Our Tar Heel Tiger's Auburn Minute is brought to you by the number:

16

... and by WarEagleRK, who penned our fine report.

Mobile native Dameyune Craig played at Auburn from 1994-1997, getting his first significant time as a sophomore in 1995 as a backup for Patrick Nix. Terry Bowden used Craig in many short-yardage situations and almost exclusively as the goal-line quarterback to take advantage of his speed and to prepare him to be the starter the next year.

Craig was a two-year starter, leading us to a disappointing 8-4 record in 1996 and a win in the Weedeater bowl in Shreveport.

However in 1997, Craig was the man, even receiving some early-season Heisman talk until a loss to Florida and a still-unexplained 20-0 defeat at home to Mississippi State helped derail those dreams.

In 1997, he set an Auburn record with 3,277 yards passing and led the team to the SEC title game (vs. Tennessee) and a 10-3 record. Craig was responsible for 79% of Auburn's offense that year as the team averaged less than 75 yards rushing per game. If Auburn didn't have Craig under center, they would have struggled to get to six wins and a bowl game. Nonetheless, they finished one point short of an SEC championship.

Craig went on to a brief career in the NFL with the Washington Redskins and Carolina Panthers. He still holds the professional football record for most passing yards in a game, when he threw for 611 yards playing with the Scottish Claymores in the NFL European league.

So everyone tip your HABOTN hat to a true warrior of the gridiron and a man sometimes carried Auburn on his back for two years to 18 wins.

HONORABLE MENTION:

* Greg Taylor: A diminutive WR from the early 90s.

* Daniel Cobb: Holds the Auburn record for most TDs passing in one game (5) in 2001 against Louisiana Tech.

* Rob Bironas: Current NFL All-Pro kicker who spent one season at Auburn (then moved on to Ga. Southern) in 1998 before being beaten out by the inconsistent Damon Duval and his 1999 blonde hair. He was an All-SEC selection during his one year on the Plains.

It is going to be interesting to see how ChizRoof will handle the shortage at linebacker. I suspect we will see some creative defense.

That is correct, Harrison. A team of Chili's best chefs made the first philly cheesesteak sandwich in San Antonio in 1987. The rest is history.

Steve..I think that Jet/JGT were discussing using nickel variations. Sounds about right. Boom Muschamp hid our DB deficiencies very well in 2007 doing that. As mentioned earlier...it ain't like we got a bunch of big Dbs for use to fill in either.

If only Boom had taught them to look back for the football.

In honor of DC#16 day, here's a funny story on Craig. My brother knows him much better having worked with the football team while DC was the QB, but Craig was at Auburn while I was (2000-2004) there for a little while to finish up some school work I believe. Through a confluence of events, one of my roommates actually got an intramural team together that consisted of Craig, James Bostic, and Adlai Trone. AND THEY LOST!!Apparently, the team chemistry wasn't there. Supposedly, DC did not play QB the whole time and when he did, he seemed to want to run the ball more than pass it. I guess he wanted all the all-purpose yards.

Eddie... Thanks to you also for the nomination. I promise I am not running for anything and if elected will not serve. Seriously, I do appreciate your comment, it makes me feel as I am contributing something to the blog other than my lifetime love for one of the best things to ever come into my life, AUBURN UNIVERSITY or A.P.I That's what it was when I first started to school there.

1:11 PM
Blogger Tar Heel Tiger said...

only 3 people on the team? no wonder they lost. Of course, if they had had the team chemistry of Mike Womack, Barry "Bearman" Poole, and myself, they could have won, as the 3 of us did 99-42 vs a team of 8 in the first annual British Woods Labor Day Bowl in 1966. (complete uniforms required).

1:11 PM
Blogger michael said...

Eddie's brother - I remember hearing about that team! Never saw them play, though. I have a completely hazy recollection of hearing DC quit before the season was over, but that may be false.

Steve- You can take back your Itunes review, that one hurt. Apparently I don't contribute anything meaningful to the show :(!!!!

Just kidding about it being Steve's comment, but somebody doesn't like me. I guess I'll take my ball and go hide.

The most fun road trip I ever made was to T'loser back in the day when freshmen were ineligible to play varsity and schools had freshman teams. The year I think was 1968 as I recall. Sullivan and Beasley were on the team. We pretty well handed the Tide freshmen their a$$e$. I can't remember the score, but it had been a long time since the AU frosh had beaten the Tide frosh in T'loser. The Bama fans could not believe their eyes when they saw Sully and Beasley even though they had the vaunted Johnny Musso on their tem.

Yeah, what may have hurt intramural team is the fact that they had Auburn football managers to compliment the All-SEC calibre talent of Craig, Trone, and Bostic.

Michael, I'm pretty sure that team only played one or two games before everyone went their separate ways, plus it wasn't as dramatic as I'm making it out to be.

I did play with Trone once during bowl practice for the 2001 Citrus Bowl, and I was quarterback and he was on my team. Well, I threw this fade route to him once and he came back to the huddle saying to put more air under it and I just had to laugh.

As it turns out, when I play football, I'm use to throwing to guys who run a 5.3 forty instead of a guy who runs about 4.4 or 4.5 in the forty. As Tyrik Rollison said earlier this camp, you're just not use to playing with that kind of speed.

Monica, as long as you on this blog will put up with me I will offer some more war stories as we go along waiting on another season to begin. Right now, it is nap time here at the home. We have had a busy morning of bingo and board games. They will wake us up around 3:00 for our afternoon meds.

found the score...
Sullivan and Beasley led a remarkable rally from 27-0 deficit to win 36-27 in the 1968 freshman game.

you can read the whole story in "Saturday's to Remember" if you happen to have a copy on your bookshelf. It was published circa 1973.

WERK, I was at that '93 Vandy game. We had to have a goal line stand to win it. What I remember about the game besides that was that there was a super-slippery step on one side of our section. Almost every person who went up those steps hit it and completely lost it on the way up or down at some point. It was hilarious to watch, especially if they were carrying a bunch of drinks or something.

2:03 PM
Blogger Scott Chocolate said...

Actually, I was at the '01 Vandy game, too. I had forgotten that that one was so tight. Seems like we were up on them and then let them get back in it. I don't really remember, but that would be par for the course with Tubs. I do remember that my brother went to the game with me and we had a pretty good time, but I think we chickened out on sneaking in a flask because it was two weeks after 9/11.

I worked up in the press box as the telecommunications guy for the coaches' headsets during the 2001 Vandy game and the coaches' headsets upstairs went out during the first half and then the they announced it over the loudspeaker so that the Vandy coaches would stop using their headsets as well and I just thought, "Great, now the entire stadium knows I failed at my job." Well, I didn't really, it was out of my control and it was just time for those old headsets to stop working.

Mazzone was on the field calling plays, so our offense was fine, but Lovett was up top and so it was down to Joe Whitt to call defensive plays for a little while and when asked for a playcall, all he could reply with was, "Uh...uh...base defense." Good times.
