Arkansas is up
- He recently hired John L. Smith, former Louisville and Michigan State coach, as Arkansas' special-teams czar.
- Arkansas has entered into a 10-year deal to play Texas A&M in the new Cowboys stadium.
- On being closer to have the right personnel: "I think we're really getting there. We have two quarterbacks now who have been in the system. We've really progressed."
- Arkansas' four best DLs and LBs played major roles last season. "There is no doubt we'll be better. We'll be much more aggressive."
- On Tim Tebow: "You want to find a guy who is a great leader, a great competitor and a great winner. Tim is all of that. There is no question in my mind that he'll be very successful in the NFL."
- Petrino is surprised by how few quarterbacks these days understand how to command an offense from under center. He believes the proliferation of spread offenses in high-school ball is to blame.
- On being more comfortable: "We've done a nice job in the offseason, as a coaching staff, of getting to know our players. I have a staff that has a lot of nice components. It's a two-way go -- the coaches and the players are much more comfortable with what what we're doing."
- On how Arkansas got Ryan Mallett from Michigan: "I had just got there. Tim Horton, a member of our staff and of the former staff, received a phone call. Mallett was interested in transferring. He's from Texarkana. He has a lot of relatives in the state. He said the first phone call was to us. We got a good understand of what we wanted to do offensively."
- On his team's weak second-half defensive performances last season: "I have blacked those games out."
- On the importance of experience at quarterback: "It's critical ... just to experience the speed. You have to train yourself to keep your eyes down field as things are flashing around you. Without good quarterback play, it's tough to win a championship."
- Did you vote Tim Tebow as first-team SEC quarterback? "I'm not crazy. I probably did."
- "We'll be better. We'll be a better football team. We need to get into the fourth quarter with a chance to win."
- Mallett, the quarterback, has lost 25 pounds since arriving last year.
- On Michael Vick's situation: "I hope he gets the second chance that he needs and does a good job." (Petrino coached Vick with the Atlanta Falcons in 2007.)
- Petrino said Arkansas doesn't use a spread offense. It is a "play-action" offense.
THAT'S A WRAP. Next up: Vanderbilt at 2:15ish.

Petrino handled that first question well, methinks.
That's an interesting deal with TAMU.
Wonder if Arky plans to defect back to the Big 12 (they were in the SWC, right?)?
They'd fit well in the North maybe in place of Paul Rhodes' ISU squad.
Sensi must've taken his little blue pill.
Remember, kids, if you have four consecutive posts to seek immediate medical attention.
Wow, John L. Smith and Bobby Petrino on the same sideline. Louisville fans have to love this.
John L. Smith is worst than Petrino, he told his team at halftime of their bowl game he was leaving Louisville to take the Michigan State job.
Interesting item on Advertiser web site ... UAT media guide does not include Brandon Fanney, nor signee Anthony Orr.
That Les Miles pass that beat us with a second left was a bonehead call, whether it worked or not.
why all the blame on spread offenses?
I guess if you just "black" things out they just go away........
Is the Lincoln High HC Keith Howard related to AU commit D.J. Howard?
What about Mo or Curly Howard?
Juwan Howard?
i've blacked out most performances by our team last year as well. craziness.
i agree. UofL fans must not know what to do with themselves. ha. well, that is if they even care.
Fab 5 baby!
why can't i get 'streaming video' from the SEC website? i thought we were the #1 sports conference in america???!!! come on!
yup, i did it Jet. i'm off to get medicated!
To Jet:
I hear our fair state will go bankrupt in 2011. Any truth to that?
What can be done to avert such disaster?
Scottie....LMAO
At the risk of racial profiling.....DJ is kin to Juwan and Keith is kin to Mo and Curly. Methinks DJ got the better end of that deal.
I know it's petty, but I still have a problem with the way Petrino left the Falcons, so I wish nothing but losses for the Razorbacks.
Oh a wise guy eh Hoopie?!?
Workin on that fourth post Jet was talkin about
Sensi - one way to avoid such a disaster would be to eliminate "18 segment land surveys" such as our friend Jet will be conducting in another state next month.
I'm just sayin...
Sensi:
Only three strategies possible: cut spending, increase taxes or spend the oil and gas trust funds.
The state constitution, thankfully, prohibits deficit spending.
It's not that the state will be bankrupt, it's just we will not have access to some of the federal money and other money that we have access to now. We will have to make the choice to reduce services or increase revenue through one of the two methods above.
I am glad Petrino is at Arkansas. He is an easy coach for me to dislike. I actually am a Nutt lover, so it made it tough for me.
That reminds me. I have a poll for all of you. Which SEC coach most resembles Jack Nicklson in The Shining?
Jet needs to scroll up and read my post.
John L. Smith is on special teams? So I guess we can count on Arkansas special teams to undergo massive breakdowns towards the end of games.
Norm,
The environmental study will not be paid for by the taxpayers, so I guess since you are for stifling the marketplace, you must be some sort of commie, pinko, socialist.
Did Steve just say he was a Nutt lover?
TommyD ...
I think he did.
TommyD ...
I wonder if Tubs knows about Steve and Nutt.
Jet, who pays for environmental studies?
oh snap!
ok, much better now. i just went to the most ghetto Kenjo Market you've ever seen, but my 99 cent Peach Nehi is worth every cent. aahhhh.... still can't get my 'streaming' audio, though.
tommy..it was my pathetic attempt at snark. I should just leave that to Harrison.
And yes, the economy is screwed and we are likely all doomed to experience another great depression, but can we limit our conversation to what is really important, namely, football!!
Lord I apologize, for talkin 'bout Steve the Nutt lover, and feedin the starvin pygmies amen
I think I read the same thing.
So nobody knows if DJ Howard is related to his HS HC. You guys just crushed all my conspiracy theories.
Steve.. nutt lover?
Hoop I should have placed "in a Curly Howard voice" next to my comment
Steve,
The guy with the cash.
Nutt is the most entertaining coach in the SEC and also the SEC coach most likely to replace Jack Nicklson in a re-make of The Shining.
If any particular state will "acquiesce" to the "new" federal demands..there is plenty of $$$. The Federal gubmint has around a Trillion dollars they just borrowed from China to throw around.
Hmmm, I am sort of the guy with the cash. I just inherited a boat load and try to live off a 3rd of my income, so, yea, I do alright.
The way things are going, Chinese will become a require subject in all high schools.
Steve Spurrier always has and always will be the most entertaining coach in the SEC.
Nutt is just a guy who will be an average of 8-4 at any school because he is good enough to scare you, but arrogant enough to blow games he shouldn't.
Kinda reminds me of someone else.
For some reason ALL the Nutt jokes are hitting my brain today.
I fell dirty even reading the name Bobby Petrino. I have absolutely no respect for that guy. I'm going to take a shower now to get the filth off.
LT
Nutt is also my choice as the coach most likely to pull a Woody Hayes.
I'm with Loganville re: Petrino.
Howard is not related to his coach and his coach is white.
Spurrier the most likely to "Odd Job" his visor at an opponent.
I find the way John L. Smith left Louisville even worse than Petrino, but I can see why Petrino would hire him. They fit well together.
Gentry Estes MMBSAL - his name and his voice.
Just sayin
Howard's coach is actually Chris Farley. He went into the witness protection program and became a high school coach in Alabama.
As for Petrino, dead man walking.
I have no problem with the way Smith left. He could have waited until after the bowl, but he didn't pull a Terry Bowdem of Coach Fran.
If Arthur blank had manipulated me and blindsided me with ultimatums like he did with Petrino....I would have dumped the Falcons in the same fashion. The Atlanta fans melted down screaming and cursing Petrino/family after that Monday nite game...and then were mad when he left....yeah....right.
Back when Blank was at Depot, I did a lot of bidness with them. Lying and manipulation to gain advantage was a management tool for them.
Jet - I'm no pinkie commie socialist. If the survey and other activities are all Jet funded, then I apologize for assuming otherwise based on your initial post on the topic.
Mon, i had to google that but it was worth it. ha.
How do y'all feel about the way Tubbs left Ole Miss?
With the exception of Arkansas, name me one job that Petrino interviewed for that wasn't better than the one he currently had.
Hoopie, I agree with you on his ATL departure.
You can fault him for sitting down across the table from Housel, Walker, etc., but he thought he was among friends. Otherwise, it would have been his agent meeting with someone in a hotel near the ATL airport.
I scoff at all the high-mindedness in regards to Petrino. He's a mercenary. Like 95 percent of the rest of them.
Preach it, Sister Moniker!
At least Tub met with his team in person and told them he was going.
Steve,
So telling your team at halftime of a game they are currently playing that you are leaving is a noble way of leaving?
I've decided I'm not going to comment on the Petrino in ATL situation. Istarted going on and on, decided it's not worth the trouble. I'll just say I disagree with some of you on how he handles his bidness.
RK, I wouldn't call it noble, but it is better than I have seen from other coaches.
haha...Mon is using acronyms that are "indelicate, but deliciously descriptive."
I think Petrino is a good coach. His lack of general lack of loyalty bothers me, but not in the Atl case. I also think that if he has great success at Ark...he will move again.
I also don't think that $aban or Meyer are going anywhere soon....those boys got it too good.
I read PF's article from yesterday...I guess being the Dean of SEC football is a loser title.
