bear.

Don't look to blame everything on the head coach. Look at how he addresses problems. Realize that sometimes he will make mistakes. And for heaven sakes, be patient. We will likely have issues in a few years when the 2007 and 2008 recruiting classes are juniors and seniors, but after that, I expect good things.

9:10 PM
Blogger Unknown said...

Oops, should have been 2008 and 2009.

9:11 PM
Blogger Seanzie said...

I'm really not concerned with expectations nor what the head coach does or doesn't do. I'm not into idol worship or religious fanaticism like those Bammeroids. I don't think, however, it's too much to ask to be competitive and win some games. After all, you play to win. Anything else is unacceptable.

WDE JR. welcome aboard. i hate to hear that you are now a -8 stars on rivals.com

i posted early on about the xCTF deal and vanished.
it's nice to be home on THE HABOTN.

i spent a lot of time over on the scout.com board today, and lemme tell ya, both the AU folks and cousin humpers are going apestink bonkers over there.

the cousin humper misinformation campaign is in full swing and they have latched onto the xCTF thing will all two teeth. it's getting pretty entertaining but not al.com stupid. (at least not on the AU forums) the mullets are making up stuff about AU paying players we never got a sniff of and think CTT turned them into the ncaa.

the delay in textbooks sanctions being handed down to the mullets has the AU folks infighting a little, but the level heads that seem to be in the know just say hang in there. the only speeds the ncaa knows is slow, slower and crawl. some of the "insider" stories getting thrown out there about REC practices are absolutely insane if they are true. if only a small fraction are true, get ready for some interesting times on the horizon. xCTF could streak through the state handing out copies of his tell-all book on AU and nobody would notice. if the dam breaks outside the state media, we'll all have plenty to read that does not paint AU in a disparaging light. and $aban will be launching his escape pod to brazil with all the cash he can carry as the house comes down.

i'll leave you all with a question for morning after you read moon's attempt at investigative reporting.

if the death penalty is given to bammer, do we count the years we don't play them as part of the new streak?

gnite.

Good Saturday Morning, Hotties!

Tar Heel, I said I booked the trips. I didn't say I paid for them! LOL You're going be in Baton Rouge? We'll have to get together, if we haven't before that in the Loveliest Village!

I'm in agreement with BinOBA. After reading a lot of the Hotties comments and thinking about it, I have no interest whatsoever in reading the article on CTF.

I'm also in agreement with Hoopie. The PTB and BOT have A LOT to do with the dysfunction. They want to win at all cost. We'll see who's eating their words in a few years if Auburn isn't winning a majority of their games.

Well, it's time to go do some yardwork! Have a great day everyone! :-)

9:06 AM
Blogger Seanzie said...

Hey guys, I read the whole piece on CTF and most of it contains things we and others had speculated on for a while. I think it's unfortunate how the situation in Auburn deteriorated to such a point of no return but the coaching staff nor the administration did themselves any favors.

If Chizik has been chosen and has the full weight of the PTB behind him, the situation can only get better for Auburn as long as they keep within the rules. Obviously the goings on in Tuscaloosa weighed heavily on the previous staff but at the same time as their intensity and work ethic increased, the attitude at Auburn didn't. The staff went for a pie-in-the-sky solution and there was no way it was going to work out.

9:23 AM
Blogger AUBigCat said...

I read the article and since I am assuming that the BOT signed off on the Chiz deal before it was done, they should be happy and all that extra dysfunction should be behind us.

9:32 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I find it hilarious that there are Auburn fans hoping the Saban would leave. We saw the same thing with Tuberville and Bama fans. Each season they tried to convince themselves he was leaving. Strange similar things are.

I also don't understand hoping Alabama gets NCAA sanctions. I am not sure what that is suppose to accomplish.

I am concerned with Auburn and how good Auburn does. I don't consider it directly tied to Alabama.

9:32 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

AUBigCat, the BOT, and specifically Lowder, wanted Tuberville to come to Auburn.

9:33 AM
Blogger tigercowboy said...

I think it was a fair article.

9:43 AM
Blogger tigercowboy said...

Steve you are correct about Lowder hand picking Tubs. I was to told by one of the coaches on the staff that he would be the coach a year before Terry was fired.

That being said he did not move the program as fast or in the direction that the BOT or Lowder thought it he should have and they wanted a change.

After Tubs great comeback he did nothing to mend the fences and held the adminstration hostage until they got the leverage back. He did nothing to calm the distrust or feelings within the department. The shadow of leader cast a very large shadow and unfortunately his was all over his staff.

I am not sure if CGC is "the guy" but you have to feel better about getting the 800lb gorilla out of the corner of the room

9:49 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I thought it was a very good article that describes what I had long suspected. I have worked at a place where we had layoffs regularly, once a quarter. I saw what it did to people. People constantly afraid they are going to lose their jobs behave differently. That is the exact environment I think this staff was in.

Who is to blame? Well, the people who flew to talk with Petrino have to be number one, but it is more than that. It is those that wouldn't put those issues behind them. It sounds like Auburn created it's own self fulfilling prophesy.

9:51 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

The lesson to be learned here is to let the coaches do their jobs. They shouldn't worry if a loss here or there will cost them their jobs.

I am also kind of interested that Rhoades wasn't considered an outsider. He seems to have fit right in.

There is likely blame to go around. The plane trip was stupid, but it is very likely that the coaching staff just wouldn't let the hard feelings go either.

9:54 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

In some ways I think the coaching staff change may end up being the best thing in the long run, but this assumes that the same meddling and distrust doesn't appear. If we lose every game this coming season, except Furman, the coaches should fear for their jobs. They should know they have a few years to get the program headed in the right direction.

9:56 AM
Blogger Jet said...

I don't know of a single multimillion dollar enterprise that doesn't have back-biting, jealousy, power plays and the like. I certainly don't know of one that doesn't have an increase in it when things are going the way we want them.

The difference (from most) with Auburn is that we seem to revel in having our fights in public.

Hoopie is right. We can't win championships every year.

What we can expect is for our head coach to make honest appraisals of our program, plan the work, and work the plan.

10:00 AM
Blogger chip chip said...

allow me to make a prediction predicated on the assumption that gus and the O are very successful over the next 3-4 years:

gus will get an HC offer. the fans will want to fire chiz and promote gus to HC so we don't lose him. the administration will do something totally absurd (like actually try to do it) and the turmoil will be greater than ever.

i hope i'm wrong, but there seems to be a consistent pattern at AU after coaches have been there 4 years or so whether successful or not. the administration does something stupid.

Blogger Aeronaut said...

If you don't have time to read the entire six pages, here's cliff's notes.

Tony Franklin said : nobody was my friend. I only made two friends at Auburn. the world is against me. I think they are religious. They used to pray, that made me constipated.. nobody likes me. I told TT they will fire him when I'm done running the program into ground. waaaaahh nobody talked to me.

bloody miserable failure drama queen SOB. Come out of the closet already.

He wasn't the first coordinator that came into the system. Paul Rhoads didn't have these malfunctions.

-------------
How can he blame AD about job security when tub's agent was running around offering his name everywhere, making the entire Auburn fanbase extremely insecure. In 2008 Tubs had one of the most stable jobs out there, with a new contract and a heavy buyout.

I was tired of watching the entire Athletics Department being hijacked with the agent's shinanigans.

10:33 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

I appreciate the honesty of Franklin and I do think that what he says could be a benefit to Auburn. Hopefully the powers that be will learn from the mistakes that were made.

There is also something else I want to see from Chizik. If we are successful soon, I would like to see a large portion of the raises go to the assistants. I think Chizik has done a good job getting assistants and if we are successful, those assistants deserve a lot of the credit.

10:48 AM
Blogger wartiger said...

So I decided to read the article. I admit that couldn't help myself. Plus I have nothing better to do at the moment but it wasn't that bad. We all know that there administrative problems but what school doesn't have that. Tony was just being honest I suppose but I still think it was an unnecessary interview aimed at making us look bad one way or the other. I just don't see another reason for the article..

11:11 AM
Blogger Unknown said...

AUBigCat, I do think the BOT may have learned a lesson and it is entirely possible that, although the hard feelings between the BOT and the old coaching staff couldn't be healed, that those hard feelings won't develop with the new staff.

The benefit of what Franklin says is that hopefully the administration realizes the environment that they created and don't allow it to happen again.

Great piece about Jeremy Richardson yesterday by Jeff Lee on auburnsports.com. There is also a nice photo of Jeremy with his Granddad who is a lifelong Auburn fan and who is in currently in the hospital.

A quote from Jeff's article:

"Richardson also took a visit to Alabama in the spring. Ultimately, he said, it came down to the Tide and Tigers. According to him, there was one difference.

"At Alabama, it seemed like they were too much about business," said Richardson. "Some of the players that go there now didn't seem like they were happy. It was like they were there just to do a job. They weren't happy.

"At Auburn, it seems like you can go down there, be happy and still work hard, and still be about business."
